Let A be an ample line bundle on a projective toric variety X of dimension n. We show that if l>=n-1+p, then A^l satisfies the property N_p. Applying similar methods, we obtain a combinatorial theorem: For a given lattice polytope P we give a criterion for an integer m to guarantee that mP is normal.

We propose a new approach to the multiplication of Schubert classes in the K-theory of the flag variety. This extends the work of Fomin and Kirillov in the cohomology case, and is based on the quadratic algebra defined by them. More precisely, we define K-theoretic versions of the Dunkl elements considered by Fomin and Kirillov, show that they commute, and use them to describe the structure constants of the K-theory of the flag variety with respect to its basis of Schubert classes.

We present a self-contained combinatorial approach to Fujita's conjectures in the toric case. Our main new result is a generalization of Fujita's very ampleness conjecture for toric varieties with arbitrary singularities. In an appendix, we use similar methods to give a new proof of an analogous toric generalization of Fujita's freeness conjecture due to Fujino.

The paper establishes a formula for enumeration of curves of arbitrary genus in toric surfaces. It turns out that such curves can be counted by means of certain lattice paths in the Newton polygon. The formula was announced earlier in http://arxiv.org/abs/math.AG/0209253.
The result is established with the help of the so-called tropical algebraic geometry. This geometry allows one to replace complex toric varieties with the Euclidean n-space and holomorphic curves with certain piecewise-linear graphs there.

We consider two partial orders on standard Young tableaux. The first one is induced from the weak right Bruhat order on symmetric group by Robinson-Schensted algorithm. The second one is induced from the order on Young diagrams by considering a Young tableau as a chain of Young diagrams. We show that these two orders of completely different nature coincide on the subset of Young tableaux with 2 columns or with 2 rows. This fact has very interesting geometric implications for orbital varieties of nilpotent order 2 in sl(n).
The tropical totally positive Grassmannian

Tropical algebraic geometry is the geometry of the tropical semiring (R, min, +). The theory of total positivity is a natural generalization of the study of matrices with all minors positive. In this paper we introduce the totally positive part of the tropicalization of an arbitrary affine variety, an object which has the structure of a polyhedral fan. We then investigate the case of the Grassmannian, denoting the resulting fan \Trop^+ Gr_{k,n}. We show that \Trop^+ Gr_{2,n} is the Stanley-Pitman fan, which is combinatorially the fan dual to the (type A_{n-3}) associahedron, and that \Trop^+ Gr_{3,6} and \Trop^+ Gr_{3,7} are closely related to the fans dual to the types D_4 and E_6 associahedra. These results are reminiscent of the results of Fomin and Zelevinsky, and Scott, who showed that the Grassmannian has a natural cluster algebra structure which is of types A_{n-3}, D_4, and E_6 for Gr_{2,n}, Gr_{3,6}, and Gr_{3,7}. We suggest a general conjecture about the positive part of the tropicalization of a cluster algebra.
Tropical Halfspaces

As a new concept tropical halfspaces are introduced to the (linear algebraic) geometry of the tropical semiring (R,min,+). This yields exterior descriptions of the tropical polytopes that were recently studied by Develin and Sturmfels in a variety of contexts. The key tool to the understanding is a newly defined sign of the tropical determinant, which shares remarkably many properties with the ordinary sign of the determinant of a matrix. The methods are used to obtain an optimal tropical convex hull algorithm in two dimensions.

For a semisimple Lie algebra g the orbit method attempts to assign representations of g to (coadjoint) orbits in g*. Orbital varieties are particular Lagrangian subvarieties of such orbits leading to highest weight representations of g. In sl(n) orbital varieties are described by Young tableaux. Inclusion relation on orbital variety closures defines a partial order on Young tableaux. Our aim is to describe this order. The paper is devoted to the combinatorial description of induced Duflo order on Young tableaux (the order generated by inclusion of generating subspaces of orbital varieties). This is a very interesting and complex combinatorial question. This is the first paper in the series. In Part II and Part III we use repeatedly the results of the paper as a basis for further study of orbital variety closures.

