Enumerations of Permutations Simultaneously Avoiding a Vincular and a Covincular Pattern of Length 3
Vincular and covincular patterns are generalizations of classical patterns allowing restrictions on the indices and values of the occurrences in a permutation. In this paper we study the integer sequences arising as the enumerations of permutations simultaneously avoiding a vincular and a covincular pattern, both of length 3, with at most one restriction. We see familiar sequences, such as the Catalan and Motzkin numbers, but also some previously unknown sequences which have close links to other combinatorial objects such as lattice paths and integer partitions. Where possible we include a generating function for the enumeration. One of the cases considered settles a conjecture by Pudwell (2010) on the Wilf-equivalence of barred patterns. We also give an alternative proof of the classic result that permutations avoiding 123 are counted by the Catalan numbers.

The paper is devoted to the study of graph sequence G_n = (V_n, E_n) where V_n is the set of all vectors v in R^n with coordinates from {-1, 0, 1} such that |v| = sqrt(3), and E_n consists of all pairs of vertices with the scalar product 1. We find exactly the independence number of G_n. As a corollary we get some new lower bounds of chi(\R^n) and chi(\Q^n) for small values of n.

Allouche and Shallit introduced the notion of a regular power series as a generalization of automatic sequences. Becker showed that all regular power series satisfy Mahler equations and conjectured equivalent conditions for the converse to be true. We prove a stronger form of Becker's conjecture for a subclass of Mahler power series.

Binary sequences with minimal autocorrelations have applications in communication engineering, mathematics and computer science. In statistical physics they appear as groundstates of the Bernasconi model. Finding these sequences is a notoriously hard problem, that so far can be solved only by exhaustive search. We review recent algorithms and present a new algorithm that finds optimal sequences of length $N$ in time $Θ(N\,1.73^N)$. We computed all optimal sequences for $N\leq 66$ and all optimal skewsymmetric sequences for $N\leq 119$.

Consider the full modular group $\sf{PSL}_{2}(\mathbb{Z})$ with presentation $\langle U,S|U^3,S^2\rangle$. Motivated by our investigations on quasi-modular forms and the Minkowski question mark function (so that this paper might be considered as a necessary appendix), we are lead to the following natural question. Some words in the alphabet $\{U,S\}$ are equal to the unity; for example, $USU^3SU^2$ is such a word of length $8$, and $USU^3SUSU^3S^3U$ is such a word of length $15$. Given $n\in\mathbb{N}_{0}$. Find the number of words of length $n$ which are equal to the unity. This is the new entry A265434 into the Online Encyclopedia of Integer Sequences. We investigate the generating function of this sequence and prove that it is an algebraic function over $\mathbb{Q}(x)$ of degree $3$. As an aside, we formulate the problem of describing all algebraic functions with a Fermat property.
The Class of Random Graphs Arising from Exchangeable Random Measures
We introduce a class of random graphs that we argue meets many of the desiderata one would demand of a model to serve as the foundation for a statistical analysis of real-world networks. The class of random graphs is defined by a probabilistic symmetry: invariance of the distribution of each graph to an arbitrary relabelings of its vertices. In particular, following Caron and Fox, we interpret a symmetric simple point process on $\mathbb{R}_+^2$ as the edge set of a random graph, and formalize the probabilistic symmetry as joint exchangeability of the point process. We give a representation theorem for the class of random graphs satisfying this symmetry via a straightforward specialization of Kallenberg's representation theorem for jointly exchangeable random measures on $\mathbb{R}_+^2$. The distribution of every such random graph is characterized by three (potentially random) components: a nonnegative real $I \in \mathbb{R}_+$, an integrable function $S: \mathbb{R}_+ \to \mathbb{R}_+$, and a symmetric measurable function $W: \mathbb{R}_+^2 \to [0,1]$ that satisfies several weak integrability conditions. We call the triple $(I,S,W)$ a graphex, in analogy to graphons, which characterize the (dense) exchangeable graphs on $\mathbb{N}$. Indeed, the model we introduce here contains the exchangeable graphs as a special case, as well as the "sparse exchangeable" model of Caron and Fox. We study the structure of these random graphs, and show that they can give rise to interesting structure, including sparse graph sequences. We give explicit equations for expectations of certain graph statistics, as well as the limiting degree distribution. We also show that certain families of graphexes give rise to random graphs that, asymptotically, contain an arbitrarily large fraction of the vertices in a single connected component.
On star-forest ascending subgraph decomposition
The Ascending Subgraph Decomposition (ASD) Conjecture asserts that every graph $G$ with ${n+1\choose 2}$ edges admits an edge decomposition $G=H_1\oplus\cdots \oplus H_n$ such that $H_i$ has $i$ edges and it is isomorphic to a subgraph of $H_{i+1}$, $i=1,\ldots ,n-1$. We show that every bipartite graph $G$ with ${n+1\choose 2}$ edges such that the degree sequence $d_1,\ldots ,d_k$ of one of the stable sets satisfies $ d_{k-i}\ge n-i\; \text{for each}\; 0\le i\le k-1,$, admits an ascending subgraph decomposition with star forests. We also give a necessary condition on the degree sequence which is not far from the above sufficient one.

