Nonvanishing derived limits from $\clubsuit$-type principles
Combinatorial set theory provides several tools to study derived limits of certain inverse systems of abelian groups. Most known nonvanishing results for $\lim^n$ with $n>1$ depend on some guessing principles of the form $\mathrm{w}\lozenge(S)$ called weak diamonds. In this paper, we explore some applications of the guessing principle $\clubsuit(S)$ and its weakenings instead.
Non-attacking rook placements on crossword grids
We introduce the notion of a non-attacking rook placement on a crossword grid. A crossword grid is a collection of white squares (which comprise across and down words) and black squares (which separate the words), and a complete non-attacking rook placement on such a grid is a subset of white squares which intersects every across and every down word exactly once. We prove an upper bound on the number of rook placements that a general grid can admit. We then study sparse grids in which no two black squares share an edge and show that rook placements on certain sparse grids correspond bijectively to alternating sign matrices with prescribed $-1$ entries. Specializing further to permutation grids, we prove that every permutation grid admits at least one rook placement, and characterize the permutations whose grids admit exactly one placement in terms of the Robinson--Schensted correspondence. Throughout, we pose a variety of conjectures and open questions.
Confirmation of the Daykin-Frankl Conjecture
In 1983, Daykin and Frankl conjectured that if $P$ is a convex subset of $Q_n$, then it contains at least $|P|\binom{n}{\lfloor n/2\rfloor}2^{-n}$ pairwise incomparable elements.
We verify and communicate an LLM-generated proof of this conjecture.
On the reconstruction of $n$-quasigroups of order $4$ and upper bounds on their number
(This is a reprint of the thesis published in the Transactions of the Conference Devoted to the 90th Anniversary Of Alexei A. Lyapunov, Novosibirsk, October 8-12, 2001, pages 323-327).
The number of ways for partial $n$-quasigroups of order $4$ to be extended to $n$-quasigroups is investigated. Upper bounds on the number of $n$-quasigroups of order $4$ are obtained. The asymptotic $3^{n+1}2^{2^n+1}$ of that number is established.
On uniquely colorable Cayley graphs
We resolve two open problems regarding uniquely colorable Cayley graphs posed by Klotz and Sander (2017). First, we construct an infinite family of uniquely 3-colorable integral circulant graphs with a clique number of 2. This provides a negative answer to Problem 3.6, which asks whether every uniquely colorable circulant graph satisfies $χ(G) = ω(G)$. Because verifying unique colorability inherently relies on the exact independence number, we demonstrate that traditional spectral bounds fail to tightly capture this parameter, necessitating a rigorous combinatorial proof based on exact structural isomorphisms. Second, we establish a general algebraic construction proving the existence of uniquely colorable Cayley graphs over nonabelian groups whose color classes are left cosets of strictly distinct subgroups. By utilizing right-coset partitions of non-normal subgroups, this result provides a definitive affirmative answer to Problem 2.4.
Lecture hall polytopes and Lakshmibai-Seshadri paths
Using a bijection between the lattice points in a lecture hall polytope and Lakshimibai-Seshadri (L-S) paths, we prove the Koszul property of lecture hall polytopes in complete generality, and give new proofs for their Integral Decomposition Property and for a criterion on Gorenstein property.
Stability of maximal relative projection constants
For positive integers $n\ge r$, let $λ(r,n)$ denote the \emph{maximal relative projection constant} of $r$-dimensional subspaces of $\ell_\infty^n$ and $λ(r)$ denote the \emph{maximal absolute projection constant}, respectively. It is known that for any fixed $r$, $λ(r,n)$ is a non-decreasing sequence with limit $λ(r)$ as $n\to \infty$. A natural question is whether $λ(r,n)$ stabilizes at $λ(r)$ for some $n>r$. We prove that for any fixed $r$, \[λ(r,n)=λ(r) \qquad \text{for every}\qquad n\ge 2^{r}\binom{r+1}{2}.\] This answers a question of Basso. The technique used is of independent interest.
An Exact Combinatorial Branch-and-Bound Algorithm for the Job Sequencing and Tool Switching Problem
The Job Sequencing and Tool Switching Problem (SSP) is a well-known combinatorial optimization problem arising in the context of flexible manufacturing. Since the seminal work of Tang and Denardo (1988), the SSP has received significant attention in the literature, leading to the development of numerous exact and heuristic approaches. Despite these efforts, several benchmark instances proposed decades ago and containing only 20 jobs have remained unsolved to proven optimality. In this work, we propose an exact algorithm for the SSP, namely the Combinatorial Branch-and-Bound (C-B\&B) algorithm, which combines two distinct branch-and-bound algorithms, each introducing novel features compared with the existing literature. The former relies on a new branching scheme designed to reduce the size of the implicit enumeration tree, together with a collection of new bounding functions. The latter builds on the branching scheme introduced by Laporte et al. (2004) and strengthens it with a new bounding function and two dominance rules. Within C-B\&B, these exact algorithms are complemented by a preprocessing phase that incorporates a new branch-and-bound-based heuristic capable of rapidly generating a high-quality initial incumbent solution. Extensive computational experiments show that C-B\&B represents a strong breakthrough over previously published approaches, proving optimality for more instances with significantly less computational effort and closing several benchmark instances that have remained open for decades.
