Necessary Spectral Conditions for Coloring Hypergraphs
Published in J. Combinatorial Computing and Machine Computing, 88 (2014), pp. 73-84 • Search Publication
Hoffman proved that for a simple graph $G$, the chromatic number $χ(G)$ obeys $χ(G) \le 1 - \frac{λ_1}{λ_{n}}$ where $λ_1$ and $λ_n$ are the maximal and minimal eigenvalues of the adjacency matrix of $G$ respectively. Lovász later showed that $χ(G) \le 1 - \frac{λ_1}{λ_{n}}$ for any (perhaps negatively) weighted adjacency matrix. In this paper, we give a probabilistic proof of Lovász's theorem, then extend the technique to derive generalizations of Hoffman's theorem when allowed a certain proportion of edge-conflicts. Using this result, we show that if a 3-uniform hypergraph is 2-colorable, then $\bar d \le -\frac{3}{2}λ_{\min}$ where $\bar d$ is the average degree and $λ_{\min}$ is the minimal eigenvalue of the underlying graph. We generalize this further for $k$-uniform hypergraphs, for the cases $k=4$ and $5$, by considering several variants of the underlying graph.

On graphs with maximum Harary spectral radius
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $G$ be a simple graph with vertex set $V(G) = \{v_1 ,v_2 ,\cdots ,v_n\}$. The Harary matrix $RD(G)$ of $G$, which is initially called the reciprocal distance matrix, is an $n \times n$ matrix whose $(i,j)$-entry is equal to $\frac{1}{d_{ij}}$ if $i\not=j$ and $0$ otherwise, where $d_{ij}$ is the distance of $v_i$ and $v_j$ in $G$. In this paper, we characterize graphs with maximum spectral radius of Harary matrix in three classes of simple connected graphs with $n$ vertices: graphs with fixed matching number, bipartite graphs with fixed matching number, and graphs with given number of cut edges, respectively.
The Cartesian product of graphs with loops
Published • View PublicationBIB
We extend the definition of the Cartesian product to graphs with loops and show that the Sabidussi-Vizing unique factorization theorem for connected finite simple graphs still holds in this context for all connected finite graphs with at least one unlooped vertex. We also prove that this factorization can be computed in O(m) time, where m is the number of edges of the given graph.
Note on the Sum of Powers of Signless Laplacian Eigenvalues of Graphs
For a simple graph $G$ and a real number $α$ $\left(α\neq 0,1\right) $ the graph invariant $s_α\left(G\right) $ is equal to the sum of powers of signless Laplacian eigenvalues of $G$. In this note, we present some new bounds on $s_α\left(G\right) $. As a result of these bounds, we also give some results on incidence energy.
On the ideal of orthogonal representations of a graph in $\mathbb{R}^2$
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we study orthogonal representations of simple graphs $G$ in $\mathbb{R}^d$ from an algebraic perspective in case $d = 2$. Orthogonal representations of graphs, introduced by Lovász, are maps from the vertex set to $\mathbb{R}^d$ where non-adjacent vertices are sent to orthogonal vectors. We exhibit algebraic properties of the ideal generated by the equations expressing this condition and deduce geometric properties of the variety of orthogonal embeddings for $d=2$ and $\mathbb{R}$ replaced by an arbitrary field. In particular, we classify when the ideal is radical and provide a reduced primary decomposition if $\sqrt{-1} \not\in K$. This leads to a description of the variety of orthogonal embeddings as a union of varieties defined by prime ideals. In particular, this applies to the motivating case $K = \mathbb{R}$.

Randic energy of specific graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $G$ be a simple graph with vertex set $V(G) = \{v_1, v_2,..., v_n\}$. The Randić matrix of $G$, denoted by $R(G)$, is defined as the $n\times n$ matrix whose $(i,j)$-entry is $(d_id_j)^{\frac{-1}{2}}$ if $v_i$ and $v_j$ are adjacent and $0$ for another cases. Let the eigenvalues of the Randić matrix $R(G)$ be $ρ_1\geq ρ_2\geq ...\geq ρ_n$ which are the roots of the Randić characteristic polynomial $\prod_{i=1}^n (ρ-ρ_i)$. The Randić energy $RE$ of $G$ is the sum of absolute values of the eigenvalues of $R(G)$. In this paper we compute the Randić characteristic polynomial and the Randić energy for specific graphs $G$.