In this paper we consider so called Richardson orbital varieties in sl(n). A Richardson orbital variety is an orbital variety whose closure is a standard nilradical. We show that in sl(n) a Richardson orbital variety closure is a union of orbital varieties. We give a complete combinatorial description of such closures in terms of Young tableaux.
This is the second paper in the series of three papers devoted to a combinatorial description of orbital variety closures in sl(n) in terms of Young tableaux.
A Combinatorial Formula for the Character of the Diagonal Coinvariants

Let R_n be the ring of coinvariants for the diagonal action of the symmetric group S_n. It is known that the character of R_n as a doubly-graded S_n module can be expressed using the Frobenius characteristic map as \nabla e_n, where e_n is the n-th elementary symmetric function, and \nabla is an operator from the theory of Macdonald polynomials.
We conjecture a combinatorial formula for \nabla e_n and prove that it has many desirable properties which support our conjecture. In particular, we prove that our formula is a symmetric function (which is not obvious) and that it is Schur positive. These results make use of the theory of ribbon tableau generating functions of Lascoux, Leclerc and Thibon. We also show that a variety of earlier conjectures and theorems on \nabla e_n are special cases of our conjecture.
Finally, we extend our conjectures on \nabla e_n and several of the results supporting them to higher powers \nabla^m e_n.
A common recursion for Laplacians of matroids and shifted simplicial complexes

A recursion due to Kook expresses the Laplacian eigenvalues of a matroid M in terms of the eigenvalues of its deletion M-e and contraction M/e by a fixed element e, and an error term. We show that this error term is given simply by the Laplacian eigenvalues of the pair (M-e, M/e). We further show that by suitably generalizing deletion and contraction to arbitrary simplicial complexes, the Laplacian eigenvalues of shifted simplicial complexes satisfy this exact same recursion.
We show that the class of simplicial complexes satisfying this recursion is closed under a wide variety of natural operations, and that several specializations of this recursion reduce to basic recursions for natural invariants.
We also find a simple formula for the Laplacian eigenvalues of an arbitrary pair of shifted complexes in terms of a kind of generalized degree sequence.

We extend the methods developed in our earlier work to algorithmically compute the intersection cohomology Betti numbers of reductive varieties. These form a class of highly symmetric varieties that includes equivariant compactifications of reductive groups. Thereby, we extend a well-known algorithm for toric varieties.
Noncommutative algebras related with Schubert calculus on Coxeter groups

For any finite Coxeter system $(W,S)$ we construct a certain noncommutative algebra, so-called {\it bracket algebra}, together with a familiy of commuting elements, so-called {\it Dunkl elements.} Dunkl elements conjecturally generate an algebra which is canonically isomorphic to the coinvariant algebra of the group $W.$ We prove this conjecture for classical Coxeter groups and $I_2(m)$. We define a ``quantization'' and a multiparameter deformation of our construction and show that for Lie groups of classical type and $G_2,$ the algebra generated by Dunkl elements in the quantized bracket algebra is canonically isomorphic to the small quantum cohomology ring of the corresponding flag variety, as described by B. Kim. For crystallographic Coxeter systems we define {\it quantum Bruhat representation} of the corresponding bracket algebra. We study in more detail relations and structure of $B_n$-, $D_n$- and $G_2$-bracket algebras, and as an application, discover {\it Pieri type formula} in the $B_n$-bracket algebra. As a corollary, we obtain Pieri type formula for multiplication of arbitrary $B_n$-Schubert classes by some special ones. Our Pieri type formula is a generalization of Pieri's formulas obtained by A. Lascoux and M.-P. Schützenberger for flag varieties of type $A.$ We also introduce a super-version of the bracket algebra together with a family of pairwise anticommutative elements which describes ``noncommutative differential geometry on a finite Coxeter group'' in a sense of S. Majid.
Towards the geometry of double Hurwitz numbers

Double Hurwitz numbers count branched covers of the projective line with fixed branch points, with simple branching required over all but two points 0 and infinity, and the branching over 0 and infinity specified by partitions of the degree (with m and n parts respectively). Single Hurwitz numbers have a rich structure, explored by authors in many fields. The ELSV formula relates single Hurwitz numbers to intersection theory on the moduli space of curves, and has led to many consequences.
We determine the structure of double Hurwitz numbers using geometry, algebra, and representation theory. Our motivation is geometric: we give strong evidence that double Hurwitz numbers are top intersections on a universal Picard variety. In particular, we prove a piecewise-polynomiality result analogous to that implied by the ELSV formula. In the case m=1 and n is arbitrary, we conjecture an ELSV-type formula, and show it to be true in genus 0 and 1. The corresponding Witten-type correlation function has a better structure than that for single Hurwitz numbers, and it satisfies many geometric properties, such as the string and dilaton equations, and a genus expansion ansatz analogous to that of Itzykson and Zuber. We give a symmetric function description of the double Hurwitz generating series, which leads to explicit formulae for double Hurwitz numbers with given m and n. In the case where m is fixed but not necessarily 1, we prove a topological recursion on the corresponding generating series, which leads to closed-form expressions for double Hurwitz numbers and an analogue of the Goulden-Jackson polynomiality conjecture (an early conjectural variant of the ELSV formula).

