Locally Searching for Large Induced Matchings
It is an easy observation that a natural greedy approach yields a $\left(d-O(1)\right)$-factor approximation algorithm for the maximum induced matching problem in $d$-regular graphs. The only considerable and non-trivial improvement of this approximation ratio was obtained by Gotthilf and Lewenstein using a combination of the greedy approach and local search, where understanding the performance of the local search was the challenging part of the analysis. We study the performance of their local search when applied to general graphs, $C_4$-free graphs, $\{C_3,C_4\}$-free graphs, $C_5$-free graphs, and claw-free graphs. As immediate consequences, we obtain approximation algorithms for the maximum induced matching problem restricted to the $d$-regular graphs in these classes.

On almost-equidistant sets - II
Published • View Publication • BIB
A set in $\mathbb R^d$ is called almost-equidistant if for any three distinct points in the set, some two are at unit distance apart. First, we give a short proof of the result of Bezdek and Lángi claiming that an almost-equidistant set lying on a $(d-1)$-dimensional sphere of radius $r$, where $r<1/\sqrt{2}$, has at most $2d+2$ points. Second, we prove that an almost-equidistant set $V$ in $\mathbb R^d$ has $O(d)$ points in two cases: if the diameter of $V$ is at most $1$ or if $V$ is a subset of a $d$-dimensional ball of radius at most $1/\sqrt{2}+cd^{-2/3}$, where $c<1/2$. Also, we present a new proof of the result of Kupavskii, Mustafa and Swanepoel arXiv:1708.01590 that an almost-equidistant set in $\mathbb R^d$ has $O(d^{4/3})$ elements.

A Crossing Lemma for Jordan Curves
Published • View Publication • BIB
If two Jordan curves in the plane have precisely one point in common, and there they do not properly cross, then the common point is called a {\em touching point}. The main result of this paper is a Crossing Lemma for simple curves: Let $X$ and $T$ stand for the sets of intersection points and touching points, respectively, in a family of $n$ simple curves in the plane, no three of which pass through the same point. If $|T|>cn$, for some fixed constant $c>0$, then we prove that $|X|=Ω(|T|(\log\log(|T|/n))^{1/504})$. In particular, if $|T|/n\rightarrow\infty$, then the number of intersection points is much larger than the number of touching points. As a corollary, we confirm the following long-standing conjecture of Richter and Thomassen: The total number of intersection points between $n$ pairwise intersecting simple closed (i.e., Jordan) curves in the plane, no three of which pass through the same point, is at least $(1-o(1))n^2$.

Face distributions of embeddings of complete graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
A longstanding open question of Archdeacon and Craft asks whether every complete graph has a minimum genus embedding with at most one nontriangular face. We exhibit such an embedding for each complete graph except $K_8$, the complete graph on 8 vertices, and we go on to prove that no such embedding can exist for this graph. Our approach also solves a more general problem, giving a complete characterization of the possible face distributions (i.e. the numbers of faces of each length) realizable by minimum genus embeddings of each complete graph. We also tackle analogous questions for nonorientable and maximum genus embeddings.

The Core Label Order of a Congruence-Uniform Lattice
Published in Algebra Universalis 80:10 (2019) • View Publication • BIB
We investigate the alternate order on a congruence-uniform lattice $\mathcal{L}$ as introduced by N. Reading, which we dub the core label order of $\mathcal{L}$. When $\mathcal{L}$ can be realized as a poset of regions of a simplicial hyperplane arrangement, the core label order is always a lattice. For general $\mathcal{L}$, however, this fails. We provide an equivalent characterization for the core label order to be a lattice. As a consequence we show that the property of the core label order being a lattice is inherited to lattice quotients. We use the core label order to characterize the congruence-uniform lattices that are Boolean lattices, and we investigate the connection between congruence-uniform lattices whose core label orders are lattices and congruence-uniform lattices of biclosed sets.

A note on the intersection property for flat boxes and boxicity in $\mathbb{R}^d$
By extending the definition of boxicity, we extend a Helly-type result given by Danzer and Grumbaum on 2-piercings of family of boxes in $d$-dimensional Euclidian space by lowering the dimension of the boxes in the ambient space.

Isolating a Vertex via Lattices: Polytopes with Totally Unimodular Faces
Published • View Publication • BIB
We present a geometric approach towards derandomizing the Isolation Lemma by Mulmuley, Vazirani, and Vazirani. In particular, our approach produces a quasi-polynomial family of weights, where each weight is an integer and quasi-polynomially bounded, that can isolate a vertex in any 0/1 polytope for which each face lies in an affine space defined by a totally unimodular matrix. This includes the polytopes given by totally unimodular constraints and generalizes the recent derandomization of the Isolation Lemma for bipartite perfect matching and matroid intersection. We prove our result by associating a lattice to each face of the polytope and showing that if there is a totally unimodular kernel matrix for this lattice, then the number of vectors of length within 3/2 of the shortest vector in it is polynomially bounded. The proof of this latter geometric fact is combinatorial and follows from a polynomial bound on the number of circuits of size within 3/2 of the shortest circuit in a regular matroid. This is the technical core of the paper and relies on a variant of Seymour's decomposition theorem for regular matroids. It generalizes an influential result by Karger on the number of minimum cuts in a graph to regular matroids.

