Identities on Factorial Grothendieck Polynomials
Gustafson and Milne proved an identity on the Schur function indexed by a partition of the form $(λ_1-n+k,λ_2-n+k,\ldots,λ_k-n+k)$. On the other hand, Fehér, Némethi and Rimányi found an identity on the Schur function indexed by a partition of the form $(m-k,\ldots,m-k, λ_1,\ldots,λ_k)$. Fehér, Némethi and Rimányi gave a geometric explanation of their identity, and they raised the question of finding a combinatorial proof. In this paper, we establish a Gustafson-Milne type identity as well as a Fehér-Némethi-Rimányi type identity for factorial Grothendieck polynomials. Specializing a factorial Grothendieck polynomial to a Schur function, we obtain a combinatorial proof of the Fehér-Némethi-Rimányi identity.

Robust Multicovers with Budgeted Uncertainty
Published • View Publication • BIB
The Min-$q$-Multiset Multicover problem presented in this paper is a special version of the Multiset Multicover problem. For a fixed positive integer $q$, we are given a finite ground set $J$, an integral demand for each element in $J$ and a collection of subsets of $J$. The task is to choose sets of the collection (multiple choices are allowed) such that each element in $J$ is covered at least as many times as specified by the demand of the element. In contrast to Multiset Multicover, in Min-$q$-Multiset Multicover each of the chosen subsets may only cover up to $q$ of its elements with multiple choices being allowed. Our main focus is a robust version of Min-$q$-Multiset Multicover, called Robust Min-$q$-Multiset Multicover, in which the demand of each element in $J$ may vary in a given interval with an additional budget constraint bounding the sum of the demands. Again, the task is to find a selection of subsets which is feasible for all admissible demands. We show that the non-robust version is NP-complete for $q$ greater than two, whereas the robust version is strongly NP-hard for any positive $q$. Furthermore, we present two solution approaches based on constraint generation and investigate the corresponding separation problems. We present computational results using randomly generated instances as well as instances emerging from the problem of locating emergency doctors.

Towards the average-case analysis of substitution resolution in $λ$-calculus
Substitution resolution supports the computational character of $β$-reduction, complementing its execution with a capture-avoiding exchange of terms for bound variables. Alas, the meta-level definition of substitution, masking a non-trivial computation, turns $β$-reduction into an atomic rewriting rule, despite its varying operational complexity. In the current paper we propose a somewhat indirect average-case analysis of substitution resolution in the classic $λ$-calculus, based on the quantitative analysis of substitution in $λ\upsilon$, an extension of $λ$-calculus internalising the $\upsilon$-calculus of explicit substitutions. Within this framework, we show that for any fixed $n \geq 0$, the probability that a uniformly random, conditioned on size, $λ\upsilon$-term $\upsilon$-normalises in $n$ normal-order (i.e. leftmost-outermost) reduction steps tends to a computable limit as the term size tends to infinity. For that purpose, we establish an effective hierarchy $\left(\mathscr{G}_n\right)_n$ of regular tree grammars partitioning $\upsilon$-normalisable terms into classes of terms normalising in $n$ normal-order rewriting steps. The main technical ingredient in our construction is an inductive approach to the construction of $\mathscr{G}_{n+1}$ out of $\mathscr{G}_n$ based, in turn, on the algorithmic construction of finite intersection partitions, inspired by Robinson's unification algorithm. Finally, we briefly discuss applications of our approach to other term rewriting systems, focusing on two closely related formalisms, i.e. the full $λ\upsilon$-calculus and combinatory logic.

Disturbing the Dyson Conjecture (in a GOOD Way)
Published in Experimental Mathematics 15 (2006) 187--191 • View Publication • BIB
We present a case study in {\it experimental} yet {\it rigorous} mathematics by describing an algorithm, fully implemented in both Mathematica and Maple, that {\it automatically conjectures}, and then {\it automatically proves}, closed-form expressions extending Dyson's celebrated constant term conjecture.
On generalized Lyndon words
A generalized lexicographical order on infinite words is defined by choosing for each position a total order on the alphabet. This allows to define generalized Lyndon words. Every word in the free monoid can be factorized in a unique way as a nonincreasing factorization of generalized Lyndon words. We give new characterizations of the first and the last factor in this factorization as well as new characterization of generalized Lyndon words. We also give more specific results on two special cases: the classical one and the one arising from the alternating lexicographical order.

