The six-vertex model on random planar maps revisited
Published • View PublicationBIB
We address the six vertex model on a random lattice, which in combinatorial terms corresponds to the enumeration of weighted 4-valent planar maps equipped with an Eulerian orientation. This problem was exactly, albeit non-rigorously solved by Ivan Kostov in 2000 using matrix integral techniques. We convert Kostov's work to a combinatorial argument involving functional equations coming from recursive decompositions of the maps, which we solve rigorously using complex analysis. We then investigate modular properties of the solution, which lead to simplifications in certain special cases. In particular, in two special cases of combinatorial interest we rederive the formulae discovered by Bousquet-Mélou and the first author.

Yang-Baxter random fields and stochastic vertex models
Bijectivization refines the Yang-Baxter equation into a pair of local Markov moves which randomly update the configuration of the vertex model. Employing this approach, we introduce new Yang-Baxter random fields of Young diagrams based on spin $q$-Whittaker and spin Hall-Littlewood symmetric functions. We match certain scalar Markovian marginals of these fields with (1) the stochastic six vertex model; (2) the stochastic higher spin six vertex model; and (3) a new vertex model with pushing which generalizes the $q$-Hahn PushTASEP introduced recently by Corwin-Matveev-Petrov (arXiv:1811.06475). Our matchings include models with two-sided stationary initial data, and we obtain Fredholm determinantal expressions for the $q$-Laplace transforms of the height functions of all these models. Moreover, we also discover difference operators acting diagonally on spin $q$-Whittaker or (stable) spin Hall-Littlewood symmetric functions.
Eulerian orientations and the six-vertex model on planar map

We address the enumeration of planar 4-valent maps equipped with an Eulerian orientation by two different methods, and compare the solutions we thus obtain. With the first method we enumerate these orientations as well as a restricted class which we show to be in bijection with general Eulerian orientations. The second method, based on the work of Kostov, allows us to enumerate these 4-valent orientations with a weight on some vertices, corresponding to the six vertex model. We prove that this result generalises both results obtained using the first method, although the equivalence is not immediately clear.

Yang-Baxter field for spin Hall-Littlewood symmetric functions
Published • View PublicationBIB
Employing bijectivisation of summation identities, we introduce local stochastic moves based on the Yang-Baxter equation for $U_q(\widehat{\mathfrak{sl}_2})$. Combining these moves leads to a new object which we call the spin Hall-Littlewood Yang-Baxter field - a probability distribution on two-dimensional arrays of particle configurations on the discrete line. We identify joint distributions along down-right paths in the Yang-Baxter field with spin Hall-Littlewood processes, a generalization of Schur processes. We consider various degenerations of the Yang-Baxter field leading to new dynamic versions of the stochastic six vertex model and of the Asymmetric Simple Exclusion Process.

Hall-Littlewood RSK field
Published • View PublicationBIB
We introduce a randomized Hall-Littlewood RSK algorithm and study its combinatorial and probabilistic properties. On the probabilistic side, a new model --- the Hall-Littlewood RSK field --- is introduced. Its various degenerations contain known objects (the stochastic six vertex model, the asymmetric simple exclusion process) as well as a variety of new ones. We provide formulas for a rich class of observables of these models, extending existing results about Macdonald processes. On the combinatorial side, we establish analogs of properties of the classical RSK algorithm: invertibility, symmetry, and a "bijectivization" of the skew-Cauchy identity.
Between the stochastic six vertex model and Hall-Littlewood processes
We prove that the joint distribution of the values of the height function for the stochastic six vertex model in a quadrant along a down-right path coincides with that for the lengths of the first columns of partitions distributed according to certain Hall-Littlewood processes. In the limit when one of the quadrant axes becomes continuous, we also show that the two-dimensional random field of the height function values has the same distribution as the lengths of the first columns of partitions from certain ascending Hall-Littlewood processes evolving under a Robinson-Schensted-Knuth type Markovian evolution.

