We present an initial-seed-mutation formula for d-vectors of cluster variables in a cluster algebra. We also give two rephrasings of this recursion: one as a duality formula for d-vectors in the style of the g-vectors/c-vectors dualities of Nakanishi and Zelevinsky, and one as a formula expressing the highest powers in the Laurent expansion of a cluster variable in terms of the d-vectors of any cluster containing it. We prove that the initial-seed-mutation recursion holds in a varied collection of cluster algebras, but not in general. We conjecture further that the formula holds for source-sink moves on the initial seed in an arbitrary cluster algebra, and we prove this conjecture in the case of surfaces.

Multipartite hypergraphs achieving equality in Ryser's conjecture

A famous conjecture of Ryser is that in an $r$-partite hypergraph the covering number is at most $r-1$ times the matching number. If true, this is known to be sharp for $r$ for which there exists a projective plane of order $r-1$. We show that the conjecture, if true, is also sharp for the smallest previously open value, namely $r=7$. For $r\in\{6,7\}$, we find the minimal number $f(r)$ of edges in an intersecting $r$-partite hypergraph that has covering number at least $r-1$. We find that $f(r)$ is achieved only by linear hypergraphs for $r\le5$, but that this is not the case for $r\in\{6,7\}$. We also improve the general lower bound on $f(r)$, showing that $f(r)\ge 3.052r+O(1)$.
We show that a stronger form of Ryser's conjecture that was used to prove the $r=3$ case fails for all $r>3$. We also prove a fractional version of the following stronger form of Ryser's conjecture: in an $r$-partite hypergraph there exists a set $S$ of size at most $r-1$, contained either in one side of the hypergraph or in an edge, whose removal reduces the matching number by 1.
Unavoidable Multicoloured Families of Configurations
Balogh and Bollobás [{\em Combinatorica 25, 2005}] prove that for any $k$ there is a constant $f(k)$ such that any set system with at least $f(k)$ sets reduces to a $k$-star, an $k$-costar or an $k$-chain. They proved $f(k)<(2k)^{2^k}$. Here we improve it to $f(k)<2^{ck^2}$ for some constant $c>0$.
This is a special case of the following result on the multi-coloured forbidden configurations at 2 colours. Let $r$ be given. Then there exists a constant $c_r$ so that a matrix with entries drawn from $\{0,1,...,r-1\}$ with at least $2^{c_rk^2}$ different columns will have a $k\times k$ submatrix that can have its rows and columns permuted so that in the resulting matrix will be either $I_k(a,b)$ or $T_k(a,b)$ (for some $a\ne b\in \{0,1,..., r-1\}$), where $I_k(a,b)$ is the $k\times k$ matrix with $a$'s on the diagonal and $b$'s else where, $T_k(a,b)$ the $k\times k$ matrix with $a$'s below the diagonal and $b$'s elsewhere. We also extend to considering the bound on the number of distinct columns, given that the number of rows is $m$, when avoiding a $t k\times k$ matrix obtained by taking any one of the $k \times k$ matrices above and repeating each column $t$ times. We use Ramsey Theory.
Real roots of random polynomials: expectation and repulsion

Let $P_{n}(x)= \sum_{i=0}^n ξ_i x^i$ be a Kac random polynomial where the coefficients $ξ_i$ are iid copies of a given random variable $ξ$. Our main result is an optimal quantitative bound concerning real roots repulsion. This leads to an optimal bound on the probability that there is a double root.
As an application, we consider the problem of estimating the number of real roots of $P_n$, which has a long history and in particular was the main subject of a celebrated series of papers by Littlewood and Offord from the 1940s. We show, for a large and natural family of atom variables $ξ$, that the expected number of real roots of $P_n(x)$ is exactly $\frac{2}π \log n +C +o(1)$, where $C$ is an absolute constant depending on the atom variable $ξ$. Prior to this paper, such a result was known only for the case when $ξ$ is Gaussian.
Standard parabolic subsets of highest weight modules

