Let $\mathcal{F}$ be a family of graphs. A graph $G$ is called \textit{$\mathcal{F}$-free} if for any $F\in \mathcal{F}$, there is no subgraph of $G$ isomorphic to $F$. Given a graph $T$ and a family of graphs $\mathcal{F}$, the generalized Turán number of $\mathcal{F}$ is the maximum number of copies of $T$ in an $\mathcal{F}$-free graph on $n$ vertices, denoted by $ex(n,T,\mathcal{F})$. A linear forest is a graph whose connected components are all paths or isolated vertices. Let $\mathcal{L}_{n,k}$ be the family of all linear forests of order $n$ with $k$ edges and $K^*_{s,t}$ a graph obtained from $K_{s,t}$ by substituting the part of size $s$ with a clique of the same size. In this paper, we determine the exact values of $ex(n,K_s,\mathcal{L}_{n,k})$ and $ex(n,K^*_{s,t},\mathcal{L}_{n,k})$. Also, we study the case of this problem when the \textit{"host graph"} is bipartite. Denote by $ex_{bip}(n,T,\mathcal{F})$ the maximum possible number of copies of $T$ in an $\mathcal{F}$-free bipartite graph with each part of size $n$. We determine the exact value of $ex_{bip}(n,K_{s,t},\mathcal{L}_{n,k})$. Our proof is mainly based on the shifting method.
Rainbow cycles vs. rainbow paths
An edge-colored graph $F$ is {\it rainbow} if each edge of $F$ has a unique color. The {\it rainbow Turán number} $\mathrm{ex}^*(n,F)$ of a graph $F$ is the maximum possible number of edges in a properly edge-colored $n$-vertex graph with no rainbow copy of $F$. The study of rainbow Turán numbers was introduced by Keevash, Mubayi, Sudakov, and Verstraëte. Johnson and Rombach introduced the following rainbow-version of generalized Turán problems: for fixed graphs $H$ and $F$, let $\mathrm{ex}^*(n,H,F)$ denote the maximum number of rainbow copies of $H$ in an $n$-vertex properly edge-colored graph with no rainbow copy of $F$.
In this paper we investigate the case $\mathrm{ex}^*(n,C_\ell,P_\ell)$ and give a general upper bound as well as exact results for $\ell = 3,4,5$. Along the way we establish a new best upper bound on $\mathrm{ex}^*(n,P_5)$. Our main motivation comes from an attempt to improve bounds on $\mathrm{ex}^*(n,P_\ell)$, which has been the subject of several recent manuscripts.

The edge blow-up of a graph $F$ is the graph obtained from replacing each edge in $F$ by a clique of the same size where the new vertices of the cliques are all different. In this article, we concern about the Turán problem for the edge blow-up of trees. Erdős et al. (1995) and Chen et al. (2003) solved the problem for stars. The problem for paths was resolved by Glebov (2011). Liu (2013) extended the above results to cycles and a special family of trees with the minimum degree at most two in the smaller color class (paths and proper subdivisions of stars were included in the family). In this article, we extend Liu's result to all the trees with the minimum degree at least two in the smaller color class. Combining with Liu's result, except one particular case, the Turán problem for the edge blow-up of trees is completely resolved. Moreover, we determine the maximum number of edges in the family of $\{K_{1,k}, kK_2, 2K_{1,k-1}\}$-free graphs and the extremal graphs, which is an extension of a result given by Abbott et al. (1972).
Counting multiple graphs in generalized Turán problems
We are given graphs $H_1,\dots,H_k$ and $F$. Consider an $F$-free graph $G$ on $n$ vertices. What is the largest sum of the number of copies of $H_i$? The case $k=1$ has attracted a lot of attention.
We also consider a colored variant, where the edges of $G$ are colored with $k$ colors. What is the largest sum of the number of copies of $H_i$ in color $i$? Our motivation to study this colored variant is a recent result stating that the Turán number of the $r$-uniform Berge-$F$ hypergraphs is at most the quantity defined above for $k=2$, $H_1=K_r$ and $H_2=K_2$.
In addition to studying these new questions, we obtain new results for generalized Turán problems and also for Berge hypergraphs.
Random Turán theorem for hypergraph cycles
Given $r$-uniform hypergraphs $G$ and $H$ the Turán number $\rm ex(G, H)$ is the maximum number of edges in an $H$-free subgraph of $G$. We study the typical value of $\rm ex(G, H)$ when $G=G_{n,p}^{(r)}$, the Erdős-Rényi random $r$-uniform hypergraph, and $H=C_{2\ell}^{(r)}$, the $r$-uniform linear cycle of length $2\ell$. The case of graphs ($r=2$) is a longstanding open problem that has been investigated by many researchers. We determine $\rm ex(G_{n,p}^{(r)}, C_{2\ell}^{(r)})$ up to polylogarithmic factors for all but a small interval of values of $p=p(n)$ whose length decreases as $\ell$ grows.
Our main technical contribution is a balanced supersaturation result for linear even cycles which improves upon previous such results by Ferber-Mckinley-Samotij and Balogh-Narayanan-Skokan. The novelty is that the supersaturation result depends on the codegree of some pairs of vertices in the underlying hypergraph. This approach could be used to prove similar results for other hypergraphs $H$.