On the clique number of the square of a line graph and its relation to Ore-degree
Published • View Publication • BIB
In 1985, Erdős and Nešetřil conjectured that the square of the line graph of a graph $G$, that is $L(G)^2$, can be colored with $\frac{5}{4}Δ(G)^2$ colors. This conjecture implies the weaker conjecture that the clique number of such a graph, that is $ω(L(G)^2)$, is at most $\frac{5}{4}Δ(G)^2$. In 2015, Śleszyńska-Nowak proved that $ω(L(G)^2)\le \frac{3}{2}Δ(G)^2$. In this paper, we prove that $ω(L(G)^2)\le \frac{4}{3}Δ(G)^2$. This theorem follows from our stronger result that $ω(L(G)^2)\le \frac{σ(G)^2}{3}$ where $σ(G) := \max_{uv\in E(G)} d(u) + d(v)$, is the Ore-degree of the graph $G$.

Analyzing Boltzmann Samplers for Bose-Einstein Condensates with Dirichlet Generating Functions
Published in Proceedings of the 15th Workshop on Analytic Algorithmics and Combinatorics (ANALCO 2018) 107-117 • View Publication • BIB
Boltzmann sampling is commonly used to uniformly sample objects of a particular size from large combinatorial sets. For this technique to be effective, one needs to prove that (1) the sampling procedure is efficient and (2) objects of the desired size are generated with sufficiently high probability. We use this approach to give a provably efficient sampling algorithm for a class of weighted integer partitions related to Bose-Einstein condensation from statistical physics. Our sampling algorithm is a probabilistic interpretation of the ordinary generating function for these objects, derived from the symbolic method of analytic combinatorics. Using the Khintchine-Meinardus probabilistic method to bound the rejection rate of our Boltzmann sampler through singularity analysis of Dirichlet generating functions, we offer an alternative approach to analyze Boltzmann samplers for objects with multiplicative structure.

The generalized distance spectrum of a graph and applications
Published • View Publication • BIB
The generalized distance matrix of a graph is the matrix whose entries depend only on the pairwise distances between vertices, and the generalized distance spectrum is the set of eigenvalues of this matrix. This framework generalizes many of the commonly studied spectra of graphs. We show that for a large class of graphs these eigenvalues can be computed explicitly. We also present the applications of our results to competition models in ecology and rapidly mixing Markov Chains.

Forbidden subgraphs for graphs of bounded spectral radius, with applications to equiangular lines
Published in Israel Journal of Mathematics, volume 236, pages 393-421, March 2020 • View Publication • BIB
The spectral radius of a graph is the largest eigenvalue of its adjacency matrix. Let $\mathcal{F}(λ)$ be the family of connected graphs of spectral radius $\le λ$. We show that $\mathcal{F}(λ)$ can be defined by a finite set of forbidden subgraphs if and only if $λ< λ^* := \sqrt{2+\sqrt{5}} \approx 2.058$ and $λ\not\in \{α_2, α_3, \dots\}$, where $α_m = β_m^{1/2} + β_m^{-1/2}$ and $β_m$ is the largest root of $x^{m+1}=1+x+\dots+x^{m-1}$. The study of forbidden subgraphs characterization for $\mathcal{F}(λ)$ is motivated by the problem of estimating the maximum cardinality of equiangular lines in the $n$-dimensional Euclidean space $\mathbb{R}^n$ --- a family of lines through the origin such that the angle between any pair of them is the same. Denote by $N_α(n)$ the maximum number of equiangular lines in $\mathbb{R}^n$ with angle $\arccosα$. We establish the asymptotic formula $N_α(n) = c_αn + O_α(1)$ for every $α\ge \frac{1}{1+2λ^*}$. In particular, $N_{1/3}(n) = 2n+O(1)$ and $N_{1/5}(n), N_{1/(1+2\sqrt{2})}(n) = \frac{3}{2}n+O(1)$. Besides we show that $N_α(n) \le 1.49n + O_α(1)$ for every $α\neq \tfrac{1}{3}, \tfrac{1}{5}, \tfrac{1}{1+2\sqrt{2}}$, which improves a recent result of Balla, Dräxler, Keevash and Sudakov.

