An almost optimal bound on the number of intersections of two simple polygons
Published in Discrete and Computational Geometry 68 (2022), 1049-1077 • View Publication • BIB
What is the maximum number of intersections of the boundaries of a simple $m$-gon and a simple $n$-gon, assuming general position? This is a basic question in combinatorial geometry, and the answer is easy if at least one of $m$ and $n$ is even: If both $m$ and $n$ are even, then every pair of sides may cross and so the answer is $mn$. If exactly one polygon, say the $n$-gon, has an odd number of sides, it can intersect each side of the $m$-gon at most $n-1$ times; hence there are at most $mn-m$ intersections. It is not hard to construct examples that meet these bounds. If both $m$ and $n$ are odd, the best known construction has $mn-(m+n)+3$ intersections, and it is conjectured that this is the maximum. However, the best known upper bound is only $mn-(m + \lceil \frac{n}{6} \rceil)$, for $m \ge n$. We prove a new upper bound of $mn-(m+n)+C$ for some constant $C$, which is optimal apart from the value of $C$.

Simple eigenvalues of cubic vertex-transitive graphs
Published in Can. J. Math.-J. Can. Math. 76 (2024) 1496-1519 • View Publication • BIB
If $v$ is an eigenvector for eigenvalue $λ$ of a graph $X$ and $α$ is an automorphism of $X$, then $α(v)$ is also an eigenvector for $λ$. Thus it is rather exceptional for an eigenvalue of a vertex-transitive graph to be simple. We study cubic vertex-transitive graphs with a non-trivial simple eigenvalue, and discover remarkable connections to arc-transitivity, regular maps and Chebyshev polynomials.
The poset of copies for automorphism groups of countable relational structures
Let $\mathrm{G}$ be a subgroup of the symmetric group $\mathfrak S(U)$ of all permutations of a countable set $U$. Let $\overline{\mathrm{G}}$ be the topological closure of $\mathrm{G}$ in the function topology on $U^U$. We initiate the study of the poset $\overline{\mathrm{G}}[U]:=\{f[U]\mid f\in \overline{\mathrm{G}}\}$ of images of the functions in $\overline{\mathrm{G}}$, being ordered under inclusion. This set $\overline{\mathrm{G}}[U]$ of subsets of the set $U$ will be called the \emph{poset of copies for} the group $\mathrm{G}$. A denomination being justified by the fact that for every subgroup $\mathrm{G}$ of the symmetric group $\mathfrak S(U)$ there exists a homogeneous relational structure $R$ on $U$ such that $\overline G$ is the set of embeddings of the homogeneous structure $R$ into itself and $\overline{\mathrm{G}}[U]$ is the set of copies of $R$ in $R$ and that the set of bijections $\overline G\cap \mathfrak S(U)$ of $U$ to $U$ forms the group of automorphisms of $\mathrm{R}$.
Rowmotion Orbits of Trapezoid Posets
Published • View Publication • BIB
Rowmotion is an invertible operator on the order ideals of a poset which has been extensively studied and is well understood for the rectangle poset. In this paper, we show that rowmotion is equivariant with respect to a bijection of Hamaker, Patrias, Pechenik and Williams between order ideals of rectangle and trapezoid posets, thereby affirming a conjecture of Hopkins that the rectangle and trapezoid posets have the same rowmotion orbit structures. Our main tools in proving this are $K$-jeu-de-taquin and (weak) $K$-Knuth equivalence of increasing tableaux. We define $almost$ $minimal$ $tableaux$ as a family of tableaux naturally arising from order ideals and show for any $λ$, the almost minimal tableaux of shape $λ$ are in different (weak) $K$-Knuth equivalence classes. We also discuss and make some progress on related conjectures of Hopkins on down-degree homomesy.
The {0,1}-knapsack problem with qualitative levels
A variant of the classical knapsack problem is considered in which each item is associated with an integer weight and a qualitative level. We define a dominance relation over the feasible subsets of the given item set and show that this relation defines a preorder. We propose a dynamic programming algorithm to compute the entire set of non-dominated rank cardinality vectors and we state two greedy algorithms, which efficiently compute a single efficient solution.
Almost simple groups of Lie type and symmetric designs with $λ$ prime
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this article, we investigate symmetric $(v,k,λ)$ designs $\mathcal{D}$ with $λ$ prime admitting flag-transitive and point-primitive automorphism groups $G$. We prove that if $G$ is an almost simple group with socle a finite simple group of Lie type, then $\mathcal{D}$ is either the point-hyperplane design of a projective space $\mathrm{PG}_{n-1}(q)$, or it is of parameters $(7,4,2)$, $(11,5,2)$, $(11,6,2)$ or $(45,12,3)$.
Hurwitz Actions on Reflection Factorizations in Complex Reflection Group $G_6$
Published in Rose-Hulman Undergraduate Mathematics Journal: Vol. 22 : Iss. 2 , Article 6. 2021 • Search Publication
We show that in the complex reflection group $G_6$, reflection factorizations of a Coxeter element that have the same length and multiset of conjugacy classes are in the same Hurwitz orbit. This confirms one case of a conjecture of Lewis and Reiner.
An Optimal Decentralized $(Δ+ 1)$-Coloring Algorithm
Consider the following simple coloring algorithm for a graph on $n$ vertices. Each vertex chooses a color from $\{1, \dotsc, Δ(G) + 1\}$ uniformly at random. While there exists a conflicted vertex choose one such vertex uniformly at random and recolor it with a randomly chosen color. This algorithm was introduced by Bhartia et al. [MOBIHOC'16] for channel selection in WIFI-networks. We show that this algorithm always converges to a proper coloring in expected $O(n \log Δ)$ steps, which is optimal and proves a conjecture of Chakrabarty and Supinski [SOSA'20].

