In a 2008 paper, the first author and Van Tuyl proved that the regularity of the edge ideal of a graph G is at most one greater than the matching number of G. In this note, we provide a generalization of this result to any square-free monomial ideal. We define a 2-collage in a simple hypergraph to be a collection of edges with the property that for any edge E of the hypergraph, there exists an edge F in the collage such that |E \ F| < 2. The Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of the edge ideal of a simple hypergraph is bounded above by a multiple of the minimum size of a 2-collage. We also give a recursive formula to compute the regularity of a vertex-decomposable hypergraph. Finally, we show that regularity in the graph case is bounded by a certain statistic based on maximal packings of nondegenerate star subgraphs.

We investigate pattern avoidance in alternating permutations and generalizations thereof. First, we study pattern avoidance in an alternating analogue of Young diagrams. In particular, we extend Babson-West's notion of shape-Wilf equivalence to apply to alternating permutations and so generalize results of Backelin-West-Xin and Ouchterlony to alternating permutations. Second, we study pattern avoidance in the more general context of permutations with restricted ascents and descents. We consider a question of Lewis regarding permutations that are the reading words of thickened staircase Young tableaux, that is, permutations that have (k - 1) ascents followed by a descent, followed by (k - 1) ascents, et cetera. We determine the relative sizes of the sets of pattern-avoiding (k - 1)-ascent permutations in terms of the forbidden pattern. Furthermore, we give inequalities in the sizes of sets of pattern-avoiding permutations in this context that arise from further extensions of shape-equivalence type enumerations.

For every prime $p>3$ we prove that $Q \times \mathbb{Z}_p$ and $\mathbb{Z}_2^3 \times \mathbb{Z}_p$ are DCI- groups. This result completes the description of CI-groups of order $8p$.

We study a sorting machine consisting of two stacks in series where the first stack has the added restriction such that entries in the stack must be in decreasing order from top to bottom. We give the basis of the class of permutations that are sortable by this machine which shows that it is enumerated by the Schröder numbers.
Full automorphism groups of association schemes based on isotropic subspaces
The set of all subspaces of a given dimension in a finite classical polar space has a structure of a symmetric association scheme. If the dimension is zero, this is the scheme of the collinearity graph of the space; If the dimension is maximum, it is the dual polar scheme. In this note, we determine the full automorphism group of this scheme.

We study the bounded regions in a generic slice of the hyperplane arrangement in $\mathbb{R}^n$ consisting of the hyperplanes defined by $x_i$ and $x_i+x_j$. The bounded regions are in bijection with several classes of combinatorial objects, including the ordered partitions of $[n]$ all of whose left-to-right minima occur at odd locations and the drawings of rooted plane trees with $n+1$ vertices. These are sequences of rooted plane trees such that each tree in a sequence can be obtained from the next one by removing a leaf.
Shattering Thresholds for Random Systems of Sets, Words, and Permutations
This paper considers a problem that relates to the theories of covering arrays, permutation patterns, Vapnik-Chervonenkis (VC) classes, and probability thresholds. Specifically, we want to find the number of subsets of [n]:={1,2,....,n} we need to randomly select, in a certain probability space, so as to respectively "shatter" all t-subsets of [n]. Moving from subsets to words, we ask for the number of n-letter words on a q-letter alphabet that are needed to shatter all t-subwords of the q^n words of length n. Finally, we explore the number of random permutations of [n] needed to shatter (specializing to t=3), all length 3 permutation patterns in specified positions. We uncover a very sharp zero-one probability threshold for the emergence of such shattering; Talagrand's isoperimetric inequality in product spaces is used as a key tool.
Simple random walk on distance-regular graphs
A survey is presented of known results concerning simple random walk on the class of distance-regular graphs. One of the highlights is that electric resistance and hitting times between points can be explicitly calculated and given strong bounds for, which leads in turn to bounds on cover times, mixing times, etc. Also discussed are harmonic functions, moments of hitting and cover times, the Green's function, and the cutoff phenomenon. The main goal of the paper is to present these graphs as a natural setting in which to study simple random walk, and to stimulate further research in the field.

This paper gives a complete proof of a theorem of de Bruijn that classifies additive systems for the nonnegative integers, that is, families $\mca = (A_i)_{i\in I}$ of sets of nonnegative integers, each set containing 0, such that every nonnegative integer can be written uniquely in the form $\sum_{i\in I} a_i$ with $a_i \in A_i$ for all $i$ and $a_i \neq 0$ for only finitely many $i$. All indecomposable additive systems are determined.
The skew energy of random oriented graphs

Given a graph $G$, let $G^σ$ be an oriented graph of $G$ with the orientation $σ$ and skew-adjacency matrix $S(G^σ)$. The skew energy of the oriented graph $G^σ$, denoted by $\mathcal{E}_S(G^σ)$, is defined as the sum of the absolute values of all the eigenvalues of $S(G^σ)$. In this paper, we study the skew energy of random oriented graphs and formulate an exact estimate of the skew energy for almost all oriented graphs by generalizing Wigner's semicircle law. Moreover, we consider the skew energy of random regular oriented graphs $G_{n,d}^σ$, and get an exact estimate of the skew energy for almost all regular oriented graphs.

