Asymptotics of the modes of the ordered Stirling numbers
It is known that the $S(n,k)$ Stirling numbers as well as the ordered Stirling numbers $k!S(n,k)$ form log-concave sequences. Although in the first case there are many estimations about the mode, for the ordered Stirling numbers such estimations are not known. In this short note we study this problem and some of its generalizations.
Obstructions for three-coloring graphs without induced paths on six vertices
Published • View Publication • BIB
We prove that there are 24 4-critical $P_6$-free graphs, and give the complete list. We remark that, if $H$ is connected and not a subgraph of $P_6$, there are infinitely many 4-critical $H$-free graphs. Our result answers questions of Golovach et al. and Seymour.

Further Results on the Classification of MDS Codes
Published • View Publication • BIB
A $q$-ary maximum distance separable (MDS) code $C$ with length $n$, dimension $k$ over an alphabet $\mathcal{A}$ of size $q$ is a set of $q^k$ codewords that are elements of $\mathcal{A}^n$, such that the Hamming distance between two distinct codewords in $C$ is at least $n-k+1$. Sets of mutually orthogonal Latin squares of orders $q\leq 9$, corresponding to two-dimensional \mbox{$q$-}ary MDS codes, and $q$-ary one-error-correcting MDS codes for $q\leq 8$ have been classified in earlier studies. These results are used here to complete the classification of all $7$-ary and $8$-ary MDS codes with $d\geq 3$ using a computer search.

On the number of unit-area triangles spanned by convex grids in the plane
Published • View Publication • BIB
A finite set of real numbers is called convex if the differences between consecutive elements form a strictly increasing sequence. We show that, for any pair of convex sets $A, B\subset\mathbb R$, each of size $n^{1/2}$, the convex grid $A\times B$ spans at most $O(n^{37/17}\log^{2/17}n)$ unit-area triangles. This improves the best known upper bound $O(n^{31/14})$ recently obtained in \cite{RS}. Our analysis also applies to more general families of sets $A$, $B$, known as sets of Szemerédi--Trotter type.

On wild frieze patterns
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this note, among other things, we show: There are periodic wild SLk-frieze patterns whose entries are positive integers. There are non-periodic SLk-frieze patterns whose entries are positive integers. There is an SL3-frieze pattern whose entries are positive integers and with infinitely many different entries.

Dimensions of affine Deligne-Lusztig varieties: a new approach via labeled folded alcove walks and root operators
Published in Mem. Amer. Math. Soc. 261 (2019), no. 1260, v+101 pp • Search Publication
Let G be a reductive group over the field F=k((t)), where k is an algebraic closure of a finite field, and let W be the (extended) affine Weyl group of G. The associated affine Deligne-Lusztig varieties $X_x(b)$, which are indexed by elements b in G(F) and x in W, were introduced by Rapoport. Basic questions about the varieties $X_x(b)$ which have remained largely open include when they are nonempty, and if nonempty, their dimension. We use techniques inspired by geometric group theory and representation theory to address these questions in the case that b is a pure translation, and so prove much of a sharpened version of Conjecture 9.5.1 of Görtz, Haines, Kottwitz, and Reuman. Our approach is constructive and type-free, sheds new light on the reasons for existing results in the case that b is basic, and reveals new patterns. Since we work only in the standard apartment of the building for G(F), our results also hold in the p-adic context, where we formulate a definition of the dimension of a p-adic Deligne-Lusztig set. We present two immediate consequences of our main results, to class polynomials of affine Hecke algebras and to affine reflection length.

The proofs of two directed paths conjectures of Bollobás and Leader
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $A$ and $B$ be disjoint sets, of size $2^k$, of vertices of $Q_n$, the $n$-dimensional hypercube. In 1997, Bollobás and Leader proved that there must be $(n-k)2^k$ edge-disjoint paths between such $A$ and $B$. They conjectured that when $A$ is a down-set and $B$ is an up-set, these paths may be chosen to be directed (that is, the vertices in the path form a chain). We use a novel type of compression argument to prove stronger versions of these conjectures, namely that the largest number of edge-disjoint paths between a down-set $A$ and an up-set $B$ is the same as the largest number of directed edge-disjoint paths between $A$ and $B$. Bollobás and Leader made an analogous conjecture for vertex-disjoint paths and we prove a strengthening of this by similar methods. We also prove similar results for all other sizes of $A$ and $B$.

