Shuffle quadri-algebra and concatenation
In this article, we study the shuffle quadri-algebra H. We prove the existence of some relations between quadri-algebra laws which constitute shuffle product, the concatenation product and the deconcatenation coproduct. We also show that the underlying shuffle algebra has two module-algebra structures on itself.

Quiver Hall-Littlewood functions and Kostka-Shoji polynomials
Published in Pacific J. Math. 319 (2022) 397-437 • View PublicationBIB
For any triple $(i,a,μ)$ consisting of a vertex $i$ in a quiver $Q$, a positive integer $a$, and a dominant $GL_a$-weight $μ$, we define a quiver current $H^{(i,a)}_μ$ acting on the tensor power $Λ^Q$ of symmetric functions over the vertices of $Q$. These provide a quiver generalization of parabolic Garsia-Jing creation operators in the theory of Hall-Littlewood symmetric functions. For a triple $(\mathbf{i},\mathbf{a},μ(\bullet))$ of sequences of such data, we define the quiver Hall-Littlewood function $H^{\mathbf{i},\mathbf{a}}_{μ(\bullet)}$ as the result of acting on $1\inΛ^Q$ by the corresponding sequence of quiver currents. The quiver Kostka-Shoji polynomials are the expansion coefficients of $H^{\mathbf{i},\mathbf{a}}_{μ(\bullet)}$ in the tensor Schur basis. These polynomials include the Kostka-Foulkes polynomials and parabolic Kostka polynomials (Jordan quiver) and the Kostka-Shoji polynomials (cyclic quiver) as special cases. We show that the quiver Kostka-Shoji polynomials are graded multiplicities in the equivariant Euler characteristic of a vector bundle on Lusztig's convolution diagram determined by the sequences $\mathbf{i},\mathbf{a}$. For certain compositions of currents we conjecture higher cohomology vanishing of the associated vector bundle on Lusztig's convolution diagram. For quivers with no branching we propose an explicit positive formula for the quiver Kostka-Shoji polynomials in terms of catabolizable multitableaux. We also relate our constructions to $K$-theoretic Hall algebras, by realizing the quiver Kostka-Shoji polynomials as natural structure constants and showing that the quiver currents provide a symmetric function lifting of the corresponding shuffle product. In the case of a cyclic quiver, we explain how the quiver currents arise in Saito's vertex representation of the quantum toroidal algebra of type $\mathfrak{sl}_r$.

(t,q) Q-systems, DAHA and quantum toroidal algebras via generalized Macdonald operators
Published • View PublicationBIB
We introduce difference operators on the space of symmetric functions which are a natural generalization of the $(q,t)$-Macdonald operators. In the $t\to\infty$ limit, they satisfy the $A_{N-1}$ quantum $Q$-system. We identify the elements in the spherical $A_{N-1}$ DAHA which are represented by these operators, as well as within the quantum toroidal algebra of $gl_1$ and the elliptic Hall algebra. We present a plethystic, or bosonic, formulation of the generating functions for the generalized Macdonald operators, which we relate to recent work of Bergeron et al. Finally we derive constant term identities for the current that allow to interpret them in terms of shuffle products. In particular we obtain in the $t\to\infty$ limit a shuffle presentation of the quantum $Q$-system relations.

Monotone, free, and boolean cumulants: a shuffle algebra approach
Published in Advances in Mathematics 328 (2018) 112-132 • View PublicationBIB
The theory of cumulants is revisited in the "Rota way", that is, by following a combinatorial Hopf algebra approach. Monotone, free, and boolean cumulants are considered as infinitesimal characters over a particular combinatorial Hopf algebra. The latter is neither commutative nor cocommutative, and has an underlying unshuffle bialgebra structure which gives rise to a shuffle product on its graded dual. The moment-cumulant relations are encoded in terms of shuffle and half-shuffle exponentials. It is then shown how to express concisely monotone, free, and boolean cumulants in terms of each other using the pre-Lie Magnus expansion together with shuffle and half-shuffle logarithms.

