Graph Burning: Tight Bounds on the Burning Numbers of Path Forests and Spiders
Published • View Publication • BIB
In 2016, Bonato, Janssen, and Roshanbin introduced graph burning as a discrete process that models the spread of social contagion. Although the burning process is a simple algorithm, the problem of determining the least number of rounds needed to completely burn a graph, called the burning number of the graph, is NP-complete even for elementary graph structures like spiders. An early conjecture that every connected graph of order square of m can be burned in at most m rounds is the main motivator of this study. Attempts to prove the conjecture have resulted in various upper bounds for the burning number and validation of the conjecture for certain elementary classes of graphs. In this work, we find a tight upper bound for the order of a spider for it to be burned within a given number of rounds. Our result shows that the tight bound depends on the structure of the spider under consideration, namely the number of arms. This strengthens the previously known results on spiders in relation to the conjecture. More importantly, this opens up potential enquiry into the connection between burning numbers and certain characteristics of graphs. Finally, a tight upper bound for the order of a path forest for it to be burned within a given number of rounds is obtained, thus completing previously known partial corresponding results.

Crystal structure on King tableaux and semistandard oscillating tableaux
Published • View Publication • BIB
In 1976, King defined certain tableaux model, called King tableaux in this paper, counting weight multiplicities of irreducible representation of the symplectic group $Sp(2m)$ for a given dominant weight. Since Kashiwara defined crystals, it is an open problem to provide a crystal structure on King tableaux. In this paper, we present crystal structures on King tableaux and semistandard oscillating tableaux. The semistandard oscillating tableaux naturally appear as $Q$-tableaux in the symplectic version of RSK algorithms. As an application, we discuss Littlewood-Richardson coefficients for $Sp(2m)$ in terms of semistandard oscillating tableaux.

Large Simple d-Cycles in Simplicial Complexes
Published • View Publication • BIB
We show that the size of the largest simple d-cycle in a simplicial d-complex $K$ is at least a square root of $K$'s density. This generalizes a well-known classical result of Erdős and Gallai \cite{EG59} for graphs. We use methods from matroid theory applied to combinatorial simplicial complexes.

Small families under subdivision
Let $H$ be a graph with maximum degree $d$, and let $d'\ge 0$. We show that for some $c>0$ depending on $H,d'$, and all integers $n\ge 0$, there are at most $c^n$ unlabelled simple $d$-connected $n$-vertex graphs with maximum degree at most $d'$ that do not contain $H$ as a subdivision. On the other hand, the number of unlabelled simple $(d-1)$-connected $n$-vertex graphs with minimum degree $d$ and maximum degree at most $d+1$ that do not contain $K_{d+1}$ as a subdivision is superexponential in $n$.

$q$-Analogues of Dwork-type supercongruences
Published • View Publication • BIB
In 1997, Van Hamme conjectured 13 Ramanujan-type supercongruences. All of the 13 supercongruences have been confirmed by using a wide range of methods. In 2015, Swisher conjectured Dwork-type supercongruences related to the first 12 supercongruences of Van Hamme. Here we prove that the (C.3) and (J.3) supercongruences of Swisher are true modulo $p^{3r}$ (the original modulus is $p^{4r}$) by establishing $q$-analogues of them. Our proof will use the creative microscoping method, recently introduced by the author in collaboration with Zudilin. We also raise conjectures on $q$-analogues of an equivalent form of the (M.2) supercongruence of Van Hamme, partially answering a question at the end of [Adv. Math. 346 (2019), 329--358].
Set systems related to a house allocation problem
We are given a set $A$ of buyers, a set $B$ of houses, and for each buyer a preference list, i.e., an ordering of the houses. A house allocation is an injective mapping $τ$ from $A$ to $B$, and $τ$ is strictly better than another house allocation $τ'\neq τ$ if for every buyer $i$, $τ'(i)$ does not come before $τ(i)$ in the preference list of $i$. A house allocation is Pareto optimal if there is no strictly better house allocation. Let $s(τ)$ be the image of $τ$ (i.e., the set of houses sold in the house allocation $τ$). We are interested in the largest possible cardinality $f(m)$ of the family of sets $s(τ)$ for Pareto optimal mappings $τ$ taken over all sets of preference lists of $m$ buyers. We improve the earlier upper bound on $f(m)$ given by Asinowski, Keszegh and Miltzow by making a connection between this problem and some problems in extremal set theory.