Rainbow Berge Hamiltonicity in edge-colored random $k$-uniform hypergraphs
Let $H \sim H^{k}_c(n,p)$ be an edge-colored random $k$-uniform hypergraph on the vertex set $[n]$, where each edge $e \in \binom{[n]}{k}$ is included independently with probability $p$ and is uniformly and independently assigned a color from the color set $[c]$. For $k = 2$, Ferber and Krivelevich (2016) established that if $c = (1+o(1))n$ and $p = (\log n + \log \log n + ω(n))/n$, then with high probability the edge-colored random graph $H \sim H^2_c(n,p)$ contains a rainbow Hamilton Berge cycle. Subsequently, Bal, Berkowitz, Devlin, and Schacht (2021) determined the threshold for the appearance of a (non-rainbow) Hamilton Berge cycle in random $k$-uniform hypergraphs. In this paper, we generalize the results to all integers $k \ge 3$. We prove that if $c = (1+o(1))n$ and $p = (k-1)! \frac{\log n + \log\log n + ω(n)}{n^{k-1}}$, then with high probability $H \sim H^{k}_c(n,p)$ contains a rainbow Hamilton Berge cycle. Furthermore, both conditions on $c$ and $p$ are asymptotically tight.

New Upper bounds on the Mondrian Art Problem
We present a new upper bound on the defect of the Mondrian Art Problem. The Mondrian Art Problem asks for a partition of an $n \times n$ square with rectangles of distinct dimensions such that the difference (defect) between the largest and smallest rectangle areas is minimized. We prove that for any $n \times n$ square, there exists a partition with defect $O(n^{5/6})$, improving upon the previously conjectured $O (n/\log n)$ upper bound. We also implement an algorithm that provides empirical evidence supporting our theoretical bound.
Optimal girth-dependent bounds for the Bethe approximation of the permanent
For an $n\times n$ nonnegative matrix $A$, the Bethe permanent, which is computable in deterministic polynomial time, satisfies the tight universal comparison \[\operatorname{Bethe}(A) \leq \operatorname{per}(A) \leq 2^{n/2}\operatorname{Bethe}(A).\] The lower bound, due to Gurvits, is attained on forests. The upper bound, due to Anari and Rezaei, is attained by the adjacency matrix of a disjoint union of $4$-cycles.
Confirming a conjecture of Anari, we provide an optimal girth-dependent refinement of the above comparison. More precisely, we show that if the bipartite support graph of $A$ has girth at least an even integer $g \geq 4$, then \[\operatorname{Bethe}(A) \leq \operatorname{per}(A) \leq 2^{2n/g}\operatorname{Bethe}(A).\] The upper bound is attained by the adjacency matrix of a disjoint union of $g$-cycles.
Measures on partial orders
We determine the measures (in the sense of Harman--Snowden) on the Fraïssé class of partially ordered sets: the space of measures is a union of a plane, eight lines, and 15 isolated points. This is the first case where the space is not equidimensional, and the first primitive case in which it has dimension at least two.

Sparse $k$-AP Covering Sets and the Arithmetic Kakeya Conjecture
A subset $A\subseteq \mathbb N_0$ is $k$-AP covering if there exists a constant $n_0$ such that for every integer $x>n_0$, there exists $d\in\mathbb N_0$ such that $x-d, x-2d,\dots,x-(k-1)d$ are all in $A$. Disproving a conjecture of Kiss, Sándor, and Yang, we prove that for every integer $k\geq 6$, there exists a constant $\varepsilon=\varepsilon_k>0$ and a $k$-AP covering set $A$ such that $|A\cap \{0,1,\dots,n\}| < n^{\frac{k-2}{k-1}-\varepsilon}$ for all sufficiently large $n$. We also relate this problem to the Arithmetic Kakeya Conjecture by Katz and Tao.
Lower and upper bounds of Schur characters
Characterizations of lower and upper bounds for dual characters of flagged Weyl modules have attracted considerable interest. In this paper, we establish explicit pattern avoidance characterizations for lower and upper bounds of Schur characters, namely, the dual characters of Weyl modules associated with arbitrary diagrams. This setting extends the corresponding extremal problems for dual characters of flagged Weyl modules and includes skew Schur polynomials and, through Rothe diagrams, Stanley symmetric functions. Specifically, for a permutation $w$, we show that the Stanley symmetric function $F_w$ attains the lower bound if and only if $w$ avoids $321,2143,2413,3142$, and $3412$, and attains the upper bound if and only if $w$ avoids $312$ and $321$.
