Strong G-schemes and strict homomorphisms
Let $\mathfrak{P}_r$ be a representation system of the non-isomorphic finite posets, and let ${\cal H}(P,Q)$ be the set of order homomorphisms from $P$ to $Q$. For finite posets $R$ and $S$, we write $R \sqsubseteq_G S$ iff, for every $P \in \mathfrak{P}_r$, a one-to-one mapping $ρ_P : {\cal H}(P,R) \rightarrow {\cal H}(P,S)$ exists which fulfills a certain regularity condition. It is shown that $R \sqsubseteq_G S$ is equivalent to $\# {\cal S}(P,R) \leq \# {\cal S}(P,S)$ for every finite posets $P$, where ${\cal S}(P,Q)$ is the set of strict order homomorphisms from $P$ to $Q$. In consequence, $\# {\cal S}(P,R) = \# {\cal S}(P,S)$ holds for every finite posets $P$ iff $R$ and $S$ are isomorphic. A sufficient condition is derived for $R \sqsubseteq_G S$ which needs the inspection of a finite number of posets only. Additionally, a method is developed which facilitates for posets $P + Q$ (direct sum) the construction of posets $T$ with $P + Q \sqsubseteq_G A + T$, where $A$ is a convex subposet of $P$.

A New Formula of q-Fubini Numbers via Goncharov polynomials
Connected the generalized Goncharov polynomials associated to a pair ($\partial,\mathcal{Z}$) if a delta operator $\partial$ and an interpolation grid $\mathcal{Z}$, introduced by Lorentz, Tringali and Yan in [7], with the theory of binomial enumeration and order statistics, a new $q$-deformed of these polynomials given in this paper allows us to derive a new combinatorial formula of $q$-Fubini numbers. A combinatorial proof and some nice algebraic and analytic properties have been expanded to the $q$-deformed version.
Vector-relation configurations and plabic graphs
Published in Selecta Math. (N.S.), 30(1), #P9, 2024 • View Publication • BIB
We study a simple geometric model for local transformations of bipartite graphs. The state consists of a choice of a vector at each white vertex made in such a way that the vectors neighboring each black vertex satisfy a linear relation. Evolution for different choices of the graph coincides with many notable dynamical systems including the pentagram map, $Q$-nets, and discrete Darboux maps. On the other hand, for plabic graphs we prove unique extendability of a configuration from the boundary to the interior, an elegant illustration of the fact that Postnikov's boundary measurement map is invertible. In all cases there is a cluster algebra operating in the background, resolving the open question for $Q$-nets of whether such a structure exists.

Tropical geometry
Published • View Publication • BIB
Tropical mathematics redefines the rules of arithmetic by replacing addition with taking a maximum, and by replacing multiplication with addition. After briefly discussing a tropical version of linear algebra, we study polynomials build with these new operations. These equations define piecewise-linear geometric objects called tropical varieties. We explore these tropical varieties in two and three dimensions, building up discrete tools for studying them and determining their geometric properties. We then discuss the relationship between tropical geometry and algebraic geometry, which considers shapes defined by usual polynomial equations.

Paley type partial difference sets in abelian groups
Published • View Publication • BIB
Partial difference sets with parameters $(v,k,λ,μ)=(v, (v-1)/2, (v-5)/4, (v-1)/4)$ are called Paley type partial difference sets. In this note we prove that if there exists a Paley type partial difference set in an abelian group $G$ of an order not a prime power, then $|G|=n^4$ or $9n^4$, where $n>1$ is an odd integer. In 2010, Polhill \cite{Polhill} constructed Paley type partial difference sets in abelian groups with those orders. Thus, combining with the constructions of Polhill and the classical Paley construction using non-zero squares of a finite field, we completely answer the following question: "For which odd positive integer $v > 1$, can we find a Paley type partial difference set in an abelian group of order $v$?"

An Omega(n^2) Lower Bound for Random Universal Sets for Planar Graphs
A set $U\subseteq \reals^2$ is $n$-universal if all $n$-vertex planar graphs have a planar straight-line embedding into $U$. We prove that if $Q \subseteq \reals^2$ consists of points chosen randomly and uniformly from the unit square then $Q$ must have cardinality $Ω(n^2)$ in order to be $n$-universal with high probability. This shows that the probabilistic method, at least in its basic form, cannot be used to establish an $o(n^2)$ upper bound on universal sets.

On the 486-vertex distance-regular graphs of Koolen--Riebeek and Soicher
Published • View Publication • BIB
This paper considers three imprimitive distance-regular graphs with 486 vertices and diameter 4: the Koolen--Riebeek graph (which is bipartite), the Soicher graph (which is antipodal), and the incidence graph of a symmetric transversal design obtained from the affine geometry $\mathrm{AG}(5,3)$ (which is both). It is shown that each of these is preserved by the same rank-9 action of the group $3^5:(2\times M_{10})$, and the connection is explained using the ternary Golay code.