Realization spaces of matroids over hyperfields
We study realization spaces of matroids over hyperfields (in the sense of Baker and Bowler). More precisely, given a matroid M and a hyperfield H we determine the space of all H-matroids over M. This can be seen as the matroid stratum of the hyperfield Grassmannians in the sense of Anderson and Davis. We give different descriptions of these realization spaces (e.g., in terms of Tutte groups or projective classes), allowing for explicit computations. When the hyperfield at hand is topological, the realization spaces have a natural topology. In this case, our models carry the correct homeomorphism type. As applications of our methods we obtain a theorem on the existence of phased matroids that are not realizable over the complex field and are not chirotopal, as well as a result on the diffeomorphism type of complex hyperplane arrangements whose underlying matroid is uniform.

Bounded Height Interlaced Pairs of Parking Functions
Published • View Publication • BIB
We enumerate interlaced pairs of parking functions whose underlying Dyck path has a bounded height. We obtain an explicit formula for this enumeration in the form of a quotient of analogs of Chebicheff polynomials having coefficients in the ring of symmetric functions.
A Note on the Rainbow Connectivity of Tournaments
An arc-coloured digraph $D$ is said to be \emph{rainbow connected} if for every two vertices $u$ and $v$ there is an $uv$-path all whose arcs have different colours. The minimun number of colours required to make the digraph rainbow connected is called the \emph{rainbow connection number} of $D$, denoted $\stackrel{\rightarrow}{rc}(D)$. In \cite{Dorbec} it was showed that if $T$ is a strong tournament with $n\geq 5$ vertices, then $2\leq \stackrel{\rightarrow}{rc}(T)\leq n-1$; and that for every $n$ and $k$ such that $3\leq k\leq n-1$, there exists a tournament $T$ on $n$ vertices such that $\stackrel{\rightarrow}{rc}(T)=k$. In this note it is showed that for any $n\ge6$, there is a tournament $T$ of $n$ vertices such that $\stackrel{\rightarrow}{rc}(T)=2$.

Explicit formulas for computation of the Poincaré series for the algebras of joint $SL_2$-invariants and covariants of $n$ linear forms in terms of Narayana polynomials are found. Also, for these algebras we calculate the degrees and asymptotic behavious of the degrees.

On consecutive sums in permutations
Published • View Publication • BIB
We study the number of values taken by the sums $\sum_{i=u}^{v-1} a_i$, where $a_1,a_2,\dots,a_n$ is a permutation of $1,2,\dots,n$ and $1 \leq u < v \leq n+1$. In particular, we show that for a random choice of a permutation, with high probability there are $(\frac{1+e^{-2}}{4} +o(1)) n^2$ such sums. This answers an old question of Erdős and Harzheim. We also obtain non-trivial bounds on the maximum possible number of distinct sums, ranging over all permutations of $1,2,\dots,n$. We close with some questions concerning the minimal possible number of distinct sums.

Polynomial Invariants for Arbitrary Rank $D$ Weakly-Colored Stranded Graphs
Published in SIGMA 12 (2016), 030, 23 pages • View Publication • BIB
Polynomials on stranded graphs are higher dimensional generalization of Tutte and Bollobás-Riordan polynomials [Math. Ann. 323 (2002), 81-96]. Here, we deepen the analysis of the polynomial invariant defined on rank 3 weakly-colored stranded graphs introduced in arXiv:1301.1987. We successfully find in dimension $D\geq3$ a modified Euler characteristic with $D-2$ parameters. Using this modified invariant, we extend the rank 3 weakly-colored graph polynomial, and its main properties, on rank 4 and then on arbitrary rank $D$ weakly-colored stranded graphs.

Dunkl kernel associated with dihedral group
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper, we pursue the investigations started in \cite{Mas-You} where the authors provide a construction of the Dunkl intertwining operator for a large subset of the set of regular multiplicity values. More precisely, we make concrete the action of this operator on homogeneous polynomials when the root system is of dihedral type and under a mild assumption on the multiplicity function. In particular, we obtain a formula for the corresponding Dunkl kernel and another representation of the generalized Bessel function already derived in \cite{Demni0}. When the multiplicity function is everywhere constant, our computations give a solution to the problem of counting the number of decompositions of an element from a dihedral group into a fixed number of (non necessarily simple) reflections. In the remainder of the paper, we supply another method to derive the Dunkl kernel associated with dihedral systems from the corresponding generalized Bessel function. This time, we use the shift principle together with multiple combinations of Dunkl operators corresponding to the vectors of the canonical basis of $\mathbb{R}^2$. When the dihedral system is of order six and only in this case, a single combination suffices to get the Dunkl kernel and agrees up to an isomorphism with the formula recently obtained by Amri \cite[Lemma1]{Amri} in the case of a root system of type $A_2$. We finally derive an integral representation for the Dunkl kernel associated with the dihedral system of order eight.
Flows and stochastic Taylor series in Ito calculus
Published in J. Phys. A: Math. Theor. 48 495202 (2015) • View Publication • BIB
For stochastic systems driven by continuous semimartingales an explicit formula for the logarithm of the Ito flow map is given. A similar formula is also obtained for solutions of linear matrix-valued SDEs driven by arbitrary semimartingales. The computation relies on the lift to quasi-shuffle algebras of formulas involving products of Ito integrals of semimartingales. Whereas the Chen-Strichartz formula computing the logarithm of the Stratonovich flow map is classically expanded as a formal sum indexed by permutations, the analogous formula in Ito calculus is naturally indexed by surjections. This reflects the change of algebraic background involved in the transition between the two integration theories.

