On the main distance-based entropies: the eccentricity- and Wiener-entropy

We define the Wiener-entropy, which is together with the eccentricity-entropy one of the most natural distance-based graph entropies. By deriving the (asymptotic) extremal behaviour, we conclude that the Wiener-entropy of graphs of a given order is more spread than is the case for the eccentricity-entropy. We solve $3$ conjectures on the eccentricity-entropy and give a conjecture on the Wiener-entropy related to some surprising behaviour on the graph minimizing it.
Guarantees for Spontaneous Synchronization on Random Geometric Graphs

The Kuramoto model is a classical mathematical model in the field of non-linear dynamical systems that describes the evolution of coupled oscillators in a network that may reach a synchronous state. The relationship between the network's topology and whether the oscillators synchronize is a central question in the field of synchronization, and random graphs are often employed as a proxy for complex networks. On the other hand, the random graphs on which the Kuramoto model is rigorously analyzed in the literature are homogeneous models and fail to capture the underlying geometric structure that appears in several examples.
In this work, we leverage tools from random matrix theory, random graphs, and mathematical statistics to prove that the Kuramoto model on a random geometric graph on the sphere synchronizes with probability tending to one as the number of nodes tends to infinity. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first rigorous result for the Kuramoto model on random geometric graphs.

We introduce generalized Hessenberg varieties and establish basic facts. We show that the Tymoczko action of the symmetric group $S_n$ on the cohomology of Hessenberg varieties extends to generalized Hessenberg varieties and that natural morphisms among them preserve the action. By analyzing natural morphisms and birational maps among generalized Hessenberg varieties, we give an elementary proof of the Shareshian-Wachs conjecture. Moreover we present a natural generalization of the Shareshian-Wachs conjecture that involves generalized Hessenberg varieties and provide an elementary proof. As a byproduct, we propose a generalized Stanley-Stembridge conjecture for weighted graphs. Our investigation into the birational geometry of generalized Hessenberg varieties enables us to modify them into much simpler varieties like projective spaces or permutohedral varieties by explicit sequences of blowups or projective bundle maps. Using this, we provide two algorithms to compute the $S_n$-representations on the cohomology of generalized Hessenberg varieties. As an application, we compute representations on the low degree cohomology of some Hessenberg varieties.
Moduli Spaces of One-Line Extensions of $(10_3)$ Configurations
Two line arrangements in $\mathbb{CP}^2$ can have different topological properties even if they are combinatorially isomorphic. Results by Dan Cohen and Suciu and by Randell show that a reducible moduli space under complex conjugation is a necessary condition.
We present a method to produce many examples of combinatorial line arrangements with a reducible moduli space obtained from a set of examples with irreducible moduli spaces.
In this paper, we determine the reducibility of the moduli spaces of a family of arrangements of 11 lines constructed by adding a line to one of the ten $(10_3)$ configurations. Out of the four hundred ninety-five combinatorial line arrangements in this family, ninety-five have a reducible moduli space, seventy-six of which are still reducible after the quotient by complex conjugation.

We prove that in any strongly fan-planar drawing of a graph G the edges can be colored with at most three colors, such that no two edges of the same color cross. This implies that the thickness of strongly fan-planar graphs is at most three. If G is bipartite, then two colors suffice to color the edges in this way.
Unified generating function for set partitions
In this work we define a unified generating functions for 9 different kinds of set partitions including cyclically ordered set partitions. Such generating function depends on 4 parameters. We consider property of this function and provide combinatorial explanation for polynomials generated by this function. Two new combinatorial statistics are defined and the explicit formulae given for coefficients of parametrized polynomials defined by the generating function.
Edge-coloured graph homomorphisms, paths, and duality
We present a edge-coloured analogue of the duality theorem for transitive tournaments and directed paths. Given a edge-coloured path $P$ whose edges alternate blue and red, we construct a edge-coloured graph $D$ so that for any edge-coloured graph $G$ $$ P \to G \Leftrightarrow G \not\to D. $$ The duals are simple to construct, in particular $|V(D)|=|V(P)|-1$.
On the consistency of score sheets of a round-robin football tournament
In this paper we introduce the submonoids $\mathscr{R}_n$, resp. $\mathscr{C}_n$, of the monoid $\mathscr{M}_n$ of ordered score sheets of a robin-round tournament played by $n$ teams for which the order is preserved after the leader team is disqualified, resp. all principal submatrices preserve the given ordering. We study (using both theoretical and computational methods) the most important invariants of these monoids, namely the Hilbert basis, the multiplicity, the Hilbert series and the Hilbert function. In particular we give a general description of the Hilbert basis of $\mathscr{R}_n$ and we show that $\mathscr{C}_n$ is Gorenstein for $n>2$.