In this paper we study certain fundamental and distinguished subsets of weights of an arbitrary highest weight module over a complex semisimple Lie algebra. These sets ${\rm wt}_J \mathbb{V}^λ$ are defined for each highest weight module $\mathbb{V}^λ$ and each subset $J$ of simple roots; we term them "standard parabolic subsets of weights". It is shown that for any highest weight module, the sets of simple roots whose corresponding standard parabolic subsets of weights are equal form intervals in the poset of subsets of the set of simple roots under containment. Moreover, we provide closed-form expressions for the maximum and minimum elements of the aforementioned intervals for all highest weight modules $\mathbb{V}^λ$ over semisimple Lie algebras $\mathfrak{g}$. Surprisingly, these formulas only require the Dynkin diagram of $\mathfrak{g}$ and the integrability data of $\mathbb{V}^λ$. As a consequence, we extend classical work by Satake, Borel-Tits, Vinberg, and Casselman, as well as recent variants by Cellini-Marietti to all highest weight modules.
We further compute the dimension, stabilizer, and vertex set of standard parabolic faces of highest weight modules, and show that they are completely determined by the aforementioned closed-form expressions. We also compute the $f$-polynomial and a minimal half-space representation of the convex hull of the set of weights. These results were recently shown for the adjoint representation of a simple Lie algebra, but analogues remain unknown for any other finite- or infinite-dimensional highest weight module. Our analysis is uniform and type-free, across all semisimple Lie algebras and for arbitrary highest weight modules.
Growth in Right-Angled Groups and Monoids
We derive functional relationships between spherical generating functions of graph monoids, right-angled Artin groups and right-angled Coxeter groups. We use these relationships to express the spherical generating function of a right-angled Artin group in terms of the clique polynomial of its defining graph. We also describe algorithms for computing the geodesic generating functions of these structures.
The Derivative Degree Sequences of Finite Simple Connected Graphs are Parking Functions
Parking functions are well researched and interesting results are found in the listed references and more. Some introductory results stemming from application to degree sequences of simple connected graphs are provided in this paper. Amongst others, the result namely, that a derivative degree sequence, $d_d(G) \in \Bbb D_d(G)= \{(\lceil\frac{d(v_1}{\ell}\rceil, \lceil\frac{d(v_2)}{\ell}\rceil, \lceil\frac{d(v_3)}{\ell}\rceil, ..., \lceil\frac{d(v_n)}{\ell}\rceil| \ell = d(v_i), \forall i,$ with $d(v_i)\geq 2\},$ of a simple connected graph $G$ is a parking function, is presented. We also introduce the concept of \emph{looping degree sequences} and the \emph{looping number}, $ξ(G)$. Four open problems are proposed as well.

For two graphs $T$ and $H$ with no isolated vertices and for an integer $n$, let $ex(n,T,H)$ denote the maximum possible number of copies of $T$ in an $H$-free graph on $n$ vertices. The study of this function when $T=K_2$ is a single edge is the main subject of extremal graph theory. In the present paper we investigate the general function, focusing on the cases of triangles, complete graphs, complete bipartite graphs and trees. These cases reveal several interesting phenomena. Three representative results are:
(i) $ex(n,K_3,C_5) \leq (1+o(1)) \frac{\sqrt 3}{2} n^{3/2},$
(ii) For any fixed $m$, $s \geq 2m-2$ and $t \geq (s-1)!+1 $, $ex(n,K_m,K_{s,t})=Θ(n^{m-\binom{m}{2}/s})$ and
(iii) For any two trees $H$ and $T$, $ex(n,T,H) =Θ(n^m)$ where $m=m(T,H)$ is an integer depending on $H$ and $T$ (its precise definition is given in Section 1).
The first result improves (slightly) an estimate of Bollobás and Győri.
The proofs combine combinatorial and probabilistic arguments with simple spectral techniques.
Chains in Weak Order Posets Associated to Involutions

The W-set of an element of a weak order poset is useful in the cohomological study of the closures of spherical subgroups in generalized flag varieties. We explicitly describe in a purely combinatorial manner the W-sets of the weak order posets of three different sets of involutions in the symmetric group, namely, the set of all involutions, the set of all fixed point free involutions, and the set of all involutions with signed fixed points (or "clans"). These distinguished sets of involutions parameterize Borel orbits in the classical symmetric spaces associated to the general linear group. In particular, we give a complete characterization of the maximal chains of an arbitrary lower order ideal in any of these three posets.
A transfer principle and applications to eigenvalue estimates for graphs

