Congruences for Domb and Almkvist-Zudilin numbers
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper we prove some transformation formulae for congruences modulo a prime and deduce some congruences for Domb numbers and Almkvist-Zudilin numbers. We also pose some conjectures on congruences modulo prime powers.

Binary Linear Codes, Dimers and Hypermatrices
Published • View Publication • BIB
We show that the weight enumerator of any binary linear code is equal to the permanent of a 3-dimensional hypermatrix (3-matrix). We also show that each permanent is a determinant of a 3-matrix. As an application we write the dimer partition function of a finite 3-dimensional cubic lattice as the determinant of the vertex-adjacency 3-matrix of a 2-dimensional simplicial complex which preserves the natural embedding of the cubic lattice.

Trees and spatial topology change in CDT
Published in J. Phys. A: Math. Theor. 46 (2013) 315201 • View Publication • BIB
Generalized causal dynamical triangulations (generalized CDT) is a model of two-dimensional quantum gravity in which a limited number of spatial topology changes is allowed to occur. We solve the model at the discretized level using bijections between quadrangulations and trees. In the continuum limit (scaling limit) the amplitudes are shown to agree with known formulas and explicit expressions are obtained for loop propagators and two-point functions. It is shown that from a combinatorial point of view generalized CDT can be viewed as the scaling limit of planar maps with a finite number of faces and we determine the distance function on this ensemble of planar maps. Finally, the relation with planar maps is used to illuminate a mysterious identity of certain continuum cylinder amplitudes.

Mesh patterns with superfluous mesh
Published • View Publication • BIB
Mesh patterns are a generalization of classical permutation patterns that encompass classical, bivincular, Bruhat-restricted patterns, and some barred patterns. In this paper, we describe all mesh patterns whose avoidance is coincident with classical avoidance, in a sense declaring that the additional data of a mesh was unnecessary for these patterns. We also describe the permutations having the fewest superfluous meshes, and the permutations having the most, enumerating the superfluous meshes in each case.

Some planar monomials in characteristic 2
Published in Annals of Combinatorics 18 (2014), 723-729 • View Publication • BIB
Planar functions over finite fields give rise to finite projective planes and other combinatorial objects. They were originally defined only in odd characteristic, but recently Zhou introduced a definition in even characteristic which yields similar applications. In this paper we show that certain functions over $\mathbb{F}_{2^r}$ are planar, which proves a conjecture of Schmidt and Zhou. The key to our proof is a new result about the $\mathbb{F}_{q^3}$-rational points on the degree-$(q-1)$ Fermat curve $x^{q-1}+y^{q-1}=z^{q-1}$.

Fiedler Vectors and Elongation of Graphs: A Threshold Phenomenon on a Particular Class of Trees
Let $G$ be a graph. Its laplacian matrix $L(G)$ is positive and we consider eigenvectors of its first non-null eigenvalue that are called Fiedler vector. They have been intensively used in spectral partitioning problems due to their good empirical properties. More recently Fiedler vectors have been also popularized in the computer graphics community to describe elongation of shapes. In more technical terms, authors have conjectured that extrema of Fiedler vectors can yield the diameter of a graph. In this work we present (FED) property for a graph $G$, i.e. the fact that diameter of a graph can be obtain by Fiedler vectors. We study in detail a parametric family of trees that gives indeed a counter example for the previous conjecture but reveals a threshold phenomenon for (FED) property. We end by an exhaustive enumeration of trees with at most 20 vertices for which (FED) is true and some perspectives.

Counting matroids in minor-closed classes
Published • View Publication • BIB
A flat cover is a collection of flats identifying the non-bases of a matroid. We introduce the notion of cover complexity, the minimal size of such a flat cover, as a measure for the complexity of a matroid, and present bounds on the number of matroids on $n$ elements whose cover complexity is bounded. We apply cover complexity to show that the class of matroids without an $N$-minor is asymptotically small in case $N$ is one of the sparse paving matroids $U_{2,k}$, $U_{3,6}$, $P_6$, $Q_6$, or $R_6$, thus confirming a few special cases of a conjecture due to Mayhew, Newman, Welsh, and Whittle. On the other hand, we show a lower bound on the number of matroids without $M(K_4)$-minor which asymptoticaly matches the best known lower bound on the number of all matroids, due to Knuth.

