Ordering Candidates via Vantage Points
Published • View PublicationBIB
Given an $n$-element set $C\subseteq\mathbb{R}^d$ and a (sufficiently generic) $k$-element multiset $V\subseteq\mathbb{R}^d$, we can order the points in $C$ by ranking each point $c\in C$ according to the sum of the distances from $c$ to the points of $V$. Let $Ψ_k(C)$ denote the set of orderings of $C$ that can be obtained in this manner as $V$ varies, and let $ψ^{\mathrm{max}}_{d,k}(n)$ be the maximum of $\lvertΨ_k(C)\rvert$ as $C$ ranges over all $n$-element subsets of $\mathbb{R}^d$. We prove that $ψ^{\mathrm{max}}_{d,k}(n)=Θ_{d,k}(n^{2dk})$ when $d \geq 2$ and that $ψ^{\mathrm{max}}_{1,k}(n)=Θ_k(n^{4\lceil k/2\rceil -1})$. As a step toward proving this result, we establish a bound on the number of sign patterns determined by a collection of functions that are sums of radicals of nonnegative polynomials; this can be understood as an analogue of a classical theorem of Warren. We also prove several results about the set $Ψ(C)=\bigcup_{k\geq 1}Ψ_k(C)$; this includes an exact description of $Ψ(C)$ when $d=1$ and when $C$ is the set of vertices of a vertex-transitive polytope.
An asymptotic property of quaternary additive codes
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $n_k(s)$ be the maximal length $n$ such that a quaternary additive $[n,k,n-s]_4$-code exists. We solve a natural asymptotic problem by determining the lim sup $λ_k$ of $n_k(s)/s,$ and the smallest value of $s$ such that $n_k(s)/s=λ_k.$ Our new family of quaternary additive codes has parameters $[4^k-1,k,4^k-4^{k-1}]_4=[2^{2k}-1,k,3\cdot 2^{2k-2}]_4$ (where $k=l/2$ and $l$ is an odd integer). These are constant-weight codes. The binary codes obtained by concatenation meet the Griesmer bound with equality. The proof is in terms of multisets of lines in $PG(l-1,2).$

The Widths of Strict Outerconfluent Graphs
Published in Discrete Mathematics & Theoretical Computer Science, vol. 26:3, Graph Theory (December 5, 2024) dmtcs:12862 • View PublicationBIB
Strict outerconfluent drawing is a style of graph drawing in which vertices are drawn on the boundary of a disk, adjacencies are indicated by the existence of smooth curves through a system of tracks within the disk, and no two adjacent vertices are connected by more than one of these smooth tracks. We investigate graph width parameters on the graphs that have drawings in this style. We prove that the clique-width of these graphs is unbounded, but their twin-width is bounded.

A class of trees determined by their chromatic symmetric functions
Published • View PublicationBIB
Stanley introduced the concept of chromatic symmetric functions of graphs which extends and refines the notion of chromatic polynomials of graphs, and asked whether trees are determined up to isomorphism by their chromatic symmetric functions. Using the technique of differentiation with respect to power-sum symmetric functions, we give a positive answer to Stanley's question for the class of trees with exactly two vertices of degree at least 3. In addition, we prove that for any tree $T$, the generalized degree sequence for subtrees of $T$ is determined by the chromatic symmetric function of $T$, providing evidence to a conjecture of Crew.

Integration on complex Grassmannians, deformed monotone Hurwitz numbers, and interlacing phenomena
Published • View PublicationBIB
We introduce a family of polynomials, which arise in three distinct ways: in the large $N$ expansion of a matrix integral, as a weighted enumeration of factorisations of permutations, and via the topological recursion. More explicitly, we interpret the complex Grassmannian $\mathrm{Gr}(M,N)$ as the space of $N \times N$ idempotent Hermitian matrices of rank $M$ and develop a Weingarten calculus to integrate products of matrix elements over it. In the regime of large $N$ and fixed ratio $\frac{M}{N}$, such integrals have expansions whose coefficients count factorisations of permutations into monotone sequences of transpositions, with each sequence weighted by a monomial in $t = 1 - \frac{N}{M}$. This gives rise to the desired polynomials, which specialise to the monotone Hurwitz numbers when $t = 1$. These so-called deformed monotone Hurwitz numbers satisfy a cut-and-join recursion, a one-point recursion, and the topological recursion. Furthermore, we conjecture on the basis of overwhelming empirical evidence that the deformed monotone Hurwitz numbers are real-rooted polynomials whose roots satisfy remarkable interlacing phenomena. An outcome of our work is the viewpoint that the topological recursion can be used to "topologise" sequences of polynomials, and we claim that the resulting families of polynomials may possess interesting properties. As a further case study, we consider a weighted enumeration of dessins d'enfant and conjecture that the resulting polynomials are also real-rooted and satisfy analogous interlacing properties.
The number of full exceptional collections modulo spherical twists for extended Dynkin quivers
Published • View PublicationBIB
This paper calculates the number of full exceptional collections modulo an action of a free abelian group of rank one for an abelian category of coherent sheaves on an orbifold projective line with a positive orbifold Euler characteristic, which is equivalent to the one of finite dimensional modules over an extended Dynkin quiver of ADE type by taking their derived categories. This is done by a recursive formula naturally generalizing the one for the Dynkin case by Deligne whose categorical interpretation is due to Obaid--Nauman--Shammakh--Fakieh--Ringel. Moreover, the number coincides with the degree of the Lyashko--Looijenga map of the Frobenius manifold for the orbifold projective line, which hints a consistency in some problems in Bridgeland's stability conditions and mirror symmetry.

