Toughness, hamiltonicity and spectral radius in graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
The study of the existence of hamiltonian cycles in a graph is a classic problem in graph theory. By incorporating toughness and spectral conditions, we can consider Chvátal's conjecture from another perspective: what is the spectral condition to guarantee the existence of a hamiltonian cycle among $t$-tough graphs? We first give the answer to $1$-tough graphs, i.e. if $ρ(G)\geqρ(M_{n})$, then $G$ contains a hamiltonian cycle, unless $G\cong M_{n}$, where $M_{n}=K_{1}\nabla K_{n-4}^{+3}$ and $K_{n-4}^{+3}$ is the graph obtained from $3K_{1}\cup K_{n-4}$ by adding three independent edges between $3K_{1}$ and $K_{n-4}$. The Brouwer's toughness theorem states that every $d$-regular connected graph always has $t(G)>\frac{d}λ-1$ where $λ$ is the second largest absolute eigenvalue of the adjacency matrix. In this paper, we extend the result in terms of its spectral radius, i.e. we provide a spectral condition for a graph to be 1-tough with minimum degree $δ$ and to be $t$-tough, respectively.

Combinatoric topological string theories and group theory algorithms
Published in JHEP 10 (2022) 147 • View Publication • BIB
A number of finite algorithms for constructing representation theoretic data from group multiplications in a finite group G have recently been shown to be related to amplitudes for combinatoric topological strings (G-CTST) based on Dijkgraaf-Witten theory of flat G-bundles on surfaces. We extend this result to projective representations of G using twisted Dijkgraaf-Witten theory. New algorithms for characters are described, based on handle creation operators and minimal multiplicative generating subspaces for the centers of group algebras and twisted group algebras. Such minimal generating subspaces are of interest in connection with information theoretic aspects of the AdS/CFT correspondence. For the untwisted case, we describe the integrality properties of certain character sums and character power sums which follow from these constructive G-CTST algorithms. These integer sums appear as residues of singularities in G-CTST generating functions. S-duality of the combinatoric topological strings motivates the definition of an inverse handle creation operator in the centers of group algebras and twisted group algebras.

The Cyclic Flats of a $q$-Matroid
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper we develop the theory of cyclic flats of $q$-matroids. We show that the lattice of cyclic flats, together with their ranks, uniquely determines a $q$-matroid and hence derive a new $q$-cryptomorphism. We introduce the notion of $\mathbb{F}_{q^m}$-independence of an $\mathbb{F}_q$-subspace of $\mathbb{F}_q^n$ and we show that $q$-matroids generalize this concept, in the same way that matroids generalize the notion of linear independence of vectors over a given field.

Hamiltonicity after reversing the directed edges at a vertex of a Cartesian product
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $\vec C_m$ and $\vec C_n$ be directed cycles of length $m$ and $n$, with $m,n \ge 3$, and let $P(\vec C_m \mathbin{\Box} \vec C_n)$ be the digraph that is obtained from the Cartesian product $\vec C_m \mathbin{\Box} \vec C_n$ by choosing a vertex $v$, and reversing the orientation of all four directed edges that are incident with $v$. (This operation is called "pushing" at the vertex $v$.) By applying a special case of unpublished work of S.X.Wu, we find elementary number-theoretic necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of a hamiltonian cycle in $P(\vec C_m \mathbin{\Box} \vec C_n)$. A consequence is that if $P(\vec C_m \mathbin{\Box} \vec C_n)$ is hamiltonian, then $\gcd(m,n) = 1$, which implies that $\vec C_m \mathbin{\Box} \vec C_n$ is not hamiltonian. This final conclusion verifies a conjecture of J.B.Klerlein and E.C.Carr.
Block designs with $\gcd(r,λ)=1$ admitting flag-transitive automorphism groups
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper, we present a classification of $2$-designs with $\gcd(r,λ)=1$ admitting flag-transitive automorphism groups. If $G$ is a flag-transitive automorphism group of a non-trivial $2$-design $\mathcal{D}$ with $\gcd(r,λ)=1$, then either $(\mathcal{D},G)$ is one of the known examples described in this paper, or $\mathcal{D}$ has $q = p^{d}$ points with $p$ prime and $G$ is a subgroup of $AΓL_{1}(q)$.

Ramanujan congruences for overpartitions with restricted odd differences
Published • View Publication • BIB
We investigate Ramanujan congruences for the function which counts the overpartitions of n with restricted odd differences. In particular, we show that only one such congruence exists. Our method involves using the theory of modular forms to prove a more general theorem which bounds the number of primes possible for Ramanujan congruences in certain eta-quotients. This generalizes work done by Jonah Sinick. We also provide two congruences modulo 5 for this function.