Characters of Independent Stanley Sequences
Published • View Publication • BIB
Odlyzko and Stanley introduced a greedy algorithm for constructing infinite sequences with no 3-term arithmetic progressions when beginning with a finite set with no 3-term arithmetic progressions. The sequences constructed from this procedure are known as Stanley sequences and appear to have two distinct growth rates which dictate whether the sequences are structured or chaotic. A large subclass of sequences of the former type is independent sequences, which have a self-similar structure. An attribute of interest for independent sequences is the character. In this paper, building on recent progress, we prove that every nonnegative integer $λ\not\in\{1,3,5,9,11,15\}$ is attainable as the character of an independent Stanley sequence, thus resolving a conjecture of Rolnick.

Maximal spanning time for neighborhood growth on the Hamming plane
Published • View Publication • BIB
We consider a long-range growth dynamics on the two-dimensional integer lattice, initialized by a finite set of occupied points. Subsequently, a site $x$ becomes occupied if the pair consisting of the counts of occupied sites along the entire horizontal and vertical lines through $x$ lies outside a fixed Young diagram $\mathcal{Z}$. We study the extremal quantity $μ(\mathcal{Z})$, the maximal finite time at which the lattice is fully occupied. We give an upper bound on $μ(\mathcal{Z})$ that is linear in the area of the bounding rectangle of $\mathcal{Z}$, and a lower bound $\sqrt{s-1}$, where $s$ is the side length of the largest square contained in $\mathcal{Z}$. We give more precise results for a restricted family of initial sets, and for a simplified version of the dynamics.

Improved Bounds for the Graham-Pollak Problem for Hypergraphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
For a fixed $r$, let $f_r(n)$ denote the minimum number of complete $r$-partite $r$-graphs needed to partition the complete $r$-graph on $n$ vertices. The Graham-Pollak theorem asserts that $f_2(n)=n-1$. An easy construction shows that $f_r(n) \leq (1+o(1))\binom{n}{\lfloor r/2 \rfloor}$, and we write $c_r$ for the least number such that $f_r(n) \leq c_r (1+o(1))\binom{n}{\lfloor r/2 \rfloor}$. It was known that $c_r < 1$ for each even $r \geq 4$, but this was not known for any odd value of $r$. In this short note, we prove that $c_{295}<1$. Our method also shows that $c_r \rightarrow 0$, answering another open problem.

A combinatorial interpretation of harmonic cycles
In this paper, we will investigate a harmonic cycle (discrete harmonic form). With a CW-complex, we can construct the combinatorial Laplacian operator. The kernel of the operator is the harmonic space, the set of harmonic cycles, and is isomorphic to its homology due to combinatorial Hodge theory. We will introduce four concepts; cycletree, unicyclization, winding number map, and standard harmonic cycle. A cycletree is the disjoint union of a spanning tree and an edge on a given graph. A unicyclization consists of a graph and information substituting for faces. Then, we will define the winding number map and the standard harmonic cycle, and prove related properties. Finally, we will show a relation between the winding number and the inner product with the standard harmonic cycle. Then, we will see the standard harmonic cycle is actually a harmonic cycle. In other words, we give a combinatorial interpretation on a harmonic cycle.
On the Mean Connected Induced Subgraph Order of Cographs
In this article the extremal structures for the mean order of connected induced subgraphs of cographs are determined. It is shown that among all connected cographs of order $n \ge 7$, the star $K_{1,n-1}$ has maximum mean connected induced subgraph order, and for $n \ge 3$, the $n$-skillet, $K_1+(K_1 \cup K_{n-2})$, has minimum mean connected induced subgraph order. It is deduced that the density for connected cographs (i.e. the ratio of the mean to the order of the graph) is asymptotically $1/2$. The mean order of all connected induced subgraphs containing a given vertex $v$ of a cograph $G$, called the local mean of $G$ at $v$, is shown to be at least as large as the mean order of all connected induced subgraphs of $G$, called the global mean of $G$.
The complexity of computing the cylindrical and the $t$-circle crossing number of a graph
Published in Electron. J. Combin. 25 (2018), no. 2, Paper 2.43, 11 pp • View Publication • BIB
A plane drawing of a graph is {\em cylindrical} if there exist two concentric circles that contain all the vertices of the graph, and no edge intersects (other than at its endpoints) any of these circles. The {\em cylindrical crossing number} of a graph \(G\) is the minimum number of crossings in a cylindrical drawing of \(G\). In his influential survey on the variants of the definition of the crossing number of a graph, Schaefer lists the complexity of computing the cylindrical crossing number of a graph as an open question. In this paper we settle this by showing that this problem is NP-complete. Moreover, we show an analogous result for the natural generalization of the cylindrical crossing number, namely the \(t\)-{\em circle crossing number}.
New concept of connection in signed graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
In a signed graph each edge has a sign, $+1$ or $-1$. We introduce in the present paper a new definition of connection in a signed graph by the existence of both positive and negative chains between vertices. We prove some results and properties of this definition, such as sign components, sign articulation vertices, and sign isthmi, and we compare them to corresponding graph and signed-graphic matroid properties. We apply our results to signed graphs without positive cycles. For signed graphs in which every edge is negative our properties become parity properties.