The planar Turán number of a given graph $H$, denoted by $ex_{\mathcal{P}}(n,H)$, is the maximum number of edges over all planar graphs on $n$ vertices that do not contain a copy of $H$ as a subgraph. Let $H_k$ be a friendship graph, which is obtained from $k$ triangles by sharing a common vertex. In this paper, we obtain sharp bounds of $ex_{\mathcal{P}}(n,H_k)$ and $ex_{\mathcal{P}}(n,K_1+P_{k+1})$ for $k\ge2$, which improves the results of Lan and Shi in Electron. J. Combin. 26 (2) (2019), \#P2.11.
Inverse Turán numbers
For given graphs $G$ and $F$, the Turán number $ex(G,F)$ is defined to be the maximum number of edges in an $F$-free subgraph of $G$. Foucaud, Krivelevich and Perarnau and later independently Briggs and Cox introduced a dual version of this problem wherein for a given number $k$, one maximizes the number of edges in a host graph $G$ for which $ex(G,H) < k$.
Addressing a problem of Briggs and Cox, we determine the asymptotic value of the inverse Turán number of the paths of length $4$ and $5$ and provide an improved lower bound for all paths of even length. Moreover, we obtain bounds on the inverse Turán number of even cycles giving improved bounds on the leading coefficient in the case of $C_4$. Finally, we give multiple conjectures concerning the asymptotic value of the inverse Turán number of $C_4$ and $P_{\ell}$, suggesting that in the latter problem the asymptotic behavior depends heavily on the parity of $\ell$.

We show that for every rational number $r \in (1,2)$ of the form $2 - a/b$, where $a, b \in \mathbb{N}^+$ satisfy $\lfloor b/a \rfloor^3 \le a \le b / (\lfloor b/a \rfloor +1) + 1$, there exists a graph $F_r$ such that the Turán number $\operatorname{ex}(n, F_r) = Θ(n^r)$. Our result in particular generates infinitely many new Turán exponents. As a byproduct, we formulate a framework that is taking shape in recent work on the Bukh--Conlon conjecture.

For graphs $H$ and $F$, the generalized Turán number $ex(n,H,F)$ is the largest number of copies of $H$ in an $F$-free graph on $n$ vertices. We consider this problem when both $H$ and $F$ have at most four vertices. We give sharp results in almost all cases, and connect the remaining cases to well-known unsolved problems. Our main new contribution is applying the progressive induction method of Simonovits for generalized Turán problems.

Let $\mathcal{H}$ be an $r$-uniform hypergraph. The Turán number $\text{ex}(n,\mathcal{H})$ is the maximum number of edges in an $n$-vertex $\mathcal{H}$-free $r$-uniform hypergraph. The Turán density of $\mathcal{H}$ is defined by \[π(\mathcal{H})=\lim_{n\rightarrow\infty}\frac{\text{ex}(n,\mathcal{H})}{\binom{n}{r}}.\] In this paper, we consider the Turán density of projective geometries. We give two new constructions of $PG_{m}(q)$-free hypergraphs which improve some results given by Keevash (J. Combin. Theory Ser. A, 111: 289--309, 2005). Based on an upper bound of blocking sets of $PG_m(q)$, we give a new general lower bound for the Turán density of $PG_{m}(q)$. By a detailed analysis of the structures of complete arcs in $PG_2(q)$, we also get better lower bounds for the Turán density of $PG_2(q)$ with $q=3,\ 4,\ 5,\ 7,\ 8$.

