A New Lower Bound for the Distinct Distance Constant
Published in Journal of Integer Sequences, volume 18 (2015), issue 4, article 8 • Search Publication
The reciprocal sum of Zhang sequence is not equal to the Distinct Distance Constant. This note introduces a $B_2$-sequence with larger reciprocal sum, and provides a more precise estimation of the reciprocal sums of Mian-Chowla sequence and Zhang sequence.

A relation for a class of Racah polynomials
In this paper we derive a relation for a class of Racah polynomials that appear in a conjecture of Kresch and Tamvakis. The relation follows from an inversion formula for a transformation of a discrete sequence of complex numbers $\{ x_n \}_{n=0}^{\infty}$. As a result of our inversion formula, we also obtain other combinatorial identities.

The switch Markov chain for sampling irregular graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
The problem of efficiently sampling from a set of(undirected) graphs with a given degree sequence has many applications. One approach to this problem uses a simple Markov chain, which we call the switch chain, to perform the sampling. The switch chain is known to be rapidly mixing for regular degree sequences. We prove that the switch chain is rapidly mixing for any degree sequence with minimum degree at least 1 and with maximum degree $d_{\max}$ which satisfies $3\leq d_{\max}\leq \frac{1}{4}\, \sqrt{M}$, where $M$ is the sum of the degrees. The mixing time bound obtained is only an order of $n$ larger than that established in the regular case, where $n$ is the number of vertices.

On Erdős-Ko-Rado for random hypergraphs I
Published • View PublicationBIB
A family of sets is intersecting if no two of its members are disjoint, and has the Erdős-Ko-Rado property (or is EKR) if each of its largest intersecting subfamilies has nonempty intersection. Denote by $\mathcal{H}_k(n,p)$ the random family in which each $k$-subset of $\{1\dots n\}$ is present with probability $p$, independent of other choices. A question first studied by Balogh, Bohman and Mubayi asks: \[ \mbox{for what $p=p(n,k)$ is $\mathcal{H}_k(n,p)$ likely to be EKR?} \] Here, for fixed $c<1/4$, and $k< \sqrt{cn\log n}$ we give a precise answer to this question, characterizing those sequences $p=p(n,k)$ for which $$ \Pr(\mathcal{H}_k(n,p) \textrm{ is EKR}) \rightarrow 1 \textrm{ as } n\rightarrow \infty. $$

Maximal-clique partitions and the Roller Coaster Conjecture
Published • View PublicationBIB
A graph $G$ is {\em well-covered} if every maximal independent set has the same cardinality $q$. Let $i_k(G)$ denote the number of independent sets of cardinality $k$ in $G$. Brown, Dilcher, and Nowakowski conjectured that the independence sequence $(i_0(G), i_1(G), \ldots, i_q(G))$ was unimodal for any well-ordered graph $G$ with independence number $q$. Michael and Traves disproved this conjecture. Instead they posited the so-called ``Roller Coaster" Conjecture: that the terms \[ i_{\left\lceil\frac{q}2\right\rceil}(G), i_{\left\lceil\frac{q}2\right\rceil+1}(G), \ldots, i_q(G) \] could be in any specified order for some well-covered graph $G$ with independence number $q$. Michael and Traves proved the conjecture for $q<8$ and Matchett extended this to $q<12$. In this paper, we prove the Roller Coaster Conjecture using a construction of graphs with a property related to that of having a maximal-clique partition. In particular, we show, for all pairs of integers $1\le k<q$ and positive integers $m$, that there is a well-covered graph $G$ with independence number $q$ for which every independent set of size $k+1$ is contained in a unique maximal independent set, but each independent set of size $k$ is contained in at least $m$ distinct independent sets.

Maximal Green Sequences for Cluster Algebras Associated to the n-Torus
Published • View PublicationBIB
Given a marked surface (S,M) we can add arcs to the surface to create a triangulation, T, of that surface. For each triangulation, T, we can associate a cluster algebra. In this paper we will consider the torus of genus n with two interior marked points (called punctures). We will construct a specific triangulation of this surface which yeilds a specific quiver. Then in the sense of work by Keller we will produce a maximal green sequence for this quiver.

A Combinatorial Model for Exceptional Sequences in Type A
Published • View PublicationBIB
Exceptional sequences are certain ordered sequences of quiver representations. We use noncrossing edge-labeled trees in a disk with boundary vertices (expanding on T. Araya's work) to classify exceptional sequences of representations of Q, the linearly-ordered quiver with n vertices. We also show how to use variations of this model to classify c-matrices of Q, to interpret exceptional sequences as linear extensions, and to give a simple bijection between exceptional sequences and certain chains in the lattice of noncrossing partitions. In the case of c-matrices, we also give an interpretation of c-matrix mutation in terms of our noncrossing trees with directed edges.

