We give equivalent and sufficient criteria for the automorphism group of a complete toric variety, respectively a Gorenstein toric Fano variety, to be reductive. In particular we show that the automorphism group of a Gorenstein toric Fano variety is reductive, if the barycenter of the associated reflexive polytope is zero. Furthermore a sharp bound on the dimension of the reductive automorphism group of a complete toric variety is proven by studying the set of Demazure roots.

We derive explicit Pieri-type multiplication formulas in the Grothendieck ring of a flag variety. These expand the product of an arbitrary Schubert class and a special Schubert class in the basis of Schubert classes. These special Schubert classes are indexed by a cycle which has either the form (k-p+1,k-p+2,...,k+1) or the form (k+p,k+p-1,...,k), and are pulled back from a Grassmannian projection. Our formulas are in terms of certain labeled chains in the k-Bruhat order on the symmetric group and are combinatorial in that they involve no cancellations. We also show that the multiplicities in the Pieri formula are naturally certain binomial coefficients.
Catalan numbers and Schubert polynomials for $w=1(n+1)... 2$
We show that the Schubert polynomial S_w specializes to the Catalan number C_n when $w=1(n+1)...2$. Several proofs of this result as well as a q-analog are given. An application to the singularities of Schubert varieties is given.

We study subvarieties of the flag variety called Hessenberg varieties, defined by certain linear conditions. These subvarieties arise naturally in applications including geometric representation theory, number theory, and numerical analysis. We describe completely the homology of Hessenberg varieties over GL_n(C) and show that they have no odd-dimensional homology. We provide an explicit geometric construction which partitions each Hessenberg variety into pieces homeomorphic to affine space. We characterize these affine pieces by fillings of Young tableaux and show that the dimension of the affine piece can be computed by combinatorial rules generalizing the Eulerian numbers. We give an equivalent formulation of this result in terms of roots. We conclude with a section on open questions.

The toric residue is a map depending on n+1 semi-ample divisors on a complete toric variety of dimension n. It appears in a variety of contexts such as sparse polynomial systems, mirror symmetry, and GKZ hypergeometric functions. In this paper we investigate the problem of finding an explicit element whose toric residue is equal to one. Such an element is shown to exist if and only if the associated polytopes are essential. We reduce the problem to finding a collection of partitions of the lattice points in the polytopes satisfying a certain combinatorial property. We use this description to solve the problem when n=2 and for any n when the polytopes of the divisors share a complete flag of faces. The latter generalizes earlier results when the divisors were all ample.

We study the positive Bergman complex B+(M) of an oriented matroid M, which is a certain subcomplex of the Bergman complex B(M) of the underlying unoriented matroid. The positive Bergman complex is defined so that given a linear ideal I with associated oriented matroid M_I, the positive tropical variety associated to I is equal to the fan over B+(M_I). Our main result is that a certain "fine" subdivision of B+(M) is a geometric realization of the order complex of the proper part of the Las Vergnas face lattice of M. It follows that B+(M) is homeomorphic to a sphere. For the oriented matroid of the complete graph K_n, we show that the face poset of the "coarse" subdivision of B+(K_n) is dual to the face poset of the associahedron A_{n-2}, and we give a formula for the number of fine cells within a coarse cell.

We consider a multivariate generating function F(z), whose coefficients are indexed by d-tuples of nonnegative integers: F(z) = sum_r a_r z^r where z^r denotes the product of z_j^{r_j} over j = 1, ..., d. Suppose that F(z) is meromorphic in some neighborhood of the origin in complex d-space. Let V be the set where the denominator of F vanishes. Effective asymptotic expansions for the coefficients can be obtained by complex contour integration near points of V.
In the first article in this series, we treated the case of smooth points of V. In this article we deal with multiple points of V. Our results show that the central limit (Ornstein-Zernike) behavior typical of the smooth case does not hold in the multiple point case. For example, when V has a multiple point singularity at the point (1, ..., 1), rather than a_r decaying on the order of |r|^{-1/2} as |r| goes to infinity, a_r is a polynomial plus a rapidly decaying term.

