Non-Geometric Cospectral Mates of Line Graphs with a Linear Representation
Published • View Publication • BIB
For an incidence geometry $\mathcal{G} = (\mathcal{P}, \mathcal{L}, \text{I})$ with a linear representation $\mathcal{T}_n^*(\mathcal{K})$, we apply WQH switching to construct a non-geometric graph $Γ'$ cospectral with the line graph $Γ$ of $\mathcal{G}$. As an application, we show that for $h \geq 2$ and $0 < m < h$, there are strongly regular graphs with parameters $(v, k, λ, μ) = (2^{2h} (2^{m+h}+2^m-2^h), 2^h (2^h+1)(2^m-1), 2^h (2^{m+1}-3), 2^h (2^m-1))$ which are not point graphs of partial geometries of order $(s,t,α) = ((2^h+1)(2^m-1), 2^h-1, 2^m-1)$.

Approximate Sampling of Graphs with Near-$P$-stable Degree Intervals
Published in Ann. Comb. (2023) • View Publication • BIB
The approximate uniform sampling of graph realizations with a given degree sequence is an everyday task in several social science, computer science, engineering etc. projects. One approach is using Markov chains. The best available current result about the well-studied switch Markov chain is that it is rapidly mixing on P-stable degree sequences (see DOI:10.1016/j.ejc.2021.103421). The switch Markov chain does not change any degree sequence. However, there are cases where degree intervals are specified rather than a single degree sequence. (A natural scenario where this problem arises is in hypothesis testing on social networks that are only partially observed.) Rechner, Strowick, and Müller-Hannemann introduced in 2018 the notion of degree interval Markov chain which uses three (separately well-studied) local operations (switch, hinge-flip and toggle), and employing on degree sequence realizations where any two sequences under scrutiny have very small coordinate-wise distance. Recently Amanatidis and Kleer published a beautiful paper (arXiv:2110.09068), showing that the degree interval Markov chain is rapidly mixing if the sequences are coming from a system of very thin intervals which are centered not far from a regular degree sequence. In this paper we extend substantially their result, showing that the degree interval Markov chain is rapidly mixing if the intervals are centred at P-stable degree sequences.

Inductive Freeness of Ziegler's Canonical Multiderivations
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $\mathcal A$ be a free hyperplane arrangement. In 1989, Ziegler showed that the restriction $\mathcal A''$ of $\mathcal A$ to any hyperplane endowed with the natural multiplicity $κ$ is then a free multiarrangement $(\mathcal A'',κ)$. The aim of this paper is to prove an analogue of Ziegler's theorem for the stronger notion of inductive freeness: if $\mathcal A$ is inductively free, then so is the multiarrangement $(\mathcal A'',κ)$. In a related result we derive that if a deletion $\mathcal A'$ of $\mathcal A$ is free and the corresponding restriction $\mathcal A''$ is inductively free, then so is $(\mathcal A'',κ)$ -- irrespective of the freeness of $\mathcal A$. In addition, we show counterparts of the latter kind for additive and recursive freeness.

A random Hall-Paige conjecture
A complete mapping of a group $G$ is a bijection $φ\colon G\to G$ such that $x\mapsto xφ(x)$ is also bijective. Hall and Paige conjectured in 1955 that a finite group $G$ has a complete mapping whenever $\prod_{x\in G} x$ is the identity in the abelianization of $G$. This was confirmed in 2009 by Wilcox, Evans, and Bray with a proof using the classification of finite simple groups. \par In this paper, we give a combinatorial proof of a far-reaching generalisation of the Hall-Paige conjecture for large groups. We show that for random-like and equal-sized subsets $A,B,C$ of a group $G$, there exists a bijection $φ\colon A\to B$ such that $x\mapsto xφ(x)$ is a bijection from $A$ to $C$ whenever $\prod_{a\in A} a \prod_{b\in B} b=\prod_{c\in C} c$ in the abelianization of $G$. We use this statement as a black-box to settle the following old problems in combinatorial group theory for large groups. (1) We characterise sequenceable groups, that is, groups which admit a permutation $π$ of their elements such that the partial products $π_1$, $π_1π_2$, $π_1π_2\cdots π_n$ are all distinct. This resolves a problem of Gordon from 1961 and confirms conjectures made by several authors, including Keedwell's 1981 conjecture that all large non-abelian groups are sequenceable. We also characterise the related $R$-sequenceable groups, addressing a problem of Ringel from 1974. (2) We confirm in a strong form a conjecture of Snevily from 1999 by characterising large subsquares of multiplication tables of finite groups that admit transversals. Previously, this characterisation was known only for abelian groups of odd order (by a combination of papers by Alon and Dasgupta-Károlyi-Serra-Szegedy and Arsovski).

