Magic rectangles with empty cells
A magic rectangle of order $m\times n$ with precisely $r$ filled cells in each row and precisely $s$ filled cells in each column, denoted $MR(m,n;r,s)$, is an arrangement of the numbers from 0 to $mr-1$ in an $m\times n$ array such that each number occurs exactly once in the rectangle and the sum of the entries of each row is the same and the sum of entries of each column is also the same. In this paper we study the existence of $MR(m,n;r,2)$, $MR(m,km;ks,s)$, and $MR(am,bm;bs,as)$. We also prove that there exists a magic square set $MSS(m, s; t)$ if and only if $m=s=t=1$ or $3\leq s\leq m$ and either $s$ is even or $mt$ is odd.

Unit Ball Graphs on Geodesic Spaces
Published • View Publication • BIB
Consider finitely many points in a geodesic space. If the distance of two points is less than a fixed threshold, then we regard these two points as "near". Connecting near points with edges, we obtain a simple graph on the points, which is called a unit ball graph. If the space is the real line, then it is known as a unit interval graph. Unit ball graphs on a geodesic space describe geometric characteristics of the space in terms of graphs. In this article, we show that every unit ball graph on a geodesic space is (strongly) chordal if and only if the space is an $ \mathbb{R} $-tree and that every unit ball graph on a geodesic space is (claw, net)-free if and only if the space is a connected manifold of dimension at most $ 1 $. As a corollary, we prove that the collection of unit ball graphs essentially characterizes the real line and the unit circle.
Rainbow Ramsey problems for the Boolean lattice
Published • View Publication • BIB
We address the following rainbow Ramsey problem: For posets $P,Q$ what is the smallest number $n$ such that any coloring of the elements of the Boolean lattice $B_n$ either admits a monochromatic copy of $P$ or a rainbow copy of $Q$. We consider both weak and strong (non-induced and induced) versions of this problem. We also investigate related problems on (partial) $k$-colorings of $B_n$ that do not admit rainbow antichains of size $k$.

Bounds on the nonnegative signed domination number of graphs
The aim of this work is to investigate the nonnegative signed domination number $γ^{NN}_s$ with emphasis on regular, ($r+1$)-clique-free graphs and trees. We give lower and upper bounds on $γ^{NN}_s$ for regular graphs and prove that $n/3$ is the best possible upper bound on this parameter for a cubic graph of order $n$, specifically. As an application of the classic theorem of Turán we bound $γ^{NN}_s(G)$ from below, for an ($r+1$)-clique-free graph $G$ and characterize all such graphs for which the equality holds, which corrects and generalizes a result for bipartite graphs in [Electron. J. Graph Theory Appl. 4 (2) (2016), 231--237], simultaneously. Also, we bound $γ^{NN}_s(T)$ for a tree $T$ from above and below and characterize all trees attaining the bounds.

Classification theorem for strong triangle blocking arrangements
Published • View Publication • BIB
A strong triangle blocking arrangement is a geometric arrangement of some line segments in a triangle with certain intersection properties. It turns out that they are closely related to blocking sets. Our aim in this paper is to prove a classification theorem for strong triangle blocking arrangements. As an application, we obtain a new proof of the result of Ackerman, Buchin, Knauer, Pinchasi and Rote which says that $n$ points in general position cannot be blocked by $n-1$ points, unless $n = 2,4$. We also conjecture an extremal variant of the blocking points problem.

Linked partition ideals and Kanade--Russell conjectures
Published in Discrete Math. 343 (2020), no. 7, 111876 • View Publication • BIB
This paper will primarily present a method of proving generating function identities for partitions from linked partition ideals. The method we introduce is built on a conjecture by George Andrews and that those generating functions satisfy some $q$-difference equations. We will come up with the generating functions of partitions in the Kanade--Russell conjectures to illustrate the effectiveness of this method.

Boxes, extended boxes, and sets of positive upper density in the Euclidean space
Published in Math. Proc. Cambridge Philos. Soc. 171 (2021), no. 3, 481-501 • View Publication • BIB
We prove that sets with positive upper Banach density in sufficiently large dimensions contain congruent copies of all sufficiently large dilates of three specific higher-dimensional patterns. These patterns are: $2^n$ vertices of a fixed $n$-dimensional rectangular box, the same vertices extended with $n$ points completing three-term arithmetic progressions, and the same vertices extended with $n$ points completing three-point corners. Our results provide common generalizations of several Euclidean density theorems from the literature.

