Some conjectures on the Schur expansion of Jack polynomials
Published • View Publication • BIB
We present positivity conjectures for the Schur expansion of Jack symmetric functions in two bases given by binomial coefficients. Partial results suggest that there are rich combinatorics to be found in these bases, including Eulerian numbers, Stirling numbers, quasi-Yamanouchi tableaux, and rook boards. These results also lead to further conjectures about the fundamental quasisymmetric expansions of these bases, which we prove for special cases.

Coherent systems of probability measures on graphs for representations of free Frobenius towers
First formally defined by Borodin and Olshanski, a coherent system on a graded graph is a sequence of probability measures which respect the action of certain down/up transition functions between graded components. In one common example of such a construction, each measure is the Plancherel measure for the symmetric group $S_{n}$ and the down transition function is induced from the inclusions $S_{n} \hookrightarrow S_{n+1}$. In this paper we generalize the above framework to the case where $\{A_n\}_{n \geq 0}$ is any free Frobenius tower and $A_n$ is no longer assumed to be semisimple. In particular, we describe two coherent systems on graded graphs defined by the representation theory of $\{A_n\}_{n \geq 0}$ and connect one of these systems to a family of central elements of $\{A_n\}_{n \geq 0}$. When the algebras $\{A_n\}_{n \geq 0}$ are not semisimple, the resulting coherent systems reflect the duality between simple $A_n$-modules and indecomposable projective $A_n$-modules.

Antimagic orientations of disconnected even regular graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
A $labeling$ of a digraph $D$ with $m$ arcs is a bijection from the set of arcs of $D$ to $\{1,2,\ldots,m\}$. A labeling of $D$ is $antimagic$ if no two vertices in $D$ have the same vertex-sum, where the vertex-sum of a vertex $u \in V(D)$ for a labeling is the sum of labels of all arcs entering $u$ minus the sum of labels of all arcs leaving $u$. An antimagic orientation $D$ of a graph $G$ is $antimagic$ if $D$ has an antimagic labeling. Hefetz, M$\ddot{u}$tze and Schwartz in [J. Graph Theory 64(2010)219-232] raised the question: Does every graph admits an antimagic orientation? It had been proved that for any integer $d$, every 2$d$-regular graph with at most two odd components has an antimagic orientation. In this paper, we consider the 2$d$-regular graph with many odd components. We show that every 2$d$-regular graph with any odd components has an antimagic orientation provide each odd component with enough order.

Cheeger estimates of Dirichlet-to-Neumann operators on infinite subgraphs of graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper, we study the Dirichlet-to-Neumann operators on infinite subgraphs of graphs. For an infinite graph, we prove Cheeger-type estimates for the bottom spectrum of the Dirichlet-to-Neumann operator, and the higher order Cheeger estimates for higher order eigenvalues of the Dirichlet-to-Neumann operator.

It is established that for any finite set of positive real numbers $A$, we have $$|A/A+A| \gg \frac{|A|^{\frac{3}{2}+\frac{1}{26}}}{\log^{1/2}|A|}.$$
Vertex connectivity of the power graph of a finite cyclic group II
Published • View Publication • BIB
The power graph $\mathcal{P}(G)$ of a given finite group $G$ is the simple undirected graph whose vertices are the elements of $G$, in which two distinct vertices are adjacent if and only if one of them can be obtained as an integral power of the other. The vertex connectivity $κ(\mathcal{P}(G))$ of $\mathcal{P}(G)$ is the minimum number of vertices which need to be removed from $G$ so that the induced subgraph of $\mathcal{P}(G)$ on the remaining vertices is disconnected or has only one vertex. For a positive integer $n$, let $C_n$ be the cyclic group of order $n$. Suppose that the prime power decomposition of $n$ is given by $n =p_1^{n_1}p_2^{n_2}\cdots p_r^{n_r}$, where $r\geq 1$, $n_1,n_2,\ldots, n_r$ are positive integers and $p_1,p_2,\ldots,p_r$ are prime numbers with $p_1<p_2<\cdots <p_r$. The vertex connectivity $κ(\mathcal{P}(C_n))$ of $\mathcal{P}(C_n)$ is known for $r\leq 3$, see \cite{panda, cps}. In this paper, for $r\geq 4$, we give a new upper bound for $κ(\mathcal{P}(C_n))$ and determine $κ(\mathcal{P}(C_n))$ when $n_r\geq 2$. We also determine $κ(\mathcal{P}(C_n))$ when $n$ is a product of distinct prime numbers.