Characterization of rings with genus two prime ideal sum graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $R$ be a commutative ring with unity. The prime ideal sum graph of the ring $R$ is a simple undirected graph whose vertex set is the set of nonzero proper ideals of $R$ and two distinct vertices $I$ and $J$ are adjacent if and only if $I + J$ is a prime ideal of $R$. In this paper, we characterize all the finite non-local commutative rings whose prime ideal sum graph is of genus $2$.

A short note on the order of the double reduced 2-factor transfer digraph for rectangular grid graphs
We prove that the order of the double reduced 2-factor transfer digraph ${\cal R}^{**}_{m}$ which is needed for the enumeration of the spanning unions of cycles in the rectangular grid graph $P_m \times P_n$ ($m,n \in N$), when $m$ is odd, is equal to $\displaystyle \mid V({\cal R}^{**}_{m}) \mid = \frac{1}{2} \left[{m+1 \choose (m-1)/2 } + {(m+1)/2 \choose \lfloor (m+1)/4 \rfloor}\right].$
The parametrix construction of the heat kernel on a graph
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we develop the parametrix approach for constructing the heat kernel on a graph $G$. In particular, we highlight two specific cases. First, we consider the case when $G$ is embedded in a Eulidean domain or manifold $Ω$, and we use a heat kernel associated to $Ω$ to obtain a formula for the heat kernel on $G$. Second, we consider when $G$ is a subgraph of a larger graph $\widetilde{G}$, and we obtain a formula for the heat kernel on $G$ from the heat kernel on $\widetilde{G}$ restricted to $G$.

An Elekes-Rónyai theorem for sets with few products
Published • View PublicationBIB
Given $d,n \in \mathbb{N}$, we write a polynomial $F \in \mathbb{C}[x_1,\dots,x_n]$ to be degenerate if there exist $P\in \mathbb{C}[y_1, \dots, y_{n-1}]$ and $m_j = x_1^{v_{j,1}}\dots x_n^{v_{j,n}}$ with $v_{j,1}, \dots, v_{j,n} \in \mathbb{Q}$, for every $1 \leq j \leq n-1$, such that $F = P(m_1, \dots, m_{n-1})$. Our main result shows that whenever $F$ is non-degenerate, then for every finite set $A\subseteq \mathbb{C}$ such that $|A\cdot A| \leq K|A|$, one has \[ |F(A, \dots, A)| \gg_{d,n} |A|^n 2^{-O_{d,n}((\log 2K)^{3 + o(1)})}. \] This is sharp up to a factor of $O_{d,n,K}(1)$ since we have the upper bound $|F(A,\dots,A)| \leq |A|^n$ and the fact that for every degenerate $F$ and finite set $A \subseteq \mathbb{C}$ with $|A\cdot A| \leq K|A|$, one has \[ |F(A,\dots,A)| \ll K^{O_F(1)}|A|^{n-1}.\] Our techniques rely on a variety of combinatorial and linear algebraic arguments combined with Freiman type inverse theorems and Schmidt's subspace theorem.

Linear Degenerate Tropical Flag Varieties
We study linear degenerations of flag varieties from the point of view of tropical geometry. We define the linear degenerate flag Dressian and prove a correspondence between: $(a)$ points in the linear degenerate flag Dressian, $(b)$ linear degenerate flags of valuated matroids, $(c)$ linear degenerate flags of tropical linear spaces, and $(d)$ morphisms of valuated matroids arising from projection maps.

We prove that the basis and the generating function of a geometric grid class of permutations Geom$(M)$ are computable from the matrix $M$, as well as some variations on this result. Our main tool is monadic second-order logic on permutations and words.

Stirling Decomposition of Graph Homology in Genus 1
Published • View PublicationBIB
We prove that commutative graph homology in genus $g=1$ with $n\geq 3$ markings has a direct sum decomposition whose summands have rank given by Stirling numbers of the first kind. These summands are computed as the homology of complexes of certain decorated trees. This paper was written with a non-expert audience in mind, and an emphasis is placed on an elementary combinatorial description of these decorated tree complexes.