A generalization of Tutte polynomial involved in the evaluation of the moments of the integrated geometric Brownian in the Ito formalism is discussed. The new combinatorial invariant depends on the order in which the sequence of contraction-deletions have been performed on the graph. Thus, this work provides a motivation for studying an order-dependent Tutte polynomial in the context of stochastic differential equations. We show that in the limit of the control parameters encoding the ordering going to zero, the multivariate Tutte-Fortuin-Kasteleyn polynomial is recovered.

Let $\mathcal{L}(T,λ)=\sum_{k=0}^n(-1)^{k}c_{k}(T)λ^{n-k}$ be the characteristic polynomial of its Laplacian matrix of a tree $T$. This paper studied some properties of the generating function of the coefficients sequence $(c_0, \cdots, c_n)$ which are related with the matching polynomials of division tree of $T$. These results, in turn, are used to characterize all extremal trees having the minimum Laplacian coefficient generation function and the minimum incidence energy of trees with described maximum degree, respectively.
On connected simple graphs and their degree sequences
This note describes necessary and sufficient conditions for a sequence of positive integers to be the degree sequence of a connected simple graph. Conditions are also given under which a sequence is necessarily connected i.e. the sequence can only be realised as a connected graph. A matrix is introduced whose non-empty entries partition the set of connected graphs. The note concludes with a result relating the number of edges in a simple graph to the connectedness of the graph.

Recently, Z. W. Sun put forward a series of conjectures on monotonicity of combinatorial sequences in the form of $\{z_n/z_{n-1}\}_{n=N}^\infty$ and $\{\sqrt[n+1]{z_{n+1}}/\sqrt[n]{z_n}\}_{n=N}^\infty$ for some positive integer $N$, where $\{z_n\}_{n=0}^\infty$ is a sequence of positive integers. Luca and Stănică, Hou et al., Chen et al., Sun and Yang proved some of them. In this paper, we give an affirmative answer to monotonicity of another new kind of number conjectured by Z. W. Sun via interlacing method for log-convexity and log-concavity of a sequence, and we also use the criterion for log-concavity of a sequence in the form of $\{\sqrt[n]{z_n}\}_{n=1}^\infty$ due to Xia.
Some Ratio Monotonic Properties of a New Kind of Numbers introduced by Z.-W. Sun
Recently, Z. W. Sun introduced a new kind of numbers $S_n$ and also posed a conjecture on ratio monotonicity of combinatorial sequences related to $S_n$. In this paper, by investigating some arithmetic properties of $S_n$, we give an affirmative answer to his conjecture. Our methods are based on a newly established criterion and interlacing method for log-convexity, and also the criterion for ratio log-concavity of a sequence due to Chen, Guo and Wang.
Supercongruences involving dual sequences