Logarithmic basis number of graphs
The basis number $\mathrm{bn}(G)$ of a graph $G$ is the minimum edge-congestion of a basis of its cycle space. We prove that every finite $n$-vertex multigraph satisfies \[
\mathrm{bn}(G)=O(\log n), \] resolving, for simple graphs, a question of Bazargani, Biedl, Bose, Maheshwari and Miraftab, subsequently stated as a conjecture by Miraftab, Morin and Yuditsky. The argument also yields the cycle-rank refinement \[
\mathrm{bn}(G)=O(\log β(G)), \] where $β(G)$ is the dimension of the cycle space, and a reduction of Lehner and Miraftab, based on a theorem of Richter and Shank, then gives \[
\mathrm{bn}(G)=O(\log g) \] for graphs of Euler genus $g$. These orders are best possible.
On the vertex connectivity of weakly zero-divisor graph of commutative rings
The weakly zero-divisor graph $WΓ(R)$ of a commutative ring $R$ is the simple undirected graph whose vertices are nonzero zero-divisors of $R$, and two distinct vertices $x$, $y$ are adjacent if and only if there $w\in {\rm ann}(x)$ and $ z\in {\rm ann}(y)$ such that $wz =0$. In this paper, we obtain the vertex connectivity of $WΓ(R)$, where $R$ is an Artinian ring or reduced ring. Indeed, for these rings, we prove that the vertex connectivity of $WΓ(R)$ is equal to its minimum degree. This paper also characterizes all the vertices of minimum degree of $WΓ(R)$.
Helly-Type Theorems for Splitting Point Sets
Let $0 < α\leq 1/2$. We say that a finite point set $P$ in $\mathbb{R}^d$ is $α$-split by a hyperplane $h$ if each of the closed half-spaces determined by $h$, contains at least $α|P|$ of the points of $P$. We further say $P$ is $α$-split by a $k$-dimensional flat $τ$ if $P$ is $α$-split by any hyperplane through $τ$. In the standard notation (which coincides with Tukey depth for $k= 0$), the $k$-flat $τ$ has depth $α$ with respect to $P$.
We establish interesting Helly-type theorems for splitting families of finite point sets in $\mathbb{R}^d$. Unlike the classical sufficient Helly-type criteria for transversals to families of compact convex sets, which exist only for point and hyperplanes, our results extend to splitting families of point sets by collections of $k$-flats of arbitrary dimensionality $ 0 \leq k \leq d-1$.
Neumaier graphs of coherent rank five
We construct an infinite family of Neumaier graphs of coherent rank five, answering the existence question at the smallest possible coherent rank beyond the strongly regular case. For every prime power $q\geqslant7$ with $q\equiv3\pmod4$, set $n=q+1$. Each graph in our construction has precisely five distinct eigenvalues, Neumaier parameters \[
\left(
n(n-1)(n-3),
\frac{n^2(n-3)}2,
\frac{n(n^2-n-8)}4;
\frac{(n-2)^2}{2},
(n-1)(n-3)
\right), \] and its adjacency matrix lies in the Bose--Mesner algebra of the four-class association scheme of Holzmann, Kharaghani, and Suda. Paley Hadamard matrices and Desarguesian mutually orthogonal Latin squares yield an infinite family whose smallest member has parameters $(280,160,96;18,35)$.
Recurrences for permutations with long increasing subsequences
We prove two simple bivariate recurrences for the number of permutations with a long increasing subsequence. The two recurrences imply D-finiteness of the sequence in a certain range. As a consequence, we also obtain a proof of a conjecture posed by Kauers and Koutschan in 2023.
An $n(\log n)^{o(1)}$ bound for nested cycles without geometric crossings
Cycles $C_1,\ldots,C_k$ in a graph are called nested without geometric crossings if they are pairwise edge-disjoint, $V(C_k)\subseteq\cdots\subseteq V(C_1)$, and each pair of consecutive cycles induces the same cyclic order on the vertices of the inner cycle, up to reversal. Let $f_k(n)$ be the least number of edges that forces such a family in every $n$-vertex graph. Answering a question of Erdős for two cycles, Gil Fernández, Kim, Kim and Liu proved that $f_2(n)=O(n)$ and asked whether $f_k(n)=O_k(n)$ for every fixed $k$. Xu, Zeng and Zhang recently obtained the first general bound, $f_k(n)=O_k\bigl(n(\log n)^{k-1}(\log\log n)^{k-3}\bigr)$ for every fixed $k\ge3$.
We prove that, for every fixed $k\ge3$, \[f_k(n)=O_k\!\left(n\,\frac{(\log\log n)^2}{\log\log\log n}\right), \] so in particular $f_k(n)\le n(\log n)^{o(1)}$, where the $n$-dependent iterated-logarithmic factor has the same form for every fixed number of cycles.
