Complexity and Completeness of Immanants
Immanants are polynomial functions of n by n matrices attached to irreducible characters of the symmetric group S_n, or equivalently to Young diagrams of size n. Immanants include determinants and permanents as extreme cases. Valiant proved that computation of permanents is a complete problem in his algebraic model of NP theory, i.e., it is VNP-complete. We prove that computation of immanants is VNP-complete if the immanants are attached to a family of diagrams whose separation is $Ω(n^δ)$ for some $δ>0$. We define the separation of a diagram to be the largest number of overhanging boxes contained in a single row. Our theorem proves a conjecture of Buergisser for a large variety of families, and in particular we recover with new proofs his VNP-completeness results for hooks and rectangles.

In this paper we consider dimonoids, which are sets equipped with two associative binary operations. Dimonoids in the sense of J.-L. Loday are xamples of duplexes. The set of all permutations, gives an example of a duplex which is not a dimonoid. We construct a free duplex generated by a given set via planar trees and then we prove that the set of all permutations form a free duplex on an explicitly described set of generators. We also consider duplexes coming from planar binary trees and vertices of the cubes. We prove that these duplexes are free with one generator in appropriate variety of duplexes.

Every real algebraic variety is isomorphic to the set of totally mixed Nash equilibria of some three-person game, and also to the set of totally mixed Nash equilibria of an $N$-person game in which each player has two pure strategies.
From the Nash-Tognoli Theorem it follows that every compact differentiable manifold can be encoded as the set of totally mixed Nash equilibria of some game. Moreover, there exist isolated Nash equilibria of arbitrary topological degree.
Decomposing Hessenberg varieties over classical groups
Hessenberg varieties are a family of subvarieties of the flag variety, including the Springer fibers, the Peterson variety, and the entire flag variety itself. The seminal example arises from a problem in numerical analysis and consists for a fixed linear operator M of the full flags V_1 \subsetneq V_2 >... \subsetneq V_n in GL_n with M V_i contained in V_{i+1} for all i.
In this paper I show that all Hessenberg varieties in type A_n and semisimple and regular nilpotent Hessenberg varieties in types B_n,C_n, and D_n can be paved by affine spaces. Moreover, this paving is the intersection of a particular Bruhat decomposition with the Hessenberg variety. In type A_n, an equivalent description of the cells of the paving in terms of certain fillings of a Young diagram can be used to compute the Betti numbers of Hessenberg varieties. As an example, I show that the Poincare polynomial of the Peterson variety in A_n is \sum_{i =0}^{n-1} \binom{n-1}{i} x^{2i}.

Fix two lattice paths P and Q from (0,0) to (m,r) that use East and North steps with P never going above Q. We show that the lattice paths that go from (0,0) to (m,r) and that remain in the region bounded by P and Q can be identified with the bases of a particular type of transversal matroid, which we call a lattice path matroid. We consider a variety of enumerative aspects of these matroids and we study three important matroid invariants, namely the Tutte polynomial and, for special types of lattice path matroids, the characteristic polynomial and the beta invariant. In particular, we show that the Tutte polynomial is the generating function for two basic lattice path statistics and we show that certain sequences of lattice path matroids give rise to sequences of Tutte polynomials for which there are relatively simple generating functions. We show that Tutte polynomials of lattice path matroids can be computed in polynomial time. Also, we obtain a new result about lattice paths from an analysis of the beta invariant of certain lattice path matroids.

Let mathcal{O}_lambda be a generic coadjoint orbit of a compact semi-simple Lie group K. Weight varieties are the symplectic reductions of mathcal{O}_lambda by the maximal torus T in K. We use a theorem of Tolman and Weitsman to compute the cohomology ring of these varieties. Our formula relies on a Schubert basis of the equivariant cohomology of \mathcal{O}_lambda and it makes explicit the dependence on λand a parameter in Lie(T)^*.