Convex polytopes in restricted point sets in $\mathbb{R}^d$
Published in Advances in Combinatorics 2025:1, 27pp • View Publication • BIB
For a finite point set $P \subset \mathbb{R}^d$, denote by $\text{diam}(P)$ the ratio of the largest to the smallest distances between pairs of points in $P$. Let $c_{d, α}(n)$ be the largest integer $c$ such that any $n$-point set $P \subset \mathbb{R}^d$ in general position, satisfying $\text{diam}(P) < α\sqrt[d]{n}$, contains an $c$-point convex independent subset. We determine the asymptotics of $c_{d, α}(n)$ as $n \to \infty$ by showing the existence of positive constants $β= β(d, α)$ and $γ= γ(d)$ such that $βn^{\frac{d-1}{d+1}} \le c_{d, α}(n) \le γn^{\frac{d-1}{d+1}}$ for $α\geq 2$.
Global Rigidity of Triangulated Manifolds
Published in Advances in Mathematics, Volume 458, Part A, 2024, 109953 • View Publication • BIB
We prove that if $G$ is the graph of a connected triangulated $(d-1)$-manifold, for $d\geq 3$, then $G$ is generically globally rigid in $\mathbb R^d$ if and only if it is $(d+1)$-connected and, if $d=3$, $G$ is not planar. The special case $d=3$ verifies a conjecture of Connelly. Our results actually apply to a much larger class of simplicial complexes, namely the circuits of the simplicial matroid. We also give two significant applications of our main theorems. We show that that the characterisation of pseudomanifolds with extremal edge numbers given by the Lower Bound Theorem extends to circuits of the simplicial matroid. We also prove the generic case of a conjecture of Kalai concerning the reconstructability of a polytope from its space of stresses. The proofs of our main results adapt earlier ideas of Fogelsanger and Whiteley to the setting of global rigidity. In particular we verify a special case of Whiteley's vertex splitting conjecture for global rigidity.

The Projectivization Matroid of a $q$-Matroid
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper, we investigate the relation between a $q$-matroid and its associated matroid called the projectivization matroid. The latter arises by projectivizing the groundspace of the $q$-matroid and considering the projective space as the groundset of the associated matroid on which is defined a rank function compatible with that of the $q$-matroid. We show that the projectivization map is a functor from categories of $q$-matroids to categories of matroids, which allows to prove new results about maps of $q$-matroids. We furthermore show the characteristic polynomial of a $q$-matroid is equal to that of the projectivization matroid. We use this relation to establish a recursive formula for the characteristic polynomial of a $q$-matroid in terms of the characteristic polynomial of its minors. Finally we use the projectivization matroid to prove a $q$-analogue of the critical theorem in terms of $\mathbb{F}_{q^m}$-linear rank metric codes and $q$-matroids.

Homomorphisms of (n,m)-graphs with respect to generalised switch
Published • View Publication • BIB
The study of homomorphisms of $(n,m)$-graphs, that is, adjacency preserving vertex mappings of graphs with $n$ types of arcs and $m$ types of edges was initiated by Nešetřil and Raspaud in 2000. Later, some attempts were made to generalize the switch operation that is popularly used in the study of signed graphs, and study its effect on the above mentioned homomorphism. In this article, we too provide a generalization of the switch operation on $(n,m)$-graphs, which to the best of our knowledge, encapsulates all the previously known generalizations as special cases. We approach the study of homomorphisms with respect to the switch operation axiomatically. We prove some fundamental results that are essential tools in the further study of this topic. In the process of proving the fundamental results, we have provided yet another solution to an open problem posed by Klostermeyer and MacGillivray in 2004. We also prove the existence of a categorical product for $(n,m)$-graphs with respect to a particular class of generalized switch which implicitly uses category theory. This is a counter intuitive solution as the number of vertices in the Categorical product of two $(n,m)$-graphs on $p$ and $q$ vertices has a multiple of $pq$ many vertices, where the multiple depends on the switch. This solves an open question asked by Brewster in the PEPS 2012 workshop as a corollary. We also provide a way to calculate the product explicitly, and prove general properties of the product. We define the analog of chromatic number for $(n,m)$-graphs with respect to generalized switch and explore the interrelations between chromatic numbers with respect to different switch operations. We find the value of this chromatic number for the family of forests using group theoretic notions.

