Vertex decomposability of complexes associated to forests
In this article, we discuss the vertex decomposability of three well-studied simplicial complexes associated to forests. In particular, we show that the bounded degree complex of a forest and the complex of directed trees of a multidiforest are vertex decomposable. We then prove that the non-cover complex of a forest is either contractible or homotopy equivalent to a sphere. Finally, we provide a complete characterization of forests whose non-cover complexes are vertex decomposable.

Domination numbers and noncover complexes of hypergraphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $\mathcal{H}$ be a hypergraph on a finite set $V$. A {\em cover} of $\mathcal{H}$ is a set of vertices that meets all edges of $\mathcal{H}$. If $W$ is not a cover of $\mathcal{H}$, then $W$ is said to be a {\em noncover} of $\mathcal{H}$. The {\em noncover complex} of $\mathcal{H}$ is the abstract simplicial complex whose faces are the noncovers of $\mathcal{H}$. In this paper, we study homological properties of noncover complexes of hypergraphs. In particular, we obtain an upper bound on their Leray numbers. The bound is in terms of hypergraph domination numbers. Also, our proof idea is applied to compute the homotopy type of the noncover complexes of certain uniform hypergraphs, called {\em tight paths} and {\em tight cycles}. This extends to hypergraphs known results on graphs.

Shellable tilings on relative simplicial complexes and their h-vectors
Published • View PublicationBIB
An h-tiling on a finite simplicial complex is a partition of its geometric realization by maximal simplices deprived of several codimension one faces together with possibly their remaining face of highest codimension. In this last case, the tiles are said to be critical. An h-tiling thus induces a partitioning of its face poset by closed or semi-open intervals. We prove the existence of h-tilings on every finite simplicial complex after finitely many stellar subdivisions at maximal simplices. These tilings are moreover shellable. We also prove that the number of tiles of each type used by a tiling, encoded by its h-vector, is determined by the number of critical tiles of each index it uses, encoded by its critical vector. In the case of closed triangulated manifolds, these vectors satisfy some palindromic property. We finally study the behavior of tilings under any stellar subdivision.
Inequalities of invariants on Stanley-Reisner rings of Cohen-Macaulay simplicial complexes
Published • View PublicationBIB
The goal of the present paper is the study of some algebraic invariants of Stanley-Reisner rings of Cohen-Macaulay simplicial complexes of dimension $d - 1$. We prove that the inequality $d \leq \mathrm{reg}(Δ) \cdot \mathrm{type}(Δ)$ holds for any $(d-1)$-dimensional Cohen-Macaulay simplicial complex $Δ$ satisfying $Δ=\mathrm{core}(Δ)$, where $\mathrm{reg}(Δ)$ (resp. $\mathrm{type}(Δ)$) denotes the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity (resp. Cohen-Macaulay type) of the Stanley-Reisner ring $\Bbbk[Δ]$. Moreover, for any given integers $d,r,t$ satisfying $r,t \geq 2$ and $r \leq d \leq rt$, we construct a Cohen-Macaulay simplicial complex $Δ(G)$ as an independent complex of a graph $G$ such that $\dim(Δ(G))=d-1$, $\mathrm{reg}(Δ(G))=r$ and $\mathrm{type}(Δ(G))=t$.

Complexes, Graphs, Homotopy, Products and Shannon Capacity
A finite abstract simplicial complex G defines the Barycentric refinement graph phi(G) = (G,{ (a,b), a subset b or b subset a }) and the connection graph psi(G) = (G,{ (a,b), a intersected with b not empty }). We note here that both functors phi and psi from complexes to graphs are invertible on the image (Theorem 1) and that G,phi(G),psi(G) all have the same automorphism group and that the Cartesian product of G corresponding to the Stanley-Reisner product of phi(G) and the strong Shannon product of psi(G), have the product automorphism groups. Second, we see that if G is a Barycentric refinement, then phi(G) and psi(G) are graph homotopic (Theorem 2). Third, if gamma is the geometric realization functor, assigning to a complex or to a graph the geometric realization of its clique complex, then gamma(G) and gamma(phi(G)) and gamma(psi(G)) are all classically homotopic for a Barycentric refined simplicial complex G (Theorem 3). The Barycentric assumption is necessary in Theorem 2 and 3. There is compatibility with Cartesian products of complexes which manifests in the strong graph product of connection graphs: if two graphs A,A' are homotopic and B,B' are homotopic, then A . B is homotopic to A' . B' (Theorem 4) leading to a commutative ring of homotopy classes of graphs. Finally, we note (Theorem 5) that for all simplicial complexes G as well as product G=G_1 x G_2 ... x G_k, the Shannon capacity Theta(psi(G)) of psi(G) is equal to the number m of zero-dimensional sets in G. An explicit Lowasz umbrella in R^m leads to the Lowasz number theta(G) leq m and so Theta(psi(G))=theta(psi(G))=m making Theta compatible with disjoint union addition and strong multiplication.

