Structural properties of non-crossing partitions from algebraic and geometric perspectives
Published • View Publication • BIB
The present thesis studies structural properties of non-crossing partitions associated to finite Coxeter groups from both algebraic and geometric perspectives. On the one hand, non-crossing partitions are lattices, and on the other hand, we can view them as simplicial complexes by considering their order complexes. We make use of these different interpretations and their interactions in various ways. The order complexes of non-crossing partitions have a rich geometric structure, which we investigate in this thesis. In particular, we interpret them as subcomplexes of spherical buildings. From a more algebraic viewpoint, we study automorphisms and anti-automorphisms of non-crossing partitions and their relation to building automorphisms. We also compute the automorphism groups of non-crossing partitions of type $B$ and $D$, provided that $n \neq 4$ for type $D$. For this, we introduce a new pictorial representation for type $D$. In type $A$ we study the structural properties of the order complex of the non-crossing partitions in more detail. In particular, we investigate the interaction of chamber distances and convex hulls in the non-crossing partition complex and the ambient spherical building. These questions are connected to the curvature conjecture of Brady and McCammond.

New bounds and constructions for constant weighted $X$-codes
As a crucial technique for integrated circuits (IC) test response compaction, $X$-compact employs a special kind of codes called $X$-codes for reliable compressions of the test response in the presence of unknown logic values ($X$s). From a combinatorial view point, Fujiwara and Colbourn \cite{FC2010} introduced an equivalent definition of $X$-codes and studied $X$-codes of small weights that have good detectability and $X$-tolerance. An $(m,n,d,x)$ $X$-code is an $m\times n$ binary matrix with column vectors as its codewords. The parameters $d,x$ correspond to the test quality of the code. In this paper, bounds and constructions for constant weighted $X$-codes are investigated. First, we obtain a general result on the maximum number of codewords $n$ for an $(m,n,d,x)$ $X$-code of weight $w$, and we further improve this lower bound for the case with $x=2$ and $w=3$ through the probabilistic method. Then, using tools from additive combinatorics and finite fields, we present some explicit constructions for constant weighted $X$-codes with $d=3,7$ and $x=2$, which are optimal for the case when $d=3, w=4$ and nearly optimal for the case when $d=3,w=3$. We also consider a special class of $X$-codes introduced in \cite{FC2010} and improve the best known lower bound on the maximum number of codewords for this kind of $X$-codes.

On Cayley graphs of basic algebraic structures
We present simple graph-theoretic characterizations of Cayley graphs for monoids, semigroups and groups. We extend these characterizations to commutative monoids, semilattices, and abelian groups.
New combinatorial interpretations of the binomial coefficients
Using generating functions and some trivial bijections, we show in this paper that the binomial coefficients count the set of (123,132) and (123,213)-avoiding permutations according to the number of crossings. We also define a q-tableau of power of two and prove that it counts the set of (213,312) and (132,312)-avoiding permutations according to the number of crossings.
Root Cones and the Resonance Arrangement
We study the connection between triangulations of a type $A$ root polytope and the resonance arrangement, a hyperplane arrangement that shows up in a surprising number of contexts. Despite an elementary definition for the resonance arrangement, the number of resonance chambers has only been computed up to the $n=8$ dimensional case. We focus on data structures for labeling chambers, such as sign vectors and sets of alternating trees, with an aim at better understanding the structure of the resonance arrangement, and, in particular, enumerating its chambers. Along the way, we make connections with similar (and similarly difficult) enumeration questions. With the root polytope viewpoint, we relate resonance chambers to the chambers of polynomiality of the Kostant partition function. With the hyperplane viewpoint, we clarify the connections between resonance chambers and threshold functions. In particular, we show that the base-2 logarithm of the number of resonance chambers is asymptotically $n^2$.
The mixing time of the switch Markov chains: a unified approach
Published in European Journal of Combinatorics 99 (2022) 103421 • View Publication • BIB
Since 1997 a considerable effort has been spent to study the mixing time of switch Markov chains on the realizations of graphic degree sequences of simple graphs. Several results were proved on rapidly mixing Markov chains on unconstrained, bipartite, and directed sequences, using different mechanisms. The aim of this paper is to unify these approaches. We will illustrate the strength of the unified method by showing that on any $P$-stable family of unconstrained/bipartite/directed degree sequences the switch Markov chain is rapidly mixing. This is a common generalization of every known result that shows the rapid mixing nature of the switch Markov chain on a region of degree sequences. Two applications of this general result will be presented. One is an almost uniform sampler for power-law degree sequences with exponent $γ>1+\sqrt{3}$. The other one shows that the switch Markov chain on the degree sequence of an Erdős-Rényi random graph $G(n,p)$ is asymptotically almost surely rapidly mixing if $p$ is bounded away from 0 and 1 by at least $\frac{5\log n}{n-1}$.