Characteristic polynomials of the weak order on classical and affine Coxeter groups
Published • View Publication • BIB
We find a simple product formula for the characteristic polynomial of the permutations with a fixed descent set under the weak order. As a corollary we obtain a simple product formula for the characteristic polynomial of alternating permutations. We generalize these results to Coxeter groups. We also find a formula for the generating function for the characteristic polynomials of classical Coxeter groups, which is then related to affine Coxeter groups.
Dynamical notions along filters
We study the localization along a filter of several dynamical notions. This generalizes and extends similar localizations that have been considered in the literature, e.g. near 0 and near an idempotent. Definitions and basic properties of F-syndetic, piecewise F-syndetic, collectionwise F-piecewise syndetic, F-quasi central and F-central sets and their relations with F-uniformly recurrent points and ultrafilters are studied. We provide also the nonstandard characterizations of some of the above notions and we prove the partition regularity of several nonlinear equations along filters under mild general assumptions.

Improved replica bounds for the independence ratio of random regular graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Studying independent sets of maximum size is equivalent to considering the hard-core model with the fugacity parameter $λ$ tending to infinity. Finding the independence ratio of random $d$-regular graphs for some fixed degree $d$ has received much attention both in random graph theory and in statistical physics. For $d \geq 20$ the problem is conjectured to exhibit 1-step replica symmetry breaking (1-RSB). The corresponding 1-RSB formula for the independence ratio was confirmed for (very) large $d$ in a breakthrough paper by Ding, Sly, and Sun. Furthermore, the so-called interpolation method shows that this 1-RSB formula is an upper bound for each $d \geq 3$. For $d \leq 19$ this bound is not tight and full-RSB is expected. In this work we use numerical optimization to find good substituting parameters for discrete $r$-RSB formulas ($r=2,3,4,5$) to obtain improved rigorous upper bounds for the independence ratio for each degree $3 \leq d \leq 19$. As $r$ grows, these formulas get increasingly complicated and it becomes challenging to compute their numerical values efficiently. Also, the functions to minimize have a large number of local minima, making global optimization a difficult task.

Asymptotic Theories of Classes Defined by Forbidden Homomorphisms
We study the first-order almost-sure theories for classes of finite structures that are specified by homomorphically forbidding a set $\mathcal{F}$ of finite structures. If $\mathcal{F}$ consists of undirected graphs, a full description of these theories can be derived from the Kolaitis-Prömel-Rothschild theorem, which treats the special case where $\mathcal{F} = \{K_n\}$. The corresponding question for finite sets $\mathcal{F}$ of finite directed graphs is wide open. We present a full description of the almost-sure theories of classes described by homomorphically forbidding finite sets $\mathcal{F}$ of oriented trees; all of them are $ω$-categorical. In our proof, we establish a result of independent interest, namely that every constraint satisfaction problem for a finite digraph has first-order convergence, and that the corresponding asymptotic theory can be described as a finite linear combination of $ω$-categorical theories.

The Dumont Ansatz for the Eulerian Polynomials, Peak Polynomials and Derivative Polynomials
Published • View Publication • BIB
We observe that three context-free grammars of Dumont can be brought to a common ground, via the idea of transformations of grammars, proposed by Ma-Ma-Yeh. Then we develop a unified perspective to investigate several combinatorial objects in connection with the bivariate Eulerian polynomials. We call this approach the Dumont ansatz. As applications, we provide grammatical treatments, in the spirit of the symbolic method, of relations on the Springer numbers, the Euler numbers, the three kinds of peak polynomials, an identity of Petersen, and the two kinds of derivative polynomials, introduced by Knuth-Buckholtz and Carlitz-Scoville, and later by Hoffman in a broader context. We obtain a convolution formula on the left peak polynomials, leading to the Gessel formula. In this framework, we are led to the combinatorial interpretations of the derivative polynomials due to Josuat-Vergès.