Affine Demazure crystals for specialized nonsymmetric Macdonald polynomials
Published in Algebr. Comb. 4 (2021), no 5, 777-793 • View Publication • BIB
We give a crystal-theoretic proof that nonsymmetric Macdonald polynomials specialized to $t=0$ are affine Demazure characters. We explicitly construct an affine Demazure crystal on semistandard key tabloids such that removing the affine edges recovers the finite Demazure crystals constructed earlier by the authors. We also realize the filtration on highest weight modules by Demazure modules by defining explicit embedding operators which, at the level of characters, parallels the recursion operators of Knop and Sahi for specialized nonsymmetric Macdonald polynomials. Thus we prove combinatorially in type A that every affine Demazure module admits a finite Demazure flag.

Maximizing Products of Linear Forms, and The Permanent of Positive Semidefinite Matrices
Published in Math. Program. (2021) • View Publication • BIB
We study the convex relaxation of a polynomial optimization problem, maximizing a product of linear forms over the complex sphere. We show that this convex program is also a relaxation of the permanent of Hermitian positive semidefinite (HPSD) matrices. By analyzing a constructive randomized rounding algorithm, we obtain an improved multiplicative approximation factor to the permanent of HPSD matrices, as well as computationally efficient certificates for this approximation. We also propose an analog of van der Waerden's conjecture for HPSD matrices, where the polynomial optimization problem is interpreted as a relaxation of the permanent.

A Strengthening of Erdős-Gallai Theorem and Proof of Woodall's Conjecture
Published in Journal of Combinatorial Theory, Series B Volume 146, January 2021, Pages 76--95 • View Publication • BIB
For a 2-connected graph $G$ on $n$ vertices and two vertices $x,y\in V(G)$, we prove that there is an $(x,y)$-path of length at least $k$ if there are at least $\frac{n-1}{2}$ vertices in $V(G)\backslash \{x,y\}$ of degree at least $k$. This strengthens a well-known theorem due to Erdős and Gallai in 1959. As the first application of this result, we show that a 2-connected graph with $n$ vertices contains a cycle of length at least $2k$ if it has at least $\frac{n}{2}+k$ vertices of degree at least $k$. This confirms a 1975 conjecture made by Woodall. As another applications, we obtain some results which generalize previous theorems of Dirac, Erdős-Gallai, Bondy, and Fujisawa et al., present short proofs of the path case of Loebl-Komlós-Sós Conjecture which was verified by Bazgan et al. and of a conjecture of Bondy on longest cycles (for large graphs) which was confirmed by Fraisse and Fournier, and make progress on a conjecture of Bermond.