In this paper we study some sophisticated supercongruences involving dual sequences. For $n=0,1,2,\ldots$ define $$d_n(x)=\sum_{k=0}^n\binom nk\binom xk2^k$$ and $$s_n(x)=\sum_{k=0}^n\binom nk\binom xk\binom{x+k}k=\sum_{k=0}^n\binom nk(-1)^k\binom xk\binom{-1-x}k.$$ For any odd prime $p$ and $p$-adic integer $x$, we determine $\sum_{k=0}^{p-1}(\pm1)^kd_k(x)^2$ and $\sum_{k=0}^{p-1}(2k+1)d_k(x)^2$ modulo $p^2$; for example, we establish the new $p$-adic congruence $$\sum_{k=0}^{p-1}(-1)^kd_k(x)^2\equiv(-1)^{\langle x\rangle_p}\pmod{p^2},$$ where $\langle x\rangle_p$ denotes the least nonnegative integer $r$ with $x\equiv r\pmod p$. For any prime $p>3$ and $p$-adic integer $x$, we determine $\sum_{k=0}^{p-1}s_k(x)^2$ modulo $p^2$ (or $p^3$ if $x\in\{0,\ldots,p-1\}$), and show that $$\sum_{k=0}^{p-1}(2k+1)s_k(x)^2\equiv0\pmod{p^2}.$$ We also pose several related conjectures.
Spiral Structures in the Rotor-Router Walk

We study the rotor-router walk on the infinite square lattice with the outgoing edges at each lattice site ordered clockwise. In the previous paper [J.Phys.A: Math. Theor. 48, 285203 (2015)], we have considered the loops created by rotors and labeled sites where the loops become closed. The sequence of labels in the rotor-router walk was conjectured to form a spiral structure obeying asymptotically an Archimedean property. In the present paper, we select a subset of labels called "nodes" and consider spirals formed by nodes. The new spirals are directly related to tree-like structures which represent the evolution of the cluster of vertices visited by the walk. We show that the average number of visits to the origin $\left<n_0(t)\right>$ by the moment $t\gg 1$ is $\left<n_0(t)\right> = 4 \left<n(t)\right> + O(1)$ where $\left<n(t)\right>$ is the average number of rotations of the spiral.
Beyond Aztec Castles: Toric Cascades in the $dP_3$ Quiver

Given one of an infinite class of supersymmetric quiver gauge theories, string theorists can associate a corresponding toric variety (which is a Calabi-Yau 3-fold) as well as an associated combinatorial model known as a brane tiling. In combinatorial language, a brane tiling is a bipartite graph on a torus and its perfect matchings are of interest to both combinatorialists and physicists alike. A cluster algebra may also be associated to such quivers and in this paper we study the generators of this algebra, known as cluster variables, for the quiver associated to the cone over the del Pezzo surface $dP_3$. In particular, mutation sequences involving mutations exclusively at vertices with two in-coming arrows and two out-going arrows are referred to as toric cascades in the string theory literature. Such toric cascades give rise to interesting discrete integrable systems on the level of cluster variable dynamics. We provide an explicit algebraic formula for all cluster variables which are reachable by toric cascades as well as a combinatorial interpretation involving perfect matchings of subgraphs of the $dP_3$ brane tiling for these formulas in most cases.
On connected degree sequences

In this short note we observe that recent results of Abert and Hubai and of Csikvari and Frenkel about Benjamini--Schramm continuity of the holomorphic moments of the roots of the chromatic polynomial extend to the theory of dense graph sequences. We offer a number of problems and conjectures motivated by this observation.
Longest increasing subsequences and log concavity
Let $π$ be a permutation of $[n]=\{1,\dots,n\}$ and denote by $\ell(π)$ the length of a longest increasing subsequence of $π$. Let $\ell_{n,k}$ be the number of permutations $π$ of $[n]$ with $\ell(π)=k$. Chen conjectured that the sequence $\ell_{n,1},\ell_{n,2},\dots,\ell_{n,n}$ is log concave for every fixed positive integer $n$. We conjecture that the same is true if one is restricted to considering involutions and we show that these two conjectures are closely related. We also prove various analogues of these conjectures concerning permutations whose output tableaux under the Robinson-Schensted algorithm have certain shapes. In addition, we present a proof of Deift that part of the limiting distribution is log concave. Various other conjectures are discussed.
On the length of fully commutative elements

In a Coxeter group $W$, an element is fully commutative if any two of its reduced expressions can be linked by a series of commutation of adjacent letters. These elements have particularly nice combinatorial properties, and also index a basis of the generalized Temperley--Lieb algebra attached to $W$.
We give two results about the sequence counting these elements with respect to their Coxeter length. First we prove that it always satisfies a linear recurrence with constant coefficients, by showing that reduced expressions of fully commutative elements form a regular language. Then we classify those groups $W$ for which the sequence is ultimately periodic, extending a result of Stembridge. These results are applied to the growth of generalized Temperley--Lieb algebras.