Uniform regular weighted graphs with large degree: Wigner's law, asymptotic freeness and graphons limit
For each $N\geq 1$, let $G_N$ be a simple random graph on the set of vertices $[N]=\{1,2, ..., N\}$, which is invariant by relabeling of the vertices. The asymptotic behavior as $N$ goes to infinity of correlation functions: $$ \mathfrak C_N(T)= \mathbb E\bigg[ \prod_{(i,j) \in T} \Big(\mathbf 1_{\big(\{i,j\} \in G_N \big)} - \mathbb P(\{i,j\} \in G_N) \Big)\bigg], \ T \subset [N]^2 \textrm{finite}$$ furnishes informations on the asymptotic spectral properties of the adjacency matrix $A_N$ of $G_N$. Denote by $d_N = N\times \mathbb P(\{i,j\} \in G_N) $ and assume $d_N, N-d_N\underset{N \rightarrow \infty}{\longrightarrow} \infty$. If $\mathfrak C_N(T) =\big(\frac{d_N}N\big)^{|T|} \times O\big(d_N^{-\frac {|T|}2}\big)$ for any $T$, the standardized empirical eigenvalue distribution of $A_N$ converges in expectation to the semicircular law and the matrix satisfies asymptotic freeness properties in the sense of free probability theory. We provide such estimates for uniform $d_N$-regular graphs $G_{N,d_N}$, under the additional assumption that $|\frac N 2 - d_N- η\sqrt{d_N}| \underset{N \rightarrow \infty}{\longrightarrow} \infty$ for some $η>0$. Our method applies also for simple graphs whose edges are labelled by i.i.d. random variables.

Turán's Problem for Trees
Published in J. Comb. Number Theory 3(2011), no.1, 51-69 • Search Publication
For a forbidden graph $L$, let $ex(p;L)$ denote the maximal number of edges in a simple graph of order $p$ not containing $L$. Let $T_n$ denote the unique tree on $n$ vertices with maximal degree $n-2$, and let $T_n^*=(V,E)$ be the tree on $n$ vertices with $V=\{v_0,v_1,\ldots,v_{n-1}\}$ and $E=\{v_0v_1,\ldots,v_0v_{n-3},v_{n-3}v_{n-2},v_{n-2}v_{n-1}\}$. In the paper we give exact values of $ex(p;T_n)$ and $ex(p;T_n^*)$.
Realization of groups with pairing as Jacobians of finite graphs
Published in Annals of Combinatorics, December 2018, Volume 22, Issue 4, pp 781-801 • View PublicationBIB
We study which groups with pairing can occur as the Jacobian of a finite graph. We provide explicit constructions of graphs whose Jacobian realizes a large fraction of odd groups with a given pairing. Conditional on the generalized Riemann hypothesis, these constructions yield all groups with pairing of odd order, and unconditionally, they yield all groups with pairing whose prime factors are sufficiently large. For groups with pairing of even order, we provide a partial answer to this question, for a certain restricted class of pairings. Finally, we explore which finite abelian groups occur as the Jacobian of a simple graph. There exist infinite families of finite abelian groups that do not occur as the Jacobians of simple graphs.

Curvature from Graph Colorings
Given a finite simple graph G=(V,E) with chromatic number c and chromatic polynomial C(x). Every vertex graph coloring f of G defines an index i_f(x) satisfying the Poincare-Hopf theorem sum_x i_f(x)=chi(G). As a variant to the index expectation result we prove that E[i_f(x)] is equal to curvature K(x) satisfying Gauss-Bonnet sum_x K(x) = χ(G), where the expectation is the average over the finite probability space containing the C(c) possible colorings with c colors, for which each coloring has the same probability.

Characterizing binary matroids with no $P_9$-minor
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we give a complete characterization of binary matroids with no $P_9$-minor. A 3-connected binary matroid $M$ has no $P_9$-minor if and only if $M$ is one of the internally 4-connected non-regular minors of a special 16-element matroid $Y_{16}$, a 3-connected regular matroid, a binary spike with rank at least four, or a matroid obtained by 3-summing copies of the Fano matroid to a 3-connected cographic matroid $M^*(K_{3, n})$, $M^*(K_{3, n}^{\prime})$, $M^*(K_{3, n}^{\prime\prime})$, or $M^*(K_{3, n}^{\prime\prime\prime})$ ($n\ge 2$). Here the simple graphs $K_{3, n}^{\prime}, K_{3, n}^{\prime\prime}$, and $K_{3, n}^{\prime\prime\prime}$ are obtained from $K_{3, n}$ by adding one, two, or three edges in the color class of size three, respectively.

Relations between edge removing and edge subdivision concerning domination number of a graph
Let $e$ be an edge of a connected simple graph $G$. The graph obtained by removing (subdividing) an edge $e$ from $G$ is denoted by $G-e$ ($G_e$). As usual, $γ(G)$ denotes the domination number of $G$. We call $G$ an SR-graph if $γ(G-e) = γ(G_e)$ for any edge $e$ of $G$, and $G$ is an ASR-graph if $γ(G - e) \neq (G_e)$ for any edge $e$ of $G$. In this work we give several examples of SR and ASR-graphs. Also, we characterize SR-trees and show that ASR-graphs are $γ$-insensitive.
Minimum Weight Resolving Sets of Grid Graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
For a simple graph $G=(V,E)$ and for a pair of vertices $u,v \in V$, we say that a vertex $w \in V$ resolves $u$ and $v$ if the shortest path from $w$ to $u$ is of a different length than the shortest path from $w$ to $v$. A set of vertices ${R \subseteq V}$ is a resolving set if for every pair of vertices $u$ and $v$ in $G$, there exists a vertex $w \in R$ that resolves $u$ and $v$. The minimum weight resolving set problem is to find a resolving set $M$ for a weighted graph $G$ such that$\sum_{v \in M} w(v)$ is minimum, where $w(v)$ is the weight of vertex $v$. In this paper, we explore the possible solutions of this problem for grid graphs $P_n \square P_m$ where $3\leq n \leq m$. We give a complete characterisation of solutions whose cardinalities are 2 or 3, and show that the maximum cardinality of a solution is $2n-2$. We also provide a characterisation of a class of minimals whose cardinalities range from $4$ to $2n-2$.