Large homogeneous submatrices
A matrix is homogeneous if all of its entries are equal. Let $P$ be a $2\times 2$ zero-one matrix that is not homogeneous. We prove that if an $n\times n$ zero-one matrix $A$ does not contain $P$ as a submatrix, then $A$ has an $cn\times cn$ homogeneous submatrix for a suitable constant $c>0$. We further provide an almost complete characterization of the matrices $P$ (missing only finitely many cases) such that forbidding $P$ in $A$ guarantees an $n^{1-o(1)}\times n^{1-o(1)}$ homogeneous submatrix. We apply our results to chordal bipartite graphs, totally balanced matrices, halfplane-arrangements and string graphs.

Counting Graph Homomorphisms Involving Complete Graphs
Published in Congressus Numerantium, 2017, volume 228 • Search Publication
In the branch of mathematics known as graph theory, graphs are considered as a set of points, called vertices, with connections between these points, called edges. The purpose of this paper is to study mappings between two graphs that have certain desirable properties, called graph homomorphisms, and the probability of such a mapping occurring. By using notions from graph theory and combinatorics, in this paper we prove several new theorems that place bounds on this probability for certain common classes of graphs such as Kn, and show that isolated vertices may safely be ignored.

Stability of Critical p-Improper Interval Graphs
Published in Congressus Numerantium, 2017, Volume 228 • Search Publication
A $p$-improper interval graph is an interval graph that has an interval representation in which no interval contains more than $p$ other intervals. A critical $p$-improper interval graph is $p-1$ improper when any vertex is removed. In this paper we investigate the spectrum of impropriety of critical $p$-improper interval graphs upon the removal of a single vertex, which is informally known as the stability of the graph.

Matrix scaling limits in finitely many iterations
Published in in: Combinatorial and Additive Number Theory III, Springer, New York, 2020, pp. 161--167 • View Publication • BIB
The alternate row and column scaling algorithm applied to a positive $n\times n$ matrix $A$ converges to a doubly stochastic matrix $S(A)$, sometimes called the \emph{Sinkhorn limit} of $A$. For every positive integer $n$, a two parameter family of row but not column stochastic $n\times n$ positive matrices is constructed that become doubly stochastic after exactly one column scaling.

A generalization of Edelman--Greene insertion for Schubert polynomials
Edelman and Greene generalized the Robinson--Schensted--Knuth correspondence to reduced words in order to give a bijective proof of the Schur positivity of Stanley symmetric functions. Stanley symmetric functions may be regarded as the stable limits of Schubert polynomials, and similarly Schur functions may be regarded as the stable limits of Demazure characters for the general linear group. We modify the Edelman--Greene correspondence to give an analogous, explicit formula for the Demazure character expansion of Schubert polynomials. Our techniques utilize dual equivalence and its polynomial variation, but here we demonstrate how to extract explicit formulas from that machinery which may be applied to other positivity problems as well.

Complementary Graphs with Flows Less Than Three
X. Hou, H.-J. Lai, P. Li and C.-Q. Zhang [J. Graph Theory 69 (2012) 464-470] showed that for a simple graph $G$ with $|V(G)|\ge 44$, if $\min\{δ(G),δ(G^c)\}\ge 4$, then either $G$ or its complementary graph $G^c$ has a nowhere-zero $3$-flow. In this paper, we improve this result by showing that if $|V(G)|\ge 32$ and $\min\{δ(G),δ(G^c)\}\ge 4$, then either $G$ or $G^c$ has flow index strictly less than $3$. Our result is proved by a newly developed closure operation and contraction method.