Extension theorems and a connection to the Erdős-Falconer distance problem over finite fields
Published • View Publication • BIB
The first purpose of this paper is to provide new finite field extension theorems for paraboloids and spheres. By using the unusual good Fourier transform of the zero sphere in some specific dimensions, which has been discovered recently in the work of Iosevich, Lee, Shen, and the first and second listed authors (2018), we provide a new $L^2\to L^r$ extension estimate for paraboloids in dimensions $d=4k+3$ and $q\equiv 3\mod 4$, which improves significantly the recent exponent obtained by the first listed author. In the case of spheres, we introduce a way of using \textit{the first association scheme graph} to analyze energy sets, and as a consequence, we obtain new $L^p\to L^4$ extension theorems for spheres of primitive radii in odd dimensions, which break the Stein-Tomas result toward $L^p\to L^4$ which has stood for more than ten years. Most significantly, it follows from the results for spheres that there exists a different extension phenomenon between spheres and paraboloids in odd dimensions, namely, the $L^p\to L^4$ estimates for spheres with primitive radii are much stronger than those for paraboloids. Based on new estimates, we will also clarify conjectures on finite field extension problem for spheres. This results in a reasonably complete description of finite field extension theorems for spheres. The second purpose is to show that there is a connection between the restriction conjecture associated to paraboloids and the Erdős-Falconer distance conjecture over finite fields. The last is to prove that the Erdős-Falconer distance conjecture holds in odd-dimensional spaces when we study distances between two sets: one set lies on a variety (paraboloids or spheres), and the other set is arbitrary in $\mathbb{F}_q^d$.

Regularity and multiplicity of toric rings of three-dimensional Ferrers diagrams
Published • View Publication • BIB
We investigate the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity and the multiplicity of the toric ring associated with a three-dimensional Ferrers diagram. In particular, in the rectangular case, we provide direct formulas for these two important invariants. Then, we compare these invariants for an accompanying pair of Ferrers diagrams under some mild conditions and bound the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity for more general cases.

Primitive and geometric-progression-free sets without large gaps
Published • View Publication • BIB
We prove the existence of primitive sets (sets of integers in which no element divides another) in which the gap between any two consecutive terms is substantially smaller than the best known upper bound for the gaps in the sequence of prime numbers. The proof uses the probabilistic method. Using the same techniques we improve the bounds obtained by He for gaps in geometric-progression-free sets.
Toric degenerations of cluster varieties and cluster duality
Published in Compositio Math. 156 (2020) 2149-2206 • View Publication • BIB
We introduce the notion of a $Y$-pattern with coefficients and its geometric counterpart: a cluster $\mathcal{X}$-variety with coefficients. We use these constructions to build a flat degeneration of every skew-symmetrizable specially completed cluster $\mathcal{X}$-variety $\widehat{\mathcal{X}}$ to the toric variety associated to its $\mathbf{g}$-fan. Moreover, we show that the fibers of this family are stratified in a natural way, with strata the specially completed $\mathcal{X}$-varieties encoded by $\mathrm{Star}(τ)$ for each cone $τ$ of the $\mathbf{g}$-fan. These strata degenerate to the associated toric strata of the central fiber. We further show that the family is cluster dual to $\mathcal{A}_{\mathrm{prin}}$ of Gross-Hacking-Keel-Kontsevich, and the fibers cluster dual to $\mathcal{A}_t$. Finally, we give two applications. First, we use our construction to identify the Rietsch-Williams toric degeneration of Grassmannians with the Gross-Hacking-Keel-Kontsevich degeneration in the case of $\mathrm{Gr}_2(\mathbb{C}^5)$. Next, we use it to link cluster duality to Batyrev-Borisov duality of Gorenstein toric Fanos in the context of mirror symmetry.

Combinatorial Designs for Deep Learning
Published in Journal of Combinaotrial Designs, 2020 • View Publication • BIB
Deep learning is a machine learning methodology using multi-layer neural network. A multi-layer neural network can be regarded as a chain of complete bipartite graphs. The nodes of the first partita is the input layer and the last is the output layer. The edges of a bipartite graph function as weights which are represented as a matrix. The values of i-th partita are computed by multiplication of the weight matrix and values of (i-1)-th partita. Using mass training and teacher data, the weight parameters are estimated little by little. Overfitting (or Overlearning) refers to a model that models the `training data` too well. It then becomes difficult for the model to generalize to new data which were not in the training set. The most popular method to avoid overfitting is called dropout. Dropout deletes a random sample of activations (nodes) to zero during the training process. A random sample of nodes causes more irregular frequency of dropout edges. There is a similar sampling concept in the area of design of experiments. We propose a combinatorial design on dropout nodes from each partita which balances the frequency of edges. We analyze and construct such designs in this paper.