In this paper, we prove a variant of the Burger-Brooks transfer principle which, combined with recent eigenvalue bounds for surfaces, allows to obtain upper bounds on the eigenvalues of graphs as a function of their genus. More precisely, we show the existence of a universal constants $C$ such that the $k$-th eigenvalue $λ_k^{nr}$ of the normalized Laplacian of a graph $G$ of (geometric) genus $g$ on $n$ vertices satisfies $$λ_k^{nr}(G) \leq C \frac{d_{\max}(g+k)}{n},$$ where $d_{\max}$ denotes the maximum valence of vertices of the graph. This result is tight up to a change in the value of the constant $C$, and improves recent results of Kelner, Lee, Price and Teng on bounded genus graphs.
To show that the transfer theorem might be of independent interest, we relate eigenvalues of the Laplacian on a metric graph to the eigenvalues of its simple graph models, and discuss an application to the mesh partitioning problem, extending pioneering results of Miller-Teng-Thurston-Vavasis and Spielman-Tang to arbitrary meshes.
The Path Partition Conjecture is True and its Validity Yields Upper Bounds for Detour Chromatic Number and Star Chromatic Number
The detour order of a graph $G$, denoted $τ(G)$, is the order of a longest path in $G$. A partition $(A, B)$ of $V(G)$ such that $τ(\langle A \rangle) \leq a$ and $τ(\langle B \rangle) \leq b$ is called an $(a, b)$-partition of $G$. A graph $G$ is called $τ$-partitionable if $G$ has an $(a, b)$-partition for every pair $(a, b)$ of positive integers such that $a + b = τ(G)$. The well-known Path Partition Conjecture states that every graph is $τ$-partitionable. In \cite{df07} Dunber and Frick have shown that if every 2-connected graph is $τ$-partitionable then every graph is $τ$-partitionable. In this paper we show that every 2-connected graph is $τ$-partitionable. Thus, our result settles the Path Partition Conjecture affirmatively. We prove the following two theorems as the implications of the validity of the Path Partition Conjecture.\\ {\bf Theorem 1:} For every graph $G$, $χ_s(G) \leq τ(G)$, where $χ_s(G)$ is the star chromatic number of a graph $G$. The $n^{th}$ detour chromatic number of a graph $G$, denoted $χ_n(G)$, is the minimum number of colours required for colouring the vertices of $G$ such that no path of order greater than $n$ is mono coloured. These chromatic numbers were introduced by Chartrand, Gellar and Hedetniemi\cite{cg68} as a generalization of vertex chromatic number $χ(G)$.\\ {\bf Theorem 2:} For every graph $G$ and for every $n \geq 1$, $χ_n(G) \leq \left\lceil \frac{τ_n(G)}{n} \right\rceil$, where $χ_n(G)$ denote the $n^{th}$ detour chromatic number.\\ Theorem 2 settles the conjecture of Frick and Bullock \cite{fb01} that $χ_n(G) \leq \left\lceil \frac{τ(G)}{n} \right\rceil$, for every graph $G$, for every $n \geq 1$, affirmatively.
A new encoding of coalescent processes. Applications to the additive and multiplicative cases

We revisit the discrete additive and multiplicative coalescents, starting with $n$ particles with unit mass. These cases are known to be related to some "combinatorial coalescent processes": a time reversal of a fragmentation of Cayley trees or a parking scheme in the additive case, and the random graph process $(G(n,p))_p$ in the multiplicative case. Time being fixed, encoding these combinatorial objects in real-valued processes indexed by the line is the key to describing the asymptotic behaviour of the masses as $n\to +\infty$.
We propose to use the Prim order on the vertices instead of the classical breadth-first (or depth-first) traversal to encode the combinatorial coalescent processes. In the additive case, this yields interesting connections between the different representations of the process. In the multiplicative case, it allows one to answer to a stronger version of an open question of Aldous [Ann. Probab., vol. 25, pp. 812--854, 1997]: we prove that not only the sequence of (rescaled) masses, seen as a process indexed by the time $λ$, converges in distribution to the reordered sequence of lengths of the excursions above the current minimum of a Brownian motion with parabolic drift $(B_t+λt - t^2/2, t\geq 0)$, but we also construct a version of the standard augmented multiplicative coalescent of Bhamidi, Budhiraja and Wang [Probab. Theory Rel., to appear] using an additional Poisson point process.
Spanning trees with nonseparating paths

We consider questions related to the existence of spanning trees in graphs with the property that after the removal of any path in the tree the graph remains connected. We show that, for planar graphs, the existence of trees with this property is closely related to the Hamiltonicity of the graph. For graphs with a 1- or 2-vertex cut, the Hamiltonicity also plays a central role. We also deal with spanning trees satisfying this property restricted to paths arising from fundamental cycles. The cycle space of a graph can be generated by the fundamental cycles of any spanning tree, and Tutte showed, that for a 3-connected graph, it can be generated by nonseparating cycles. We are also interested in the existence of a fundamental basis consisting of nonseparating cycles.
A bound on a convexity measure for point sets