If p is a prime and n a positive integer, let v(n) denote the exponent of p in n, and u(n)=n/p^{v(n)} the unit part of n. If k is a positive integer not divisible by p, we show that the p-adic limit of (-1)^{pke} u((kp^e)!) as e goes to infinity is a well-defined p-adic integer, which we call z_k. In terms of these, we give a formula for the p-adic limit of binom{a p^e +c, b p^e +d) as e goes to infinity, which we call binom(a p^\infty +c, b p^\infty +d). Here a \ge b are positive integers, and c and d are integers.
On expanders from the action of GL(2,Z)
Consider the undirected graph $G_n=(V_n, E_n)$ where $V_n = (Z/nZ)^2$ and $E_n$ contains an edge from $(x,y)$ to $(x+1,y)$, $(x,y+1)$, $(x+y,y)$, and $(x,y+x)$ for every $(x,y) \in V_n$. Gabber and Galil, following Margulis, gave an elementary proof that ${G_n}$ forms an expander family. In this note, we present a somewhat simpler proof of this fact, and demonstrate its utility by isolating a key property of the linear transformations $(x,y) -> (x+y,x), (x,y+x)$ that yields expansion.
As an example, consider any invertible, integral matrix $S \in GL_2(Z)$ and let $G^S_n = (V_n, E^S_n)$ where $E^S_n$ contains, for every $(x,y) \in V_n$, an edge from $(x,y)$ to $(x+1,y)$, $(x,y+1)$, $S(x,y)$, and $S^T(x,y)$, where $S^T$ denotes the transpose of $S$. Then {G_n^S} forms an expander family if and only if a related infinite graph has positive Cheeger constant. This latter property turns out to be elementary to analyze and can be used to show that {G_n^S} are expanders precisely when the trace of S is non-zero and S is not equal to its transpose. We also present some other generalizations.
Tatami Maker: A combinatorially rich mechanical game board
Japanese tatami mats are often arranged so that no four mats meet. This local restriction imposes a rich combinatorial structure when applied to monomino-domino coverings of rectilinear grids. We describe a modular, mechanical game board, prototyped with a desktop 3D printer, that enforces this restriction, and transforms tatami pen-and- paper puzzles into interactive sculptures. We review some recent mathematical discoveries on tatami coverings and present five new combinatorial games implemented on the game board.
Infinite Matroids and Determinacy of Games
Solving a problem of Diestel and Pott, we construct a large class of infinite matroids. These can be used to provide counterexamples against the natural extension of the Well-quasi-ordering-Conjecture to infinite matroids and to show that the class of planar infinite matroids does not have a universal matroid.
The existence of these matroids has a connection to Set Theory in that it corresponds to the Determinacy of certain games. To show that our construction gives matroids, we introduce a new very simple axiomatization of the class of countable tame matroids.

We report the number of semigroups with 9 elements up to isomorphism or anti-isomorphism to be 52,989,400,714,478 and up to isomorphism to be 105,978,177,936,292. We obtained these results by combining computer search with recently published formulae for the number of nilpotent semigroups of degree 3. We further provide a complete account of the automorphism groups of the semigroups with at most 9 elements. We use this information to deduce that there are 148,195,347,518,186 distinct associative binary operations on an 8-element set and 38,447,365,355,811,944,462 on a 9-element set.

We consider the space $\mathcal{M}_{2,1}$ --- the open moduli space of complex curves of genus 2 with one marked point. Using language of chord diagrams we describe the cell structure of $\mathcal{M}_{2,1}$ and cell adjacency. This allows us to construct matrices of boundary operators and compute Betty numbers of $\mathcal{M}_{2,1}$ over $\mathbb{Q}$.
Neutrality in the Graph Coloring Problem

The graph coloring problem is often investigated in the literature. Many insights about many neighboring solutions with the same fitness value are raised but as far as we know, no deep analysis of this neutrality has ever been conducted in the literature. In this paper, we quantify the neutrality of some hard instances of the graph coloring problem. This neutrality property has to be detected as it impacts the search process. Indeed, local optima may belong to plateaus that represents a barrier for local search methods. In this work, we also aim at pointing out the interest of exploiting neutrality during the search. Therefore, a generic local search dedicated to neutral problems, NILS, is performed on several hard instances.

There are several versions of permutation pattern avoidance that have arisen in the literature, and some known examples of two different types of pattern avoidance coinciding. In this paper, we examine barred patterns and vincular patterns. Answering a question of Steingrimsson, we determine when barred pattern avoidance coincides with avoiding a finite set of vincular patterns, and when vincular pattern avoidance coincides with avoiding a finite set of barred patterns. There are 720 barred patterns with this property, each having between 3 and 7 letters, of which at most 2 are barred, and there are 48 vincular patterns with this property, each having between 2 and 4 letters and exactly one bond.

In this paper we obtain a new sufficient condition for the existence of directed cycles of length 4 in oriented bipartite graphs. As a corollary, a conjecture of H. Li is confirmed. As an application, a sufficient condition for the existence of rainbow cycles of length 4 in bipartite edge-colored graphs is obtained.