Decomposition spaces in Combinatorics
A decomposition space (also called 2-Segal space) is a simplicial object satisfying an exactness condition weaker than the Segal condition: just as the Segal condition expresses composition, the new condition expresses decomposition. It is a general framework for incidence (co)algebras. In this contribution, after establishing a formula for the section coefficients, we survey a large supply of examples, emphasising the notion's firm roots in classical combinatorics. The first batch of examples, similar to binomial posets, serves to illustrate 2 key points: (1) the incidence algebra in question is realised directly from a decomposition space, without a reduction step, and reductions are often given by CULF functors; (2) at the objective level, the convolution algebra is a monoidal structure of species. We encounter the usual Cauchy product of species, the shuffle product of L-species, the Dirichlet product of arithmetic species, the Joyal-Street external product of q-species and the Morrison `Cauchy' product of q-species. In each case a power series representation results from taking cardinality. The external product of q-species exemplifies the fact that Waldhausen's S-construction on an abelian category is a decomposition space, yielding Hall algebras. The next class of examples includes Schmitt's chromatic Hopf algebra, the Faà di Bruno bialgebra, the Butcher-Connes-Kreimer Hopf algebra of trees and variations from operad theory. Similar structures on posets and directed graphs exemplify a general construction of decomposition spaces from directed restriction species. An appetiser on decomposition spaces of symmetric functions is included. We finish by computing the Möbius function in a few cases, and commenting on certain cancellations that occur in the process of taking cardinality, substantiating that these cancellations are not possible at the objective level.
Precedence-constrained scheduling problems parameterized by partial order width
Published • View PublicationBIB
Negatively answering a question posed by Mnich and Wiese (Math. Program. 154(1-2):533-562), we show that P2|prec,$p_j{\in}\{1,2\}$|$C_{\max}$, the problem of finding a non-preemptive minimum-makespan schedule for precedence-constrained jobs of lengths 1 and 2 on two parallel identical machines, is W[2]-hard parameterized by the width of the partial order giving the precedence constraints. To this end, we show that Shuffle Product, the problem of deciding whether a given word can be obtained by interleaving the letters of $k$ other given words, is W[2]-hard parameterized by $k$, thus additionally answering a question posed by Rizzi and Vialette (CSR 2013). Finally, refining a geometric algorithm due to Servakh (Diskretn. Anal. Issled. Oper. 7(1):75-82), we show that the more general Resource-Constrained Project Scheduling problem is fixed-parameter tractable parameterized by the partial order width combined with the maximum allowed difference between the earliest possible and factual starting time of a job.

Schubert polynomials, slide polynomials, Stanley symmetric functions and quasi-Yamanouchi pipe dreams
Published • View PublicationBIB
We introduce two new bases for polynomials that lift monomial and fundamental quasisymmetric functions to the full polynomial ring. By defining a new condition on pipe dreams, called quasi-Yamanouchi, we give a positive combinatorial rule for expanding Schubert polynomials into these new bases that parallels the expansion of Schur functions into fundamental quasisymmetric functions. As a result, we obtain a refinement of the stable limits of Schubert polynomials to Stanley symmetric functions. We also give combinatorial rules for the positive structure constants of these bases that generalize the quasi-shuffle product and shuffle product, respectively. We use this to give a Littlewood--Richardson rule for expanding a product of Schubert polynomials into fundamental slide polynomials and to give formulas for products of Stanley symmetric functions in terms of Schubert structure constants.