Topology of real multi-affine hypersurfaces and a homological stability property
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $\mathrm{R}$ be a real closed field. We prove that the number of semi-algebraically connected components of a real hypersurface in $\mathrm{R}^n$ defined by a multi-affine polynomial of degree $d$ is bounded by $2^{d-1}$. This bound is sharp and is independent of $n$ (as opposed to the classical bound of $d(2d -1)^{n-1}$ on the Betti numbers of hypersurfaces defined by arbitrary polynomials of degree $d$ in $\mathrm{R}^n$ due to Petrovski{\uı} and Ole{\uı}nik, Thom and Milnor). Moreover, we show there exists $c > 1$, such that given a sequence $(B_n)_{n >0}$ where $B_n$ is a closed ball in $\mathrm{R}^n$ of positive radious, there exist hypersurfaces $(V_n)_{n_>0}$ defined by symmetric multi-affine polynomials of degree $4$, such that $\sum_{i \leq 5} b_i(V_n \cap B_n) > c^n$, where $b_i(\cdot)$ denotes the $i$-th Betti number with rational coeffcients. Finally, as an application of the main result of the paper we verify a representational stability conjecture due to Basu and Riener on the cohomology modules of symmetric real algebraic sets for a new and much larger class of symmetric real algebraic sets than known before.

Linear Hashing with $\ell_\infty$ guarantees and two-sided Kakeya bounds
Published in TheoretiCS, Volume 3 (April 3, 2024) theoretics:11529 • View Publication • BIB
We show that a randomly chosen linear map over a finite field gives a good hash function in the $\ell_\infty$ sense. More concretely, consider a set $S \subset \mathbb{F}_q^n$ and a randomly chosen linear map $L : \mathbb{F}_q^n \to \mathbb{F}_q^t$ with $q^t$ taken to be sufficiently smaller than $ |S|$. Let $U_S$ denote a random variable distributed uniformly on $S$. Our main theorem shows that, with high probability over the choice of $L$, the random variable $L(U_S)$ is close to uniform in the $\ell_\infty$ norm. In other words, {\em every} element in the range $\mathbb{F}_q^t$ has about the same number of elements in $S$ mapped to it. This complements the widely-used Leftover Hash Lemma (LHL) which proves the analog statement under the statistical, or $\ell_1$, distance (for a richer class of functions) as well as prior work on the expected largest 'bucket size' in linear hash functions [ADMPT99]. By known bounds from the load balancing literature [RS98], our results are tight and show that linear functions hash as well as trully random function up to a constant factor in the entropy loss. Our proof leverages a connection between linear hashing and the finite field Kakeya problem and extends some of the tools developed in this area, in particular the polynomial method.

Biadjoint Scalars and Associahedra from Residues of Generalized Amplitudes
Published • View Publication • BIB
In the Grassmannian formulation of the S-matrix for planar $\mathcal{N}=4$ Super Yang-Mills, $N^{k-2}MHV$ scattering amplitudes for $k$ negative and $n-k$ positive helicity gluons can be expressed, by an application of the global residue theorem, as a signed sum over a collection of $(k-2)(n-k-2)$-dimensional residues. These residues are supported on certain positroid subvarieties of the Grassmannian $G(k,n)$. In this paper, we replace the Grassmannian $G(3,n)$ with its torus quotient, the moduli space of $n$ points in the projective plane in general position, and planar $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM with generalized biadjoint scalar amplitudes $m^{(3)}_n$ as introduced by Cachazo-Early-Guevara-Mizera (CEGM). Whereas in the Grassmannian formulation residues of the Parke-Taylor form correspond to individual BCFW, or on-shell diagrams, we show that each such $(n-5)$-dimensional residue of $m^{(3)}_n$ is an entire biadjoint scalar partial amplitude $m^{(2)}_n$, that is a sum over all tree-level Feynman diagrams for a fixed planar order. We propose a generalization which would give rise to identifications of $m^{(2)}_n$ inside $m^{(k)}_n$ for $k\ge 4$, via $(k-2)(n-k-2)$-dimensional residues. Our proof for $k=3$ uses the CEGM formula for $m^{(3)}_n$; it predicts a new Minkowski sum realization of the associahedron in terms of certain positroid polytopes in the second hypersimplex $Δ_{2,n}$.

Galvin's problem in higher dimensions
Published • View Publication • BIB
It is proved that for each natural number $n$, if $\left| \mathbb{R} \right| = {\aleph}_{n}$, then there is a coloring of ${\left[ \mathbb{R} \right]}^{n+2}$ into ${\aleph}_{0}$ colors that takes all colors on ${\left[ X \right]}^{n+2}$ whenever $X$ is any set of reals which is homeomorphic to $\mathbb{Q}$. This generalizes a theorem of Baumgartner and sheds further light on a problem of Galvin from the 1970s. Our result also complements and contrasts with our earlier result saying that any coloring of ${\left[ \mathbb{R} \right]}^{2}$ into finitely many colors can be reduced to at most $2$ colors on the pairs of some set of reals which is homeomorphic to $\mathbb{Q}$ when large cardinals exist.
