Schur times Schubert via the Fomin-Kirillov algebra
We study multiplication of any Schubert polynomial $\mathfrak{S}_w$ by a Schur polynomial $s_λ$ (the Schubert polynomial of a Grassmannian permutation) and the expansion of this product in the ring of Schubert polynomials. We derive explicit nonnegative combinatorial expressions for the expansion coefficients for certain special partitions $λ$, including hooks and the 2x2 box. We also prove combinatorially the existence of such nonnegative expansion when the Young diagram of $λ$ is a hook plus a box at the (2,2) corner. We achieve this by evaluating Schubert polynomials at the Dunkl elements of the Fomin-Kirillov algebra and proving special cases of the nonnegativity conjecture of Fomin and Kirillov.
This approach works in the more general setup of the (small) quantum cohomology ring of the complex flag manifold and the corresponding (3-point) Gromov-Witten invariants. We provide an algebro-combinatorial proof of the nonnegativity of the Gromov-Witten invariants in these cases, and present combinatorial expressions for these coefficients.
From flag complexes to banner complexes

A notion of an $i$-banner simplicial complex is introduced. For various values of $i$, these complexes interpolate between the class of flag complexes and the class of all simplicial complexes. Examples of simplicial spheres of an arbitrary dimension that are $(i+1)$-banner but not $i$-banner are constructed. It is shown that several theorems for flag complexes have appropriate $i$-banner analogues. Among them are (1) the codimension-$(i+j-1)$ skeleton of an $i$-banner homology sphere $Δ$ is $2(i+j)$-Cohen--Macaulay for all $0\leq j\leq \dimΔ+1-i$, and (2) for every $i$-banner simplicial complex $Δ$ there exists a balanced complex $Γ$ with the same number of vertices as $Δ$ whose face numbers of dimension $i-1$ and higher coincide with those of $Δ$.

This work connects the idea of a "blow-up" of a quiver with that of injectivity, showing that for a class of monic maps $Φ$, a quiver is $Φ$-injective if and only if all blow-ups of it are as well. This relationship is then used to characterize all quivers that are injective with respect to the natural embedding of $P_{n}$ into $C_{n}$.
Cohen-Macaulay $r$-partite graphs with minimal clique cover
In this note, we give some necessary conditions for an $r$-partite graph such that the edge ring of the graph is Cohen-Macaulay. It is proved that if $G$ is an $r$-partite Cohen-Macaulay graph which is covered by some disjoint cliques of size $r$, then the clique cover is unique.

We describe a method to construct well-posed initial value problems for not necessarily integrable equations on not necessarily simply connected quad-graphs. Although the method does not always provide a well-posed initial value problem (not all quad-graphs admit well-posed initial value problems) it is effective in the class of rhombic embeddable quad-graphs.
EL-labelings and canonical spanning trees for subword complexes

We describe edge labelings of the increasing flip graph of a subword complex on a finite Coxeter group, and study applications thereof. On the one hand, we show that they provide canonical spanning trees of the facet-ridge graph of the subword complex, describe inductively these trees, and present their close relations to greedy facets. Searching these trees yields an efficient algorithm to generate all facets of the subword complex, which extends the greedy flip algorithm for pointed pseudotriangulations. On the other hand, when the increasing flip graph is a Hasse diagram, we show that the edge labeling is indeed an EL-labeling and derive further combinatorial properties of paths in the increasing flip graph. These results apply in particular to Cambrian lattices, in which case a similar EL-labeling was recently studied by M. Kallipoliti and H. Mühle.

We consider numbers and sizes of independent sets in graphs with minimum degree at least $d$, when the number $n$ of vertices is large. In particular we investigate which of these graphs yield the maximum numbers of independent sets of different sizes, and which yield the largest random independent sets. We establish a strengthened form of a conjecture of Galvin concerning the first of these topics.