We investigate Gorenstein toric Fano varieties by combinatorial methods using the notion of a reflexive polytope which appeared in connection to mirror symmetry. The paper contains generalisations of tools and previously known results for nonsingular toric Fano varieties. As applications we obtain new classification results, bounds of invariants and formulate conjectures concerning combinatorial and geometrical properties of reflexive polytopes.

Using a combinatorial approach which avoids geometry, this paper studies the ring structure of K_T(G/B), the T-equivariant K-theory of the (generalized) flag variety G/B. Here the data is a complex reductive algebraic group (or symmetrizable Kac-Moody group) G, a Borel subgroup B, and a maximal torus T, and K_T(G/B) is the Grothendieck group of T-equivariant coherent sheaves on G/B. We prove "Pieri-Chevalley" formulas for the products of a Schubert class by a homogeneous line bundle (dominant or anti-dominant) and for products of a Schubert class by a codimension 1 Schubert class. All of these Pieri-Chevalley formulas are given in terms of the combinatorics of the Littelmann path model. We give explicit computations of products of Schubert classes for the rank two cases and this data allows us to make a "positivity conjecture" generalizing the theorems of Brion and Graham, which treat the cases K(G/B) and H_T^*(G/B), respectively.
A regularity result for a locus of Brill type
Let n,d be positive integers, with d even (say d=2e). Let X_(n,d) denote the locus of degree d hypersurfaces in P^n which consist of two e-fold hyperplanes. We bound the regularity of the ideal of this variety. Moreover, we show that this variety is r-normal for r at least 2. The proof of the latter part is is a result of a tripartite collaboration of algebraic geometry, classical invariant theory and theoretical physics. It is executed by reducing the question to a combinatorial calculation involving Feynman diagrams and hypergeometric functions.
The line geometry of resonance varieties
Let R^1(A,R) be the degree-one resonance variety over a field R of a hyperplane arrangement A. We give a geometric description of R^1(A,R) in terms of projective line complexes. The projective image of R^1(A,R) is a union of ruled varieties, parametrized by neighborly partitions of subarrangements of A. The underlying line complexes are intersections of special Schubert varieties, easily described in terms of the corresponding partition. We generalize the definition and decomposition of R^1(A,R) to arbitrary commutative rings, and point out the anomalies that arise. In general the decomposition is parametrized by neighborly graphs, which need not induce neighborly partitions of subarrangements of A.
We use this approach to show that the resonance variety of the Hessian arrangement over a field of characteristic three has a nonlinear component, a cubic threefold with interesting line structure. This answers a question of A. Suciu. We show that Suciu's deleted B_3 arrangement has resonance components over Z_2 that intersect nontrivially. We also exhibit resonant weights over Z_4 supported on the deleted B_3, which has no neighborly partitions. The modular resonant weights on the deleted B_3 exponentiate to points on the complex torus which lie on, and determine, the translated 1-torus in the first characteristic variety.

In this paper, we investigate tropical secant varieties of ordinary linear spaces. These correspond to the log-limit sets of ordinary toric varieties; we show that their interesting parts are combinatorially isomorphic to a certain natural subcomplex of the complex of regular subdivisions of a corresponding point set, and we display the range of behavior of this object. We also use this characterization to reformulate the question of determining Barvinok rank into a question regarding regular subdivisions of products of simplices.

The set of all m-tuples of compatible full conditional distributions on discrete random variables is an algebraic set whose defining ideal is a unimodular toric ideal. We identify the defining polynomials of these ideals with closed walks on a bipartite graph. Our algebraic characterization provides a natural generalization of the requirement that compatible conditionals have identical odds ratios and holds regardless of the patterns of zeros in the conditional arrays.

In this paper we derive geometric consequences from the presence of a long strand of linear syzygies in the minimal free resolution of a closed scheme in projective space whose homogeneous ideal is generated by quadrics. These consequences are given in terms of intersections with arbitrary linear subspaces. We use our results to bound homological invariants of some well-known projective varieties, to give a combinatorial characterization of quadratic monomial ideals with a long strand of linear syzygies, etc
Small schemes and varieties of minimal degree