On representation theory of partition algebras for complex reflection groups
Published in Algebraic Combinatorics, 3(2):389-432, 2020 • View Publication • BIB
This paper defines the partition algebra for complex reflection group $G(r,p,n)$ acting on $k$-fold tensor product $(\mathbb{C}^n)^{\otimes k}$, where $\mathbb{C}^n$ is the reflection representation of $G(r,p,n)$. A basis of the centralizer algebra of this action of $G(r,p,n)$ was given by Tanabe and for $p =1$, the corresponding partition algebra was studied by Orellana. We also establish a subalgebra as partition algebra of a subgroup of $G(r,p,n)$ acting on $(\mathbb{C}^n)^{\otimes k}$. We call these algebras as Tanabe algebras. The aim of this paper is to study representation theory of Tanabe algebras: parametrization of their irreducible modules, and construction of Bratteli diagram for the tower of Tanabe algebras. We conclude the paper by giving Jucys-Murphy elements of Tanabe algebras and their actions on the Gelfand-Tsetlin basis, determined by this multiplicity free tower, of irreducible modules.

Finding Tutte paths in linear time
It is well-known that every planar graph has a Tutte path, i.e., a path $P$ such that any component of $G-P$ has at most three attachment points on $P$. However, it was only recently shown that such Tutte paths can be found in polynomial time. In this paper, we give a new proof that 3-connected planar graphs have Tutte paths, which leads to a linear-time algorithm to find Tutte paths. Furthermore, our Tutte path has special properties: it visits all exterior vertices, all components of $G-P$ have exactly three attachment points, and we can assign distinct representatives to them that are interior vertices. Finally, our running time bound is slightly stronger; we can bound it in terms of the degrees of the faces that are incident to $P$. This allows us to find some applications of Tutte paths (such as binary spanning trees and 2-walks) in linear time as well.
An improved diameter bound for finite simple groups of Lie type
Published • View Publication • BIB
For a finite group $G$, let $\mathrm{diam}(G)$ denote the maximum diameter of a connected Cayley graph of $G$. A well-known conjecture of Babai states that $\mathrm{diam}(G)$ is bounded by ${(\log_{2} |G|)}^{O(1)}$ in case $G$ is a non-abelian finite simple group. Let $G$ be a finite simple group of Lie type of Lie rank $n$ over the field $F_{q}$. Babai's conjecture has been verified in case $n$ is bounded, but it is wide open in case $n$ is unbounded. Recently, Biswas and Yang proved that $\mathrm{diam}(G)$ is bounded by $q^{O( n {(\log_{2}n + \log_{2}q)}^{3})}$. We show that in fact $\mathrm{diam}(G) < q^{O(n {(\log_{2}n)}^{2})}$ holds. Note that our bound is significantly smaller than the order of $G$ for $n$ large, even if $q$ is large. As an application, we show that more generally $\mathrm{diam}(H) < q^{O( n {(\log_{2}n)}^{2})}$ holds for any subgroup $H$ of $\mathrm{GL}(V)$, where $V$ is a vector space of dimension $n$ defined over the field $F_q$.

The combinatorics of MacMahon's partial fractions
Published in Annals of Combinatorics 23 (2019) 1073-1086 • View Publication • BIB
MacMahon showed that the generating function for partitions into at most $k$ parts can be decomposed into a partial fractions-type sum indexed by the partitions of $k$. In this present work, a generalization of MacMahon's result is given, which in turn provides a full combinatorial explanation.

Parity-Unimodality and a Cyclic Sieving Phenomenon for Necklaces
We discuss two surprising properties of a family of polynomials that generalize the Mahonian $q$-Catalan polynomials, and more generally the $q$-Schröder polynomials. By interpreting them as $\mathfrak{sl}_2$-characters, we show that the rational $q$-Schröder polynomials are parity-unimodal, which means that the even- and odd-degree coefficients are separately unimodal. Second, we show that they exhibit a $q=-1$ phenomenon. This is a special case of a more general cyclic sieving phenomenon for certain transitive $S_n$-actions, deduced from Molien's formula.

