We prove a formula for the structure sheaf of a quiver variety in the Grothendieck ring of its embedding variety. This formula generalizes and gives new expressions for Grothendieck polynomials. We furthermore conjecture that the coefficients in our formula have signs which alternate with degree. The proof of our formula involves $K$-theoretic generalizations of several useful cohomological tools, including the Thom-Porteous formula, the Jacobi-Trudi formula, and a Gysin formula of Pragacz.

The special fiber of the local model of a PEL Shimura variety with Iwahori-type level structure admits a cellular decomposition. The set of strata is in a natural way a finite subset of the affine Weyl group determined by the Shimura data. In this paper, we generalize and give a new proof of a theorem of Kottwitz and Rapoport concerning the description of this set for the case of linear and symplectic groups. For higher rank groups not of type A_n, we produce counterexamples showing the situation is not as nice in general. Also, we recover a theorem of Deodhar characterizing the Bruhat order on S_n.
Tensor product varieties and crystals. ADE case
Let g be a simple simply laced Lie algebra. In this paper two families of varieties associated to the Dynkin graph of g are described: ``tensor product'' and ``multiplicity'' varieties. These varieties are closely related to Nakajima's quiver varieties and should play an important role in the geometric constructions of tensor products and intertwining operators. In particular it is shown that the set of irreducible components of a tensor product variety can be equipped with a structure of g-crystal isomorphic to the crystal of the canonical basis of the tensor product of several simple finite dimensional representations of g, and that the number of irreducible components of a multiplicity variety is equal to the multiplicity of a certain representation in the tensor product of several others. Moreover the decomposition of a tensor product into a direct sum is described geometrically (on the level of crystals).

The role of Spaltenstein varieties in the tensor product for GL is explained. In particular a direct (non-combinatorial) proof of the fact that the number of irreducible components of a Spaltenstein variety is equal to a Littlewood-Richardson coefficient (i.e. certain tensor product multiplicity) is obtained.

For each strongly connected finite-dimensional (pure) simplicial complex we construct a finite group, the group of projectivities of the complex, which is a combinatorial but not a topological invariant. This group is studied for combinatorial manifolds and, in particular, for polytopal simplicial spheres. The results are applied to a coloring problem for simplicial (or, dually, simple) polytopes which arises in the area of toric algebraic varieties.

We give an explicit combinatorial description of the irreducible components of the singular locus of the Schubert variety X_w for any element w in S_n. Our description of the irreducible components is computationally more efficient (O(n^6)) than the previously best known algorithms. This result proves a conjecture of Lakshmibai and Sandhya regarding this singular locus. Furthermore, we give simple formulas for calculating the Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials at the maximum singular points.
Intersection complexes of fans and toric varieties
In the article math.AG/0102085, Lemma 5.5 was false. Hence the decomposition theorem (Theorem 5.8) and all statements in Section 7 are not proved.
Restricted permutations and Chebyshev polynomials
We study generating functions for the number of permutations in $\SS_n$ subject to two restrictions. One of the restrictions belongs to $\SS_3$, while the other to $\SS_k$. It turns out that in a large variety of cases the answer can be expressed via Chebyshev polynomials of the second kind.

We answer some questions related to multiplicity formulas by Rosenthal and Zelevinsky and by Lakshmibai and Weyman for points on Schubert varieties in Grassmannians. In particular, we give combinatorial interpretations in terms of nonintersecting lattice paths of these formulas, which makes the equality of the two formulas immediately obvious. Furthermore we provide an alternative determinantal formula for these multiplicities, and we show that they count semistandard tableaux of unusual shapes.

We propose a theory of double Schubert polynomials P_w(X,Y) for the Lie types B, C, D which naturally extends the family of Lascoux of Schutzenberger in type A. These polynomials satisfy positivity, orthogonality, and stability properties, and represent the classes of Schubert varieties and degeneracy loci of vector bundles. When w is a maximal Grassmannian element of the Weyl group, P_w(X,Y) can be expressed in terms of Schur-type determinants and Pfaffians, in analogy with the type A formula of Kempf and Laksov. An example, motivated by quantum cohomology, shows that there are no Chern class formulas for degeneracy loci of ``isotropic morphisms'' of bundles.

The toric Hilbert scheme parametrizes all algebras isomorphic to a given semigroup algebra as a multigraded vectorspace. All components of the scheme are toric varieties, and among them, there is a fairly well understood coherent component. However, it is unknown whether toric Hilbert schemes are always connected. In this chapter we illustrate the use of Macaulay 2 for exploring the structure of toric Hilbert schemes. In the process we will encounter algorithms from commutative algebra, algebraic geometry, polyhedral theory and geometric combinatorics.