Stochastic higher spin six vertex model and q-TASEPs
Published • View PublicationBIB
We present two new connections between the inhomogeneous stochastic higher spin six vertex model in a quadrant and integrable stochastic systems from the Macdonald processes hierarchy. First, we show how Macdonald $q$-difference operators with $t=0$ (an algebraic tool crucial for studying the corresponding Macdonald processes) can be utilized to get $q$-moments of the height function $\mathfrak{h}$ in the higher spin six vertex model first computed in arXiv:1601.05770 using Bethe ansatz. This result in particular implies that for the vertex model with the step Bernoulli boundary condition, the value of $\mathfrak{h}$ at an arbitrary point $(N+1,T)\in\mathbb{Z}_{\ge2}\times\mathbb{Z}_{\ge1}$ has the same distribution as the last component $λ_N$ of a random partition under a specific $t=0$ Macdonald measure. On the other hand, it is known that $\mathbf{x}_N:=λ_N-N$ can be identified with the location of the $N$th particle in a certain discrete time $q$-TASEP started from the step initial configuration. The second construction we present is a coupling of this $q$-TASEP and the higher spin six vertex model (with the step Bernoulli boundary condition) along time-like paths providing an independent probabilistic explanation of the equality of $\mathfrak{h}(N+1,T)$ and $\mathbf{x}_N+N$ in distribution. Combined with the identification of averages of observables between the stochastic higher spin six vertex model and Schur measures (which are $t=q$ Macdonald measures) obtained recently in arXiv:1608.01553, this produces GUE Tracy--Widom asymptotics for a discrete time $q$-TASEP with the step initial configuration and special jump parameters.

Lectures on Integrable probability: Stochastic vertex models and symmetric functions
Published • View PublicationBIB
We consider a homogeneous stochastic higher spin six vertex model in a quadrant. For this model we derive concise integral representations for multi-point q-moments of the height function and for the q-correlation functions. At least in the case of the step initial condition, our formulas degenerate in appropriate limits to many known formulas of such type for integrable probabilistic systems in the (1+1)d KPZ universality class, including the stochastic six vertex model, ASEP, various q-TASEPs, and associated zero range processes. Our arguments are largely based on properties of a family of symmetric rational functions (introduced in arXiv:1410.0976) that can be defined as partition functions of the higher spin six vertex model for suitable domains; they generalize classical Hall-Littlewood and Schur polynomials. A key role is played by Cauchy-like summation identities for these functions, which are obtained as a direct corollary of the Yang-Baxter equation for the higher spin six vertex model. These are lecture notes for a course given by A.B. at the Ecole de Physique des Houches in July of 2015. All the results and proofs presented here generalize to the setting of the fully inhomogeneous higher spin six vertex model, see arXiv:1601.05770 for a detailed exposition of the inhomogeneous case.

Higher spin six vertex model and symmetric rational functions

We consider a fully inhomogeneous stochastic higher spin six vertex model in a quadrant. For this model we derive concise integral representations for multi-point q-moments of the height function and for the q-correlation functions. Our arguments are largely based on properties of a family of symmetric rational functions which can be defined as partition functions of the inhomogeneous higher spin six vertex model for suitable domains. In the homogeneous case, such functions were previously studied in http://arxiv.org/abs/1410.0976; they also generalize classical Hall-Littlewood and Schur polynomials. A key role is played by Cauchy-like summation identities for these functions, which are obtained as a direct corollary of the Yang-Baxter equation for the higher spin six vertex model.

Tokuyama's Identity for Factorial Schur Functions
Published • View PublicationBIB
A recent paper of Bump, McNamara and Nakasuji introduced a factorial version of Tokuyama's identity, expressing the partition function of a six vertex model as the product of a t-deformed Vandermonde and a Schur function. Here we provide an extension of their result by exploiting the language of primed shifted tableaux, with its proof based on the use of non-intersecting lattice paths.