Lagrangian Matroids: Representations of Type $B_n$
We introduce the concept of orientation for Lagrangian matroids represented in the flag variety of maximal isotropic subspaces of dimension N in the real vector space of dimension 2N+1. The paper continues the study started in math.CO/0209100.

An ordinal-valued metric taking its values in the set of all countable ordinals can be assigned to a metrizable set of nodes in a transfinite graph. Then, a variety of results concerning nodal eccentricities, radii, diameters, centers, peripheries, and blocks can be extended to transfinite graphs.

In this note, a class of error-correcting codes is associated to a toric variety associated to a fan defined over a finite field $\fff_q$, analogous to the class of Goppa codes associated to a curve. For such a ``toric code'' satisfying certain additional conditions, we present an efficient decoding algorithm for the dual of a Goppa code. Many examples are given. For small $q$, many of these codes have parameters beating the Gilbert-Varshamov bound. In fact, using toric codes, we construct a $(n,k,d)=(49,11,28)$ code over $\fff_8$, which is better than any other known code listed in Brouwer's on-line tables for that $n$ and $k$.
Cluster algebras and Poisson geometry
We introduce a Poisson variety compatible with a cluster algebra structure and a compatible toric action on this variety. We study Poisson and topological properties of the union of generic orbits of this toric action. In particular, we compute the number of connected components of the union of generic toric orbits for cluster algebras over real numbers. As a corollary we compute the number of connected components of refined open Bruhat cells in Grassmanians G(k,n) over real numbers.

We investigate the proportion of fixed point free permutations (derangements) in finite transitive permutation groups. This article is the first in a series where we prove a conjecture of Shalev that the proportion of such elements is bounded away from zero for a simple finite group. In fact, there are much stronger results. This article focuses on finite Chevalley groups of bounded rank. We also discuss derangements in algebraic groups and in more general primitive groups. These results have applications in questions about probabilistic generation of finite simple groups and maps between varieties over finite fields.

A certain family of orthogonal groups (called "Clifford groups" by G. E. Wall) has arisen in a variety of different contexts in recent years. These groups have a simple definition as the automorphism groups of certain generalized Barnes-Wall lattices. This leads to an especially simple construction for the usual Barnes-Wall lattices. This is based on the third author's talk at the Forney-Fest, M.I.T., March 2000, which in turn is based on our paper "The Invariants of the Clifford Groups", Designs, Codes, Crypt., 24 (2001), 99--121, to which the reader is referred for further details and proofs.

A 321-k-gon-avoiding permutation pi avoids 321 and the following four patterns: k(k+2)(k+3)...(2k-1)1(2k)23...(k+1), k(k+2)(k+3)...(2k-1)(2k)123...(k+1), (k+1)(k+2)(k+3)...(2k-1)1(2k)23...k, (k+1)(k+2)(k+3)...(2k-1)(2k)123...k. The 321-4-gon-avoiding permutations were introduced and studied by Billey and Warrington [BW] as a class of elements of the symmetric group whose Kazhdan-Lusztig, Poincare polynomials, and the singular loci of whose Schubert varieties have fairly simple formulas and descriptions. Stankova and West [SW] gave an exact enumeration in terms of linear recurrences with constant coefficients for the cases k=2,3,4. In this paper, we extend these results by finding an explicit expression for the generating function for the number of 321-k-gon-avoiding permutations on n letters. The generating function is expressed via Chebyshev polynomials of the second kind.