We prove that if X is any 2-regular projective scheme (in the sense of Castelnuovo-Mumford) then X is "small". This means that if L is a linear space and Y:= L\cap X is finite, then Y is "linearly independent" in the sense that the dimension of the linear span of Y is 1+deg Y. The converse is true and well-known for finite schemes, but false in general. The main result of this paper is that the converse, "small implies 2-regular", is also true for reduced projective schemes (algebraic sets). This is proven by means of a delicate geometric analysis, leading to a complete classification: we show that the components of a small algebraic set are varieties of minimal degree, meeting in a particularly simple way. From the classification one can show that if X is 2-regular, then so is X_{red}, and so also is the projection of X from any point of X.
Our results extend the Del Pezzo-Bertini classification of varieties of minimal degree, the characterization of these as the varieties of regularity 2 by Eisenbud-Goto, and the construction of 2-regular square-free monomial ideals by Fröberg.
A tropical morphism related to the hyperplane arrangement of the complete bipartite graph
We undertake a combinatorial study of the piecewise linear map g : R^{2m+2n} --> R^{mn} which assigns to the four vectors a, A in R^m and b, B in R^n the m by n matrix given by g_{ij} = min (a_i + b_j, A_i+B_j). This map arises naturally in Pachter and Sturmfels's work on the tropical geometry of statistical models. The image of g has been a subject of recent interest; it is the positive part of the tropical algebraic variety which parameterizes n-tuples of points on a tropical line in m-space.
The domains of linearity of g are the regions of the real hyperplane arrangement A_{m,n}, corresponding to the complete bipartite graph K_{m,n}. We explain how the images of (some of) the regions provide two polyhedral subdivisions of the image of g, one of which is a refinement of the other. The finer subdivision is particularly nice enumeratively: it has 2 {m \choose 2} {n \choose 2} r_{m-2,n-2} maximum-dimensional cells, where r_{m-2,n-2} is the number of regions of the arrangement A_{m-2,n-2}.

We give a simple necessary and sufficient condition for a Schubert variety $X_w$ to be smooth when $w$ is a freely braided element of a simply laced Weyl group; such elements were introduced by the authors in a previous work (math.CO/0301104). This generalizes in one direction a result of Fan concerning varieties indexed by short-braid avoiding elements. We also derive generating functions for the freely braided elements that index smooth Schubert varieties. All results are stated and proved only for the simply laced case.

K. Ding studied a class of Schubert varieties X_λin type A partial flag manifolds, corresponding to integer partitions λand in bijection with dominant permutations. He observed that the Schubert cell structure of X_λis indexed by maximal rook placements on the Ferrers board B_λ, and that the integral cohomology groups H^*(X_λ; Zz), H^*(X_μ; Zz) are additively isomorphic exactly when the Ferrers boards B_λ, B_μsatisfy the combinatorial condition of rook-equivalence.
We classify the varieties X_λup to isomorphism, distinguishing them by their graded cohomology rings with integer coefficients. The crux of our approach is studying the nilpotence orders of linear forms in the cohomology ring.
Computational Topology of Equivariant Maps from Spheres to Complements of Arrangements
We use a well known problem in discrete and computational geometry (partitions of measures by $k$-fans) as a motivation and as a point of departure to illustrate many aspects, both theoretical and computational, of the problem of calculating the obstructions for the existence of equivariant maps. A variety of techniques are introduced and discussed with the emphasis on concrete and explicit calculations. This eventually leads (Theorems 18 and 19) to an almost exhaustive analysis of when such maps do or do not exist in the particular case of interest.
A Unified Approach to Combinatorial Formulas for Schubert Polynomials

Schubert polynomials were introduced in the context of the geometry of flag varieties. This paper investigates some of the connections not yet understood between several combinatorial structures for the construction of Schubert polynomials; we also present simplifications in some of the existing approaches to this area. We designate certain line diagrams known as rc-graphs as the main structure. The other structures in the literature we study include: semistandard Young tableaux, Kohnert diagrams, and balanced labelings of the diagram of a permutation. The main tools in our investigation are certain operations on rc-graphs, which correspond to the coplactic operations on tableaux, and thus define a crystal graph structure on rc-graphs; a new definition of these operations is presented. One application of these operations is a straightforward, purely combinatorial proof of a recent formula (due to Buch, Kresch, Tamvakis, and Yong), which expresses Schubert polynomials in terms of products of Schur polynomials. In spite of the fact that it refers to many objects and results related to them, the paper is mostly self-contained.