A planar point set is in convex position precisely when it has a convex polygonization, that is, a polygonization with maximum interior angle measure at most π. We can thus talk about the convexity of a set of points in terms of the minimum, taken over all polygonizations, of the maximum interior angle. The main result presented here is a nontrivial combinatorial upper bound of this min-max value in terms of the number of points in the set. Motivated by a particular construction, we also pose a natural conjecture for the best upper bound.
A recurrence formula for Jack connection coefficients
This article is devoted to the study of Jack connection coefficients, a generalization of the connection coefficients of the classical commutative subalgebras of the group algebra of the symmetric group closely related to the theory of Jack symmetric functions. First introduced by Goulden and Jackson (1996) these numbers indexed by three partitions of a given integer $n$ and the Jack parameter $α$ are defined as the coefficients in the power sum expansion of the Cauchy sum for Jack symmetric functions. While very little is known about them, examples of computations for small values of $n$ tend to show that the nice properties of the special cases $α=1$ (connection coefficients of the class algebra) and $α= 2$ (connection coefficients of the double coset algebra) extend to general $α$. Goulden and Jackson conjectured that Jack connection coefficients are polynomials in $β= α-1$ with non negative integer coefficients given by some statistics on matchings on a set of $2n$ elements, the so called Matchings-Jack conjecture. In this paper we look at the case when two of the integer partitions are equal to the single part $(n)$ and use a framework by Lasalle (2008) for Jack symmetric functions to show that the coefficients satisfy a simple recurrence formula that makes their computation very effective and allow a better understanding of their properties. In particular we prove the Matchings-Jack conjecture in this case. Furthermore, we provide a bijective proof of the recurrence formula for $α\in \{1,2\}$ using the combinatorial interpretation of the coefficients for these specific values of the Jack parameter. Finally we exhibit the polynomial properties of more general coefficients where the two single part partitions are replaced by an arbitrary number of integer partitions either equal to $(n)$ or $[1^{n-2}2]$.
The complexity of counting poset and permutation patterns
We introduce a notion of pattern occurrence that generalizes both classical permutation patterns as well as poset containment. Many questions about pattern statistics and avoidance generalize naturally to this setting, and we focus on functional complexity problems -- particularly those that arise by constraining the order dimensions of the pattern and text posets. We show that counting the number of induced, injective occurrences among dimension 2 posets is #P-hard; enumerating the linear extensions that occur in realizers of dimension 2 posets can be done in polynomial time, while for unconstrained dimension it is GI-complete; counting not necessarily induced, injective occurrences among dimension 2 posets is #P-hard; counting injective or not necessarily injective occurrences of an arbitrary pattern in a dimension 1 text is #P-hard, although it is in FP if the pattern poset is constrained to have bounded intrinsic width; and counting injective occurrences of a dimension 1 pattern in an arbitrary text is #P-hard, while it is in FP for bounded dimension texts. This framework easily leads to a number of open questions, chief among which are (1) is it #P-hard to count the number of occurrences of a dimension 2 pattern in a dimension 1 text, and (2) is it #P-hard to count the number of texts which avoid a given pattern?
Equivariant semidefinite lifts of regular polygons

Given a polytope P in $\mathbb{R}^n$, we say that P has a positive semidefinite lift (psd lift) of size d if one can express P as the linear projection of an affine slice of the positive semidefinite cone $\mathbf{S}^d_+$. If a polytope P has symmetry, we can consider equivariant psd lifts, i.e. those psd lifts that respect the symmetry of P. One of the simplest families of polytopes with interesting symmetries are regular polygons in the plane, which have played an important role in the study of linear programming lifts (or extended formulations). In this paper we study equivariant psd lifts of regular polygons. We first show that the standard Lasserre/sum-of-squares hierarchy for the regular N-gon requires exactly ceil(N/4) iterations and thus yields an equivariant psd lift of size linear in N. In contrast we show that one can construct an equivariant psd lift of the regular 2^n-gon of size 2n-1, which is exponentially smaller than the psd lift of the sum-of-squares hierarchy. Our construction relies on finding a sparse sum-of-squares certificate for the facet-defining inequalities of the regular 2^n-gon, i.e., one that only uses a small (logarithmic) number of monomials. Since any equivariant LP lift of the regular 2^n-gon must have size 2^n, this gives the first example of a polytope with an exponential gap between sizes of equivariant LP lifts and equivariant psd lifts. Finally we prove that our construction is essentially optimal by showing that any equivariant psd lift of the regular N-gon must have size at least logarithmic in N.

We study the moduli space of metric graphs that arise from tropical plane curves. There are far fewer such graphs than tropicalizations of classical plane curves. For fixed genus $g$, our moduli space is a stacky fan whose cones are indexed by regular unimodular triangulations of Newton polygons with $g$ interior lattice points. It has dimension $2g+1$ unless $g \leq 3$ or $g = 7$. We compute these spaces explicitly for $g \leq 5$.

This paper aims to find the most general combinatorial conditions under which a moment-angle complex $(D^2,S^1)^K$ is a co-$H$-space, thus splitting unstably in terms of its full subcomplexes. In this way we study to which extent the conjecture holds that a moment-angle complex over a Golod simplicial complex is a co-$H$-space. Our main tool is a certain generalisation of the theory of labelled configuration spaces.