A generalization of Vassiliev's planarity criterion
Motivated by his studies in knot theory V. Vassiliev introduced $X$-graphs as regular 4-valent graph with a structure of pairs of opposite edges at each vertex. He conjectured the conditions under which $X$-graph can be embedded into a plane respecting the the $X$-structure at every vertex. The conjecture was proved by V.Manturov. Here we generalize these results for graphs with vertices of valency 4 or 6, *-graphs. A problem of such generalization was posted by A.Skopenkov.

For n=1,2,3,... let N_n(q) denote the number of monic irreducible polynomials over the finite field F_q. We mainly show that the sequence N_n(q)^{1/n} (n>e^{3+7/(q-1)^2}) is strictly increasing and the sequence N_{n+1}(q)^{1/(n+1)}/N_n(q)^{1/n} (n>=5.835*10^{14}) is strictly decreasing. We also prove that if q>8 then N_{n+1}(q)/N_n(q) (n=1,2,3,...) is strictly increasing.

In [Decompositions and statistics for β(1,0)-trees and nonseparable permutations, Advances Appl. Math. 42 (2009) 313--328] we introduced an involution, h, on β(1,0)-trees. We neglected, however, to prove that h indeed is an involution. In this note we provide the missing proof. We also refine an equidistribution result given in the same paper.

In this paper, we show that a set of q+a hyperplanes, q>13, a<(q-10)/4, that does not cover PG(n,q), does not cover at least q^(n-1)-aq^(n-2) points, and show that this lower bound is sharp. If the number of non- covered points is at most q^(n-1), then we show that all non-covered points are contained in one hyperplane. Finally, using a recent result of Blokhuis, Brouwer, and Szonyi [3], we remark that the bound on a for which these results are valid can be improved to a<(q-2)/3 and that this upper bound on a is sharp

In this paper, we show that a small minimal blocking set with exponent e in PG(n,p^t), p prime, spanning a (t/e-1)-dimensional space, is an F_p^e-linear set, provided that p>5(t/e)-11. As a corollary, we get that all small minimal blocking sets in PG(n,p^t), p prime, p>5t-11, spanning a (t-1)-dimensional space, are F_p-linear, hence confirming the linearity conjecture for blocking sets in this particular case.
An infinite family of tight triangulations of manifolds

We give an explicit construction of vertex-transitive tight triangulations of $d$-manifolds for $d\geq 2$. More explicitly, for each $d\geq 2$, we construct two $(d^2+5d+5)$-vertex neighborly triangulated $d$-manifolds whose vertex-links are stacked spheres. The only other non-trivial series of such tight triangulated manifolds currently known is the series of non-simply connected triangulated $d$-manifolds with $2d+3$ vertices constructed by Kühnel. The manifolds we construct are strongly minimal. For $d\geq 3$, they are also tight neighborly as defined by Lutz, Sulanke and Swartz. Like Kühnel's complexes, our manifolds are orientable in even dimensions and non-orientable in odd dimensions.
Abelian 1-factorizations of complete multipartite graphs
An automorphism group G of a 1-factorization of the complete multipartite graph $K_{m\times n}$ consists in permutations of the vertices of the graph mapping factors to factors. In this paper, we give a complete answer to the existence or non-existence problem of a 1-factorization of $K_{m\times n}$ admitting an abelian group acting sharply transitively on the vertices of the graph.
Simple, Fast and Deterministic Gossip and Rumor Spreading