On graphic splitting of regular matroids
Raghunathan at al. [9] introduced splitting operation with respect to a pair of element for binary matroid and characterized Eulerian binary matroids using it. In general, the splitting operation does not preserve the graphicness property of the given matroids. Shikare and Waphare [10] obtained the characterization for the class of graphic matroids which yield graphic matroids under the splitting operation with respect to a pair of elements. We study the effect of the splitting operation on regular matroids and characterize the class of regular matroids which yield graphic matroids under the splitting operation. We also provide an alternate and short proof to two of the known results.

Schur decomposition of several matrices
Published • View Publication • BIB
Schur decompositions and the corresponding Schur forms of a single matrix, a pair of matrices, or a collection of matrices associated with the periodic eigenvalue problem are frequently used and studied. These forms are upper-triangular complex matrices or quasi-upper-triangular real matrices that are equivalent to the original matrices via unitary or, respectively, orthogonal transformations. In general, for theoretical and numerical purposes we often need to reduce, by admissible transformations, a collection of matrices to the Schur form. Unfortunately, such a reduction is not always possible. In this paper we describe all collections of complex (real) matrices that can be reduced to the Schur form by the corresponding unitary (orthogonal) transformations and explain how such a reduction can be done. We prove that this class consists of the collections of matrices associated with pseudoforest graphs. In other words, we describe when the Schur form of a collection of matrices exists and how to find it.

Superbalance of Holographic Entropy Inequalities
Published • View Publication • BIB
The domain of allowed von Neumann entropies of a holographic field theory carves out a polyhedral cone -- the holographic entropy cone -- in entropy space. Such polyhedral cones are characterized by their extreme rays. For an arbitrary number of parties, it is known that the so-called perfect tensors are extreme rays. In this work, we constrain the form of the remaining extreme rays by showing that they correspond to geometries with vanishing mutual information between any two parties, ensuring the absence of Bell pair type entanglement between them. This is tantamount to proving that besides subadditivity, all non-redundant holographic entropy inequalities are superbalanced, i.e. not only do UV divergences cancel in the inequality itself (assuming smooth entangling surfaces), but also in the purification thereof.
Generalized Planar Turán Numbers
In a generalized Turán problem, we are given graphs $H$ and $F$ and seek to maximize the number of copies of $H$ in an $F$-free graph of order $n$. We consider generalized Turán problems where the host graph is planar. In particular we obtain the order of magnitude of the maximum number of copies of a fixed tree in a planar graph containing no even cycle of length at most $2\ell$, for all $\ell$, $\ell \geq 1$. We obtain the order of magnitude of the maximum number of cycles of a given length in a planar $C_4$-free graph. An exact result is given for the maximum number of $5$-cycles in a $C_4$-free planar graph. Multiple conjectures are also introduced.

Local WL Invariance and Hidden Shades of Regularity
The $k$-dimensional Weisfeiler-Leman algorithm is a powerful tool in graph isomorphism testing. For an input graph $G$, the algorithm determines a canonical coloring of $s$-tuples of vertices of $G$ for each $s$ between 1 and $k$. We say that a numerical parameter of $s$-tuples is $k$-WL-invariant if it is determined by the tuple color. As an application of Dvořák's result on $k$-WL-invariance of homomorphism counts, we spot some non-obvious regularity properties of strongly regular graphs and related graph families. For example, if $G$ is a strongly regular graph, then the number of paths of length 6 between vertices $x$ and $y$ in $G$ depends only on whether or not $x$ and $y$ are adjacent (and the length 6 is here optimal). Or, the number of cycles of length 7 passing through a vertex $x$ in $G$ is the same for every $x$ (where the length 7 is also optimal).