On state transfer in Cayley graphs for abelian groups
Published in Quantum Information Processing 22, 8 (2023) • View Publication • BIB
In this paper, we characterize perfect state transfer in Cayley graphs for abelian groups that have a cyclic Sylow-2-subgroup. This generalizes a result of Bašić from 2013 where he provides a similar characterization for Cayley graphs of cyclic groups.

Sharp inequalities for discrete and continuous multi-tiling, using the Bombieri-Siegel approach
Given a finite subset $F$ of integer points in $\mathbb Z^d$, it is of interest to seek conditions on $F$ that allow it to multi-tile $\mathbb Z^d$ by translations. To this end, we give a discretized version of the Bombieri-Siegel formula, which represents a finite sum of discrete covariograms in terms of Fourier transforms. As a consequence, we arrive at a new equivalent condition for multi-tiling $\mathbb Z^d$ by translating $F$ with a fixed integer sublattice. In the continuous case, we study lattice sums of the cross covariogram for any two bounded sets $A, B\subset \mathbb R^d$, and we prove a refined continuous version of the classical Bombieri-Siegel formula from the geometry of numbers. To achieve this goal, we use a variant of the Poisson Summation formula, adapted for continuous functions of compact support. As an application of this refined Bombieri-Siegel formula, a new characterization of multi-tilings of Euclidean space by translations of a compact set by using a lattice is given. One consequence is a novel spectral formula for the volume of any bounded measurable set. Another consequence is a novel spectral formula for the product of the volumes of any two bounded measurable sets.

Coloring ($P_5$, kite)-free graphs
Let $P_n$ and $K_n$ denote the induced path and complete graph on $n$ vertices, respectively. The {\em kite} is the graph obtained from a $P_4$ by adding a vertex and making it adjacent to all vertices in the $P_4$ except one vertex with degree 1. A graph is ($P_5$, kite)-free if it has no induced subgraph isomorphic to a $P_5$ or a kite. For a graph $G$, the chromatic number of $G$ (denoted by $χ(G)$) is the minimum number of colors needed to color the vertices of $G$ such that no two adjacent vertices receive the same color, and the clique number of $G$ is the size of a largest clique in $G$. Here, we are interested in the class of ($P_5$, kite)-free graphs with small clique number. It is known that every ($P_5$,~kite, $K_3$)-free graph $G$ satisfies $χ(G)\leq 3$, every ($P_5$,~kite, $K_4$)-free graph $G$ satisfies $χ(G)\leq 4$, and that every ($P_5$,~kite, $K_5$)-free graph $G$ satisfies $χ(G)\leq 6$. In this paper, we showed the following: $\bullet$ Every ($P_5$, kite, $K_6$)-free graph $G$ satisfies $χ(G)\leq 7$. $\bullet$ Every ($P_5$, kite, $K_7$)-free graph $G$ satisfies $χ(G)\leq 9$. We also give examples to show that the above bounds are tight.

Quantum State Transfer on Neighborhood Corona of Two Graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Given two graphs $G_{1}$ of order $n_{1}$ and $G_{2}$, the neighborhood corona of $G_{1}$ and $G_{2}$, denoted by $G_{1}\bigstar G_{2}$, is the graph obtained by taking one copy of $G_{1}$ and taking $n_{1}$ copies of $G_{2}$, in the meanwhile, linking all the neighbors of the $i$-th vertex of $G_{1}$ with all vertices of the $i$-th copy of $G_{2}$. In our work, we give some conditions that $G_{1}\bigstar G_{2}$ is not periodic. Furthermore, we demonstrate some sufficient conditions for $G_{1}\bigstar G_{2}$ having no perfect state transfer. Some examples are provided to explain our results. In addition, for the reason that the graph admitting perfect state transfer is rare, we also consider pretty good state transfer on neighborhood corona of two graphs. We show some sufficient conditions for $G_{1}\bigstar G_{2}$ admitting pretty good state transfer.

Rainbow clique subdivisions

We show that for any integer $t \ge 2$, every properly edge colored $n$-vertex graph with average degree at least $(\log n)^{2+o(1)}$ contains a rainbow subdivision of a complete graph of size $t$. Note that this bound is within $(\log n)^{1+o(1)}$ factor of the lower bound. This also implies a result on the rainbow Turán number of cycles.