On sets of $n$ points in general position that determine lines that can be pierced by $n$ points
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $P$ be a set of $n$ points in general position in the plane. Let $R$ be a set of $n$ points disjoint from $P$ such that for every $x,y \in P$ the line through $x$ and $y$ contains a point in $R$ outside of the segment delimited by $x$ and $y$. We show that $P \cup R$ must be contained in a cubic curve.
On the 2-colored crossing number
Let $D$ be a straight-line drawing of a graph. The rectilinear 2-colored crossing number of $D$ is the minimum number of crossings between edges of the same color, taken over all possible 2-colorings of the edges of $D$. First, we show lower and upper bounds on the rectilinear 2-colored crossing number for the complete graph $K_n$. To obtain this result, we prove that asymptotic bounds can be derived from optimal and near-optimal instances with few vertices. We obtain such instances using a combination of heuristics and integer programming. Second, for any fixed drawing of $K_n$, we improve the bound on the ratio between its rectilinear 2-colored crossing number and its rectilinear crossing number.
On the local structure of oriented graphs -- a case study in flag algebras
Published in The Electronic Journal of Combinatorics, Volume 29 (2022), Issue 3, Article P3.39 • View Publication • BIB
Let $G$ be an $n$-vertex oriented graph. Let $t(G)$ (respectively $i(G)$) be the probability that a random set of $3$ vertices of $G$ spans a transitive triangle (respectively an independent set). We prove that $t(G) + i(G) \geq \frac{1}{9}-o_n(1)$. Our proof uses the method of flag algebras that we supplement with several steps that make it more easily comprehensible. We also prove a stability result and an exact result. Namely, we describe an extremal construction, prove that it is essentially unique, and prove that if $H$ is sufficiently far from that construction, then $t(H) + i(H)$ is significantly larger than $\frac{1}{9}$. We go to greater technical detail than is usually done in papers that rely on flag algebras. Our hope is that as a result this text can serve others as a useful introduction to this powerful and beautiful method.

Positional Voting and Doubly Stochastic Matrices
Published • View Publication • BIB
We provide elementary proofs of several results concerning the possible outcomes arising from a fixed profile within the class of positional voting systems. Our arguments enable a simple and explicit construction of paradoxical profiles, and we also demonstrate how to choose weights that realize desirable results from a given profile. The analysis ultimately boils down to thinking about positional voting systems in terms of doubly stochastic matrices.

The general spectral radius and majorization theorem of $t$-cone graphs with given degree sequences
The general spectral radius of a graph $G$, denoted by $Θ(G,α)$, is the maximal eigenvalue of $M_α(G)=A(G)+αD(G)$ $(α\geq 0)$, where $A(G)$ and $D(G)$ are the adjacency matrix and the diagonal matrix of vertex degrees of $G$, respectively. A graph $G$ is called $Θ_α$-maximal in a class of connected simple graphs $\mathcal {G}$ if $Θ(G,α)$ is maximal among all graphs of $\mathcal {G}$. A $t$-cone $c$-cyclic graph is the join of a complete graph $K_t$ and a $c$-cyclic connected simple graph. Let $π=\big(d_1,d_2,\ldots,d_n\big)$ and $π'=\big(d'_1,d'_2,\ldots,d'_n\big)$ be two non-increasing degree sequences of $t$-cone $c$-cyclic graphs with $n$ vertices. We say $π$ is strictly majorized by $π'$, denoted by $π\lhd π'$, if $π\neq π'$, $\sum_{i=1}^n d_i=\sum_{i=1}^n d_i'$, and $\sum_{i=1}^k d_i\leq \sum_{i=1}^k d_i'$ for $k=1,2,\ldots,n-1$. Denote by $Γ(π,t;c)$ the class of $t$-cone $c$-cyclic graphs with $π$ as its degree sequence. In this paper, we determine some properties of $Θ_α$-maximal graphs of $Γ(π,t;c)$ and characterize the unique $Θ_α$-maximal graph of $Γ(π,t;0)$ \big(resp. $Γ(π,t;1)$ and $Γ(π,t;2)$\big). Moreover, we prove that if $π\lhd π'$, $G$ and $G'$ are the $Θ_α$-maximal graphs of $Γ(π,t;c)$ and $Γ(π',t;c)$ respectively, then $Θ(G,α)<Θ(G',α)$ for $c\in \big\{0,1\big\}$, and we also consider the similar result for $c=2$.

