On some batch code properties of the simplex code
Published • View Publication • BIB
The binary $k$-dimensional simplex code is known to be a $2^{k-1}$-batch code and is conjectured to be a $2^{k-1}$-functional batch code. Here, we offer a simple, constructive proof of a result that is "in between" these two properties. Our approach is to relate these properties to certain (old and new) additive problems in finite abelian groups. We also formulate a conjecture for finite abelian groups that generalizes the above-mentioned conjecture.
A Flat Wall Theorem for Matching Minors in Bipartite Graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
A major step in the graph minors theory of Robertson and Seymour is the transition from the Grid Theorem which, in some sense uniquely, describes areas of large treewidth within a graph, to a notion of local flatness of these areas in form of the existence of a large flat wall within any huge grid of an H-minor free graph. In this paper, we prove a matching theoretic analogue of the Flat Wall Theorem for bipartite graphs excluding a fixed matching minor. Our result builds on a a tight relationship between structural digraph theory and matching theory and allows us to deduce a Flat Wall Theorem for digraphs which substantially differs from a previously established directed variant of this theorem.

Differential graded algebras for trivalent plane graphs and their representations
Published • View Publication • BIB
To any trivalent plane graph embedded in the sphere, Casals and Murphy associate a differential graded algebra (dg-algebra), in which the underlying graded algebra is free associative over a commutative ring. Our first result is the construction of a generalization of the Casals--Murphy dg-algebra to non-commutative coefficients, for which we prove various functoriality properties not previously verified in the commutative setting. Our second result is to prove that rank $r$ representations of this dg-algebra, over a field $\mathbb{F}$, correspond to colorings of the faces of the graph by elements of the Grassmannian $\operatorname{Gr}(r,2r;\mathbb{F})$ so that bordering faces are transverse, up to the natural action of $\operatorname{PGL}_{2r}(\mathbb{F})$. Underlying the combinatorics, the dg-algebra is a computation of the fully non-commutative Legendrian contact dg-algebra for Legendrian satellites of Legendrian 2-weaves, though we do not prove as such in this paper. The graph coloring problem verifies that for Legendrian 2-weaves, rank $r$ representations of the Legendrian contact dg-algebra correspond to constructible sheaves of microlocal rank $r$. This is the first explicit such computation of the bijection between the moduli spaces of representations and sheaves for an infinite family of Legendrian surfaces.

GKM spaces, and the signed positivity of the nabla operator
We show that the Frobenius character of the equivariant Borel-Moore homology of a certain positive $GL_n$-version of the unramified affine Springer fiber $Z_k$ studied by Goreski, Kottwitz and MacPherson is computed by the matrix coefficients of the $\nabla^k$-operator, which acts diagonally in the modified Macdonald basis. We do this by relating the combinatorial formula for the $\nabla^k$-operator we obtained in an earlier paper to the GKM paving of $Z_k$, and we give an algebraic presentation of the above homology as an explicit submodule of the Kostant-Kumar nil Hecke algebra. We then study a certain open locus $U_k \subset Z_k$, and reduce a long-standing conjecture of Bergeron, Garsia, Haiman and Tesler, which predicts the sign of the coefficients of the Schur expansion of $\nabla^k$, to a vanishing conjecture about the homology groups of $U_k$. The latter conjecture is in turn reduced to a vanishing conjecture for certain open loci of the regular semisimple Hessenberg varieties which are indexed by partial Dyck paths.
A Lattice Model for Super LLT Polynomials
Published • View Publication • BIB
We introduce a solvable lattice model for supersymmetric LLT polynomials, also known as super LLT polynomials, based upon particle interactions in super n-ribbon tableaux. Using operators on a Fock space, we prove a Cauchy identity for super LLT polynomials, simultaneously generalizing the Cauchy and dual Cauchy identities for LLT polynomials. Lastly, we construct a solvable semi-infinite Cauchy lattice model with a surprising Yang-Baxter equation and examine its connections to the Cauchy identity.

Walks avoiding a quadrant and the reflection principle
Published in Europ. J. Combinatorics, 119 (2024), 103803 • View Publication • BIB
We continue the enumeration of plane lattice walks with small steps avoiding the negative quadrant, initiated by the first author in 2016. We solve in detail a new case, namely the king model where all eight nearest neighbour steps are allowed. The associated generating function is proved to be the sum of a simple, explicit D-finite series (related to the number of walks confined to the first quadrant), and an algebraic one. This was already the case for the two models solved by the first author in 2016. The principle of the approach is also the same, but challenging theoretical and computational difficulties arise as we now handle algebraic series of larger degree. We expect a similar algebraicity phenomenon to hold for the seven Weyl step sets, which are those for which walks confined to the first quadrant can be counted using the reflection principle. With this paper, this is now proved for three of them. For the remaining four, we predict the D-finite part of the solution, and in three of the four cases, give evidence for the algebraicity of the remaining part.