The paper surveys some new results and open problems connected with such fundamental combinatorial concepts as polytopes, simplicial complexes, cubical complexes, and subspace arrangements. Particular attention is paid to the case of simplicial and cubical subdivisions of manifolds and, especially, spheres. We describe important constructions which allow to study all these combinatorial objects by means of methods of commutative and homological algebra. The proposed approach to combinatorial problems relies on the theory of moment-angle complexes, currently being developed by the authors. The theory centres around the construction that assigns to each simplicial complex $K$ with $m$ vertices a $T^m$-space $\zk$ with a special bigraded cellular decomposition. In the framework of this theory, the well-known non-singular toric varieties arise as orbit spaces of maximally free actions of subtori on moment-angle complexes corresponding to simplicial spheres. We express different invariants of simplicial complexes and related combinatorial-geometrical objects in terms of the bigraded cohomology rings of the corresponding moment-angle complexes. Finally, we show that the new relationships between combinatorics, geometry and topology result in solutions to some well-known topological problems.

Given a finitely-generated group G, and a finite group Γ, Philip Hall defined δ_Γto be the number of factor groups of G that are isomorphic to Γ. We show how to compute the Hall invariants by cohomological and combinatorial methods, when G is finitely-presented, and Γbelongs to a certain class of metabelian groups. Key to this approach is the stratification of the character variety by the jumping loci of the cohomology of G, with coefficients in rank 1 local systems over a suitably chosen field \K. Counting relevant torsion points on these "characteristic" subvarieties gives δ_Γ(G). In the process, we compute the distribution of prime-index, normal subgroups K of G according to the dimension of the the first homology group of K with \K coefficients, provided \char\K does not divide the index of K in G. In turn, we use this distribution to count low-index subgroups of G. We illustrate these techniques in the case when G is the fundamental group of the complement of an arrangement of either affine lines in \C^2, or transverse planes in \R^4.
Tangential Structures on Toric Manifolds, and Connected Sums of Polytopes
We extend work of Davis and Januszkiewicz by considering {\it omnioriented} toric manifolds, whose canonical codimension-2 submanifolds are independently oriented. We show that each omniorientation induces a canonical stably complex structure, which is respected by the torus action and so defines an element of an equivariant cobordism ring. As an application, we compute the complex bordism groups and cobordism ring of an arbitrary omnioriented toric manifold. We consider a family of examples $B_{i,j}$, which are toric manifolds over products of simplices, and verify that their natural stably complex structure is induced by an omniorientation. Studying connected sums of products of the $B_{i,j}$ allows us to deduce that every complex cobordism class of dimension >2 contains a toric manifold, necessarily connected, and so provides a positive answer to the toric analogue of Hirzebruch's famous question for algebraic varieties. In previous work, we dealt only with disjoint unions, and ignored the relationship between the stably complex structure and the action of the torus. In passing, we introduce a notion of connected sum $#$ for simple $n$-dimensional polytopes; when $P^n$ is a product of simplices, we describe $P^n# Q^n$ by applying an appropriate sequence of {\it pruning operators}, or hyperplane cuts, to $Q^n$.

We give a new algorithm for generating Greechie diagrams with arbitrary chosen number of atoms or blocks (with 2,3,4,... atoms) and provide a computer program for generating the diagrams. The results show that the previous algorithm does not produce every diagram and that it is at least 100,000 times slower. We also provide an algorithm and programs for checking of Greechie diagram passage by equations defining varieties of orthomodular lattices and give examples from Hilbert lattices. At the end we discuss some additional characteristics of Greechie diagrams.

We give a combinatorial formula for the Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials $P_{x,w}$ in the symmetric group when $w$ is a 321-hexagon-avoiding permutation. Our formula, which depends on a combinatorial framework developed by Deodhar, can be expressed in terms of a simple statistic on all subexpressions of any fixed reduced expression for $w$. We also show that $w$ being 321-hexagon-avoiding is equivalent to several other conditions, such as the Bott-Samelson resolution of the Schubert variety $X_w$ being small. We conclude with a simple method for completely determining the singular locus of $X_w$ when $w$ is 321-hexagon-avoiding.

This paper studies two related subjects. One is some combinatorics arising from linear projections of polytopes and fans of cones. The other is quotient varieties of toric varieties. The relation is that projections of polytopes are related to quotients of projective toric varieties and projection of fans are related to quotients of general toric varieties. Despite its relation to geometry the first part is purely combinatorial and should be of interest in its own right.

We prove an explicit combinatorial formula for the structure constants of the Grothendieck ring of a Grassmann variety with respect to its basis of Schubert structure sheaves. We furthermore relate K-theory of Grassmannians to a bialgebra of stable Grothendieck polynomials, which is a K-theory parallel of the ring of symmetric functions.