Leading log expansion of combinatorial Dyson Schwinger equations
We study combinatorial Dyson Schwinger equations, expressed in the Hopf algebra of words with a quasi shuffle product. We map them into an algebra of polynomials in one indeterminate L and show that the leading log expansion one obtains with such a mapping are simple power law like expression

Unshuffling Permutations
Published in Latin American Theoretical Informatics Symposium, LNCS 9644, 509--521, 2016 • View PublicationBIB
A permutation is said to be a square if it can be obtained by shuffling two order-isomorphic patterns. The definition is intended to be the natural counterpart to the ordinary shuffle of words and languages. In this paper, we tackle the problem of recognizing square permutations from both the point of view of algebra and algorithms. On the one hand, we present some algebraic and combinatorial properties of the shuffle product of permutations. We follow an unusual line consisting in defining the shuffle of permutations by means of an unshuffling operator, known as a coproduct. This strategy allows to obtain easy proofs for algebraic and combinatorial properties of our shuffle product. We besides exhibit a bijection between square $(213,231)$-avoiding permutations and square binary words. On the other hand, by using a pattern avoidance criterion on oriented perfect matchings, we prove that recognizing square permutations is $\mathbf{NP}$-complete.
The mechanics of shuffle products and their siblings
Published • View PublicationBIB
We carry on the investigation initiated in [15] : we describe new shuffle products coming from some special functions and group them, along with other products encountered in the literature, in a class of products, which we name $\varphi$-shuffle products. Our paper is dedicated to a study of the latter class, from a combinatorial standpoint. We consider first how to extend Radford's theorem to the products in that class, then how to construct their bi-algebras. As some conditions are necessary do carry that out, we study them closely and simplify them so that they can be seen directly from the definition of the product. We eventually test these conditions on the products mentioned above.

Center problem, Abel equation and the Faa di Bruno Hopf algebra for output feedback
Published in International Mathematics Research Notices, Volume 2017, Issue 17, (2017) 5415-5450 • View PublicationBIB
A combinatorial interpretation is given of Devlin's word problem underlying the classical center-focus problem of Poincare for non-autonomous differential equations. It turns out that the canonical polynomials of Devlin are from the point of view of connected graded Hopf algebras intimately related to the graded components of a Hopf algebra antipode applied to the formal power series of Ferfera. The link is made by passing through control theory since the Abel equation, which describes a center, is equivalent to an output feedback equation, and the Hopf algebra of output feedback is derived from the composition of iterated integrals rather than just the products of iterated integrals, which yields the shuffle algebra. This means that the primary algebraic structure at play in Devlin's approach is actually not the shuffle algebra, but a Faa di Bruno type Hopf algebra, which is defined in terms of the shuffle product but is a distinct algebraic structure.

Applications of shuffle product to restricted decomposition formulas for multiple zeta values
Published in Jour. Number Theory, 144 (2014) 219-233 • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we obtain a recursive formula for the shuffle product and apply it to derive two restricted decomposition formulas for multiple zeta values (MZVs). The first formula generalizes the decomposition formula of Euler and is similar to the restricted formula of Eie and Wei for MZVs with one strings of 1's. The second formula generalizes the previous results to the product of two MZVs with one and two strings of 1's respectively.
Schützenberger's factorization on the (completed) Hopf algebra of $q-$stuffle product
Published • View PublicationBIB
In order to extend the Schützenberger's factorization, the combinatorial Hopf algebra of the $q$-stuffles product is developed systematically in a parallel way with that of the shuffle product and and in emphasizing the Lie elements as studied by Ree. In particular, we will give here an effective construction of pair of bases in duality.
Combinatorics of $φ$-deformed stuffle Hopf algebras
In order to extend the Schützenberger's factorization to general perturbations, the combinatorial aspects of the Hopf algebra of the $φ$-deformed stuffle product is developed systematically in a parallel way with those of the shuffle product.