The second Feng-Rao number for codes coming from inductive semigroups
Published • View Publication • BIB
The second Feng-Rao number of every inductive numerical semigroup is explicitly computed. This number determines the asymptotical behaviour of the order bound for the second Hamming weight of one-point AG codes. In particular, this result is applied for the codes defined by asymptotically good towers of function fields whose Weierstrass semigroups are inductive. In addition, some properties of inductive numerical semigroups are studied, the involved Apéry sets are computed in a recursive way, and some tests to check whether a given numerical semigroups is inductive or not are provided.

A survey of consecutive patterns in permutations
Published • View Publication • BIB
A consecutive pattern in a permutation $π$ is another permutation $σ$ determined by the relative order of a subsequence of contiguous entries of $π$. Traditional notions such as descents, runs and peaks can be viewed as particular examples of consecutive patterns in permutations, but the systematic study of these patterns has flourished in the last 15 years, during which a variety of different techniques have been used. We survey some interesting developments in the subject, focusing on exact and asymptotic enumeration results, the classification of consecutive patterns into equivalence classes, and their applications to the study of one-dimensional dynamical systems.

A Reduced Upper Bound for an Edge-coloring Problem from Relation Algebra
Published • View Publication • BIB
We construct an edge-coloring of $K_{N}$ (for $N = 3432$) in colors red, dark blue, and light blue, such that there are no monochromatic blue triangles and such that the coloring satisfies a certain strong universal-existential property. The edge-coloring of $K_{N}$ depends on a cyclic coloring of $K_{17}$ whose two color classes are $K_{4}$-, $K_{4,3}$-, and $K_{5,2}$-free. This construction yields the smallest known representation of the relation algebra $32_{65}$, reducing the upper bound from 8192 to 3432.

On some variations of coloring problems of infinite words
Published • View Publication • BIB
Given a finite coloring (or finite partition) of the free semigroup $A^+$ over a set $A$, we consider various types of monochromatic factorizations of right sided infinite words $x\in A^ω$. Some stronger versions of the usual notion of monochromatic factorization are introduced. A factorization is called sequentially monochromatic when concatenations of consecutive blocks are monochromatic. A sequentially monochromatic factorization is called ultra monochromatic if any concatenation of arbitrary permuted blocks of the factorization has the same color of the single blocks. We establish links, and in some cases equivalences, between the existence of these factorizations and fundamental results in Ramsey theory including the infinite Ramsey theorem, Hindman's finite sums theorem, partition regularity of IP sets and the Milliken-Taylor theorem. We prove that for each finite set $A$ and each finite coloring $\varphi: A^+\rightarrow C,$ for almost all words $x\in A^ω,$ there exists $y$ in the subshift generated by $x$ admitting a $\varphi$-ultra monochromatic factorization, where "almost all" refers to the Bernoulli measure on $A^ω.$

Additively irreducible sequences in commutative semigroups
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $\mathcal{S}$ be a commutative semigroup, and let $T$ be a sequence of terms from the semigroup $\mathcal{S}$. We call $T$ an (additively) {\sl irreducible} sequence provided that no sum of its some terms vanishes. Given any element $a$ of $\mathcal{S}$, let ${\rm D}_a(\mathcal{S})$ be the largest length of the irreducible sequence such that the sum of all terms from the sequence is equal to $a$. In case that any ascending chain of principal ideals starting from the ideal $(a)$ terminates in $\mathcal{S}$, we found the sufficient and necessary conditions of ${\rm D}_a(\mathcal{S})$ being finite, and in particular, we gave sharp lower and upper bounds of ${\rm D}_a(\mathcal{S})$ in case ${\rm D}_a(\mathcal{S})$ is finite. We also applied the result to commutative unitary rings. As a special case, the value of ${\rm D}_a(\mathcal{S})$ was determined when $\mathcal{S}$ is the multiplicative semigroup of any finite commutative principal ideal unitary ring.