Discrete and Fast Fourier Transform Made Clear
Fast Fourier transform was included in the Top 10 Algorithms of 20th Century by Computing in Science & Engineering. In this paper, we provide a new simple derivation of both the discrete Fourier transform and fast Fourier transform by means of elementary linear algebra. We start the exposition by introducing the convolution product of vectors, represented by a circulant matrix, and derive the discrete Fourier transform as the change of basis matrix that diagonalizes the circulant matrix. We also generalize our approach to derive the Fourier transform on any finite abelian group, where the case of Fourier transform on the Boolean cube is especially important for many applications in theoretical computer science.

Finding Hamiltonian and Longest (s, t)-paths of C-shaped Supergrid Graphs in Linear Time
Published • View Publication • BIB
A supergrid graph is a finite vertex-induced subgraph of the infinite graph whose vertex set consists of all points of the plane with integer coordinates and in which two vertices are adjacent if the difference of their x or y coordinates is not larger than 1. The Hamiltonian path (cycle) problem is to determine whether a graph contains a simple path (cycle) in which each vertex of the graph appears exactly once. This problem is NP-complete for general graphs and it is also NP-complete for general supergrid graphs. Despite the many applications of the problem, it is still open for many classes, including solid supergrid graphs and supergrid graphs with some holes. A graph is called Hamiltonian connected if it contains a Hamiltonian path between any two distinct vertices. In this paper, first we will study the Hamiltonian cycle property of C-shaped supergrid graphs, which are a special case of rectangular supergrid graphs with a rectangular hole. Next, we will show that C-shaped supergrid graphs are Hamiltonian connected except few conditions. Finally, we will compute a longest path between two distinct vertices in these graphs. The Hamiltonian connectivity of C-shaped supergrid graphs can be applied to compute the optimal stitching trace of computer embroidery machines, and construct the minimum printing trace of 3D printers with a C-like component being printed.
The stable set problem in graphs with bounded genus and bounded odd cycle packing number
Published • View Publication • BIB
Consider the family of graphs without $ k $ node-disjoint odd cycles, where $ k $ is a constant. Determining the complexity of the stable set problem for such graphs $ G $ is a long-standing problem. We give a polynomial-time algorithm for the case that $ G $ can be further embedded in a (possibly non-orientable) surface of bounded genus. Moreover, we obtain polynomial-size extended formulations for the respective stable set polytopes. To this end, we show that $2$-sided odd cycles satisfy the Erdős-Pósa property in graphs embedded in a fixed surface. This extends the fact that odd cycles satisfy the Erdős-Pósa property in graphs embedded in a fixed orientable surface (Kawarabayashi & Nakamoto, 2007). Eventually, our findings allow us to reduce the original problem to the problem of finding a minimum-cost non-negative integer circulation of a certain homology class, which turns out to be efficiently solvable in our case.

Quasirandom quantum channels
Published in Quantum 4, 298 (2020) • View Publication • BIB
Mixing (or quasirandom) properties of the natural transition matrix associated to a graph can be quantified by its distance to the complete graph. Different mixing properties correspond to different norms to measure this distance. For dense graphs, two such properties known as spectral expansion and uniformity were shown to be equivalent in seminal 1989 work of Chung, Graham and Wilson. Recently, Conlon and Zhao extended this equivalence to the case of sparse vertex transitive graphs using the famous Grothendieck inequality. Here we generalize these results to the non-commutative, or `quantum', case, where a transition matrix becomes a quantum channel. In particular, we show that for irreducibly covariant quantum channels, expansion is equivalent to a natural analog of uniformity for graphs, generalizing the result of Conlon and Zhao. Moreover, we show that in these results, the non-commutative and commutative (resp.) Grothendieck inequalities yield the best-possible constants.

Majorana fermions and the Sensitivity Conjecture
Recently, Hao Huang proved the Sensitivity Conjecture, an important result about complexity measures of Boolean functions. We will discuss how this simple and elegant proof turns out to be closely related to physics concepts of the Jordan-Wigner transformation and Majorana fermions. This note is not intended to contain original results. Instead, it is a translation of the math literature in a language that is more familiar to physicists, which helps our understanding and hopefully may inspire future works along this direction.

Asymptotic enumeration of linear hypergraphs with given number of vertices and edges
Published • View Publication • BIB
For $n\geq 3$, let $r=r(n)\geq 3$ be an integer. A hypergraph is $r$-uniform if each edge is a set of $r$ vertices, and is said to be linear if two edges intersect in at most one vertex. In this paper, the number of linear $r$-uniform hypergraphs on $n\to\infty$ vertices is determined asymptotically when the number of edges is $m(n)=o(r^{-3}n^{ \frac32})$. As one application, we find the probability of linearity for the independent-edge model of random $r$-uniform hypergraph when the expected number of edges is $o(r^{-3}n^{ \frac32})$. We also find the probability that a random $r$-uniform linear hypergraph with a given number of edges contains a given subhypergraph.