Mating of trees for random planar maps and Liouville quantum gravity: a survey
We survey the theory and applications of mating-of-trees bijections for random planar maps and their continuum analog: the mating-of-trees theorem of Duplantier, Miller, and Sheffield (2014). The latter theorem gives an encoding of a Liouville quantum gravity (LQG) surface decorated by a Schramm-Loewner evolution (SLE) curve in terms of a pair of correlated linear Brownian motions. We assume minimal familiarity with the theory of SLE and LQG. Mating-of-trees theory enables one to reduce problems about SLE and LQG to problems about Brownian motion and leads to deep rigorous connections between random planar maps and LQG. Applications discussed in this article include scaling limit results for various functionals of decorated random planar maps, estimates for graph distances and random walk on (not necessarily uniform) random planar maps, computations of the Hausdorff dimensions of sets associated with SLE, scaling limit results for random planar maps conformally embedded in the plane, and special symmetries for $\sqrt{8/3}$-LQG which allow one to prove its equivalence with the Brownian map.

Dynamics Near An Idempotent
Published in Topology and its Applications, Volume 282 (2020) 107328 • View Publication • BIB
Hindman and Leader first introduced the notion of semigroup of ultrafilters converging to zero for a dense subsemigroups of $((0,\infty),+)$. Using the algebraic structure of the Stone-$\breve{C}$ech compactification, Tootkabani and Vahed generalized and extended this notion to an idempotent instead of zero, that is a semigroup of ultrafilters converging to an idempotent $e$ for a dense subsemigroups of a semitopological semigroup $(T, +)$ and they gave the combinatorial proof of central set theorem near $e$. Algebraically one can also define quasi-central sets near $e$ for dense subsemigroups of $(T, +)$. In a dense subsemigroup of $(T,+)$, C-sets near $e$ are the sets, which satisfy the conclusions of the central sets theorem near $e$. S. K. Patra gave dynamical characterizations of these combinatorially rich sets near zero. In this paper we shall prove these dynamical characterizations for these combinatorially rich sets near $e$.

Almost square permutations are typically square
Published in Ann. Inst. H. Poincaré Probab. Statist. 57(4): 1834-1856 (November 2021) • View Publication • BIB
A record in a permutation is a maximum or a minimum, from the left or from the right. The entries of a permutation can be partitioned into two types: the ones that are records are called external points, the others are called internal points. Permutations without internal points have been studied under the name of square permutations. Here, we explore permutations with a fixed number of internals points, called almost square permutations. Unlike with square permutations, a precise enumeration for the total number of almost square permutations of size $n+k$ with exactly $k$ internal points is not known. However, using a probabilistic approach, we are able to determine the asymptotic enumeration. This allows us to describe the permuton limit of almost square permutations with $k$ internal points, both when $k$ is fixed and when $k$ tends to infinity along a negligible sequence with respect to the size of the permutation. Finally, we show that our techniques are quite general by studying the set of $321$-avoiding permutations of size $n$ with exactly $k$ additional internal points ($k$ fixed). In this case we obtain an interesting asymptotic enumeration in terms of the Brownian excursion area. As a consequence, we show that the points of a uniform permutation in this set concentrate on the diagonal and the fluctuations of these points converge in distribution to a biased Brownian excursion.

Monomial invariants applied to graph coloring
Published • View Publication • BIB
This article is built upon three main ideas. First, for a class of monomial ideals, it is proven that the multiplicity of an ideal equals the number of realizations of its codimension (an intuitive concept that we define later). Next, for an arbitrary graph G, we construct a monomial ideal M_G, and show that the chromatic number of G is equal to the codimension of M_G. Finally, for a class of graphs, we give a formula that computes the chromatic polynomial of G, evaluated at the chromatic number of G, in terms of the codimension and multiplicity of M_G. In particular, the formula applies to all graphs satisfying the Erdos-Faber-Lovász conjecture.

