Integer point enumeration on independence polytopes and half-open hypersimplices
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper we investigate the Ehrhart Theory of the independence matroid polytope of uniform matroids. It is proved that these polytopes have an Ehrhart polynomial with positive coefficients. To do that, we prove that indeed all half-open-hypersimplices are Ehrhart positive, and tile disjointly our polytope using them.
A SAT-based Resolution of Lam's Problem
Published • View Publication • BIB
In 1989, computer searches by Lam, Thiel, and Swiercz experimentally resolved Lam's problem from projective geometry$\unicode{x2014}$the long-standing problem of determining if a projective plane of order ten exists. Both the original search and an independent verification in 2011 discovered no such projective plane. However, these searches were each performed using highly specialized custom-written code and did not produce nonexistence certificates. In this paper, we resolve Lam's problem by translating the problem into Boolean logic and use satisfiability (SAT) solvers to produce nonexistence certificates that can be verified by a third party. Our work uncovered consistency issues in both previous searches$\unicode{x2014}$highlighting the difficulty of relying on special-purpose search code for nonexistence results.
Finding uniformly most reliable graphs by counting trivial cuts
There is a vast literature focused on network reliability evaluation. In the last decades, reliability optimization has been also addressed. Frank Boesch in 1986 introduced the concept of uniformly most reliable graph (UMRG). Later, Boesch \emph{et al.} presented the first UMRGs and conjectured that some special subdivisions of the bipartite complete graph $K_{3,3}$, as well as the bipartite complete graph $K_{4,4}$, are UMRGs. Wang proved that the first conjecture is true. Wendy Myrvold confirmed that $K_{4,4}$ is also UMRG, by means of computational tests. However, thus far, there is no mathematical proof in the literature. A trivial cut is an edge-set that includes all the incident edges of a fixed node. In this article we describe a methodology to determine UMRGs based on bounding the number of trivial cuts. As a proof-of-concept it is proved that both $K_{3,3}$ and $K_{4,4}$ are UMRGs.

Some nonlinear inverse relations of Bell polynomials via the Lagrange inversion formula
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper, by means of the classical Lagrange inversion formula, we establish a general nonlinear inverse relations which is a partial solution to the problem proposed in the paper [J. Wang, Nonlinear inverse relations for the Bell polynomials via the Lagrange inversion formula, J. Integer Seq., Vol. 22 (2019), Article 19.3.8. (https://cs.uwaterloo.ca/journals/JIS/VOL22/Wang/wang53.pdf). As applications of this inverse relation, we not only find a short proof of another nonlinear inverse relation due to Birmajer et al., but also set up a few convolution identities concerning the Mina polynomials.

An Inequality for Coefficients of the Real-rooted Polynomials
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper, we prove that if $f(x)=\sum_{k=0}^n{n\choose k}a_kx^k$ is a polynomial with real zeros only, then the sequence $\{a_k\}_{k=0}^n$ satisfies the following inequalities $a_{k+1}^2(1-\sqrt{1-c_k})^2/a_k^2 \leq(a_{k+1}^2-a_ka_{k+2})/(a_k^2-a_{k-1}a_{k+1}) \leq a_{k+1}^2(1+\sqrt{1-c_k})^2/a_k^2$, where $c_k=a_ka_{k+2}/a_{k+1}^2$. This inequality holds for the coefficients of the Riemann $ξ$-function, the ultraspherical, Laguerre and Hermite polynomials, and the partition function. Moreover, as a corollary, for the partition function $p(n)$, we prove that $p(n)^2-p(n-1)p(n+1)$ is increasing for $n\geq 55$. We also find that for a positive and log-concave sequence $\{a_k\}_{k\geq 0}$, the inequality $a_{k+2}/a_k\leq (a_{k+1}^2-a_ka_{k+2})/(a_k^2-a_{k-1}a_{k+1}) \leq a_{k+1}/a_{k-1}$ is the sufficient condition for both the $2$-log-concavity and the higher order Tur{á}n inequalities of $\{a_k\}_{k\geq 0}$. It is easy to verify that if $a_k^2\geq ra_{k+1}a_{k-1}$, where $r\geq 2$, then the sequence $\{a_k\}_{k\geq 0}$ satisfies this inequality.

A Proof of the MV Matching Algorithm
The Micali-Vazirani (MV) algorithm for maximum cardinality matching in general graphs, which was published in 1980 \cite{MV}, remains to this day the most efficient known algorithm for the problem. This paper gives the first complete and correct proof of this algorithm. Central to our proof are some purely graph-theoretic facts, capturing properties of minimum length alternating paths; these may be of independent interest. An attempt is made to render the algorithm easier to comprehend.