Homometric sets in trees
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $G = (V,E)$ denote a simple graph with the vertex set $V$ and the edge set $E$. The profile of a vertex set $V'\subseteq V$ denotes the multiset of pairwise distances between the vertices of $V'$. Two disjoint subsets of $V$ are \emph{homometric}, if their profiles are the same. If $G$ is a tree on $n$ vertices we prove that its vertex sets contains a pair of disjoint homometric subsets of size at least $\sqrt{n/2} - 1$. Previously it was known that such a pair of size at least roughly $n^{1/3}$ exists. We get a better result in case of haircomb trees, in which we are able to find a pair of disjoint homometric sets of size at least $cn^{2/3}$ for a constant $c > 0$.
Clique cycle-transversals in distance-hereditary graphs
A cycle-transversal of a graph G is a subset T of V(G) such that T intersects every cycle of G. A clique cycle-transversal, or cct for short, is a cycle-transversal which is a clique. Recognizing graphs which admit a cct can be done in polynomial time; however, no structural characterization of such graphs is known. We characterize distance-hereditary graphs admitting a cct in terms of forbidden induced subgraphs. This extends similar results for chordal graphs and cographs.

Restricted Successive Minima
Published in Pacific J. Math. 269 (2014) 341-354 • View Publication • BIB
We give bounds on the successive minima of an $o$-symmetric convex body under the restriction that the lattice points realizing the successive minima are not contained in a collection of forbidden sublattices. Our investigations extend former results to forbidden full-dimensional lattices, to all successive minima and complement former results in the lower dimensional case.

Radon Numbers for Trees
Published • View Publication • BIB
Many interesting problems are obtained by attempting to generalize classical results on convexity in Euclidean spaces to other convexity spaces, in particular to convexity spaces on graphs. In this paper we consider $P_3$-convexity on graphs. A set $U$ of vertices in a graph $G$ is $P_3$-convex if every vertex not in $U$ has at most one neighbour in $U$. More specifically, we consider Radon numbers for $P_3$-convexity in trees. Tverberg's theorem states that every set of $(k-1)(d+1)-1$ points in $\mathbb{R}^d$ can be partitioned into $k$ sets with intersecting convex hulls. As a special case of Eckhoff's conjecture, we show that a similar result holds for $P_3$-convexity in trees. A set $U$ of vertices in a graph $G$ is called free, if no vertex of $G$ has more than one neighbour in $U$. We prove an inequality relating the Radon number for $P_3$-convexity in trees with the size of a maximal free set.

How to partition or count an abstract simplicial complex, given its facets
Given are the facets of an abstract (finite) simplicial complex SC. We show how to partition SC into few pieces, each one compactly encoded by the use of wildcards. Such a representation is useful for the optimization of a target function SC -> Z, as well as in combinatorial commutative algebra and Frequent Set Mining. Merely calculating the face-numbers of SC can be done faster than partitioning SC. Our method compares favorably to inclusion-exclusion and binary decision diagram

Denominator vectors and compatibility degrees in cluster algebras of finite type
Published in Trans. Amer. Math. Soc., 367:1421-1439, 2015 • View Publication • BIB
We present two simple descriptions of the denominator vectors of the cluster variables of a cluster algebra of finite type, with respect to any initial cluster seed: one in terms of the compatibility degrees between almost positive roots defined by S. Fomin and A. Zelevinsky, and the other in terms of the root function of a certain subword complex. These descriptions only rely on linear algebra. They provide two simple proofs of the known fact that the denominator vector of any non-initial cluster variable with respect to any initial cluster seed has non-negative entries and is different from zero.
Substitution and $χ$-Boundedness
Published in M. Chudnovsky, I. Penev, A. Scott and N. Trotignon. Substitutions and $χ$-boundedness. Journal of Combinatorial Theory, Series B, 103(5):567-586, 2013 • View Publication • BIB
A class $\mathcal{G}$ of graphs is said to be {\em $χ$-bounded} if there is a function $f:\mathbb{N} \rightarrow \mathbb{R}$ such that for all $G \in \mathcal{G}$ and all induced subgraphs $H$ of $G$, $χ(H) \leq f(ω(H))$. In this paper, we show that if $\mathcal{G}$ is a $χ$-bounded class, then so is the closure of $\mathcal{G}$ under any one of the following three operations: substitution, gluing along a clique, and gluing along a bounded number of vertices. Furthermore, if $\mathcal{G}$ is $χ$-bounded by a polynomial (respectively: exponential) function, then the closure of $\mathcal{G}$ under substitution is also $χ$-bounded by some polynomial (respectively: exponential) function. In addition, we show that if $\mathcal{G}$ is a $χ$-bounded class, then the closure of $\mathcal{G}$ under the operations of gluing along a clique and gluing along a bounded number of vertices together is also $χ$-bounded, as is the closure of $\mathcal{G}$ under the operations of substitution and gluing along a clique together.