A transfer principle and applications to eigenvalue estimates for graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we prove a variant of the Burger-Brooks transfer principle which, combined with recent eigenvalue bounds for surfaces, allows to obtain upper bounds on the eigenvalues of graphs as a function of their genus. More precisely, we show the existence of a universal constants $C$ such that the $k$-th eigenvalue $λ_k^{nr}$ of the normalized Laplacian of a graph $G$ of (geometric) genus $g$ on $n$ vertices satisfies $$λ_k^{nr}(G) \leq C \frac{d_{\max}(g+k)}{n},$$ where $d_{\max}$ denotes the maximum valence of vertices of the graph. This result is tight up to a change in the value of the constant $C$, and improves recent results of Kelner, Lee, Price and Teng on bounded genus graphs. To show that the transfer theorem might be of independent interest, we relate eigenvalues of the Laplacian on a metric graph to the eigenvalues of its simple graph models, and discuss an application to the mesh partitioning problem, extending pioneering results of Miller-Teng-Thurston-Vavasis and Spielman-Tang to arbitrary meshes.

Permanental polynomials of skew adjacency matrices of oriented graphs
Published in Journal of Lanzhou University: Natural Sciences, 52(5) (2016) 681--686 • View PublicationBIB
Let $G^σ$ be an orientation of a simple graph $G$. In this paper, the permanental polynomial of an oriented graph $G^σ$ is introduced. The coefficients of the permanental polynomial of $G^σ$ are interpreted in terms of the graph structure of $G^σ$, and it is proved that all orientations $G^σ$ of $G$ have the same permanental polynomial if and only if $G$ has no even cycles. Furthermore, the roots of the permanental polynomial of $G^σ$ are studied.

The Maximal Matching Energy of Tricyclic Graphs
Gutman and Wagner proposed the concept of the matching energy (ME) and pointed out that the chemical applications of ME go back to the 1970s. Let $G$ be a simple graph of order $n$ and $μ_1,μ_2,\ldots,μ_n$ be the roots of its matching polynomial. The matching energy of $G$ is defined to be the sum of the absolute values of $μ_{i}\ (i=1,2,\ldots,n)$. Gutman and Cvetkoić determined the tricyclic graphs on $n$ vertices with maximal number of matchings by a computer search for small values of $n$ and by an induction argument for the rest. Based on this result, in this paper, we characterize the graphs with the maximal value of matching energy among all tricyclic graphs, and completely determine the tricyclic graphs with the maximal matching energy. We prove our result by using Coulson-type integral formula of matching energy, which is similar as the method to comparing the energies of two quasi-order incomparable graphs.

On the spectral radius of a class of non-odd-bipartite even uniform hypergraphs
Published in Linear Algebra and its Applications, 2015, 480: 93-106 • View PublicationBIB
In order to investigate the non-odd-bipartiteness of even uniform hypergraphs, starting from a simple graph $G$, we construct a generalized power of $G$, denoted by $G^{k,s}$, which is obtained from $G$ by blowing up each vertex into a $k$-set and each edge into a $(k-2s)$-set, where $s \le k/2$. When $s < k/2$, $G^{k,s}$ is always odd-bipartite. We show that $G^{k,{k \over 2}}$ is non-odd-bipartite if and only if $G$ is non-bipartite, and find that $G^{k,{k \over 2}}$ has the same adjacency (respectively, signless Laplacian) spectral radius as $G$. So the results involving the adjacency or signless Laplacian spectral radius of a simple graph $G$ hold for $G^{k,{k \over 2}}$. In particular, we characterize the unique graph with minimum adjacency or signless Laplacian spectral radius among all non-odd-bipartite hypergraphs $G^{k,{k \over 2}}$ of fixed order, and prove that $\sqrt{2+\sqrt{5}}$ is the smallest limit point of the non-odd-bipartite hypergraphs $G^{k,{k \over 2}}$. In addition we obtain some results for the spectral radii of the weakly irreducible nonnegative tensors.

We disprove two conjectures by You and Yang on the extremal values of $S_α(G)$ among bipartite graphs and among graphs with bounded connectivity.

Complex Two-Graphs via Equiangular Tight Frames
In `A survey of two-graphs' \cite{Sei}, J.J. Seidel lays out the connections between simple graphs, two-graphs, equiangular lines and strongly regular graph. It is well known that there is a one-to-one correspondence between regular two-graphs and equiangular tight frames. This article gives a generalization of two-graphs for which these connections can be mimicked using roots of unity beyond $\pm 1$.