The Maximum Length of Circuit Codes With Long Bit Runs and a New Characterization Theorem
Published • View Publication • BIB
We study circuit codes with long bit runs (sequences of distinct transitions) and derive a formula for the maximum length for an infinite class of symmetric circuit codes with long bit runs. This formula also results in an improved lower bound on the maximum length for an infinite class of circuit codes without restrictions on symmetry or bit run length. We also present a new characterization of circuit codes of spread $k$ based on a theorem of Deimer.

Sharp transition of the invertibility of the adjacency matrices of sparse random graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
We consider three different models of sparse random graphs:~undirected and directed Erdős-Rényi graphs, and random bipartite graph with an equal number of left and right vertices. For such graphs we show that if the edge connectivity probability $p \in (0,1)$ satisfies $n p \ge \log n + k(n)$ with $k(n) \to \infty$ as $n \to \infty$, then the adjacency matrix is invertible with probability approaching one (here $n$ is the number of vertices in the two former cases and the number of left and right vertices in the latter case). If $np \le \log n -k(n)$ then these matrices are invertible with probability approaching zero, as $n \to \infty$. In the intermediate region, when $np=\log n + k(n)$, for a bounded sequence $k(n) \in \mathbb{R}$, the event $Ω_0$ that the adjacency matrix has a zero row or a column and its complement both have non-vanishing probability. For such choices of $p$ our results show that conditioned on the event $Ω_0^c$ the matrices are again invertible with probability tending to one. This shows that the primary reason for the non-invertibility of such matrices is the existence of a zero row or a column. The bounds on the probability of the invertibility of these matrices are a consequence of quantitative lower bounds on their smallest singular values. Combining this with an upper bound on the largest singular value of the centered version of these matrices we show that the (modified) condition number is $O(n^{1+o(1)})$ on the event that there is no zero row or column, with large probability. This matches with von Neumann's prediction about the condition number of random matrices up to a factor of $n^{o(1)}$, for the entire range of $p$.

Some notes on the signed bad number in bipartite graphs
Published in Discrete Mathematics, Algorithms and Applications, 2020 • View Publication • BIB
In this paper, we deal with the signed bad number and the negative decision number of graphs. We show that two upper bounds concerning these two parameters for bipartite graphs in papers [Discrete Math. Algorithms Appl. 1 (2011), 33--41] and [Australas. J. Combin. 41 (2008), 263--272] are not true as they stand. We correct them by presenting more general bounds for triangle-free graphs by using the classic theorem of Mantel from the extremal graph theory and characterize all triangle-free graphs attaining these bounds.

Levelness of toric rings arising from order and chain polytopes
Let $K[\mathcal{O}(P)]$ denote the toric ring of the order polytope $\mathcal{O}(P)$ of a finite partially ordered set $P$ and $K[\mathcal{C}(P)]$ that of the chain polytope $\mathcal{C}(P)$. It will be shown that $β_{p, p+j}(K[\mathcal{O}(P)]) = β_{p, p+j}(K[\mathcal{C}(P)])$ for all $j \geq 0$, where $p$ is the projective dimension of $K[\mathcal{O}(P)]$ (and that of $K[\mathcal{C}(P)]$). In particular, $K[\mathcal{O}(P)]$ is level if and only if $K[\mathcal{C}(P)]$ is level.

On Intersection Graphs of Graphs and Hypergraphs: A Survey
In this survey, we have attempted to show some developmental milestones on the characterizations of intersection graphs of hypergraphs. The theory of intersection graphs of hypergraphs has been a classical topic in the theory of special graphs. To conclude, at the end, we have listed some open problems posed by various authors whose work has contributed to this survey and also the new trends coming out of intersection graphs. Keywords: Hypergraphs, Intersection graphs, Line graphs, Representative graphs, Derived graphs, Algorithms (ALG), Forbidden induced subgraphs (FIS), Krausz partitions, Eigenvalues.

Symplectic Matroids, Circuits, and Signed Graphs
One generalization of ordinary matroids is symplectic matroids. While symplectic matroids were initially defined by their collections of bases, there has been no cryptomorphic definition of symplectic matroids in terms of circuits. We give a definition of symplectic matroids by collections of circuits. As an application, we construct a class of examples of symplectic matroids from graphs in terms of circuits.