Factorial Schur functions and the Yang-Baxter equation
Factorial Schur functions are generalizations of Schur functions that have, in addition to the usual variables, a second family of "shift" parameters. We show that a factorial Schur function times a deformation of the Weyl denominator may be expressed as the partition function of a particular statistical-mechanical system (six vertex model). The proof is based on the Yang-Baxter equation. There is a deformation parameter $t$ which may be specialized in different ways. If $t=-1$, then we recover the expression of the factorial Schur function as a ratio of alternating polynomials. If $t=0$, we recover the description as a sum over tableaux. If $t=\infty$ we recover a description of Lascoux that was previously considered by McNamara. We also are able to prove using the Yang-Baxter equation the asymptotic symmetry of the factorial Schur functions in the shift parameters. Finally, we give a proof using our methods of the dual Cauchy identity for factorial Schur functions. Thus using our methods we are able to give thematic proofs of many of the properties of factorial Schur functions.

Norm of Bethe Wave Function as a Determinant
This is a historical note. Bethe Ansatz solvable models are considered, for example XXZ Heisenberg anti-ferromagnet and Bose gas with delta interaction. Periodic boundary conditions lead to Bethe equation. The square of the norm of Bethe wave function is equal to a determinant of linearized system of Bethe equations (determinant of matrix of second derivatives of Yang action). The proof was first published in Communications in Mathematical Physics, vol 86, page 391 in l982. Also domain wall boundary conditions for 6 vertex model were discovered in the same paper [see Appendix D]. These play an important role for algebraic combinatorics: alternating sign matrices, domino tiling and plane partition. Many publications are devoted to six vertex model with domain wall boundary conditions.

Factorial Schur functions via the six vertex model
For a particular set of Boltzmann weights and a particular boundary condition for the six vertex model in statistical mechanics, we compute explicitly the partition function and show it to be equal to a factorial Schur function, giving a new proof of a theorem of Lascoux.

Refined enumerations of alternating sign matrices: monotone (d,m)-trapezoids with prescribed top and bottom row
Published • View PublicationBIB
Monotone triangles are plane integer arrays of triangular shape with certain monotonicity conditions along rows and diagonals. Their significance is mainly due to the fact that they correspond to $n \times n$ alternating sign matrices when prescribing $(1,2,...,n)$ as bottom row of the array. We define monotone $(d,m)$--trapezoids as monotone triangles with $m$ rows where the $d-1$ top rows are removed. (These objects are also equivalent to certain partial alternating sign matrices.) It is known that the number of monotone triangles with bottom row $(k_1,...,k_n)$ is given by a polynomial $α(n;k_1,...,k_n)$ in the $k_i$'s. The main purpose of this paper is to show that the number of monotone $(d,m)$--trapezoids with prescribed top and bottom row appears as a coefficient in the expansion of a specialization of $α(n;k_1,...,k_n)$ with respect to a certain polynomial basis. This settles a generalization of a recent conjecture of Romik and the author. Among other things, the result is used to express the number of monotone triangles with bottom row $(1,2,...,i-1,i+1,...,j-1,j+1,...,n)$ (which is, by the standard bijection, also the number of $n \times n$ alternating sign matrices with given top two rows) in terms of the number of $n \times n$ alternating sign matrices with prescribed top and bottom row, and, by a formula of Stroganov for the latter numbers, to provide an explicit formula for the first numbers. (A formula of this type was first derived by Karklinsky and Romik using the relation of alternating sign matrices to the six--vertex model.)

On the correlation functions of the domain wall six vertex model
Published in Journal of Statistical Mechanics, volume 2004, number 11 (2004) P11001 • View PublicationBIB
We propose an (essentially combinatorial) approach to the correlation functions of the domain wall six vertex model. We reproduce the boundary 1-point function determinant expression of Bogoliubov, Pronko and Zvonarev, then use that as a building block to obtain analogous expressions for boundary 2-point functions. The latter can be used, at least in principle, to express more general boundary (and bulk) correlation functions as sums over (products of) determinants.