We study gossip algorithms for the rumor spreading problem which asks each node to deliver a rumor to all nodes in an unknown network. Gossip algorithms allow nodes only to call one neighbor per round and have recently attracted attention as message efficient, simple and robust solutions to the rumor spreading problem.
Recently, non-uniform random gossip schemes were devised to allow efficient rumor spreading in networks with bottlenecks. In particular, [Censor-Hillel et al., STOC'12] gave an O(log^3 n) algorithm to solve the 1-local broadcast problem in which each node wants to exchange rumors locally with its 1-neighborhood. By repeatedly applying this protocol one can solve the global rumor spreading quickly for all networks with small diameter, independently of the conductance.
This and all prior gossip algorithms for the rumor spreading problem have been inherently randomized in their design and analysis. This resulted in a parallel research direction trying to reduce and determine the amount of randomness needed for efficient rumor spreading. This has been done via lower bounds for restricted models and by designing gossip algorithms with a reduced need for randomness. The general intuition and consensus of these results has been that randomization plays a important role in effectively spreading rumors.
In this paper we improves over this state of the art in several ways by presenting a deterministic gossip algorithm that solves the the k-local broadcast problem in 2(k+log n)log n rounds. Besides being the first efficient deterministic solution to the rumor spreading problem this algorithm is interesting in many aspects: It is simpler, more natural, more robust and faster than its randomized pendant and guarantees success with certainty instead of with high probability. Its analysis is furthermore simple, self-contained and fundamentally different from prior works.
Semidirect sums of matroids

For matroids M and N on disjoint sets S and T, a semidirect sum of M and N is a matroid K on the union of S and T that, like the direct sum and the free product, has the restriction of K to S equal to M and the contraction of K to T equal to N. We abstract a matrix construction to get a general matroid construction: the matroid union of any rank-preserving extension of M on the union of S and T with the direct sum of N and the rank-0 matroid on S is a semidirect sum of M and N. We study principal sums in depth; these are such matroid unions where the extension of M has each element of T added either as a loop or freely on a fixed flat of M. A second construction of semidirect sums, defined by a Higgs lift, also specializes to principal sums. We also explore what can be deduced if M and N, or certain of their semidirect sums, are transversal or fundamental transversal matroids.
The t-tone chromatic number of random graphs

A proper 2-tone $k$-coloring of a graph is a labeling of the vertices with elements from $\binom{[k]}{2}$ such that adjacent vertices receive disjoint labels and vertices distance 2 apart receive distinct labels. The 2-tone chromatic number of a graph $G$, denoted $τ_2(G)$ is the smallest $k$ such that $G$ admits a proper 2-tone $k$ coloring. In this paper, we prove that w.h.p. for $p\ge Cn^{-1/4}\ln^{9/4}n$, $τ_2(G_{n,p})=(2+o(1))χ(G_{n,p})$ where $χ$ represents the ordinary chromatic number. For sparse random graphs with $p=c/n$, $c$ constant, we prove that $τ_2(G_{n,p}) = \lceil{{\sqrt{8Δ+1} +5}/{2}}\rceil$ where $Δ$ represents the maximum degree. For the more general concept of $t$-tone coloring, we achieve similar results.
On the Poincaré series of Kac-Moody Lie algebras
In this paper, we discuss the Poincaré series of Kac-Moody Lie algebras, especially for indefinite type. Firstly, we compute the Poincaré series of certain indefinite Kac-Moody Lie algebras whose Cartan matrices have the same type of $2\times 2$ principal sub-matrices. Secondly, we show that the Poincaré series of Kac-Moody Lie algebras satisfy certain interesting properties. Lastly we give some applications of the Poincaré series to other fields. Particularly we construct some counter examples to a conjecture of Victor Kac\cite{Kac_85} and a conjecture of Chapavalov, Leites and Stekolshchik\cite{CDR_10}.

Let $G$ be a group, $\mathcal{P}_G$ be the family of all subsets of $G$. For a subset $A\subseteq G$, we put $Δ(A)=\{g\in G:|gA\cap A|=\infty\}$. The mapping $Δ:\mathcal{P}_G\rightarrow\mathcal{P}_G$, $A\mapstoΔ(A)$, is called a combinatorial derivation and can be considered as an analogue of the topological derivation $d:\mathcal{P}_X\rightarrow\mathcal{P}_X$, $A\mapsto A^d$, where $X$ is a topological space and $A^d$ is the set of all limit points of $A$.