Persistent Laplacians: properties, algorithms and implications
Published • View PublicationBIB
We present a thorough study of the theoretical properties and devise efficient algorithms for the \emph{persistent Laplacian}, an extension of the standard combinatorial Laplacian to the setting of pairs (or, in more generality, sequences) of simplicial complexes $K \hookrightarrow L$, which was independently introduced by Lieutier et al. and by Wang et al. In particular, in analogy with the non-persistent case, we first prove that the nullity of the $q$-th persistent Laplacian $Δ_q^{K,L}$ equals the $q$-th persistent Betti number of the inclusion $(K \hookrightarrow L)$. We then present an initial algorithm for finding a matrix representation of $Δ_q^{K,L}$, which itself helps interpret the persistent Laplacian. We exhibit a novel relationship between the persistent Laplacian and the notion of Schur complement of a matrix which has several important implications. In the graph case, it both uncovers a link with the notion of effective resistance and leads to a persistent version of the Cheeger inequality. This relationship also yields an additional, very simple algorithm for finding (a matrix representation of) the $q$-th persistent Laplacian which in turn leads to a novel and fundamentally different algorithm for computing the $q$-th persistent Betti number for a pair $(K,L)$ which can be significantly more efficient than standard algorithms. Finally, we study persistent Laplacians for simplicial filtrations and present novel stability results for their eigenvalues. Our work brings methods from spectral graph theory, circuit theory, and persistent homology together with a topological view of the combinatorial Laplacian on simplicial complexes.

Spectral sequences of a Morse shelling
Published • View PublicationBIB
We recently introduced a notion of tilings of geometric realizations of finite relative simplicial complexes and related those tilings to the discrete Morse theory of R. Forman, especially when they have the property of being shellable, a property shared by the classical shellable complexes. We now observe that every such tiling supports a quiver which is acyclic precisely when the tiling is shellable and then, that every shelling induces two spectral sequences which converge to the relative (co)homology of the complex. Their first pages are free modules over the critical tiles of the tiling.

Ample simplicial complexes

Motivated by potential applications in network theory, engineering and computer science, we study $r$-ample simplicial complexes. These complexes can be viewed as finite approximations to the Rado complex which has a remarkable property of {\it indestructibility,} in the sense that removing any finite number of its simplexes leaves a complex isomorphic to itself. We prove that an $r$-ample simplicial complex is simply connected and $2$-connected for $r$ large. The number $n$ of vertexes of an $r$-ample simplicial complex satisfies $\exp(Ω(\frac{2^r}{\sqrt{r}}))$. We use the probabilistic method to establish the existence of $r$-ample simplicial complexes with $n$ vertexes for any $n>r 2^r 2^{2^r}$. Finally, we introduce the iterated Paley simplicial complexes, which are explicitly constructed $r$-ample simplicial complexes with nearly optimal number of vertexes.
Completing and extending shellings of vertex decomposable complexes
Published in SIAM J. Discrete Math. 36, Iss. 2 (2022) • View PublicationBIB
We say that a pure $d$-dimensional simplicial complex $Δ$ on $n$ vertices is \emph{shelling completable} if $Δ$ can be realized as the initial sequence of some shelling of $Δ_{n-1}^{(d)}$, the $d$-skeleton of the $(n-1)$-dimensional simplex. A well-known conjecture of Simon posits that any shellable complex is shelling completable. In this note we prove that vertex decomposable complexes are shelling completable. In fact we show that if $Δ$ is a vertex decomposable complex then there exists an ordering of its ground set $V$ such that adding the revlex smallest missing $(d+1)$-subset of $V$ results in a complex that is again vertex decomposable. We explore applications to matroids and shifted complexes, as well as connections to ridge-chordal complexes and $k$-decomposability. We also show that if $Δ$ is a $d$-dimensional complex on at most $d+3$ vertices then the notions of shellable, vertex decomposable, shelling completable, and extendably shellable are all equivalent.
Hopf monoids of ordered simplicial complexes
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study pure ordered simplicial complexes (i.e., simplicial complexes with a linear order on their ground sets) from the Hopf-theoretic point of view. We define a \textit{Hopf class} to be a family of pure ordered simplicial complexes that give rise to a Hopf monoid under join and deletion/contraction. The prototypical Hopf class is the family of ordered matroids. The idea of a Hopf class allows us to give a systematic study of simplicial complexes related to matroids, including shifted complexes, broken-circuit complexes, and \textit{unbounded matroids} (which arise from unbounded generalized permutohedra with 0/1 coordinates). We compute the antipodes in two cases: \textit{facet-initial complexes} (a much larger class than shifted complexes) and unbounded ordered matroids. In the latter case, we embed the Hopf monoid of ordered matroids into the Hopf monoid of ordered generalized permutohedra, enabling us to compute the antipode using the topological method of Aguiar and Ardila. The calculation is complicated by the appearance of certain auxiliary simplicial complexes that we call \textit{Scrope complexes}, whose Euler characteristics control certain coefficients of the antipode. The resulting antipode formula is multiplicity-free and cancellation-free.