Mutations of fake weighted projective planes
Published in Proceedings of the Edinburgh Mathematical Society, 59 (2016), no. 2, 271-285 • View Publication • BIB
In previous work by Coates, Galkin, and the authors, the notion of mutation between lattice polytopes was introduced. Such a mutation gives rise to a deformation between the corresponding toric varieties. In this paper we study one-step mutations that correspond to deformations between weighted projective planes, giving a complete characterisation of such mutations in terms of T-singularities. We show also that the weights involved satisfy Diophantine equations, generalising results of Hacking-Prokhorov.

On Sharp Thresholds of Monotone Properties: Bourgain's Proof Revisited
The purpose of this expository note is to give the proof of a theorem of Bourgain with some additional details and updated notation. The theorem first appeared as an appendix to the breakthrough paper by Friedgut, \emph{Sharp Thresholds of graph properties and the $k$-SAT Problem}. Throughout, we use notation and definitions akin to those in O'Donnell's book, \emph{Analysis of Boolean Functions}.

From Integer Sequences to Block Designs via Counting Walks in Graphs
We define numbers of the type Oj(N) and Ej(N) and the corresponding integer sequences. We prove that these integer sequences, e.g., SO(N) and SE(N) correspond to the number of odd and even walks in complete graphs. We then prove that there is a unique family of graphs which have exactly the same sequence of odd walks between connected nodes and of even walks between pairs of nodes at distance two, respectively. These graphs are obtained as the Kronecker product. We show that they are the incidence graphs of block designs, are distance-regular and Ramanujan graphs.

Quasirandom group actions
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $G$ be a finite group acting transitively on a set $Ω$. We study what it means for this action to be {\it quasirandom}, thereby generalizing Gowers' study of quasirandomness in groups. We connect this notion of quasirandomness to an upper bound for the convolution of functions associated with the action of $G$ on $Ω$. This convolution bound allows us to give sufficient conditions such that sets $S,T\subset G$ and $Γ\subseteq Ω$ contain elements $s\in S, t\in T, γ\inΓ$ such that $s(γ)=t$. Other consequences include an analogue of `the Gowers trick' of Nikolov and Pyber for general group actions, a sum-product type theorem for large subsets of a finite field, as well as applications to expanders and to the study of the diameter and width of a finite simple group.
Compression of Periodic Complementary Sequences and Applications
Published in Des. Codes Cryptogr. (2015) 74: 365--377 • View Publication • BIB
A collection of complex sequences of length v is complementary if the sum of their periodic autocorrelation function values at all non-zero shifts is constant. For a complex sequence A=[a_0,a_1,...,a_{v-1}] of length v=dm we define the m-compressed sequence A^{(d)} of length d whose terms are the sums a_i + a_{i+d} + ... + a_{i+(m-1)d}. We prove that the m-compression of a complementary collection of sequences is also complementary. The compression procedure can be used to simplify the construction of complementary {+1,-1}-sequences of composite length. In particular, we construct several supplementary difference sets (v;r,s;lambda) with v even and lambda=(r+s)-v/2, given here for the first time. There are 15 normalized parameter sets (v;r,s;lambda) with v <= 50 for which the existence question was open. We resolve all but one of these cases.
