The tropical critical points of an affine matroid
Published • View Publication • BIB
We prove that the number of tropical critical points of an affine matroid (M,e) is equal to the beta invariant of M. Motivated by the computation of maximum likelihood degrees, this number is defined to be the degree of the intersection of the Bergman fan of (M,e) and the inverted Bergman fan of N=(M/e)*, where e is an element of M that is neither a loop nor a coloop. Equivalently, for a generic weight vector w on E-e, this is the number of ways to find weights (0,x) on M and y on N with x+y=w such that on each circuit of M (resp. N), the minimum x-weight (resp. y-weight) occurs at least twice. This answers a question of Sturmfels.

A polynomial-size extended formulation for the multilinear polytope of beta-acyclic hypergraphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
We consider the multilinear polytope defined as the convex hull of the set of binary points satisfying a collection of multilinear equations. The complexity of the facial structure of the multilinear polytope is closely related to the acyclicity degree of the underlying hypergraph. We obtain a polynomial-size extended formulation for the multilinear polytope of beta-acyclic hypergraphs, hence characterizing the acyclic hypergraphs for which such a formulation can be constructed.

Fault-Tolerant Locating-Dominating sets with Error-correction
Published • View Publication • BIB
A locating-dominating set is a subset of vertices representing "detectors" in a graph G; each detector monitors its closed neighborhood and can distinguish its own location from its neighbors, and given all sensor input, the system can locate an "intruder" anywhere in the graph. We explore a fault-tolerant variant of locating-dominating sets, error-correcting locating-dominating (ERR:LD) sets, which can tolerate an incorrect signal from a single detector. In particular, we characterize error-correcting locating-dominating sets, and derive its existence criteria. We also prove that the problem of determining the minimum cardinality of ERR:LD set in arbitrary graphs is NP-complete. Additionally, we establish lower and upper bounds for the minimum density of ERR:LD sets in infinite grids and cubic graphs, and prove the lower bound for cubic graphs is sharp.

A random coloring process gives improved bounds for the Erdős-Gyárfás problem on generalized Ramsey numbers
Published • View Publication • BIB
The Erdős-Gyárfás number $f(n, p, q)$ is the smallest number of colors needed to color the edges of the complete graph $K_n$ so that all of its $p$-clique spans at least $q$ colors. In this paper we improve the best known upper bound on $f(n, p, q)$ for many fixed values of $p, q$ and large $n$. Our proof uses a randomized coloring process, which we analyze using the so-called differential equation method to establish dynamic concentration.

Some stable plethysms

In this note, we prove some new stability results for plethysm coefficients. As special cases, we verify a conjecture of Wildon, and show the stability of sequences recently predicted by Bessenrodt, Bowman and Paget to be weakly increasing.
On Eigenvalue Gaps of Integer Matrices
Published • View Publication • BIB
Given an $n\times n$ matrix with integer entries in the range $[-h,h]$, how close can two of its distinct eigenvalues be? The best previously known examples have a minimum gap of $h^{-O(n)}$. Here we give an explicit construction of matrices with entries in $[0,h]$ with two eigenvalues separated by at most $h^{-n^2/16+o(n^2)}$. Up to a constant in the exponent, this agrees with the known lower bound of $Ω((2\sqrt{n})^{-n^2}h^{-n^2})$ \cite{mahler1964inequality}. Bounds on the minimum gap are relevant to the worst case analysis of algorithms for diagonalization and computing canonical forms of integer matrices. In addition to our explicit construction, we show there are many matrices with a slightly larger gap of roughly $h^{-n^2/32}$. We also construct 0-1 matrices which have two eigenvalues separated by at most $2^{-n^2/64+o(n^2)}$.

Cameron-Liebler sets for maximal totally isotropic flats in classical affine spaces
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $ACG(2ν,\mathbb{F}_q)$ be the $2ν$-dimensional classical affine space with parameter $e$ over a $q$-element finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$, and ${\cal O}_ν$ be the set of all maximal totally isotropic flats in $ACG(2ν,\mathbb{F}_q)$. In this paper, we discuss Cameron-Liebler sets in ${\cal O}_ν$, obtain several equivalent definitions and present some classification results.