Poset Ramsey numbers: large Boolean lattice versus a fixed poset
Published • View Publication • BIB
Given partially ordered sets (posets) $(P, \leq_P)$ and $(P', \leq_{P'})$, we say that $P'$ contains a copy of $P$ if for some injective function $f: P\rightarrow P'$ and for any $X, Y\in P$, $X\leq _P Y$ if and only of $f(X)\leq_{P'} f(Y)$. For any posets $P$ and $Q$, the poset Ramsey number $R(P,Q)$ is the least positive integer $N$ such that no matter how the elements of an $N$-dimensional Boolean lattice are colored in blue and red, there is either a copy of $P$ with all blue elements or a copy of $Q$ with all red elements. We focus on a poset Ramsey number $R(P, Q_n)$ for a fixed poset $P$ and an $n$-dimensional Boolean lattice $Q_n$, as $n$ grows large. We show a sharp jump in behaviour of this number as a function of $n$ depending on whether or not $P$ contains a copy of either a poset $V$, i.e. a poset on elements $A, B, C$ such that $B>C$, $A>C$, and $A$ and $B$ incomparable, or a poset $Λ$, its symmetric counterpart. Specifically, we prove that if $P$ contains a copy of $V$ or $Λ$ then $R(P, Q_n) \geq n +\frac{1}{15} \frac{n}{\log n}$. Otherwise $R(P, Q_n) \leq n + c(P)$ for a constant $c(P)$. This gives the first non-marginal improvement of a lower bound on poset Ramsey numbers and as a consequence gives $R(Q_2, Q_n) = n + Θ(\frac{n}{\log n})$.
Roman domination in graphs with minimum degree at least two and some forbidden cycles
Let $G=(V,E)$ be a graph of order $n$ and let $γ_{R}(G)$ and $\partial (G)$ denote the Roman domination number and the differential of $G,$ respectively. In this paper we prove that for any integer $k\geq 0$, if $G$ is a graph of order $n\geq 6k+9$, minimum degree $δ\geq 2,$ which does not contain any induced $\{C_{5},C_{8},\ldots ,C_{3k+2}\}$% -cycles, then $γ_{R}(G)\leq \frac{(4k+8)n}{6k+11}$. This bound is an improvement of the bounds given in [E.W. Chambers, B. Kinnersley, N. Prince, and D.B. West, Extremal problems for Roman domination, SIAM J. Discrete Math. 23 (2009) 1575--1586] when $k=0,$ {and [S. Bermudo, On the differential and Roman domination number of a graph with minimum degree two, Discrete Appl. Math. 232 (2017), 64--72] when }$k=1.$ Moreover, using the Gallai-type result involving the Roman domination number and the differential of graphs established by Bermudo et al. stating that $γ_{R}(G)+\partial (G)=n$, we have $\partial (G)\geq \frac{(2k+3)n}{6k+11},$ thereby settling the conjecture of Bermudo posed in the second paper.

Fractional revival on non-cospectral vertices
Published • View Publication • BIB
Perfect state transfer and fractional revival can be used to move information between pairs of vertices in a quantum network. While perfect state transfer has received a lot of attention, fractional revival is newer and less studied. One problem is to determine the differences between perfect state transfer and fractional revival. If perfect state transfer occurs between two vertices in a graph, the vertices must be cospectral. Further if there is perfect state transfer between vertices $a$ and $b$ in a graph, there cannot be perfect state transfer from $a$ to any other vertex. No examples of unweighted graphs with fractional revival between non-cospectral vertices were known; here we give an infinite family of such graphs. No examples of unweighted graphs where the pairs involved in fractional revival overlapped were known; we give examples of such graphs as well.

A degree preserving delta wye transformation with applications to 6-regular graphs and Feynman periods
Published • View Publication • BIB
We investigate a degree preserving variant of the $Δ$-Y transformation which replaces a triangle with a new 6-valent vertex which has double edges to the vertices that had been in the triangle. This operation is relevant for understanding scalar Feynman integrals in 6 dimensions. We study the structure of equivalence classes under this operation and its inverse, with particular attention to when the equivalence classes are finite, when they contain simple 6-regular graphs, and when they contain doubled 3-regular graphs. The last of these, in particular, is relevant for the Feynman integral calculations and we make some observations linking the structure of these classes to the Feynman periods. Furthermore, we investigate properties of minimal graphs in these equivalence classes.

Generalized Borsuk Graphs
Published in Discrete Comput Geom (2024) • View Publication • BIB
Given a finite group $G$ acting freely on a compact metric space $M$, and $ε>0$, we define the $G$-Borsuk graph on $M$ by drawing edges $x\sim y$ whenever there is a non-identity $g\in G$ such that $d(x,gy)\leqε$. We show that when $ε$ is small, its chromatic number is determined by the topology of $M$ via its $G$-covering number, which is the minimum $k$ such that there is a closed cover $M=F_1\cup\dots\cup F_k$ with $F_i\cap g(F_i)=\emptyset$ for all $g\in G\setminus\{1\}$. We are interested in bounding this number. We give lower bounds using $G$-actions on Hom-complexes, and upper bounds using a recursive formula on the dimension of $M$. We conjecture that the true chromatic number coincides with the lower bound, and give computational evidence. We also study random $G$-Borsuk graphs, which are random induced subgraphs. For these, we compute thresholds for $ε$ that guarantee that the chromatic number is still that of the whole $G$-Borsuk graph. Our results are tight (up to a constant) when the $G$-index and dimension of $M$ coincide.
Harmonic Tutte polynomials of matroids