A well-known result of Verstraëte \cite{V00} shows that for each integer $k\geq 2$ every graph $G$ with average degree at least $8k$ contains cycles of $k$ consecutive even lengths, the shortest of which is at most twice the radius of $G$. We establish two extensions of Verstraëte's result for linear cycles in linear $r$-uniform hypergraphs.
We show that for any fixed integers $r\geq 3,k\geq 2$, there exist constants $c_1=c_1(r)$ and $c_2=c_2(r,k)$, such that every linear $r$-uniform hypergraph $G$ with average degree $d(G)\geq c_1 k$ contains linear cycles of $k$ consecutive even lengths, the shortest of which is at most $2\lceil \frac{ \log n}{\log (d(G)/k)-c_2}\rceil$. In particular, as an immediate corollary, we retrieve the current best known upper bound on the linear Turán number of $C^r_{2k}$ with improved coefficients.
Furthermore, we show that for any fixed integers $r\geq 3,k\geq 2$, there exist constants $c_3=c_3(r)$ and $c_4=c_4(r)$ such that every $n$-vertex linear $r$-uniform graph with average degree $d(G)\geq c_3k$, contains linear cycles of $k$ consecutive lengths, the shortest of which has length at most $6\lceil \frac{\log n}{\log (d(G)/k)-c_4} \rceil +6$. Both the degree condition and the shortest length among the cycles guaranteed are best possible up to a constant factor.

The $r$-blowup of a graph $F$, denoted by $F[r]$, is the graph obtained by replacing the vertices and edges of $F$ with independent sets of size $r$ and copies of $K_{r,r}$, respectively. For bipartite graphs $F$, very little is known about the order of magnitude of the Turán number of $F[r]$. In this paper we prove that $\mathrm{ex}(n,C_6[2])=O(n^{5/3})$ and, more generally, for any positive integer $t$, $\mathrm{ex}(n,θ_{3,t}[2])=O(n^{5/3})$. This is tight when $t$ is sufficiently large.

The Turán number of a graph $H$, $\text{ex}(n,H)$, is the maximum number of edges in a graph on $n$ vertices which does not have $H$ as a subgraph. A wheel $W_n$ is an $n$-vertex graph formed by connecting a single vertex to all vertices of a cycle $C_{n-1}$. Let $mW_{2k+1}$ denote the $m$ vertex-disjoint copies of $W_{2k+1}$. For sufficiently large $n$, we determine the Turán number and all extremal graphs for $mW_{2k+1}$. We also provide the Turán number and all extremal graphs for $W^{h}:=\bigcup\limits^m_{i=1}W_{k_i}$ when $n$ is sufficiently large, where the number of even wheels is $h$ and $h>0$.

Let $\mathcal{F}$ be a nonempty family of graphs. A graph $G$ is called $\mathcal{F}$-\textit{free} if it contains no graph from $\mathcal{F}$ as a subgraph. For a positive integer $n$, the \emph{planar Turán number} of $\F$, denoted by $\ex_{\p}(n,\F)$, is the maximum number of edges in an $n$-vertex $\F$-free planar graph.
Let $Θ_k$ be the family of Theta graphs on $k\geq 4$ vertices, that is, graphs obtained by joining a pair of non-consecutive vertices of a $k$-cycle with an edge. Lan, Shi and Song determined an upper bound $\text{ex}_{\mathcal{P}}(n,Θ_6)\leq \frac{18}{7}n-\frac{36}{7}$, but for large $n$, they did not verify that the bound is sharp. In this paper, we improve their bound by proving $\text{ex}_{\mathcal{P}}(n,Θ_6)\leq \frac{18}{7}n-\frac{48}{7}$ and then we demonstrate the existence of infinitely many positive integer $n$ and an $n$-vertex $Θ_6$-free planar graph attaining the bound.

The rainbow Turán number $\mathrm{ex}^*(n,H)$ of a graph $H$ is the maximum possible number of edges in a properly edge-coloured $n$-vertex graph with no rainbow subgraph isomorphic to $H$. We prove that for any integer $k\geq 2$, $\mathrm{ex}^*(n,C_{2k})=O(n^{1+1/k})$. This is tight and establishes a conjecture of Keevash, Mubayi, Sudakov and Verstraëte. We use the same method to prove several other conjectures in various topics. First, we prove that there exists a constant $c$ such that any properly edge-coloured $n$-vertex graph with more than $cn(\log n)^4$ edges contains a rainbow cycle. It is known that there exist properly edge-coloured $n$-vertex graphs with $Ω(n\log n)$ edges which do not contain any rainbow cycle. Secondly, we show that in any proper edge-colouring of $K_n$ with $o(n^{\frac{r}{r-1}\cdot \frac{k-1}{k}})$ colours, there exist $r$ colour-isomorphic, pairwise vertex-disjoint copies of $C_{2k}$. This proves in a strong form a conjecture of Conlon and Tyomkyn, and a strenghtened version proposed by Xu, Zhang, Jing and Ge. Moreover, we answer a question of Jiang and Newman by showing that there exists a constant $c=c(r)$ such that any $n$-vertex graph with more than $cn^{2-1/r}(\log n)^{7/r}$ edges contains the $r$-blowup of an even cycle. Finally, we prove that the $r$-blowup of $C_{2k}$ has Turán number $O(n^{2-\frac{1}{r}+\frac{1}{k+r-1}+o(1)})$, which can be used to disprove an old conjecture of Erd\H os and Simonovits.
The exact linear Turán number of the Sail