Some remarks on the distribution of additive energy
The aim of this note is two-fold. In the first part of the paper we are going to investigate an inverse problem related to additive energy. In the second, we investigate how dense a subset of a finite structure can be for a given additive energy.

Rainbow variations on a theme by Mantel: extremal problems for Gallai colouring templates
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $\mathbf{G}:=(G_1, G_2, G_3)$ be a triple of graphs on the same vertex set $V$ of size $n$. A rainbow triangle in $\mathbf{G}$ is a triple of edges $(e_1, e_2, e_3)$ with $e_i\in G_i$ for each $i$ and $\{e_1, e_2, e_3\}$ forming a triangle in $V$. The triples $\mathbf{G}$ not containing rainbow triangles, also known as Gallai colouring templates, are a widely studied class of objects in extremal combinatorics. In the present work, we fully determine the set of edge densities $(α_1, α_2, α_3)$ such that if $\vert E(G_i)\vert> α_i n^2$ for each $i$ and $n$ is sufficiently large, then $\mathbf{G}$ must contain a rainbow triangle. This resolves a problem raised by Aharoni, DeVos, de la Maza, Montejanos and Šámal, generalises several previous results on extremal Gallai colouring templates, and proves a recent conjecture of Frankl, Györi, He, Lv, Salia, Tompkins, Varga and Zhu.
Minors, connectivity, and diameter in randomly perturbed sparse graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Extremal properties of sparse graphs, randomly perturbed by the binomial random graph are considered. It is known that every $n$-vertex graph $G$ contains a complete minor of order $Ω(n/α(G))$. We prove that adding $ξn$ random edges, where $ξ> 0$ is arbitrarily small yet fixed, to an $n$-vertex graph $G$ satisfying $α(G) \leq ζ(ξ)n$ asymptotically almost surely results in a graph containing a complete minor of order $\tilde Ω\left( n/\sqrt{α(G)}\right)$; this result is tight up to the implicit logarithmic terms. For complete topological minors, we prove that there exists a constant $C>0$ such that adding $C n$ random edges to a graph $G$ satisfying $δ(G) = ω(1)$, asymptotically almost surely results in a graph containing a complete topological minor of order $\tilde Ω(\min\{δ(G),\sqrt{n}\})$; this result is tight up to the implicit logarithmic terms. Finally, extending results of Bohman, Frieze, Krivelevich, and Martin for the dense case, we analyse the asymptotic behaviour of the vertex-connectivity and the diameter of randomly perturbed sparse graphs.

Graphs with total mutual-visibility number zero and total mutual-visibility in Cartesian products
Published • View Publication • BIB
If $G$ is a graph and $X\subseteq V(G)$, then $X$ is a total mutual-visibility set if every pair of vertices $x$ and $y$ of $G$ admits a shortest $x,y$-path $P$ with $V(P) \cap X \subseteq \{x,y\}$. The cardinality of a largest total mutual-visibility set of $G$ is the total mutual-visibility number $μ_{\rm t}(G)$ of $G$. Graphs with $μ_{\rm t}(G) = 0$ are characterized as the graphs in which no vertex is the central vertex of a convex $P_3$. The total mutual-visibility number of Cartesian products is bounded and several exact results proved. For instance, $μ_{\rm t}(K_n\,\square\, K_m) = \max\{n,m\}$ and $μ_{\rm t}(T\,\square\, H) = μ_{\rm t}(T)μ_{\rm t}(H)$, where $T$ is a tree and $H$ an arbitrary graph. It is also demonstrated that $μ_{\rm t}(G\,\square\, H)$ can be arbitrary larger than $μ_{\rm t}(G)μ_{\rm t}(H)$.