Algebraic geometry of discrete interventional models
Published • View Publication • BIB
We investigate the algebra and geometry of general interventions in discrete DAG models. To this end, we introduce a theory for modeling soft interventions in the more general family of staged tree models and develop the formalism to study these models as parametrized subvarieties of a product of probability simplices. We then consider the problem of finding their defining equations, and we derive a combinatorial criterion for identifying interventional staged tree models for which the defining ideal is toric. We apply these results to the class of discrete interventional DAG models and establish a criteria to determine when these models are toric varieties.
Coefficientwise total positivity of some matrices defined by linear recurrences
Published in Séminaire Lotharingien de Combinatoire, 85B.30 (2021), 12 pp, https://www.mat.univie.ac.at/~slc/wpapers/FPSAC2021/30.html • Search Publication
We exhibit a lower-triangular matrix of polynomials $T(a,c,d,e,f,g)$ in six indeterminates that appears empirically to be coefficientwise totally positive, and which includes as a special case the Eulerian triangle. We prove the coefficientwise total positivity of $T(a,c,0,e,0,0)$, which includes the reversed Stirling subset triangle.
Degeneracy of $P_t$-free and $C_{\geq t}$-free graphs with no large complete bipartite subgraphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
A hereditary class of graphs $\mathcal{G}$ is \emph{$χ$-bounded} if there exists a function $f$ such that every graph $G \in \mathcal{G}$ satisfies $χ(G) \leq f(ω(G))$, where $χ(G)$ and $ω(G)$ are the chromatic number and the clique number of $G$, respectively. As one of the first results about $χ$-bounded classes, Gyárfás proved in 1985 that if $G$ is $P_t$-free, i.e., does not contain a $t$-vertex path as an induced subgraph, then $χ(G) \leq (t-1)^{ω(G)-1}$. In 2017, Chudnovsky, Scott, and Seymour proved that $C_{\geq t}$-free graphs, i.e., graphs that exclude induced cycles with at least $t$ vertices, are $χ$-bounded as well, and the obtained bound is again superpolynomial in the clique number. Note that $P_{t-1}$-free graphs are in particular $C_{\geq t}$-free. It remains a major open problem in the area whether for $C_{\geq t}$-free, or at least $P_t$-free graphs $G$, the value of $χ(G)$ can be bounded from above by a polynomial function of $ω(G)$. We consider a relaxation of this problem, where we compare the chromatic number with the size of a largest balanced biclique contained in the graph as a (not necessarily induced) subgraph. We show that for every $t$ there exists a constant $c$ such that for and every $C_{\geq t}$-free graph which does not contain $K_{\ell,\ell}$ as a subgraph, it holds that $χ(G) \leq \ell^{c}$.
The smallest number of vertices in a 2-arc-strong digraph which has no good pair
Published • View Publication • BIB
Bang-Jensen, Bessy, Havet and Yeo showed that every digraph of independence number at most 2 and arc-connectivity at least 2 has an out-branching $B^+$ and an in-branching $B^-$ which are arc-disjoint (such two branchings are called a {\it good pair}), which settled a conjecture of Thomassen for digraphs of independence number 2. They also proved that every digraph on at most 6 vertices and arc-connectivity at least 2 has a good pair and gave an example of a 2-arc-strong digraph $D$ on 10 vertices with independence number 4 that has no good pair. They asked for the smallest number $n$ of vertices in a 2-arc-strong digraph which has no good pair. In this paper, we prove that every digraph on at most 9 vertices and arc-connectivity at least 2 has a good pair, which solves this problem.

The effect of microscopic gap displacement on the correlation of gaps in dimer systems
Published • View Publication • BIB
In earlier work we showed that in the bulk, the correlation of gaps in dimer systems on the hexagonal lattice is governed, in the fine mesh limit, by Coulomb's law for 2D electrostatics. We also proved that the scaling limit of the discrete field ${\bold F}$ of average tile orientations is, up to a multiplicative constant, the electric field produced by a 2D system of charges corresponding to the gaps. In this paper we show that in the bulk, the relative change $T_{\al,\be}$ in correlation caused by displacing a hole by a fixed vector $(\al,\be)$ is, in the fine mesh limit, the projection on $(\al,\be)$ of a new field ${\bold T}$, which is also equal up to a multiplicative constant to the electric field of the corresponding system of charges. We also discuss the differences between the fields ${\bold T}$ and ${\bold F}$ and present conjectures for their fine mesh limits in the more general case of a dimer system with boundary. The new field ${\bold T}$ can be viewed as capturing the instantaneous pull on each gap in the surrounding fluctuating sea of dimers. From the point of view of the parallel to physics, the electrostatic force emerges then as an entropic force.