Measuring the non-Gorenstein locus of Hibi rings and normal affine semigroup rings
Published in Journal of Algebra 540 (2019), 78-99 • View Publication • BIB
The trace of the canonical module of a Cohen-Macaulay ring describes its non-Gorenstein locus. We study the trace of the canonical module of a Segre product of algebras, and we apply our results to compute the non-Gorenstein locus of toric rings. We provide several sufficient and necessary conditions for Hibi rings and normal semigroup rings to be Gorenstein on the punctured spectrum.
On Density-Critical Matroids
Published in Electronic Journal of Combinatorics 27 (2020), Paper 2.35, 16pp • View Publication • BIB
For a matroid $M$ having $m$ rank-one flats, the density $d(M)$ is $\tfrac{m}{r(M)}$ unless $m = 0$, in which case $d(M)= 0$. A matroid is density-critical if all of its proper minors of non-zero rank have lower density. By a 1965 theorem of Edmonds, a matroid that is minor-minimal among simple matroids that cannot be covered by $k$ independent sets is density-critical. It is straightforward to show that $U_{1,k+1}$ is the only minor-minimal loopless matroid with no covering by $k$ independent sets. We prove that there are exactly ten minor-minimal simple obstructions to a matroid being able to be covered by two independent sets. These ten matroids are precisely the density-critical matroids $M$ such that $d(M) > 2$ but $d(N) \le 2$ for all proper minors $N$ of $M$. All density-critical matroids of density less than $2$ are series-parallel networks. For $k \ge 2$, although finding all density-critical matroids of density at most $k$ does not seem straightforward, we do solve this problem for $k=\tfrac{9}{4}$.

Metrics which turn tilings into binary perfect codes
In this work, we consider tilings of the Hamming cube and look for metrics which turn the tilings into a perfect code. We consider the family of metrics which are determined by a weight and are compatible with the support of vectors (TS-metrics). We determine which of the tilings with small tiles or high rank can be a perfect code for some TS-metric and we characterize all such metrics. Finally, we show some procedures to obtain new perfect codes (relatively to TS-metrics) out of existing ones.
Point-ellipse and some other exotic configurations
In this paper we introduce point-ellipse configurations and point-conic configurations. We study some of their basic properties and describe two interesting families of balanced point-ellipse, respectively point-conic $6$-configurations. The construction of the first family is based on Carnot's theorem, whilst the construction of the second family is based on the Cartesian product of two regular polygons. Finally, we investigate a point-ellipse configuration based on the regular $24$-cell.

On polynomial-time solvable linear Diophantine problems
Published in Moscow J. Comb. Number Th. 8 (2019) 357-365 • View Publication • BIB
We obtain a polynomial-time algorithm that, given input (A, b), where A=(B|N) is an integer mxn matrix, m<n, with nonsingular mxm submatrix B and b is an m-dimensional integer vector, finds a nonnegative integer solution to the system Ax=b or determines that no such solution exists, provided that b is located sufficiently "deep" in the cone generated by the columns of B. This result improves on some of the previously known conditions that guarantee polynomial-time solvability of linear Diophantine problems.

Modified log-Sobolev inequalities for strongly log-concave distributions
We show that the modified log-Sobolev constant for a natural Markov chain which converges to an $r$-homogeneous strongly log-concave distribution is at least $1/r$. Applications include a sharp mixing time bound for the bases-exchange walk for matroids, and a concentration bound for Lipschitz functions over these distributions.
Strong cliques and forbidden cycles
Given a graph $G$, the strong clique number $ω_2'(G)$ of $G$ is the cardinality of a largest collection of edges every pair of which are incident or connected by an edge in $G$. We study the strong clique number of graphs missing some set of cycle lengths. For a graph $G$ of large enough maximum degree $Δ$, we show among other results the following: $ω_2'(G)\le5Δ^2/4$ if $G$ is triangle-free; $ω_2'(G)\le3(Δ-1)$ if $G$ is $C_4$-free; $ω_2'(G)\leΔ^2$ if $G$ is $C_{2k+1}$-free for some $k\ge 2$. These bounds are attained by natural extremal examples. Our work extends and improves upon previous work of Faudree, Gyárfás, Schelp and Tuza (1990), Mahdian (2000) and Faron and Postle (2019). We are motivated by the corresponding problems for the strong chromatic index.

Disjoint dominating and 2-dominating sets in graphs
A graph $G$ is a $D\!D_2$-graph if it has a pair $(D,D_2)$ of disjoint sets of vertices of $G$ such that $D$ is a dominating set and $D_2$ is a 2-dominating set of $G$. We provide several characterizations and hardness results concerning $D\!D_2$-graphs.