Inversion sequences avoiding the pattern 010
Inversion sequences are integer sequences $(σ_1, \dots, σ_n)$ such that $0 \leqslant σ_i < i$ for all $1 \leqslant i \leqslant n$. The study of pattern-avoiding inversion sequences began in two independent articles by Mansour-Shattuck and Corteel-Martinez-Savage-Weselcouch in 2015 and 2016. These two initial articles solved the enumeration of inversion sequences avoiding a single pattern for every pattern of length 3 except the patterns 010 and 100. The case 100 was recently solved by Mansour and Yildirim. We solve the final case by making use of a decomposition of inversion sequences avoiding the pattern 010. Our decomposition needs to take into account the maximal value, and the number of distinct values occurring in the inversion sequence. We then expand our method to solve the enumeration of inversion sequences avoiding the pairs of patterns $\{010, 000\}, \{010, 110\}, \{010, 120\}$, and the Wilf-equivalent pairs $\{010, 201\} \sim \{010, 210\}$. For each family of pattern-avoiding inversion sequences considered, its enumeration requires the enumeration of some family of constrained words avoiding the same patterns, a question which we also solve.

Classical continued fractions for some multivariate polynomials generalizing the Genocchi and median Genocchi numbers
Published • View Publication • BIB
A D-permutation is a permutation of $[2n]$ satisfying $2k-1 \le σ(2k-1)$ and $2k \ge σ(2k)$ for all $k$; they provide a combinatorial model for the Genocchi and median Genocchi numbers. We find Stieltjes-type and Thron-type continued fractions for some multivariate polynomials that enumerate D-permutations with respect to a very large (sometimes infinite) number of simultaneous statistics that measure cycle status, record status, crossings and nestings.

Two Ramsey-Turán numbers involving triangles
Published • View Publication • BIB
Given integers $p, q\ge2$, we say that a graph $G$ is $(K_p,K_q)$-free if there exists a red/blue edge coloring of $G$ such that it contains neither a red $K_p$ nor a blue $K_q$. Fix a function $f( n )$, the Ramsey-Turán number $RT( {n,p,q,f( n ))} $ is the maximum number of edges in an $n$-vertex $(K_p,K_q)$-free graph with independence number at most $f( n )$. For any $δ>0$, let $ρ(p, q,δ) = \mathop {\lim }\limits_{n \to \infty } \frac{RT(n,p, q,δn)}{n^2}$. We always call $ρ(p, q):= \mathop {\lim }\limits_{δ\to 0}ρ(p, q,δ)$ the Ramsey-Turán density of $K_p$ and $K_q$. In 1993, Erdős, Hajnal, Simonovits, Sós and Szemerédi proposed to determine the value of $ρ(3,q)$ for $q\ge3$, and they conjectured that for $q \ge 2$, $ρ\left( {3,2q - 1} \right) = \frac{1}{2}(1 - \frac{1}{r(3,q) - 1})$. Recently, Kim, Kim and Liu (2019) conjectured that for $q \ge 2$, $ρ( {3,2q } ) = \frac{1}{2}( 1 - \frac{1}{r( {3,q} )})$. Erdős et al. (1993) determined $ρ(3,q)$ for $q=3,4,5$ and $ρ(4,4)$. There is no progress on the Ramsey-Turán density $ρ(p, q)$ in the past thirty years. In this paper, we obtain $ρ(3,6)=\frac{5}{12}$ and $ρ(3,7)=\frac{7}{16}$. Moreover, we show that the corresponding asymptotically extremal structures are weakly stable, which answers a problem of Erdős et al. (1993) for the two cases.

Diameter of orientations of graphs with given order and number of blocks
Published • View Publication • BIB
A strong orientation of a graph $G$ is an assignment of a direction to each edge such that $G$ is strongly connected. The oriented diameter of $G$ is the smallest diameter among all strong orientations of $G$. A block of $G$ is a maximal connected subgraph of $G$ that has no cut vertex. A block graph is a graph in which every block is a clique. We show that every bridgeless graph of order $n$ containing $p$ blocks has an oriented diameter of at most $n-\lfloor \frac{p}{2} \rfloor$. This bound is sharp for all $n$ and $p$ with $p \geq 2$. As a corollary, we obtain a sharp upper bound on the oriented diameter in terms of order and number of cut vertices. We also show that the oriented diameter of a bridgeless block graph of order $n$ is bounded above by $\lfloor \frac{3n}{4} \rfloor$ if $n$ is even and $\lfloor \frac{3(n+1)}{4} \rfloor$ if $n$ is odd.