Between the enhanced power graph and the commuting graph
Published • View Publication • BIB
The purpose of this note is to define a graph whose vertex set is a finite group $G$, whose edge set is contained in that of the commuting graph of $G$ and contains the enhanced power graph of $G$. We call this graph the deep commuting graph of $G$. Two elements of $G$ are joined in the deep commuting graph if and only if their inverse images in every central extension of $G$ commute. We give conditions for the graph to be equal to either of the enhanced power graph and the commuting graph, and show that the automorphism group of $G$ acts as automorphisms of the deep commuting graph.

Transition matrices between Young's natural and seminormal representations
Published • View Publication • BIB
We derive a formula for the entries in the change-of-basis matrix between Young's seminormal and natural representations of the symmetric group. These entries are determined as sums over weighted paths in the weak Bruhat graph on standard tableaux, and we show that they can be computed recursively as the weighted sum of at most two previously-computed entries in the matrix. We generalize our results to work for affine Hecke algebras, Ariki-Koike algebras, Iwahori-Hecke algebras, and complex reflection groups given by the wreath product of a finite cyclic group with the symmetric group.

Highly Sorted Permutations and Bell Numbers
Published in Enumerative Combinatorics and Applications, 1 (2021) • View Publication • BIB
Let $s$ denote West's stack-sorting map. For all positive integers $m$ and all integers $n\geq 2m-2$, we give a simple characterization of the set $s^{n-m}(S_n)$; as a consequence, we find that $|s^{n-m}(S_n)|$ is the $m^\text{th}$ Bell number $B_m$. We also prove that the restriction $n\geq 2m-2$ is tight by showing that $|s^{m-3}(S_{2m-3})|=B_m+m-2$ for all $m\geq 3$.

Bounded Dyck paths, bounded alternating sequences, orthogonal polynomials, and reciprocity
Published in Europ. J. Combin. 121 (2024), 103840 • View Publication • BIB
The theme of this article is a "reciprocity" between bounded up-down paths and bounded alternating sequences. Roughly speaking, this ``reciprocity" manifests itself by the fact that the extension of the sequence of numbers of paths of length $n$, consisting of diagonal up- and down-steps and being confined to a strip of bounded width, to negative $n$ produces numbers of alternating sequences of integers that are bounded from below and from above. We show that this reciprocity extends to families of non-intersecting bounded up-down paths and certain arrays of alternating sequences which we call alternating tableaux. We provide as well weighted versions of these results. Our proofs are based on Viennot's theory of heaps of pieces and on the combinatorics of non-intersecting lattice paths. An unexpected application leads to a refinement of a result of Bousquet-Mélou and Viennot on the width-height-area generating function of parallelogram polyominoes. Finally, we exhibit the relation of the arising alternating tableaux to plane partitions of strip shapes.

Guessing about Guessing: Practical Strategies for Card Guessing with Feedback
Published • View Publication • BIB
In simple card games, cards are dealt one at a time and the player guesses each card sequentially. We study problems where feedback (e.g. correct/incorrect) is given after each guess. For decks with repeated values (as in blackjack where suits do not matter) the optimal strategy differs from the "greedy strategy" (of guessing a most likely card each round). Further, both optimal and greedy strategies are far too complicated for real time use by human players. Our main results show that simple heuristics perform close to optimal.

$λ$-Core Distance Partitions
Published • View Publication • BIB
The $λ$-core vertices of a graph correspond to the non-zero entries of some eigenvector of $λ$ for a universal adjacency matrix $\mathbf{U}$ of the graph. We define a partition of the vertex set $V$ based on the $λ$-core vertex set and its neighbourhoods at a distance $r$, and give a number of results relating the structure of the graph to this partition. For such partitions, we also define an entropic measure for the information content of a graph, related to every distinct eigenvalue $λ$ of $\mathbf{U}$, and discuss its properties and potential applications.

Integrability of diagonalizable matrices and a dual Schoenberg type inequality
Published • View Publication • BIB
The concepts of differentiation and integration for matrices were introduced for studying zeros and critical points of complex polynomials. Any matrix is differentiable, however not all matrices are integrable. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the integrability property and characterize it within the class of diagonalizable matrices. In order to do this we study the relation between the spectrum of a diagonalizable matrix and its integrability and the diagonalizability of the integral. Finally, we apply our results to obtain a dual Schoenberg type inequality relating zeros of polynomials with their critical points.

Conditional independence structures over four discrete random variables revisited: conditional Ingleton inequalities
Published in IEEE Transactions on Information Theory, vol. 67, no. 11, November 2021, pp. 7030 - 7049 • View Publication • BIB
The paper deals with conditional linear information inequalities valid for entropy functions induced by discrete random variables. Specifically, the so-called conditional Ingleton inequalities are in the center of interest: these are valid under conditional independence assumptions on the inducing random variables. We discuss five inequalities of this particular type, four of which has appeared earlier in the literature. Besides the proof of the new fifth inequality, simpler proofs of (some of) former inequalities are presented. These five information inequalities are used to characterize all conditional independence structures induced by four discrete random variables.