Double Dimer Covers on Snake Graphs from Super Cluster Expansions
Published • View Publication • BIB
In a recent paper, the authors gave combinatorial formulas for the Laurent expansions of super $λ$-lengths in a marked disk, generalizing Schiffler's $T$-path formula. In the present paper, we give an alternate combinatorial expression for these super $λ$-lengths in terms of double dimer covers on snake graphs. This generalizes the dimer formulas of Musiker, Schiffler, and Williams.

Network analysis using Forman curvature and Shapley values on hypergraphs
In recent years, network models have become more complex with the development of big data. Therefore, more advanced network analysis is required. In this paper, we introduce a new quantitative measure named combinatorial evaluation, which combines the discrete geometry concept of Forman Ricci curvature and the game theory concept of the Shapley value. We elucidated the characteristics of combinatorial evaluation by proving several properties of this indicator. Furthermore, we demonstrated the usefulness of the concept by calculating and comparing the conventional centrality and combinatorial evaluation for a concrete graph. The code is available at https://github.com/Taiki-Yamada-Math/CombinatorialEvaluation.

A variational principle for domino tilings of multiply-connected domains
We study random domino tilings of a multiply-connected domain with a height function defined on the universal covering space of the domain. We prove a large deviation principle for the height function in two asymptotic regimes. The first regime covers all domino tilings of the domain. We also prove a law of large numbers for height change in this regime. The second regime covers domino tilings with a given asymptotic height change $r$.
Ramsey number of 1-subdivisions of transitive tournaments
The study of problems concerning subdivisions of graphs has a rich history in extremal combinatorics. Confirming a conjecture of Burr and Erdős, Alon proved in 1994 that subdivided graphs have linear Ramsey numbers. Later, Alon, Krivelevich and Sudakov showed that every $n$-vertex graph with at least $\varepsilon n^2$ edges contains a $1$-subdivision of the complete graph on $c_{\varepsilon}\sqrt{n}$ vertices, resolving another old conjecture of Erdős. In this paper we consider the directed analogue of these problems and show that every tournament on at least $(2+o(1))k^2$ vertices contains the 1-subdivision of a transitive tournament on $k$ vertices. This is optimal up to a multiplicative factor of 4 and confirms a conjecture of Girão, Popielarz and Snyder.

Generalized outerplanar Turán number of short paths
Let $H$ be a graph. The generalized outerplanar Turán number of $H$, denoted by $f_{\mathcal{OP}}(n,H)$, is the maximum number of copies of $H$ in an $n$-vertex outerplanar graph. Let $P_k$ be the path on $k$ vertices. In this paper we give an exact value of $f_{\mathcal{OP}}(n,P_4)$ and a best asymptotic value of $f_{\mathcal{OP}}(n,P_5)$. Moreover, we characterize all outerplanar graphs containing $f_{\mathcal{OP}}(n,P_4)$ copies of $P_4$.

Cut norm discontinuity of triangular truncation of graphons
Published • View Publication • BIB
The space of $L^p$ graphons, symmetric measurable functions $w: [0,1]^2 \to \mathbb{R}$ with finite $p$-norm, features heavily in the study of sparse graph limit theory. We show that the triangular cut operator $M_χ$ acting on this space is not continuous with respect to the cut norm. This is achieved by showing that as $n\to \infty$, the norm of the triangular truncation operator $\mathcal{T}_n$ on symmetric matrices equipped with the cut norm grows to infinity as well. Due to the density of symmetric matrices in the space of $L^p$ graphons, the norm growth of $\mathcal{T}_n$ generalizes to the unboundedness of $M_χ$. We also show that the norm of $\mathcal{T}_n$ grows to infinity on symmetric matrices equipped with the operator norm.

Proper orientations and proper chromatic number
Published • View Publication • BIB
The proper chromatic number $\Vecχ(G)$ of a graph $G$ is the minimum $k$ such that there exists an orientation of the edges of $G$ with all vertex-outdegrees at most $k$ and such that for any adjacent vertices, the outdegrees are different. Two major conjectures about the proper chromatic number are resolved. First it is shown, that $\Vecχ(G)$ of any planar graph $G$ is bounded (in fact, it is at most 14). Secondly, it is shown that for every graph, $\Vecχ(G)$ is at most $O(\frac{r\log r}{\log\log r})+\tfrac{1}{2}\MAD(G)$, where $r=χ(G)$ is the usual chromatic number of the graph, and $\MAD(G)$ is the maximum average degree taken over all subgraphs of $G$. Several other related results are derived. Our proofs are based on a novel notion of fractional orientations.