A Littlewood-Offord kind of problem in $\mathbb{Z}_p$ and $Γ$-sequenceability
The Littlewood-Offord problem is a classical question in probability theory and discrete mathematics, proposed, firstly by Littlewood and Offord in the 1940s. Given a set $A$ of integer, this problem asks for an upper bound on the probability that a randomly chosen subset $X$ of $A$ sums to an integer $x$. This article proposes a variation of the problem, considering a subset $A$ of a cyclic group of prime order and examining subsets $X\subseteq A$ of a given cardinality $\ell$. The main focus of this paper is then on bounding the probability distribution of the sum $Y$ of $\ell$ i.i.d. $Y_1,\dots, Y_{\ell}$ whose support is contained in $\mathbb{Z}_p$. The main result here presented is that, if the probability distributions of the variables $Y_i$ are bounded by $λ\leq 9/10$, then, assuming that $p> \frac{2}λ\left(\frac{\ell_0}{3}\right)^ν$ (for some $\ell_0\leq\ell$), the distribution of $Y$ is bounded by $λ\left(\frac{3}{\ell_0}\right)^ν$ for some positive absolute constant $ν$. Then an analogous result is implied for the Littlewood-Offord problem over $\mathbb{Z}_p$ on subsets $X$ of a given cardinality $\ell$ in the regime where $n$ is large enough. Finally, as an application of our results, we propose a variation of the set-sequenceability problem: that of $Γ$-sequenceability. Given a graph $Γ$ on the vertex set $\{1,2,\dots,n\}$ and given a subset $A\subseteq \mathbb{Z}_p$ of size $n$, here we want to find an ordering of $A$ such that the partial sums $s_i$ and $s_j$ are different whenever $\{i,j\}\in E(Γ)$. As a consequence of our results on the Littlewood-Offord problem, we have been able to prove that, if the maximum degree of $Γ$ is at most $d$, $n$ is large enough, and $p>n^2$, any subset $A\subseteq \mathbb{Z}_p$ of size $n$ is $Γ$-sequenceable.

Sums of squares of eigenvalues and the vector chromatic number
In this short paper we prove that the sum of the squares of negative (or positive) eigenvalues of the adjacency matrix of a graph is lower bounded by the sum of the degrees divided by the vector chromatic number, resolving a conjecture by Wocjan, Elphick and Anekstein (2018).
A survey on constructive methods for the Oberwolfach problem and its variants
Published • View PublicationBIB
The generalized Oberwolfach problem asks for a decomposition of a graph $G$ into specified 2-regular spanning subgraphs $F_1,\ldots, F_k$, called factors. The classic Oberwolfach problem corresponds to the case when all of the factors are pairwise isomorphic, and $G$ is the complete graph of odd order or the complete graph of even order with the edges of a $1$-factor removed. When there are two possible factor types, it is called the Hamilton-Waterloo problem. In this paper we present a survey of constructive methods which have allowed recent progress in this area. Specifically, we consider blow-up type constructions, particularly as applied to the case when each factor consists of cycles of the same length. We consider the case when the factors are all bipartite (and hence consist of even cycles) and a method for using circulant graphs to find solutions. We also consider constructions which yield solutions with well-behaved automorphisms.

Spectral multiplicity functions of adjacency operators of graphs and cospectral infinite graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
The adjacency operator of a graph has a spectrum and a class of scalar-valued spectral measures which have been systematically analyzed; it also has a spectral multiplicity function which has been less studied. The first purpose of this article is to review some examples of infinite graphs for which the spectral multiplicity function of the adjacency operator has been determined. The second purpose of this article is to show explicit examples of infinite connected graphs which are cospectral, i.e., which have unitarily equivalent adjacency operators, and explicit examples of infinite connected graphs which are uniquely determined by their spectrum.

Ramsey problems for monotone paths in graphs and hypergraphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
The study of ordered Ramsey numbers of monotone paths for graphs and hypergraphs has a long history, going back to the celebrated work by Erdős and Szekeres in the early days of Ramsey theory. In this paper we obtain several results in this area, establishing two conjectures of Mubayi and Suk and improving bounds due to Balko, Cibulka, Král and Kynčl. We also obtain a color-monotone version of the well-known Canonical Ramsey Theorem of Erdős and Rado, which could be of independent interest.

The base size of the symmetric group acting on subsets
Published • View PublicationBIB
A base for a permutation group $G$ acting on a set $Ω$ is a subset $\mathcal{B}$ of $Ω$ such that the pointwise stabiliser $G_{(\mathcal{B})}$ is trivial. Let $n$ and $r$ be positive integers with $n>2r$. The symmetric and alternating groups $\mathrm{S}_n$ and $\mathrm{A}_n$ admit natural primitive actions on the set of $r$-element subsets of $\{1,2,\dots, n\}$. Building on work of Halasi [6], we provide explicit expressions for the base sizes of all of these actions, and hence determine the base size of all primitive actions of $\mathrm{S}_n$ and $\mathrm{A}_n$.

On the approximability of the burning number
The burning number of a graph $G$ is the smallest number $b$ such that the vertices of $G$ can be covered by balls of radii $0, 1, \dots, b-1$. As computing the burning number of a graph is known to be NP-hard, even on trees, it is natural to consider polynomial time approximation algorithms for the quantity. The best known approximation factor in the literature is $3$ for general graphs and $2$ for trees. In this note we give a $2/(1-e^{-2})+\varepsilon=2.313\dots$-approximation algorithm for the burning number of general graphs, and a PTAS for the burning number of trees and forests. Moreover, we show that computing a $(\frac53-\varepsilon)$-approximation of the burning number of a general graph $G$ is NP-hard.