A classification of monotone ribbons with full Schur support with application to the classification of full equivalence classes
We consider ribbon shapes, not necessarily connected, whose rows, with at least two boxes in each, are in monotone length order. These ribbons are uniquely defined by a pair of partitions: the row partition consisting of the row lengths in decreasing order, and the overlapping partition whose entries count the total number of columns with two boxes in the successive ribbon shapes obtained by sequentially subtracting the longest row. The support of such ribbon Schur functions, considered as a subposet of the dominance order lattice on partitions, has the row partition as bottom element, and, as top element, the partition whose two parts consist of the total number of columns, and the total number of columns of length two respectively. We give a complete system of linear inequalities in terms of the partition pair defining the aforesaid ribbon shape under which the ribbon Schur function attains all the Schur interval when expanded in the basis of Schur functions. We then conclude that the Gaetz-Hardt-Sridhar necessary condition for a connected ribbon to have full equivalence class is equivalent to the condition for a monotone connected ribbon to have full Schur support. That is, the set of partitions with full equivalence class is a subset of those monotone connected ribbons with full Schur support. M. Gaetz, W. Hardt and S. Sridhar conjectured that the necessary condition is also sufficient which translates now to every monotone connected ribbon with full Schur support has full equivalence class. The main tool of our analysis is the structure of the companion tableau of a ribbon Littlewood-Richardson (LR) tableau detected by the descent set defined by the composition whose parts are the ribbon row lengths.

Stability of the centers of the symplectic groups rings $\matbb{Z}[Sp_{2n}(q)]$
We investigate the structure constants of the center $\mathcal{H}_n$ of the group algebra $Sp_{n}(q)$ over a finite field. The reflection length on the group $GL_{2n}(q)$ induces a filtration on the algebras $\mathcal{H}_n$. We prove that the structure constants of the associated filtered algebra $\mathcal{S}_n$ are independent of $n$. As a technical tool in the proof, we determine the growth of the centralizers under the embedding $Sp_m(q)\subset Sp_{m+l}(q)$ and we show that the index of the centralizer of $g\in Sp_m(q)$ in the centralizer of $g\in Sp_{m+k}$ is equal to $q^{2ld}|Sp_{r+l}(q)||Sp_{r}(q)|^{-1}$ for some $d$ and $r$ which are uniquely determined by the conjugacy class of $g$ in $GL_{2n}(q).$

Complexity of circulant graphs with non-fixed jumps, its arithmetic properties and asymptotics
In the present paper, we investigate a family of circulant graphs with non-fixed jumps $$G_n=C_{βn}(s_1, \ldots,s_k,α_1n,\ldots,α_\ell n),\, 1\le s_1<\ldots<s_k\le[\frac{βn}{2}],\, 1\le α_1< \ldots<α_\ell\le[\fracβ{2}].$$ Here $n$ is an arbitrary large natural number and integers $s_1, \ldots,s_k,α_1, \ldots,α_\ell$ are supposed to be fixed. First, we present an explicit formula for the number of spanning trees in the graph $G_n.$ This formula is a product of $βs_k-1$ factors, each given by the $n$-th Chebyshev polynomial of the first kind evaluated at the roots of some prescribed polynomial of degree $s_k.$ Next, we provide some arithmetic properties of the complexity function. We show that the number of spanning trees in $G_n$ can be represented in the form $τ(n)=p \,n \,a(n)^2,$ where $a(n)$ is an integer sequence and $p$ is a prescribed natural number depending of parity of $β$ and $n.$ Finally, we find an asymptotic formula for $τ(n)$ through the Mahler measure of the Laurent polynomials differing by a constant from $2k-\sum\limits_{i=1}^k(z^{s_i}+z^{-s_i}).$

The cyclic index of adjacency tensor of generalized power hypergraphs
Published in Discrete Mathematics, Volume 344, Issue 5, 2021, 112329 • View Publication • BIB
Let $G$ be a $t$-uniform hypergraph, and let $c(G)$ denote the cyclic index of the adjacency tensor of $G$. Let $m,s,t$ be positive integers such that $t \ge 2$, $s \ge 2$ and $m=st$. The generalized power $G^{m,s}$ of $G$ is obtained from $G$ by blowing up each vertex into an $s$-set and preserving the adjacency relation. It was conjectured that $c(G^{m,s})=s \cdot c(G)$. In this paper we show that the conjecture is false by giving a counterexample, and give some sufficient conditions for the conjecture holding. Finally we give an equivalent characterization of the equality in the conjecture by using a matrix equation over $\mathbb{Z}_m$.