The Betti Number of the Independence Complex of Ternary Graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Given a graph $G$, the \textit{independence complex} $I(G)$ is the simplicial complex whose faces are the independent sets of $V(G)$. Let $\tilde{b}_i$ denote the $i$-th reduced Betti number of $I(G)$, and let $b(G)$ denote the sum of $\tilde{b}_i(G)$'s. A graph is ternary if it does not contain induced cycles with length divisible by three. G. Kalai and K. Meshulam conjectured that $b(G)\le 1$ whenever $G$ is ternary. We prove this conjecture. This extends a recent results proved by Chudnovsky, Scott, Seymour and Spirkl that for any ternary graph $G$, the number of independent sets with even cardinality and the independent sets with odd cardinality differ by at most 1.

Simplicial homeomorphs and trace-bounded hypergraphs
Published in Discrete Analysis 2022 • View PublicationBIB
Our first main result is a uniform bound, in every dimension $k \in \mathbb N$, on the topological Turán numbers of $k$-dimensional simplicial complexes: for each $k \in \mathbb N$, there is a $λ_k \ge k^{-2k^2}$ such that for any $k$-complex $\mathcal{S}$, every $k$-complex on $n \ge n_0(\mathcal{S})$ vertices with at least $n^{k+1 - λ_k}$ facets contains a homeomorphic copy of $\mathcal{S}$. This was previously known only in dimensions one and two, both by highly dimension-specific arguments: the existence of $λ_1$ is a result of Mader from 1967, and the existence of $λ_2$ was suggested by Linial in 2006 and recently proved by Keevash-Long-Narayanan-Scott. We deduce this geometric fact from a purely combinatorial result about trace-bounded hypergraphs, where an $r$-partite $r$-graph $H$ with partite classes $V_1, V_2, \dots, V_r$ is said to be $d$-trace-bounded if for each $2 \le i \le r$, all the vertices of $V_i$ have degree at most $d$ in the trace of $H$ on $V_1 \cup V_2 \cup \dots \cup V_i$. Our second main result is the following estimate for the Turán numbers of degenerate trace-bounded hypergraphs: for all $r \ge 2$ and $d\in\mathbb N$, there is an $α_{r,d} \ge (5rd)^{1-r}$ such that for any $d$-trace-bounded $r$-partite $r$-graph $H$, every $r$-graph on $n \ge n_0(H)$ vertices with at least $n^{r - α_{r,d}}$ edges contains a copy of $H$. This strengthens a result of Conlon-Fox-Sudakov from 2009 who showed that such a bound holds for $r$-partite $r$-graphs $H$ satisfying the stronger hypothesis that the vertex-degrees in all but one of its partite classes are bounded (in $H$, as opposed to in its traces).

Decompositions of quasirandom hypergraphs into hypergraphs of bounded degree
Published • View PublicationBIB
We prove that any quasirandom uniform hypergraph $H$ can be approximately decomposed into any collection of bounded degree hypergraphs with almost as many edges. In fact, our results also apply to multipartite hypergraphs and even to the sparse setting when the density of $H$ quickly tends to $0$ in terms of the number of vertices of $H$. Our results answer and address questions of Kim, Kühn, Osthus and Tyomkyn; and Glock, Kühn and Osthus as well as Keevash. The provided approximate decompositions exhibit strong quasirandom properties which is very useful for forthcoming applications. Our results also imply approximate solutions to natural hypergraph versions of long-standing graph decomposition problems, as well as several decomposition results for (quasi)random simplicial complexes into various more elementary simplicial complexes such as triangulations of spheres and other manifolds.

Filtered matchings and simplicial complexes
To any finite simplicial complex X, we associate a natural filtration starting from Chari and Joswig's discrete Morse complex and abutting to the matching complex of X. This construction leads to the definition of several homology theories, which we compute in a number of examples. We also completely determine the graded object associated to this filtration in terms of the homology of simpler complexes. This last result provides some connections to the number of vertex-disjoint cycles of a graph.