Let ${\bf a}=(a_1, a_2, \ldots, a_n)$ and ${\bf e}=(e_1, e_2, \ldots, e_n)$ be real sequences. Denote by $M_{{\bf e}\rightarrow {\bf a}}$ the $(n+1)\times(n+1)$ matrix whose $(m,k)$ entry ($m, k \in \{0,\ldots, n\}$) is the coefficient of the polynomial $(x-a_1)\cdots(x-a_k)$ in the expansion of $(x-e_1)\cdots(x-e_m)$ as a linear combination of the polynomials $1, x-a_1, \ldots, (x-a_1)\cdots(x-a_m)$. By appropriate choice of ${\bf a}$ and ${\bf e}$ the matrix $M_{{\bf e}\rightarrow {\bf a}}$ can encode many familiar doubly-indexed combinatorial sequences, such as binomial coefficients, Stirling numbers of both kinds, Lah numbers and central factorial numbers.
In all four of these examples, $M_{{\bf e}\rightarrow {\bf a}}$ enjoys the property of total non-negativity -- the determinants of all its square submatrices are non-negative. This leads to a natural question: when, in general, is $M_{{\bf e}\rightarrow {\bf a}}$ totally non-negative?
Galvin and Pacurar found a simple condition on ${\bf e}$ that characterizes total non-negativity of $M_{{\bf e}\rightarrow {\bf a}}$ when ${\bf a}$ is non-decreasing. Here we fully extend this result. For arbitrary real sequences ${\bf a}$ and ${\bf e}$, we give a condition that can be checked in $O(n^2)$ time that determines whether $M_{{\bf e}\rightarrow {\bf a}}$ is totally non-negative. When $M_{{\bf e}\rightarrow {\bf a}}$ is totally non-negative, we witness this with a planar network whose weights are non-negative and whose path matrix is $M_{{\bf e}\rightarrow {\bf a}}$. When it is not, we witness this with an explicit negative minor.
Elementary Proofs of Infinite Families of Congruences for Merca's Cubic Partitions

Recently, using modular forms and Smoot's {\tt Mathematica} implementation of Radu's algorithm for proving partition congruences, Merca proved the following two congruences: For all $n\geq 0,$ \begin{align*} A(9n+5) & \equiv 0 \pmod{3}, \\ A(27n+26) & \equiv 0 \pmod{3}. \end{align*} Here $A(n)$ is closely related to the function which counts the number of {\it cubic partitions}, partitions wherein the even parts are allowed to appear in two different colors. Indeed, $A(n)$ is defined as the difference between the number of cubic partitions of $n$ into an even numbers of parts and the number of cubic partitions of $n$ into an odd numbers of parts.
In this brief note, we provide elementary proofs of these two congruences via classical generating function manipulations. We then prove two infinite families of non--nested Ramanujan--like congruences modulo 3 satisfied by $A(n)$ wherein Merca's original two congruences serve as the initial members of each family.
A note on the edge choosability of $K_{5}$-minor free graphs
For a planar graph $G$, Borodin stated that $G$ is $(Δ+1)$-edge-choosable if $Δ\geq9$ and later Bonamy showed that $G$ is $9$-edge-choosable if $Δ=8$. At the same time, Borodin et al. proved that $G$ is $Δ$-edge-choosable if $Δ\geq12$. In the paper, we extend these results to $K_5$-minor free graphs.
Resolving Matrix Spencer Conjecture Up to Poly-logarithmic Rank

We give a simple proof of the matrix Spencer conjecture up to poly-logarithmic rank: given symmetric $d \times d$ matrices $A_1,\ldots,A_n$ each with $\|A_i\|_{\mathsf{op}} \leq 1$ and rank at most $n/\log^3 n$, one can efficiently find $\pm 1$ signs $x_1,\ldots,x_n$ such that their signed sum has spectral norm $\|\sum_{i=1}^n x_i A_i\|_{\mathsf{op}} = O(\sqrt{n})$. This result also implies a $\log n - Ω( \log \log n)$ qubit lower bound for quantum random access codes encoding $n$ classical bits with advantage $\gg 1/\sqrt{n}$.
Our proof uses the recent refinement of the non-commutative Khintchine inequality in [Bandeira, Boedihardjo, van Handel, 2022] for random matrices with correlated Gaussian entries.

Moreover, we study the empirical root distributions of limit polynomials obtained through the law of large numbers of finite free multiplicative convolution when their degree tends to infinity.
Some considerations on the maximal safety distance in a graph

The work in this paper is motivated by I. Banič's and A. Taranenko's recent paper, where they introduced a new notion, the span of a graph. Their goal was to solve the problem of keeping a safety distance while two actors are moving through a graph and they present three different types of graph spans, depending on the movement rules. We observe the same goal, but give a different approach to that problem by directly defining the maximal safety distance for different movement rules two actors can take. This allowed us to solve several problems, prove some relations between different graph spans and calculate the span values for some classes of graphs.
Maximal degree subposets of $ν$-Tamari lattices

In this paper, we study two different subposets of the $ν$-Tamari lattice: one in which all elements have maximal in-degree and one in which all elements have maximal out-degree. The maximal in-degree and maximal out-degree of a $ν$-Dyck path turns out to be the size of the maximal staircase shape path that fits weakly above $ν$. For $m$-Dyck paths of height $n$, we further show that the maximal out-degree poset is poset isomorphic to the $ν$-Tamari lattice of $(m-1)$-Dyck paths of height $n$, and the maximal in-degree poset is poset isomorphic to the $(m-1)$-Dyck paths of height $n$ together with a greedy order. We show these two isomorphisms and give some properties on $ν$-Tamari lattices along the way.