Periodic triangulations of $\mathbb{Z}^n$
Published in Electronic J. Comb, 27:2 (2020), P2.36 • View Publication • BIB
We consider in this work triangulations of $\mathbb{Z}^n$ that are periodic along $\mathbb{Z}^n$. They generalize the triangulations obtained from Delaunay tessellations of lattices. Other important property is the regularity and central-symmetry property of triangulations. Full enumeration for dimension at most $4$ is obtained. In dimension $5$ several new phenomena happen: there are centrally-symmetric triangulations that are not Delaunay, there are non-regular triangulations (it could happen in dimension $4$) and a given simplex has a priori an infinity of possible adjacent simplices. We found $950$ periodic triangulations in dimension $5$ but finiteness is unknown.

Spectral gap bounds for the simplicial Laplacian and an application to random complexes
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this article, we derive two spectral gap bounds for the reduced Laplacian of a general simplicial complex. Our two bounds are proven by comparing a simplicial complex in two different ways with a larger complex and with the corresponding clique complex respectively. Both of these bounds generalize the result of Aharoni et al. (2005) \cite{ABM} which is valid only for clique complexes. As an application, we investigate the thresholds for vanishing of cohomology of the neighborhood complex of the Erdös-Rényi random graph. We improve the upper bound derived in Kahle (2007) \cite{kahle} by a logarithmic factor using our spectral gap bounds and we also improve the lower bound via finer probabilistic estimates than those in Kahle (2007) \cite{kahle}.

Art gallery problem with rook and queen vision
Published • View Publication • BIB
How many chess rooks or queens does it take to guard all the squares of a given polyomino, the union of square tiles from a square grid? This question is a version of the art gallery problem in which the guards can "see" whichever squares the rook or queen attacks. We show that floor(n/2) rooks or floor(n/3) queens are sufficient and sometimes necessary to guard a polyomino with n tiles. We also prove that finding the minimum number of rooks or the minimum number of queens needed to guard a polyomino is NP-hard. These results also apply to d-dimensional rooks and queens on d-dimensional polycubes. We also use bipartite matching theorems to describe sets of non-attacking rooks on polyominoes.

The probability of positivity in symmetric and quasisymmetric functions
Published in J. Comb. 11:475--493 (2020) • View Publication • BIB
Given an element in a finite-dimensional real vector space, $V$, that is a nonnegative linear combination of basis vectors for some basis $B$, we compute the probability that it is furthermore a nonnegative linear combination of basis vectors for a second basis, $A$. We then apply this general result to combinatorially compute the probability that a symmetric function is Schur-positive (recovering the recent result of Bergeron--Patrias--Reiner), $e$-positive or $h$-positive. Similarly we compute the probability that a quasisymmetric function is quasisymmetric Schur-positive or fundamental-positive. In every case we conclude that the probability tends to zero as the degree of a function tends to infinity.
Automatic sequences based on Parry or Bertrand numeration systems
Published • View Publication • BIB
We study the factor complexity and closure properties of automatic sequences based on Parry or Bertrand numeration systems. These automatic sequences can be viewed as generalizations of the more typical $k$-automatic sequences and Pisot-automatic sequences. We show that, like $k$-automatic sequences, Parry-automatic sequences have sublinear factor complexity while there exist Bertrand-automatic sequences with superlinear factor complexity. We prove that the set of Parry-automatic sequences with respect to a fixed Parry numeration system is not closed under taking images by uniform substitutions or periodic deletion of letters. These closure properties hold for $k$-automatic sequences and Pisot-automatic sequences, so our result shows that these properties are lost when generalizing to Parry numeration systems and beyond. Moreover, we show that a multidimensional sequence is $U$-automatic with respect to a positional numeration system $U$ with regular language of numeration if and only if its $U$-kernel is finite.
Hyper $b$-ary expansions and Stern polynomials
We study a recently introduced base $b$ polynomial analog of Stern's diatomic sequence, which generalizes Stern polynomials of Klavar, Dilcher, Ericksen, Mansour, Stolarsky, and others. We lift some basic properties of base $2$ Stern polynomials to arbitrary base, and introduce a matrix characterization of Stern polynomials. By specializing, we recover some new number theoretic results about hyper $b$-ary partitions, which count partitions of $n$ into powers of $b$.