MAT-free graphic arrangements and a characterization of strongly chordal graphs by edge-labeling
Published • View Publication • BIB
Ideal subarrangements of a Weyl arrangement are proved to be free by the multiple addition theorem (MAT) due to Abe-Barakat-Cuntz-Hoge-Terao (2016). They form a significant class among Weyl subarrangements that are known to be free so far. The concept of MAT-free arrangements was introduced recently by Cuntz-M{ü}cksch (2020) to capture a core of the MAT, which enlarges the ideal subarrangements from the perspective of freeness. The aim of this paper is to give a precise characterization of the MAT-freeness in the case of type $A$ Weyl subarrangements (or graphic arrangements). It is known that the ideal and free graphic arrangements correspond to the unit interval and chordal graphs respectively. We prove that a graphic arrangement is MAT-free if and only if the underlying graph is strongly chordal. In particular, it affirmatively answers a question of Cuntz-M{ü}cksch that MAT-freeness is closed under taking localization in the case of graphic arrangements.

Lower bounds for the Turán densities of daisies
Published • View Publication • BIB
For integers $r \geq 3$ and $t \geq 2$, an $r$-uniform $t$-daisy $\mathcal{D}^t_r$ is a family of $\binom{2t}{t}$ $r$-element sets of the form $$\{S \cup T \ : T\subset U, \ |T|=t \}$$ for some sets $S,U$ with $|S|=r-t$, $|U|=2t$ and $S \cap U = \emptyset$. It was conjectured by Bollobás, Leader and Malvenuto (and independently Bukh) that the Turán densities of $t$-daisies satisfy $\lim\limits_{r \to \infty} π(\mathcal{D}_r^t) = 0$ for all $t \geq 2$; this has become a well-known problem, and it is still open for all values of $t$. In this paper, we give lower bounds for the Turán densities of $r$-uniform $t$-daisies. To do so, we introduce (and make some progress on) the following natural problem in additive combinatorics: for integers $m \geq 2t \geq 4$, what is the maximum cardinality $g(m,t)$ of a subset $R$ of $\mathbb{Z}/m\mathbb{Z}$ such that for any $x \in \mathbb{Z}/m\mathbb{Z}$ and any $2t$-element subset $X$ of $\mathbb{Z}/m\mathbb{Z}$, there are $t$ distinct elements of $X$ whose sum is not in the translate $x+R$? This is a slice-analogue of the extremal Hilbert cube problem considered by Gunderson and Rödl and its generalization studied by Cilleruelo and Tesoro.

On permutations avoiding partially ordered patterns defined by bipartite graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Partially ordered patterns (POPs) generalize the notion of classical patterns studied in the literature in the context of permutations, words, compositions and partitions. In this paper, we give a number of general, and specific enumerative results for POPs in permutations defined by bipartite graphs, substantially extending the list of known results in this direction. In particular, we completely characterize the Wilf-equivalence for patterns defined by the N-shape posets.

The Binary Rank of Circulant Block Matrices
Published • View Publication • BIB
The binary rank of a $0,1$ matrix is the smallest size of a partition of its ones into monochromatic combinatorial rectangles. A matrix $M$ is called $(k_1, \ldots, k_m ; n_1, \ldots, n_m)$ circulant block diagonal if it is a block matrix with $m$ diagonal blocks, such that for each $i \in [m]$, the $i$th diagonal block of $M$ is the circulant matrix whose first row has $k_i$ ones followed by $n_i-k_i$ zeros, and all of whose other entries are zeros. In this work, we study the binary rank of these matrices and of their complement. In particular, we compare the binary rank of these matrices to their rank over the reals, which forms a lower bound on the former. We present a general method for proving upper bounds on the binary rank of block matrices that have diagonal blocks of some specified structure and ones elsewhere. Using this method, we prove that the binary rank of the complement of a $(k_1, \ldots, k_m ; n_1, \ldots, n_m)$ circulant block diagonal matrix for integers satisfying $n_i>k_i>0$ for each $i \in [m]$ exceeds its real rank by no more than the maximum of $\gcd(n_i,k_i)-1$ over all $i \in [m]$. We further present several sufficient conditions for the binary rank of these matrices to strictly exceed their real rank. By combining the upper and lower bounds, we determine the exact binary rank of various families of matrices and, in addition, significantly generalize a result of Gregory. Motivated by a question of Pullman, we study the binary rank of $k$-regular $0,1$ matrices and of their complement. As an application of our results on circulant block diagonal matrices, we show that for every $k \geq 2$, there exist $k$-regular $0,1$ matrices whose binary rank is strictly larger than that of their complement. Furthermore, we exactly determine for every integer $r$, the smallest possible binary rank of the complement of a $2$-regular $0,1$ matrix with binary rank $r$.