Root lattices in number fields
Published • View Publication • BIB
We explore whether a root lattice may be similar to the lattice $\mathscr O$ of integers of a number field $K$ endowed with the inner product $(x, y):={\rm Trace}_{K/\mathbb Q}(x\cdotθ(y))$, where $θ$ is an involution of $K$. We classify all pairs $K$, $θ$ such that $\mathscr O$ is similar to either an even root lattice or the root lattice $\mathbb Z^{[K:\mathbb Q]}$. We also classify all pairs $K$, $θ$ such that $\mathscr O$ is a root lattice. In addition to this, we show that $\mathscr O$ is never similar to a positive-definite even unimodular lattice of rank $\leqslant 48$, in particular, $\mathscr O$ is not similar to the Leech lattice. In appendix, we give a general cyclicity criterion for the primary components of the discriminant group of $\mathscr O$.

Perfect State Transfer on Oriented Graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Quantum walks on undirected graphs have been studied using symmetric matrices, such as the adjacency or Laplacian matrix, and many results about perfect state transfer are known. We extend some of those results to oriented graphs. We also study the phenomena, unique to oriented graphs, of multiple state transfer, where there is a set of vertices such that perfect state transfer occurs between every pair in that set. We give a characterization of multiple state transfer, and a new example of a graph where it occurs.

A Catlin-type Theorem for Graph Partitioning Avoiding Prescribed Subgraphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
As an extension of the Brooks theorem, Catlin in 1979 showed that if $H$ is neither an odd cycle nor a complete graph with maximum degree $Δ(H)$, then $H$ has a vertex $Δ(H)$-coloring such that one of the color classes is a maximum independent set. Let $G$ be a connected graph of order at least $2$. A $G$-free $k$-coloring of a graph $H$ is a partition of the vertex set of $H$ into $V_1,\ldots,V_k$ such that $H[V_i]$, the subgraph induced on $V_i$, does not contain any subgraph isomorphic to $G$. As a generalization of Catlin's theorem we show that a graph $H$ has a $G$-free $\lceil{Δ(H)\over δ(G)}\rceil$-coloring for which one of the color classes is a maximum $G$-free subset of $V(H)$ if $H$ satisfies the following conditions; (1) $H$ is not isomorphic to $G$ if $G$ is regular, (2) $H$ is not isomorphic to $K_{kδ(G)+1}$ if $G \simeq K_{δ(G)+1}$, and (3) $H$ is not an odd cycle if $G$ is isomorphic to $K_2$. Indeed, we show even more, by proving that if $G_1,\ldots,G_k$ are connected graphs with minimum degrees $d_1,\ldots,d_k$, respectively, and $Δ(H)=\sum_{i=1}^{k}d_k$, then there is a partition of vertices of $H$ to $V_1,\ldots,V_k$ such that each $H[V_i]$ is $G_i$-free and moreover one of $V_i$s can be chosen in a way that $H[V_i]$ is a maximum $G_i$-free subset of $V(H)$ except either $k=1$ and $H$ is isomorphic to $G_1$, each $G_i$ is isomorphic to $K_{d_i+1}$ and $H$ is not isomorphic to $K_{Δ(H)+1}$, or each $G_i$ is isomorphic to $K_{2}$ and $H$ is not an odd cycle.

Vertex cut of a graph and connectivity of its neighbourhood complex
Published in Discrete Mathematics, 2023 • View Publication • BIB
We show that if a graph $G$ satisfies certain conditions then the connectivity of neighbourhood complex $\mathcal{N}(G)$ is strictly less than the vertex connectivity of $G$. As an application, we give a relation between the connectivity of the neighbourhood complex and the vertex connectivity for stiff chordal graphs, and for weakly triangulated graphs satisfying certain properties. Further, we prove that for a graph $G$ if there exists a vertex $v$ satisfying the property that for any $k$-subset $S$ of neighbours of $v$, there exists a vertex $v_S \neq v$ such that $S$ is subset of neighbours of $v_S$, then $\mathcal{N}(G-\{v\})$ is $(k-1)$-connected implies that $\mathcal{N}(G)$ is $(k-1)$-connected. As a consequence of this, we show that:(i) neighbourhood complexes of queen and king graphs are simply connected and (ii) if $G$ is a $(n+1)$-connected chordal graph which is not folded onto a clique of size $n+2$, then $\mathcal{N}(G)$ is $n$-connected.