Many signal processing problems can be solved by maximizing the fitness of a segmented model over all possible partitions of the data interval. This letter describes a simple but powerful algorithm that searches the exponentially large space of partitions of $N$ data points in time $O(N^2)$. The algorithm is guaranteed to find the exact global optimum, automatically determines the model order (the number of segments), has a convenient real-time mode, can be extended to higher dimensional data spaces, and solves a surprising variety of problems in signal detection and characterization, density estimation, cluster analysis and classification.

We give an explicit combinatorial Chevalley-type formula for the equivariant K-theory of generalized flag varieties G/P which is a direct generalization of the classical Chevalley formula. Our formula implies a simple combinatorial model for the characters of the irreducible representations of G and, more generally, for the Demazure characters. This model can be viewed as a discrete counterpart of the Littelmann path model, and has several advantages. Our construction is given in terms of a certain R-matrix, that is, a collection of operators satisfying the Yang-Baxter equation. It reduces to combinatorics of decompositions in the affine Weyl group and enumeration of saturated chains in the Bruhat order on the (nonaffine) Weyl group. Our model easily implies several symmetries of the coefficients in the Chevalley-type formula. We also derive a simple formula for multiplying an arbitrary Schubert class by a divisor class, as well as a dual Chevalley-type formula. The paper contains other applications and examples.

Quaternionic Geometry of Matroids

Building on a recent joint paper with Sturmfels, here we argue that the combinatorics of matroids is intimately related to the geometry and topology of toric hyperkaehler varieties. We show that just like toric varieties occupy a central role in Stanley's proof for the necessity of McMullen's conjecture (or g-inequalities) about the classification of face vectors of simplicial polytopes, the topology of toric hyperkaehler varieties leads to new restrictions on face vectors of matroid complexes. Namely in this paper we give two proofs that the injectivity part of the Hard Lefschetz theorem survives for toric hyperkaehler varieties. We explain how this implies the g-inequalities for rationally representable matroids. We show how the geometrical intuition in the first proof, coupled with results of Chari, leads to a proof of the g-inequalities for general matroid complexes, which is a recent result of Swartz. The geometrical idea in the second proof will show that a pure O-sequence should satisfy the g-inequalities, thus showing that our result is in fact a consequence of a long-standing conjecture of Stanley.
Toric Initial Ideals of $Δ$-Normal Configurations: Cohen-Macaulayness and Degree Bounds
A normal (respectively, graded normal) vector configuration $A$ defines the toric ideal $I_A$ of a normal (respectively, projectively normal) toric variety. These ideals are Cohen-Macaulay, and when $A$ is normal and graded, $I_A$ is generated in degree at most the dimension of $I_A$. Based on this, Sturmfels asked if these properties extend to initial ideals -- when $A$ is normal, is there an initial ideal of $I_A$ that is Cohen-Macaulay, and when $A$ is normal and graded, does $I_A$ have a Gröbner basis generated in degree at most $dim(I_A)$ ? In this paper, we answer both questions positively for $Δ$-normal configurations. These are normal configurations that admit a regular triangulation $Δ$ with the property that the subconfiguration in each cell of the triangulation is again normal. Such configurations properly contain among them all vector configurations that admit a regular unimodular triangulation. We construct non-trivial families of both $Δ$-normal and non-$Δ$-normal configurations.
Rayleigh Matroids

Motivated by a property of linear resistive electrical networks, we introduce the class of Rayleigh matroids. This is a subclass of the balanced matroids introduced by Feder and Mihail [FM] in 1992. We prove a variety of results relating Rayleigh matroids to other well-known classes -- in particular, we show that a binary matroid is Rayleigh if and only if it does not contain S_8 as a minor. This has the consequence that a binary matroid is balanced if and only if it is Rayleigh, and provides the first complete proof in print that S_8 is the only minor-minimal binary non-balanced matroid, as claimed in [FM]. We also give an example of a balanced matroid which is not Rayleigh.