Polyharmonic Functions in the Quarter Plane
Published • View Publication • BIB
While discrete harmonic functions have been objects of interest for quite some time, this is not the case for discrete polyharmonic functions, as appear for instance in the asymptotics of path counting problems. In this article, a novel method to compute all discrete polyharmonic functions in the quarter plane for non-singular models with small steps and zero drift is proposed. In case of a finite group, an alternative method using decoupling functions is given, which often leads to a basis consisting of rational functions. In a similar manner one can obtain polyharmonic functions in the continuous setting, and convergence between the discrete and continuous cases is proven. Lastly, using a concrete example it is shown why the decoupling approach seems not to work in the infinite group case.

Spectral properties of $\mathcal{C}$-graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Assumed to be undirected, simple, and connected are all of the graphs in this study, and adjacency matrix $A$ serves as the associated matrix. In this paper we show that it is possible to relate a creation sequence for a type of cographs (we call it $\mathcal{C}$-graphs). Those cographs can be defined by a finite sequence of natural numbers. Using that sequence we obtain the inertia of the cograph under consideration. An extended eigenvalue-free set from $(-1,0)$ to $\big{[}\frac{-1-\sqrt{2}}{2}, -1)\cup (-1, 0) \cup (0, \frac{-1+\sqrt{2}}{2}α_{min}\big{]}$, (where $α_{min}\geq1$ is the smallest integer of the creation sequence) is obtained for the cographs under consideration. Additionally, an exact formula is found for the characteristic polynomial.

Universal characters twisted by roots of unity
Published in Algebr. Comb. 6 (2023), no. 6, 1653-1676 • View Publication • BIB
A classical result of Littlewood gives a factorisation for the Schur function at a set of variables "twisted" by a primitive $t$-th root of unity, characterised by the core and quotient of the indexing partition. While somewhat neglected, it has proved to be an important tool in the character theory of the symmetric group, the cyclic sieving phenomenon, plethysms of symmetric functions and more. Recently, similar factorisations for the characters of the groups $\mathrm{O}(2n,\mathbb{C})$, $\mathrm{Sp}(2n,\mathbb{C})$ and $\mathrm{SO}(2n+1,\mathbb{C})$ were obtained by Ayyer and Kumari. We lift these results to the level of universal characters, which has the benefit of making the proofs simpler and the structure of the factorisations more transparent. Our approach also allows for universal character extensions of some factorisations of a different nature originally discovered by Ciucu and Krattenthaler, and generalised by Ayyer and Behrend.

Random Recursive Hypergraphs
Published in J. Phys. A: Math. Theor. 56, 195001 (2023) • View Publication • BIB
Random recursive hypergraphs grow by adding, at each step, a vertex and an edge formed by joining the new vertex to a randomly chosen existing edge. The model is parameter-free, and several characteristics of emerging hypergraphs admit neat expressions via harmonic numbers, Bernoulli numbers, Eulerian numbers, and Stirling numbers of the first kind. Natural deformations of random recursive hypergraphs give rise to fascinating models of growing random hypergraphs.

An ODE approach to multiple choice polynomial programming
Published in East Asian Journal on Applied Mathematics 15 (2025) 1 • View Publication • BIB
We propose an ODE approach to solving multiple choice polynomial programming (MCPP) after assuming that the optimum point can be approximated by the expected value of so-called thermal equilibrium as usually did in simulated annealing. The explicit form of the feasible region and the affine property of the objective function are both fully exploited in transforming the MCPP problem into the ODE system. We also show theoretically that a local optimum of the former can be obtained from an equilibrium point of the latter. Numerical experiments on two typical combinatorial problems, MAX-$k$-CUT and the calculation of star discrepancy, demonstrate the validity of our ODE approach, and the resulting approximate solutions are of comparable quality to those obtained by the state-of-the-art heuristic algorithms but with much less cost. This paper also serves as the first attempt to use a continuous algorithm for approximating the star discrepancy.
