We characterize genus g canonical curves by the vanishing of combinatorial products of g+1 determinants of Brill-Noether matrices. This also implies the characterization of canonical curves in terms of (g-2)(g-3)/2 theta identities. A remarkable mechanism, based on a basis of H^0(K_C) expressed in terms of Szego kernels, reduces such identities to a simple rank condition for matrices whose entries are logarithmic derivatives of theta functions. Such a basis, together with the Fay trisecant identity, also leads to the solution of the question of expressing the determinant of Brill-Noether matrices in terms of theta functions, without using the problematic Klein-Fay section sigma.

An elliptic $BC_n$ generalization of the classical two parameter Bailey Lemma is proved, and a basic one parameter $BC_n$ Bailey Lemma is obtained as a limiting case. Several summation and transformation formulas associated with the root system $BC_n$ are proved as applications, including a $_6φ_5$ summation formula, a generalized Watson transformation and an unspecialized Rogers--Selberg identity. The last identity is specialized to give an infinite family of multilateral Rogers--Selberg identities. Standard determinant evaluations are then used to compute $B_n$ and $D_n$ generalizations of the Rogers--Ramanujan identities in terms of determinants of theta functions. Starting with the $BC_n$ $_6φ_5$ summation formula, a similar program is followed to prove an infinite family of $D_n$ Euler's Pentagonal Number Theorems.
Shifted and Shiftless Partition Identities II

Let S and T be sets of positive integers and let a be a fixed positive integer. An a-shifted partition identity has the form p(S,n)=p(T,n-a), for all n greater or equal to a. Here p(S,n) is the number partitions of n whose parts are elements of S. For all known nontrivial shifted partition identities, the sets S and T are unions of arithmetic progressions modulo M for some M. In 1987, Andrews found two 1-shifted examples (M=32, 40) and asked whether there were any more. In 1989, Kalvade responded with a further six. In 2000, the first author found 59 new 1-shifted identities using a computer search and showed how these could be proved using the theory of modular functions. Modular transformation of certain shifted identities leads to shiftless partition identities. Again let a be a fixed positive integer, and S, T be distinct sets of positive integers. A shiftless partition identity has the form p(S,n)=p(T,n), for all n not equal to a. In this paper, we show, except in one case, how all known 1-shifted and shiftless identities follow from a four parameter theta function identity due to Jacobi. New shifted and shiftless partition identities are proved.

In this paper we generalize the famous Jacobi's triple product identity, considered as an identity for theta functions with characteristics and their derivatives, to higher genus/dimension. By applying the results and methods developed in our previous paper math.AG/0310085 several generalizations to Siegel modular forms are obtained. These generalizations are identities satisfied by theta functions with characteristics and their derivatives at zero. Equating the coefficients of the Fourier expansion of these relations to zero yields non-trivial combinatorial identities.

Using Krattenthaler's operator method, we give a new proof of Warnaar's recent elliptic extension of Krattenthaler's matrix inversion. Further, using a theta function identity closely related to Warnaar's inversion, we derive summation and transformation formulas for elliptic hypergeometric series of Karlsson-Minton-type. A special case yields a particular summation that was used by Warnaar to derive quadratic, cubic and quartic transformations for elliptic hypergeometric series. Starting from another theta function identity, we derive yet different summation and transformation formulas for elliptic hypergeometric series of Karlsson-Minton-type. These latter identities seem quite unusual and appear to be new already in the trigonometric (i.e., p=0) case.

Using twisted Fock spaces, we formulate and study two twisted versions of the n-point correlation functions of Bloch-Okounkov, and then identify them with q-expectation values of certain functions on the set of (odd) strict partitions. We find closed formulas for the 1-point functions in both cases in terms of Jacobi theta functions. These correlation functions afford several distinct interpretations.
A limiting form of the q-Dixon_4φ_3 summation and related partition identities

By considering a limiting form of the q-Dixon_4φ_3 summation, we prove a weighted partition theorem involving odd parts differing by >= 4. A two parameter refinement of this theorem is then deduced from a quartic reformulation of Goellnitz's (Big) theorem due to Alladi, and this leads to a two parameter extension of Jacobi's triple product identity for theta functions. Finally, refinements of certain modular identities of Alladi connected to the Goellnitz-Gordon series are shown to follow from a limiting form of the q-Dixon_4φ_3 summation.
Partial theta functions. I. Beyond the lost notebook

It is shown how many of the partial theta function identities in Ramanujan's lost notebook can be generalized to infinite families of such identities. Key in our construction is the Bailey lemma and a new generalization of the Jacobi triple product identity. By computing residues around the poles of our identities we find a surprising connection between partial theta functions identities and Garret-Ismail-Stanton-type extensions of multisum Rogers-Ramanujan identities.
New Weighted Rogers-Ramanujan Partition Theorems and their Implications

This paper has a two-fold purpose. First, by considering a reformulation of a deep theorem of Göllnitz, we obtain a new weighted partition identity involving the Rogers-Ramanujan partitions, namely, partitions into parts differing by at least two. Consequences of this include Jacobi's celebrated triple product identity for theta functions, Sylvester's famous refinement of Euler's theorem, as well as certain weighted partition identities. Next, by studying partitions with prescribed bounds on successive ranks and replacing these with weighted Rogers-Ramanujan partitions, we obtain two new sets of theorems - a set of three theorems involving partitions into parts $\not\equiv 0, \pm i$ ($mod$ 6), and a set of three theorems involving partitions into parts $\not\equiv 0, \pm i$ ($mod$ 7), $i=1,2,3$.
A double bounded key identity for Goellnitz's (big) partition theorem

Given integers i,j,k,L,M, we establish a new double bounded q-series identity from which the three parameter (i,j,k) key identity of Alladi-Andrews-Gordon for Goellnitz's (big) theorem follows if L, M tend to infinity. When L = M, the identity yields a strong refinement of Goellnitz's theorem with a bound on the parts given by L. This is the first time a bounded version of Goellnitz's (big) theorem has been proved. This leads to new bounded versions of Jacobi's triple product identity for theta functions and other fundamental identities.

This is a tutorial for using a new q-series Maple package. The package includes facilities for conversion between q-series and q-products and finding algebraic relations between q-series. Andrews found an algorithm for converting a q-series into a product. We provide an implementation. As an application we are able to effectively find finite q-product factorisations when they exist thus answering a question of Andrews. We provide other applications involving factorisations into theta functions and eta products.
The algebra of flows in graphs

We define a contravariant functor K from the category of finite graphs and graph morphisms to the category of finitely generated graded abelian groups and homomorphisms. For a graph X, an abelian group B, and a nonnegative integer j, an element of Hom(K^j(X),B) is a coherent family of B-valued flows on the set of all graphs obtained by contracting some (j-1)-set of edges of X; in particular, Hom(K^1(X),R) is the familiar (real) ``cycle-space'' of X. We show that K(X) is torsion-free and that its Poincare polynomial is the specialization t^{n-k}T_X(1/t,1+t) of the Tutte polynomial of X (here X has n vertices and k components). Functoriality of K induces a functorial coalgebra structure on K(X); dualizing, for any ring B we obtain a functorial B-algebra structure on Hom(K(X),B). When B is commutative we present this algebra as a quotient of a divided power algebra, leading to some interesting inequalities on the coefficients of the above Poincare polynomial. We also provide a formula for the theta function of the lattice of integer-valued flows in X, and conclude with ten open problems.