On the support of the free Lie algebra: the Schützenberger problems
Published • View PublicationBIB
M.-P. Schützenberger asked to determine the support of the free Lie algebra ${\mathcal L}_{{\mathbb Z}_{m}}(A)$ on a finite alphabet $A$ over the ring ${\mathbb Z}_{m}$ of integers $\bmod m$ and all the corresponding pairs of twin and anti-twin words, i.e., words that appear with equal (resp. opposite) coefficients in each Lie polynomial. We study these problems using the adjoint endomorphism $l^{*}$ of the left normed Lie bracketing $l$ of ${\mathcal L}_{{\mathbb Z}_{m}}(A)$. Calculating $l^{*}(w)$ via all factors of a given word $w$ of fixed length and the shuffle product, we recover the result of Duchamp and Thibon $(1989)$ for the support of the free Lie ring in a much more natural way. We rephrase these problems, for words of length $n$, in terms of the action of the left normed multi-linear Lie bracketing $l_{n}$ of ${\mathcal L}_{{\mathbb Z}_{m}}(A)$ - viewed as an element of the group ring of the symmetric group ${\mathcal S}_{n}$ - on $λ$-tabloids, where $λ$ is a partition of $n$. For words $w$ in two letters, represented by a subset $I$ of $[n] = \{1, 2, ..., n \}$, this leads us to the {\em Pascal descent polynomial} $p_{n}(I)$, a particular commutative multi-linear polynomial which equals to a signed binomial coefficient when $|I| = 1$ and allows us to obtain a sufficient condition on $n$ and $I$ in order that $w$ lies in ${\mathcal L}_{{\mathbb Z}_{m}}(A)$. We also have a particular conjecture for twin and anti-twin words for the free Lie ring and show that it is enough to be checked for $|A| = 2$.

Structure theorems of mixable shuffle algebras and free commutative Rota-Baxter algebras
We study the ring theoretical structures of mixable shuffle algebras and their associated free commutative Rota-Baxter algebras. For this study we utilize the connection of the mixable shuffle algebras with the overlapping shuffle algebra of Hazewinkel, quasi-shuffle algebras of Hoffman and quasi-symmetric functions. This connection allows us to apply methods and results on shuffle products and Lyndon words on ordered sets. As a result, we obtain structure theorems for a large class of mixable shuffle algebras and free commutative Rota-Baxter algebras with various coefficient rings.

Analytic aspects of the shuffle product
Published in Dans Proceedings of the 25th Annual Symposium on the Theoretical Aspects of Computer Science - STACS 2008, Bordeaux : France (2008) • Search Publication
There exist very lucid explanations of the combinatorial origins of rational and algebraic functions, in particular with respect to regular and context free languages. In the search to understand how to extend these natural correspondences, we find that the shuffle product models many key aspects of D-finite generating functions, a class which contains algebraic. We consider several different takes on the shuffle product, shuffle closure, and shuffle grammars, and give explicit generating function consequences. In the process, we define a grammar class that models D-finite generating functions.
New identities in dendriform algebras
Published in Journal of Algebra 320, 708-727 (2008) • View PublicationBIB
Dendriform structures arise naturally in algebraic combinatorics (where they allow, for example, the splitting of the shuffle product into two pieces) and through Rota-Baxter algebra structures (the latter appear, among others, in differential systems and in the renormalization process of pQFT). We prove new combinatorial identities in dendriform dialgebras that appear to be strongly related to classical phenomena, such as the combinatorics of Lyndon words, rewriting rules in Lie algebras, or the fine structure of the Malvenuto-Reutenauer algebra. One of these identities is an abstract noncommutative, dendriform, generalization of the Bohnenblust-Spitzer identity and of an identity involving iterated Chen integrals due to C.S. Lam.

Congruences Compatible with the Shuffle Product
Published in Formal Power Series and Algebraic Combinatorics (2000) 422-431 • Search Publication
This article is devoted to the study of monoids which can be endowed with a shuffle product with coefficients in a semiring. We show that, when the multiplicities do not belong to a ring with prime characteristic, such a monoid is a monoid of traces. When the characteristic is prime, we give a decomposition of the congruences $\equiv$ (or relators $R$) such that $A^*/\_\equiv=< A; R>$ admits a shuffle product. This decomposition involves only addition of primitive elements to the successive quotients. To end with, we study the compatibility with Magnus transformation and examine the case of congruences which are homogeneous for some weight function. The existence of such a weight function is also showed for congruences of depth one.