A hypergraph is linear if any two of its edges intersect in at most one vertex. The Sail (or $3$-fan) $F^3$ is the $3$-uniform linear hypergraph consisting of $3$ edges $f_1, f_2, f_3$ pairwise intersecting in the same vertex $v$ and an additional edge $g$ intersecting all $f_i$ in a vertex different from $v$. The linear Turán number $ex_{lin}(n, F^3)$ is the maximum number of edges in a $3$-uniform linear hypergraph on $n$ vertices that does not contain a copy of $F^3$.
Füredi and Gyárfás proved that if $n = 3k$, then $ex_{lin}(n, F^3) = k^2$ and the only extremal hypergraphs in this case are transversal designs. They also showed that if $n = 3k+2$, then $ex_{lin}(n, F^3) = k^2+k$, and the only extremal hypergraphs are truncated designs (which are obtained from a transversal design on $3k+3$ vertices with $3$ groups by removing one vertex and all the hyperedges containing it) along with three other small hypergraphs. However, the case when $n =3k+1$ was left open.
In this paper, we solve this remaining case by proving that $ex_{lin}(n, F^3) = k^2+1$ if $n = 3k+1$, answering a question of Füredi and Gyárfás. We also characterize all the extremal hypergraphs. The difficulty of this case is due to the fact that these extremal examples are rather non-standard. In particular, they are not derived from transversal designs like in the other cases.

Let ${\rm ex}_{\mathcal{P}}(n,T,H)$ denote the maximum number of copies of $T$ in an $n$-vertex planar graph which does not contain $H$ as a subgraph. When $T=K_2$, ${\rm ex}_{\mathcal{P}}(n,T,H)$ is the well studied function, the planar Turán number of $H$, denoted by ${\rm ex}_{\mathcal{P}}(n,H)$. The topic of extremal planar graphs was initiated by Dowden (2016). He obtained sharp upper bound for both ${\rm ex}_{\mathcal{P}}(n,C_4)$ and ${\rm ex}_{\mathcal{P}}(n,C_5)$. Later on, Y. Lan, et al. continued this topic and proved that ${\rm ex}_{\mathcal{P}}(n,C_6)\leq \frac{18(n-2)}{7}$. In this paper, we give a sharp upper bound ${\rm ex}_{\mathcal{P}}(n,C_6) \leq \frac{5}{2}n-7$, for all $n\geq 18$, which improves Lan's result. We also pose a conjecture on ${\rm ex}_{\mathcal{P}}(n,C_k)$, for $k\geq 7$.

Given graphs $T$ and $H$, the generalized Turán number ex$(n,T,H)$ is the maximum number of copies of $T$ in an $n$-vertex graph with no copies of $H$. Alon and Shikhelman, using a result of Erd\H os, determined the asymptotics of ex$(n,K_3,H)$ when the chromatic number of $H$ is greater than 3 and proved several results when $H$ is bipartite. We consider this problem when $H$ has chromatic number 3. Even this special case for the following relatively simple 3-chromatic graphs appears to be challenging.
The suspension $\widehat H$ of a graph $H$ is the graph obtained from $H$ by adding a new vertex adjacent to all vertices of $H$. We give new upper and lower bounds on ex$(n,K_3,\widehat{H})$ when $H$ is a path, even cycle, or complete bipartite graph. One of the main tools we use is the triangle removal lemma, but it is unclear if much stronger statements can be proved without using the removal lemma.

We prove a uniform bound on the topological Turán number of an arbitrary two-dimensional simplicial complex $S$: any $n$-vertex two-dimensional complex with at least $C_S n^{3-1/5}$ facets contains a homeomorphic copy of $S$, where $C_S > 0$ is an absolute constant depending on $S$ alone. This result, a two-dimensional analogue of a classical result of Mader for one-dimensional complexes, sheds some light on an old problem of Linial from 2006.