Morse shellings on products
We recently defined a property of Morse shellability (and tileability) of finite simplicial complexes which extends the classical one and its relations with discrete Morse theory. We now prove that the product of two Morse tileable or shellable simplicial complexes carries Morse tileable or shellable triangulations under some tameness condition, and that any tiling or shelling becomes tame after one barycentric subdivision. We deduce that any finite product of closed manifolds of dimensions less than four carries Morse shellable triangulations whose critical and h-vectors are palindromic. We also prove that the h-vector of a Morse tiling is always palindromic in dimension less than four or in the case of an h-tiling, provided its critical vector is palindromic.

Enumerative and planar combinatorics of trivariate monomial resolutions
The canonical sylvan resolution is a resolution of an arbitrary monomial ideal over a polynomial ring that is minimal and has an explicit combinatorial formula for the differential. The differential is a weighted sum over lattice paths of weights of chain-link fences, which are sequences of faces that are linked to each other via higher-dimensional analogues of spanning trees. Along a lattice path in the three-variable case, these weights can be condensed to a single weight contributing to the combinatorial formula for the differential that bypasses any computation of chain-link fences. The main results in this paper express the sylvan matrix entries for monomial ideals in three variables as a sum over lattice paths of simpler weights that depend only on the number of specific Koszul simplicial complexes that lie along the corresponding lattice path. Certain entries have numerators equal to the number of lattice paths in $\mathbb{N}^2$ that follow specific restrictions.

Green functions of Energized complexes
If h is a ring-valued function on a simplicial complex G we can define two matrices L and g, where the matrix entries are the h energy of homoclinic intersections. We know that the sum over all h values on G is equal to the sum of the Green matrix entries g(x,y). We also have already seen that that the determinants of L or g are both the product of the h(x). In the case where h(x) is the parity of dimension, the sum of the energy values was the standard Euler characteristic and the determinant was a unit. If h(x) was the unit in the ring then L,g are integral quadratic forms which are isospectral and inverse matrices of each other. We prove here that the quadratic energy expression summing over all pairs h(x)^* h(y) of intersecting sets is a signed sum of squares of Green function entries. The quadratic energy expression is Wu characteristic in the case when h is dimension parity. For general h, the quadratic energy expression resembles an Ising Heisenberg type interaction. The conjugate of g is the inverse of L if h takes unit values in a normed ring or in the group of unitary operators in an operator algebra.

Gröbner geometry for skew-symmetric matrix Schubert varieties
Published in Adv. Math. 405 (2022), 108488 • View PublicationBIB
Matrix Schubert varieties are the closures of the orbits of $B\times B$ acting on all $n\times n$ matrices, where $B$ is the group of invertible lower triangular matrices. Extending work of Fulton, Knutson and Miller identified a Gröbner basis for the prime ideals of these varieties. They also showed that the corresponding initial ideals are Stanley-Reisner ideals of shellable simplicial complexes, and derived a related primary decomposition in terms of reduced pipe dreams. These results lead to a geometric proof of the Billey-Jockusch-Stanley formula for a Schubert polynomial, among many other applications. We define skew-symmetric matrix Schubert varieties to be the nonempty intersections of matrix Schubert varieties with the subspace of skew-symmetric matrices. In analogy with Knutson and Miller's work, we describe a natural generating set for the prime ideals of these varieties. We then compute a related Gröbner basis. Using these results, we identify a primary decomposition for the corresponding initial ideals involving certain fpf-involution pipe dreams. We show that these initial ideals are likewise the Stanley-Reisner ideals of shellable simplicial complexes. As an application, we give a geometric proof of an explicit generating function for symplectic Grothendieck polynomials. Our methods differ from Knutson and Miller's and can be used to give new proofs of some of their results, as we explain at the end of this article.

Topology of Clique Complexes of Line Graphs

The clique complex of a graph G is a simplicial complex whose simplices are all the cliques of G, and the line graph L(G) of G is a graph whose vertices are the edges of G and the edges of L(G) are incident edges of G. In this article, we determine the homotopy type of the clique complexes of line graphs for several classes of graphs including triangle-free graphs, chordal graphs, complete multipartite graphs, wheel-free graphs, and 4-regular circulant graphs. We also give a closed form formula for the homotopy type of these complexes in several cases.

Betti numbers of weighted oriented graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $\mathcal{D}$ be a weighted oriented graph and $I(\mathcal{D})$ be its edge ideal. In this paper, we investigate the Betti numbers of $I(\mathcal{D})$ via upper-Koszul simplicial complexes, Betti splittings and the mapping cone construction. In particular, we provide recursive formulas for the Betti numbers of edge ideals of several classes of weighted oriented graphs. We also identify classes of weighted oriented graphs whose edge ideals have a unique extremal Betti number which allows us to compute the regularity and projective dimension for the identified classes. Furthermore, we characterize the structure of a weighted oriented graph $\mathcal{D}$ on $n$ vertices such that $\textrm{pdim } (R/I(\mathcal{D}))=n$ where $R=k[x_1,\ldots, x_n]$.