Semialgebraic methods and generalized sum-product phenomena
Published in Discrete Analysis 2022:18, 23 pp • Search Publication
For a bivariate $P(x,y) \in \mathbb{R}[x,y]\setminus (\mathbb{R}[x] \cup \mathbb{R}[y])$, our first result shows that for all finite $A \subseteq \mathbb{R}$, $|P(A,A)|\geq α|A|^{5/4}$ with $α=α(\mathrm{deg} P) \in \mathbb{R}^{>0}$ unless $$ P(x,y)=f(γu(x)+δu(y)) \text{ or } P(x,y)=f(u^m(x)u^n(y)) $$ for some univariate $f, u \in \mathbb{R}[t]\setminus \mathbb{R}$, constants $γ, δ\in \mathbb{R}^{\neq 0}$, and $m, n\in \mathbb{N}^{\geq 1}$. This resolves the symmetric nonexpanders classification problem proposed by de Zeeuw. Our second and third results are sum-product type theorems for two polynomials, generalizing the classical result by Erdos and Szemerédi as well as a theorem by Shen. We also obtained similar results for $\mathbb{C}$, and from this deduce results for fields of characteristic $0$ and fields of large prime characteristic. The proofs of our results use tools from semialgebraic/o-minimal geometry.
The Resolution of Keller's Conjecture
Published • View Publication • BIB
We consider three graphs, $G_{7,3}$, $G_{7,4}$, and $G_{7,6}$, related to Keller's conjecture in dimension 7. The conjecture is false for this dimension if and only if at least one of the graphs contains a clique of size $2^7 = 128$. We present an automated method to solve this conjecture by encoding the existence of such a clique as a propositional formula. We apply satisfiability solving combined with symmetry-breaking techniques to determine that no such clique exists. This result implies that every unit cube tiling of $\mathbb{R}^7$ contains a facesharing pair of cubes. Since a faceshare-free unit cube tiling of $\mathbb{R}^8$ exists (which we also verify), this completely resolves Keller's conjecture.
On Odd Rainbow Cycles in Edge-Colored Graphs
Published in European Journal of Combinatorics, Volume 94, May 2021, 103316 • View Publication • BIB
Let $G = (V, E)$ be an $n$-vertex edge-colored graph. In 2013, H. Li proved that if every vertex $v \in V$ is incident to at least $(n+1)/2$ distinctly colored edges, then $G$ admits a rainbow triangle. We prove that the same hypothesis ensures a rainbow $\ell$-cycle $C_{\ell}$ whenever $n \ge 432 \ell$. This result is sharp for all odd integers $\ell \geq 3$, and extends earlier work of the authors for when $\ell$ is even.

Deciding whether a Lattice has an Orthonormal Basis is in co-NP
We show that the problem of deciding whether a given Euclidean lattice L has an orthonormal basis is in NP and co-NP. Since this is equivalent to saying that L is isomorphic to the standard integer lattice, this problem is a special form of the Lattice Isomorphism Problem, which is known to be in the complexity class SZK.

Edge crossings in random linear arrangements
Published in J. Stat. Mech. (2020) 023403 • View Publication • BIB
In spatial networks vertices are arranged in some space and edges may cross. When arranging vertices in a 1-dimensional lattice edges may cross when drawn above the vertex sequence as it happens in linguistic and biological networks. Here we investigate the general of problem of the distribution of edge crossings in random arrangements of the vertices. We generalize the existing formula for the expectation of this number in random linear arrangements of trees to any network and derive an expression for the variance of the number of crossings in an arbitrary layout relying on a novel characterization of the algebraic structure of that variance in an arbitrary space. We provide compact formulae for the expectation and the variance in complete graphs, complete bipartite graphs, cycle graphs, one-regular graphs and various kinds of trees (star trees, quasi-star trees and linear trees). In these networks, the scaling of expectation and variance as a function of network size is asymptotically power-law-like in random linear arrangements. Our work paves the way for further research and applications in 1-dimension or investigating the distribution of the number of crossings in lattices of higher dimension or other embeddings.

A Classification of Autoparatopisms of Latin Cubes
A paratopism is an action on a Latin hypercube of dimension d and order n which is an element of the wreath product $S_n \wr S_{d+1}$. A paratopism is said to be an autoparatopism if there is at least one Latin hypercube which is mapped to itself under the action of the paratopism. In this paper we classify autoparatopisms of Latin cubes given d = 3 and $n \in \mathbb{Z^+}$, upto the conjugacy in $S_n \wr S_4$. In order to achieve this objective, we prove that given an autoparatopism $σ \in S_n \wr S_{d+1}$, all the conjugates of $σ$ are autoparatpisms. Also, an important condition is presented, which states that the cycle structure of the $δ$ in the element $σ= (α_1,α_2,α_3,α_4;δ)$ of $S_n \wr S_4$ determines the conjugacy.
At least half of the leapfrog fullerene graphs have exponentially many Hamilton cycles
A fullerene graph is a 3-connected cubic planar graph with pentagonal and hexagonal faces. The leapfrog transformation of a planar graph produces the trucation of the dual of the given graph. A fullerene graph is leapfrog if it can be obtained from another fullerene graph by the leapfrog transformation. We prove that leapfrog fullerene graphs on $n=12k-6$ vertices have at least $2^{k}$ Hamilton cycles.

Harnack Inequality for Magnetic Graphs
For magnetic graphs satisfying connection curvature dimension inequality $CD^σ(n,κ)$, we prove a Harnack-type inequality for eigenfunctions of the graph magnetic Laplace operator in the manner of work done by Chung, Lin, Yau in 2014. Then we look at two applications; first a lower bound for the least eigenvalue in terms of curvature and extremal path/degree quantities, then to the magnetic Cheeger number of the graph.