Finding an almost perfect matching in a hypergraph avoiding forbidden submatchings
In 1973, Erdős conjectured the existence of high girth $(n,3,2)$-Steiner systems. Recently, Glock, Kühn, Lo, and Osthus and independently Bohman and Warnke proved the approximate version of Erdős' conjecture. Just this year, Kwan, Sah, Sawhney, and Simkin proved Erdős' conjecture. As for Steiner systems with more general parameters, Glock, Kühn, Lo, and Osthus conjectured the existence of high girth $(n,q,r)$-Steiner systems. We prove the approximate version of their conjecture. This result follows from our general main results which concern finding perfect or almost perfect matchings in a hypergraph $G$ avoiding a given set of submatchings (which we view as a hypergraph $H$ where $V(H)=E(G)$). Our first main result is a common generalization of the classical theorems of Pippenger (for finding an almost perfect matching) and Ajtai, Komlós, Pintz, Spencer, and Szemerédi (for finding an independent set in girth five hypergraphs). More generally, we prove this for coloring and even list coloring, and also generalize this further to when $H$ is a hypergraph with small codegrees (for which high girth designs is a specific instance). Indeed, the coloring version of our result even yields an almost partition of $K_n^r$ into approximate high girth $(n,q,r)$-Steiner systems. Our main results also imply the existence of a perfect matching in a bipartite hypergraph where the parts have slightly unbalanced degrees. This has a number of applications; for example, it proves the existence of $Δ$ pairwise disjoint list colorings in the setting of Kahn's theorem; it also proves asymptotic versions of various rainbow matching results in the sparse setting (where the number of times a color appears could be much smaller than the number of colors) and even the existence of many pairwise disjoint rainbow matchings in such circumstances.

Fixed-Parameter Algorithms for the Kneser and Schrijver Problems
Published • View Publication • BIB
The Kneser graph $K(n,k)$ is defined for integers $n$ and $k$ with $n \geq 2k$ as the graph whose vertices are all the $k$-subsets of $[n]=\{1,2,\ldots,n\}$ where two such sets are adjacent if they are disjoint. The Schrijver graph $S(n,k)$ is defined as the subgraph of $K(n,k)$ induced by the collection of all $k$-subsets of $[n]$ that do not include two consecutive elements modulo $n$. It is known that the chromatic number of both $K(n,k)$ and $S(n,k)$ is $n-2k+2$. In the computational Kneser and Schrijver problems, we are given an access to a coloring with $n-2k+1$ colors of the vertices of $K(n,k)$ and $S(n,k)$ respectively, and the goal is to find a monochromatic edge. We prove that the problems admit randomized algorithms with running time $n^{O(1)} \cdot k^{O(k)}$, hence they are fixed-parameter tractable with respect to the parameter $k$. The analysis involves structural results on intersecting families and on induced subgraphs of Kneser and Schrijver graphs. We also study the Agreeable-Set problem of assigning a small subset of a set of $m$ items to a group of $\ell$ agents, so that all agents value the subset at least as much as its complement. As an application of our algorithm for the Kneser problem, we obtain a randomized polynomial-time algorithm for the Agreeable-Set problem for instances with $\ell \geq m - O(\frac{\log m}{\log \log m})$. We further show that the Agreeable-Set problem is at least as hard as a variant of the Kneser problem with an extended access to the input coloring.

A Pattern Avoidance Characterization for Smoothness of Positroid Varieties
Positroids are certain representable matroids originally studied by Postnikov in connection with the totally nonnegative Grassmannian and now used widely in algebraic combinatorics. The positroids give rise to determinantal equations defining positroid varieties as subvarieties of the Grassmannian variety. Rietsch, Knutson-Lam-Speyer and Pawlowski studied geometric and cohomological properties of these varieties. In this paper, we continue the study of the geometric properties of positroid varieties by establishing several equivalent conditions characterizing smooth positroid varieties using a variation of pattern avoidance defined on decorated permutations, which are in bijection with positroids. Furthermore, we give a combinatorial method for determining the dimension of the tangent space of a positroid variety at key points using an induced subgraph of the Johnson graph. We also give a Bruhat interval characterization of positroids.

Cycle lengths modulo $k$ in expanders
Published • View Publication • BIB
Given a constant $α>0$, an $n$-vertex graph is called an $α$-expander if every set $X$ of at most $n/2$ vertices in $G$ has an external neighborhood of size at least $α|X|$. Addressing a question posed by Friedman and Krivelevich in [Combinatorica, 41(1), (2021), pp. 53--74], we prove the following result: Let $k>1$ be an integer with smallest prime divisor $p$. Then for $α>\frac{1}{p-1}$ every sufficiently large $α$-expanding graph contains cycles of length congruent to any given residue modulo $k$. This result is almost best possible, in the following sense: There exists an absolute constant $c>0$ such that for every integer $k$ with smallest prime divisor $p$ and for every positive $α<\frac{c}{p-1}$, there exist arbitrarily large $α$-expanding graphs with no cycles of length $r$ modulo $k$, for some $r \in \{0,\ldots,k-1\}$.