A note on the size Ramsey number of powers of paths
Let $r\geq3$ be an integer such that $r-2$ is a prime power and let $H$ be a connected graph on $n$ vertices with average degree at least $d$ and $α(H)\leqβn$, where $0<β<1$ is a constant. We prove that the size Ramsey number \[ \hat{R}({H};r) > \frac{nd}{2}{(r - 2)^2} - C\sqrt n \] for all sufficiently large $n$, where $C$ is a constant depending only on $r$ and $d$. In particular, for integers $k\ge1$, and $r\ge3$ such that $r-2$ is a prime power, we have that there exists a constant $C$ depending only on $r$ and $d$ such that $\hat{R}(P_{n}^{k}; r)> kn{(r - 2)^2}-C\sqrt n -\frac{{({k^2} + k)}}{2}{(r - 2)^2}$ for all sufficiently large $n$, where $P_{n}^{k}$ is the $kth$ power of $P_n$. We also prove that $\hat{R}(P_n,P_n,P_n)<764.1n$ for sufficiently large $n$. This result improves some results of Dudek and Prałat (\emph{SIAM J. Discrete Math.}, 31 (2017), 2079--2092 and \emph{Electron. J. Combin.}, 25 (2018), no.3, # P3.35).
Exact distance graphs of product graphs
Given a graph $G$, the exact distance-$p$ graph $G^{[\natural p]}$ has $V(G)$ as its vertex set, and two vertices are adjacent whenever the distance between them in $G$ equals $p$. We present formulas describing the structure of exact distance-$p$ graphs of the Cartesian, the strong, and the lexicographic product. We prove such formulas for the exact distance-$2$ graphs of direct products of graphs. We also consider infinite grids and some other product structures. We characterize the products of graphs of which exact distance graphs are connected. The exact distance-$p$ graphs of hypercubes $Q_n$ are also studied. As these graphs contain generalized Johnson graphs as induced subgraphs, we use some known and find some new constructions of their colorings. These constructions are applied for colorings of the exact distance-$p$ graphs of hypercubes with the focus on the chromatic number of $Q_{n}^{[\natural p]}$ for $p\in \{n-2,n-3,n-4\}$.

Incompatible double posets and double order polytopes
Published in Electronic Journal of Combinatorics 27(1) P1.9 (2020), 13 pages • View Publication • BIB
In 1986 Stanley associated to a poset the order polytope. The close interplay between its combinatorial and geometric properties makes the order polytope an object of tremendous interest. Double posets were introduced in 2011 by Malvenuto and Reutenauer as a generalization of Stanleys labelled posets. A double poset is a finite set equipped with two partial orders. To a double poset Chappell, Friedl and Sanyal (2017) associated the double order polytope. They determined the combinatorial structure for the class of compatible double posets. In this paper we generalize their description to all double posets and we classify the 2-level double order polytopes.

Computational complexity, Newton polytopes, and Schubert polynomials
Published in Proceedings of the 31st Conference on Formal Power Series and Algebraic Combinatorics (Ljubljana), Sem. Lothar. Combin. 82B (2020), Art. 52, 12 pp • Search Publication
The nonvanishing problem asks if a coefficient of a polynomial is nonzero. Many families of polynomials in algebraic combinatorics admit combinatorial counting rules and simultaneously enjoy having saturated Newton polytopes (SNP). Thereby, in amenable cases, nonvanishing is in the complexity class $NP\cap coNP$ of problems with "good characterizations". This suggests a new algebraic combinatorics viewpoint on complexity theory. This report discusses the case of Schubert polynomials. These form a basis of all polynomials and appear in the study of cohomology rings of flag manifolds. We give a tableau criterion for nonvanishing, from which we deduce the first polynomial time algorithm. These results are obtained from new characterizations of the Schubitope, a generalization of the permutahedron defined for any subset of the n x n grid, together with a theorem of A. Fink, K. Mészáros, and A. St. Dizier, which proved a conjecture of C. Monical, N. Tokcan, and the third author.

Enumeration of $S$-omino towers and row-convex $k$-omino towers
We first enumerate a generalization of domino towers that was proposed by Tricia M. Brown (J. Integer Seq. 20 (2017)), which we call S-omino towers. We establish equations that the generating function must satisfy and then apply the Lagrange inversion formula to find a closed formula for the number of towers. We also show a connection to generalized Dyck paths and provide an explicit bijection. Finally, we consider the set of row-convex k-omino towers, introduced by Brown, and calculate an exact generating function.
A localization method in Hamiltonian graph theory
Published in Journal of Combinatorial Theory, Series B 148 (2021), 209-238 • View Publication • BIB
The classical global criteria for the existence of Hamilton cycles only apply to graphs with large edge density and small diameter. In a series of papers Asratian and Khachatryan developed local criteria for the existence of Hamilton cycles in finite connected graphs, which are analogues of the classical global criteria due to Dirac (1952), Ore (1960), Jung (1978), and Nash-Williams (1971). The idea was to show that the global concept of Hamiltonicity can, under rather general conditions, be captured by local phenomena, using the structure of balls of small radii. (The ball of radius $r$ centered at a vertex $u$ is a subgraph of $G$ induced by the set of vertices whose distances from $u$ do not exceed $r$.) Such results are called localization theorems and present a possibility to extend known classes of finite Hamiltonian graphs. In this paper we formulate a general approach for finding localization theorems and use this approach to formulate local analogues of well-known results of Bauer et al. (1989), Bondy (1980), Häggkvist and Nicoghossian (1981), and Moon and Moser (1963). Finally we extend two of our results to infinite locally finite graphs and show that they guarantee the existence of Hamiltonian curves, introduced by Kündgen, Li and Thomassen (2017).