Unimodal Sequence Generating Functions Arising from Partition Ranks
In this paper we study generating functions resembling the rank of strongly unimodal sequences. We give combinatorial interpretations, identities in terms of mock modular forms, asymptotics, and a parity result. Our functions imitate a relation between the rank of strongly unimodal sequences and the rank of integer partitions.

Stability of depth and Stanley depth of symbolic powers of squarefree monomial ideals
Let $\mathbb{K}$ be a field and $S=\mathbb{K}[x_1,\dots,x_n]$ be the polynomial ring in $n$ variables over $\mathbb{K}$. Assume that $I\subset S$ is a squarefree monomial ideal. For every integer $k\geq 1$, we denote the $k$-th symbolic power of $I$ by $I^{(k)}$. Recently, Montaño and Núñez-Betancourt \cite{mn} proved that for every pair of integers $m, k\geq 1$,$${\rm depth}(S/I^{(m)})\leq {\rm depth}(S/I^{(\lceil\frac{m}{k}\rceil)}).$$We provide an alternative proof for this inequality. Moreover, we reprove the known results that the sequence $\{{\rm depth}(S/I^{(k)})\}_{k=1}^{\infty}$ is convergent and$$\min_k{\rm depth}(S/I^{(k)})=\lim_{k\rightarrow \infty}{\rm depth}(S/I^{(k)})=n-\ell_s(I),$$where $\ell_s(I)$ denotes the symbolic analytic spread of $I$. We also determine an upper bound for the index of depth stability of symbolic powers of $I$. Next, we consider the Stanley depth of symbolic powers and prove that the sequences $\{{\rm sdepth}(S/I^{(k)})\}_{k=1}^{\infty}$ and $\{{\rm sdepth}(I^{(k)})\}_{k=1}^{\infty}$ are convergent and the limit of each sequence is equal to its minimum. Furthermore, we determine an upper bound for the indices of sdepth stability of symbolic powers.
On the adjacency matrix of a complex unit gain graph
A complex unit gain graph is a simple graph in which each orientation of an edge is given a complex number with modulus 1 and its inverse is assigned to the opposite orientation of the edge. In this article, first we establish bounds for the eigenvalues of the complex unit gain graphs. Then we study some of the properties of the adjacency matrix of complex unit gain graph in connection with the characteristic and the permanental polynomials. Then we establish spectral properties of the adjacency matrices of complex unit gain graphs. In particular, using Perron-Frobenius theory, we establish a characterization for bipartite graphs in terms of the set of eigenvalues of gain graph and the set of eigenvalues of the underlying graph. Also, we derive an equivalent condition on the gain so that the eigenvalues of the gain graph and the eigenvalues of the underlying graph are the same.
Derivated sequences of complementary symmetric Rote sequences
Complementary symmetric Rote sequences are binary sequences which have factor complexity $\mathcal{C}(n) = 2n$ for all integers $n \geq 1$ and whose languages are closed under the exchange of letters. These sequences are intimately linked to Sturmian sequences. Using this connection we investigate the return words and the derivated sequences to the prefixes of any complementary symmetric Rote sequence $\mathbf{v}$ which is associated with a standard Sturmian sequence $\mathbf{u}$. We show that any non-empty prefix of $\mathbf{v}$ has three return words. We prove that any derivated sequence of $\mathbf{v}$ is coding of three interval exchange transformation and we determine the parameters of this transformation. We also prove that $\mathbf{v}$ is primitive substitutive if and only if $\mathbf{u}$ is primitive substitutive. Moreover, if the sequence $\mathbf{u}$ is a fixed point of a primitive morphism, then all derivated sequences of $\mathbf{v}$ are also fixed by primitive morphisms. In that case we provide an algorithm for finding these fixing morphisms.