On degree sequences forcing the square of a Hamilton cycle
Published • View PublicationBIB
A famous conjecture of Pósa from 1962 asserts that every graph on $n$ vertices and with minimum degree at least $2n/3$ contains the square of a Hamilton cycle. The conjecture was proven for large graphs in 1996 by Komlós, Sárközy and Szemerédi. In this paper we prove a degree sequence version of Pósa's conjecture: Given any $η>0$, every graph $G$ of sufficiently large order $n$ contains the square of a Hamilton cycle if its degree sequence $d_1\leq \dots \leq d_n$ satisfies $d_i \geq (1/3+η)n+i$ for all $i \leq n/3$. The degree sequence condition here is asymptotically best possible. Our approach uses a hybrid of the Regularity-Blow-up method and the Connecting-Absorbing method.

Enumeration of m-Endomorphisms
Published in Involve 9 (2016) 423-435 • View PublicationBIB
An m-endomorphism of a free semigroup is an endomorphism that sends every generator to a word of length at most m. Two m-endomorphisms are combinatorially equivalent if they are conjugate under an automorphism of the semigroup. In this paper, we specialize an argument of N. G. de Bruijn to produce a formula for the number of combinatorial equivalence classes of m-endomorphisms on a rank-n semigroup. From this formula, we derive several little-known integer sequences.

The Generating Functions Enumerating 12..d-Avoiding Words with r occurrences of each of 1,2, ... , n are D-finite for all d and all r
In this article, dedicated with admiration and gratitude to guru Neil Sloane on his 75-th birthday, we observe that the generating functions for multi-set permutations that do not contain an increasing subsequence of length d, and where every letter appears the same number of times, say r, are always D-finite, (for every d and every r), and we actually crank out the first few terms of quite a few of them, many of whom are not yet in the OEIS. We also state a conjectured asymptotic formula for these sequences, that reduces to Amitai Regev's famous formula when r=1, and pledge a 100 dollar donation to the OEIS in honor of the first one to prove our conjecture. We pledge another 100 dollars for extending Ira Gessel's spectacular Bessel determinant, from the r=1 case to general r.

Polynomialité des coefficients de structure des algèbres de doubles-classes
In this thesis we studied the structure coefficients and especially their dependence on $n$ in the case of a sequence of double-class algebras. The first chapter is dedicated to the study of the structure coefficients in the general cases of centers of group algebras and double-class algebras. We recall in it the representation theory of finite groups and its link with structure coefficients. We show also that the study of the structure coefficients of double-class algebras is related to the theory of Gelfand pairs and zonal spherical functions by giving, in the case of Gelfand pairs, a theorem similar to that of Frobenius which writes the structure coefficients of the double-class algebra associated to a Gelfand pair in terms of zonal spherical functions. In the second chapter, we recall the Farahat and Higman's theorem about the polynomiality of the structure coefficients of the center of the symmetric group algebra as well as the Ivanov and Kerov's approach to prove this theorem. We give a combinatorial proof to the polynomiality property of the structure coefficients of the Hecke algebra of the pair $(S_{2n},B_n)$ in the third chapter. Our proof uses a universal algebra which projects on the Hecke algebra of $(S_{2n}, B_n)$ for each $n.$ We show that this universal algebra is isomorphic to the algebra of $2$-shifted symmetric functions. In the fourth and last chapter we build a general framework which gives us the form of the structure coefficients in the case of a sequence of double-class algebras. This framework implies the polynomiality property of the structure coefficients of both the center of the symmetric group algebra and the Hecke algebra of $(S_{2n},B_n).$ In addition, we give a polynomiality property for the structure coefficients of both the center of the hyperoctahedral group algebra and the double-class algebra of $diag(S_{n-1})$ in $S_n\times S_{n-1}^{opp}.$

New Geometric Representations and Domination Problems on Tolerance and Multitolerance Graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Tolerance graphs model interval relations in such a way that intervals can tolerate a certain amount of overlap without being in conflict. In one of the most natural generalizations of tolerance graphs with direct applications in the comparison of DNA sequences from different organisms, namely multitolerance graphs, two tolerances are allowed for each interval - one from the left and one from the right side. Several efficient algorithms for optimization problems that are NP-hard in general graphs have been designed for tolerance and multitolerance graphs. In spite of this progress, the complexity status of some fundamental algorithmic problems on tolerance and multitolerance graphs, such as the dominating set problem, remained unresolved until now, three decades after the introduction of tolerance graphs. In this article we introduce two new geometric representations for tolerance and multitolerance graphs, given by points and line segments in the plane. Apart from being important on their own, these new representations prove to be a powerful tool for deriving both hardness results and polynomial time algorithms. Using them, we surprisingly prove that the dominating set problem can be solved in polynomial time on tolerance graphs and that it is APX-hard on multitolerance graphs, solving thus a longstanding open problem. This problem is the first one that has been discovered with a different complexity status in these two graph classes.