Since the 1974 paper by Peskine and Szpiro, liaison theory via complete intersections, and more generally via Gorenstein varieties, has become a standard tool kit in commutative algebra and algebraic geometry, allowing to compare algebraic features of linked varieties. In this paper we develop a liaison theory via quasi-Gorenstein varieties, a much broader class than Gorenstein varieties: it is not misleading to think that quasi-Gorenstein rings are to Gorenstein rings as manifolds are to spheres. As applications, we derive a connectedness property of quasi-Gorenstein subspace arrangements generalizing previous results by Benedetti and the second author, and we deduce the classical topological Lefschetz duality via the Stanley-Reisner correspondence.
An asymptotic resolution of a conjecture of Szemerédi and Petruska
Consider a $3$-uniform hypergraph of order $n$ with clique number $k$ such that the intersection of all its $k$-cliques is empty. Szemerédi and Petruska proved $n\leq 8m^2+3m$, for fixed $m=n-k$, and they conjectured the sharp bound $n \leq {m+2 \choose 2}$. This problem is known to be equivalent to determining the maximum order of a $τ$-critical $3$-uniform hypergraph with transversal number $m$ (details may also be found in a companion paper: arXiv:2204.02859). The best known bound, $n\leq \frac{3}{4}m^2+m+1$, was obtained by Tuza using the machinery of $τ$-critical hypergraphs. Here we propose an alternative approach, a combination of the iterative decomposition process introduced by Szemerédi and Petruska with the skew version of Bollobás's theorem on set pair systems. The new approach improves the bound to $n\leq {m+2 \choose 2} + O(m^{{5}/{3}})$, resolving the conjecture asymptotically.
Distribution of similar configurations in subsets of $\mathbb{F}_q^d$

Let $\mathbb{F}_q$ be a finite field of order $q$ and $E$ be a set in $\mathbb{F}_q^d$. The distance set of $E$ is defined by $Δ(E):=\{\lVert x-y \rVert :x,y\in E\}$, where $\lVert α\rVert=α_1^2+\dots+α_d^2$. Iosevich, Koh and Parshall (2018) proved that if $d\geq 2$ is even and $|E|\geq 9q^{d/2}$, then $$\mathbb{F}_q= \frac{Δ(E)}{Δ(E)}=\left\{\frac{a}{b}: a\in Δ(E),\ b\in Δ(E)\setminus\{0\} \right\}.$$ In other words, for each $r\in \mathbb{F}_q^*$ there exist $(x,y)\in E^2$ and $(x',y')\in E^2$ such that $\lVert x-y\rVert\neq0$ and $\lVert x'-y' \rVert=r\lVert x-y\rVert$.
Geometrically, this means that if the size of $E$ is large, then for any given $r \in \mathbb{F}_q^*$ we can find a pair of edges in the complete graph $K_{|E|}$ with vertex set $E$ such that one of them is dilated by $r\in \mathbb{F}_q^*$ with respect to the other. A natural question arises whether it is possible to generalize this result to arbitrary subgraphs of $K_{|E|}$ with vertex set $E$ and this is the goal of this paper.
In this paper, we solve this problem for $k$-paths $(k\geq 2)$, simplexes and 4-cycles. We are using a mix of tools from different areas such as enumerative combinatorics, group actions and Turán type theorems.
An involution on restricted Laguerre histories and its applications

Laguerre histories (restricted or not) are certain weighted Motzkin paths with two types of level steps. They are, on one hand, in natural bijection with the set of permutations, and on the other hand, yield combinatorial interpretations for the moments of Laguerre polynomials via Flajolet's combinatorial theory of continued fractions. In this paper, we first introduce a reflection-like involution on restricted Laguerre histories. Then, we demonstrate its power by composing this involution with three bijections due to Fran\ccon-Viennot, Foata-Zeilberger, and Yan-Zhou-Lin, respectively. A host of equidistribution results involving various (multiset-valued) permutation statistics follow from these applications. As byproducts, seven apparently new Mahonian statistics present themselves; new interpretations of known Mahonian statistics are discovered as well. Finally, in our effort to show the interconnections between these Mahonian statistics, we are naturally led to a new link between the variant Yan-Zhou-Lin bijection and the Kreweras complement.
On a class of probabilistic cellular automata with size-$3$ neighbourhood and their applications in percolation games

Different versions of percolation games on $\mathbb{Z}^{2}$, with parameters $p$ and $q$ that indicate, respectively, the probability with which a site in $\mathbb{Z}^{2}$ is labeled a trap and the probability with which it is labeled a target, are shown to have probability $0$ of culminating in draws when $p+q > 0$. We show that, for fixed $p$ and $q$, the probability of draw in each of these games is $0$ if and only if a certain $1$-dimensional probabilistic cellular automaton (PCA) $F_{p,q}$ with a size-$3$ neighbourhood is ergodic. This allows us to conclude that $F_{p,q}$ is ergodic whenever $p+q > 0$, thereby rigorously establishing ergodicity for a considerable class of PCAs.