Multi-way tables with specified marginals arise in a variety of applications in statistics and operations research. We provide a comprehensive complexity classification of three fundamental computational problems on tables: existence, counting and entry-security.
One major outcome of our work is that each of the following problems is intractable already for "slim" 3-tables, with constant and smallest possible number 3 of rows: (1) deciding existence of 3-tables with given consistent 2-marginals; (2) counting all 3-tables with given 2-marginals; (3) finding whether an integer value is attained in entry (i,j,k) by at least one of the 3-tables satisfying given (feasible) 2-marginals. This implies that a characterization of feasible marginals for such slim tables, sought by much recent research, is unlikely to exist.
Another important consequence of our study is a systematic efficient way of embedding the set of 3-tables satisfying any given 1-marginals and entry upper bounds in a set of slim 3-tables satisfying suitable 2-marginals with no entry bounds. This provides a valuable tool for studying multi-index transportation problems and multi-index transportation polytopes.
On the Number of Embeddings of Minimally Rigid Graphs

Rigid frameworks in some Euclidian space are embedded graphs having a unique local realization (up to Euclidian motions) for the given edge lengths, although globally they may have several. We study the number of distinct planar embeddings of minimally rigid graphs with $n$ vertices. We show that, modulo planar rigid motions, this number is at most ${{2n-4}\choose {n-2}} \approx 4^n$. We also exhibit several families which realize lower bounds of the order of $2^n$, $2.21^n$ and $2.88^n$.
For the upper bound we use techniques from complex algebraic geometry, based on the (projective) Cayley-Menger variety $CM^{2,n}(C)\subset P_{{{n}\choose {2}}-1}(C)$ over the complex numbers $C$. In this context, point configurations are represented by coordinates given by squared distances between all pairs of points. Sectioning the variety with $2n-4$ hyperplanes yields at most $deg(CM^{2,n})$ zero-dimensional components, and one finds this degree to be $D^{2,n}={1/2}{{2n-4}\choose {n-2}}$. The lower bounds are related to inductive constructions of minimally rigid graphs via Henneberg sequences.
The same approach works in higher dimensions. In particular we show that it leads to an upper bound of $2 D^{3,n}= {\frac{2^{n-3}}{n-2}}{{n-6}\choose{n-3}}$ for the number of spatial embeddings with generic edge lengths of the 1-skeleton of a simplicial polyhedron, up to rigid motions.

We consider a manifold X obtained by a Kahler reduction of C^n, and we define its hyperkahler analogue M as a hyperkahler reduction of T^*C^n = H^n by the same group. In the case where the group is abelian and X is a smooth toric variety, M is a toric hyperkahler manifold, as defined by Bielawski-Dancer, and further studied by Konno and Hausel-Sturmfels. The manifold M carries a natural action of S^1, induced by the scalar action of S^1 on the fibers of T^*C^n. In this paper we study this action, computing its fixed points and its equivariant cohomology. As an application, we use the associated Z/2 action on the real locus of M to compute a deformation of the Orlik-Solomon algebra of a smooth, generic, real hyperplane arrangement, depending nontrivially on the affine structure of the arrangement. This deformation is given by the Z/2-equivariant cohomology of the complement of the complexification, where Z/2 acts by complex conjugation.

Let w_0 denote the permutation [n,n-1,...,2,1]. We give two new explicit formulae for the Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials P_{w_0w,w_0x} in S_n when x is a maximal element in the singular locus of the Schubert variety X_w. To do this, we utilize a standard identity that relates P_{x,w} and P_{w_0w,w_0x}.
How is a graph like a manifold?
In this article, we discuss some classical problems in combinatorics which can be solved by exploiting analogues between graph theory and the theory of manifolds. One well-known example is the McMullen conjecture, which was settled twenty years ago by Richard Stanley by interpreting certain combinatorial invariants of convex polytopes as the Betti numbers of a complex projective variety. Another example is the classical parallel redrawing problem, which turns out to be closely related to the problem of computing the second Betti number of a complex compact $(\C^*)^n$-manifold.

We suggest a (conjectural) construction of a basis in the plus part of the affine Lie algebra of type ADE indexed by irreducible components of certain quiver varieties. This construction is closely related to a string-theoretic construction of a Lie algebra of BPS states. We then study the new combinatorial questions about the (classical) root systems naturally arising from our constructions and Lusztig's semicanonical basis.