A degree sequence Hajnal--Szemerédi theorem
Published • View PublicationBIB
We say that a graph $G$ has a perfect $H$-packing if there exists a set of vertex-disjoint copies of $H$ which cover all the vertices in $G$. The seminal Hajnal--Szemerédi theorem characterises the minimum degree that ensures a graph $G$ contains a perfect $K_r$-packing. Balogh, Kostochka and Treglown proposed a degree sequence version of the Hajnal--Szemerédi theorem which, if true, gives a strengthening of the Hajnal--Szemerédi theorem. In this paper we prove this conjecture asymptotically. Another fundamental result in the area is the Alon--Yuster theorem which gives a minimum degree condition that ensures a graph contains a perfect $H$-packing for an \emph{arbitrary} graph $H$. We give a wide-reaching generalisation of this result by answering another conjecture of Balogh, Kostochka and Treglown on the degree sequence of a graph that forces a perfect $H$-packing. We also prove a degree sequence result concerning perfect transitive tournament packings in directed graphs. The proofs blend together the regularity and absorbing methods.
Hall-Littlewood symmetric functions via Yamanouchi toppling game
Published • View PublicationBIB
We define a solitary game, the Yamanouchi toppling game, on any connected graph of n vertices. The game arises from the well-known chip-firing game when the usual relation of equivalence defined on the set of all configurations is replaced by a suitable partial order. The set all firing sequences of length m that the player is allowed to perform in the Yamanouchi toppling game is shown to be in bijection with all standard Young tableaux whose shape is a partition of the integer m with at most n-1 parts. The set of all configurations that a player can obtain from a starting configuration is encoded in a suitable formal power series. When the graph is the simple path and each monomial of the series is replaced by a suitable Schur polynomial, we prove that such a series reduces to Hall-Littlewod symmetric polynomials. The same series provides a combinatorial description of orthogonal polynomials when the monomials are replaced by products of moments suitably modified.
Convolutions of Tribonacci, Fuss-Catalan, and Motzkin sequences

We introduce a class of sequences, defined by means of partial Bell polynomials, that contains a basis for the space of linear recurrence sequences with constant coefficients as well as other well-known sequences like Catalan and Motzkin. For the family of `Bell sequences' considered in this paper, we give a general multifold convolution formula and illustrate our result with a few explicit examples.
Combinatorial covers and vanishing of cohomology
Published in Selecta Mathematica 22 (2016), no. 2, 561-594 • View PublicationBIB
We use a Mayer-Vietoris-like spectral sequence to establish vanishing results for the cohomology of complements of linear and elliptic hyperplane arrangements, as part of a more general framework involving duality and abelian duality properties of spaces and groups. In the process, we consider cohomology of local systems with a general, Cohen-Macaulay-type condition. As a result, we recover known vanishing theorems for rank-1 local systems as well as group ring coefficients, and obtain new generalizations.
Langford sequences and a product of digraphs

Skolem and Langford sequences and their many generalizations have applications in numerous areas. The $\otimes_h$-product is a generalization of the direct product of digraphs. In this paper we use the $\otimes_h$-product and super edge-magic digraphs to construct an exponential number of Langford sequences with certain order and defect. We also apply this procedure to extended Skolem sequences.

A Baxter class of a different kind, and other bijective results using tableau sequences ending with a row shape
Published • View PublicationBIB
Tableau sequences of bounded height have been central to the analysis of k-noncrossing set partitions and matchings. We show here that familes of sequences that end with a row shape are particularly compelling and lead to some interesting connections. First, we prove that hesitating tableaux of height at most two ending with a row shape are counted by Baxter numbers. This permits us to define three new Baxter classes which, remarkably, do not obviously possess the antipodal symmetry of other known Baxter classes. We then conjecture that oscillating tableau of height bounded by k ending in a row are in bijection with Young tableaux of bounded height 2k. We prove this conjecture for k at most eight by a generating function analysis. Many of our proofs are analytic in nature, so there are intriguing combinatorial bijections to be found.

Combinatorial families of multilabelled increasing trees and hook-length formulas
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this work we introduce and study various generalizations of the notion of increasingly labelled trees, where the label of a child node is always larger than the label of its parent node, to multilabelled tree families, where the nodes in the tree can get multiple labels. For all tree classes we show characterizations of suitable generating functions for the tree enumeration sequence via differential equations. Furthermore, for several combinatorial classes of multilabelled increasing tree families we present explicit enumeration results. We also present multilabelled increasing tree families of an elliptic nature, where the exponential generating function can be expressed in terms of the Weierstrass-p function or the lemniscate sine function. Furthermore, we show how to translate enumeration formulas for multilabelled increasing trees into hook-length formulas for trees and present a general "reverse engineering" method to discover hook-length formulas associated to such tree families.
