Mobius Conjugation and Convolution Formulae
Published in Journal of Combinatorial Theory, Series B Volume 115, November 2015, Pages 117-131 • View Publication • BIB
Let $P$ be a locally finite poset with the interval space $\Int(P)$, and $R$ a ring with identity. We shall introduce the Möbius conjugation $μ^\ast$ sending each function $f:P\to R$ to an incidence function $μ^\ast(f):\Int(P)\to R$ such that $μ^\ast(fg)=μ^\ast(f)\astμ^\ast(g)$. Taking $P$ to be the intersection poset of a hyperplane arrangement $\mathcal{A}$, we shall obtain a convolution identity for the number $r(\mathcal{A})$ of regions and the number $b(\mathcal{A})$ of relatively bounded regions, and a reciprocity theorem of the characteristic polynomial $χ(\mathcal{A},t)$, which also leads to a combinatorial interpretation to the values $|χ(\mathcal{A},-q)|$ for large primes $q$. Moreover, all known convolution identities on Tutte polynomials of matroids will be direct consequences after specializing the poset $P$ and functions $f,g$.

Symmetric and nonsymmetric Hall-Littlewood polynomials of type BC
Published in J. Algebr. Comb. 42 (2015), 331-364 • Search Publication
Koornwinder polynomials are a 6-parameter BC_n-symmetric family of Laurent polynomials indexed by partitions, from which Macdonald polynomials can be recovered in suitable limits of the parameters. As in the Macdonald polynomial case, standard constructions via difference operators do not allow one to directly control these polynomials at q=0. In the first part of this paper, we provide an explicit construction for these polynomials in this limit, using the defining properties of Koornwinder polynomials. Our formula is a first step in developing the analogy between Hall-Littlewood polynomials and Koornwinder polynomials at q=0. Next, we provide an analogous construction for the nonsymmetric Koornwinder polynomials in the same limiting case. The method employed in this paper is a BC-type adaptation of techniques used in an earlier work of the author, which gave a combinatorial method for proving vanishing results of Rains and Vazirani at the Hall-Littlewood level. As a consequence of this work, we obtain direct arguments for the constant term evaluations and norms in both the symmetric and nonsymmetric cases.

The hitting time of rainbow connection number two
Published in Electronic J. Combinatorics 19 (2012), Issue 4, P37 • View Publication • BIB
In a graph $G$ with a given edge colouring, a rainbow path is a path all of whose edges have distinct colours. The minimum number of colours required to colour the edges of $G$ so that every pair of vertices is joined by at least one rainbow path is called the rainbow connection number $rc(G)$ of the graph $G$. For any graph $G$, $rc(G) \ge diam(G)$. We will show that for the Erdős-Rényi random graph $G(n,p)$ close to the diameter 2 threshold, with high probability if $diam(G)=2$ then $rc(G)=2$. In fact, further strengthening this result, we will show that in the random graph process, with high probability the hitting times of diameter 2 and of rainbow connection number 2 coincide.
Partial coloring, vertex decomposability, and sequentially Cohen-Macaulay simplicial complexes
Published • View Publication • BIB
In attempting to understand how combinatorial modifications alter algebraic properties of monomial ideals, several authors have investigated the process of adding "whiskers" to graphs. In this paper, we study a similar construction to build a simplicial complex $Δ_χ$ from a coloring $χ$ of a subset of the vertices of $Δ$, and give necessary and sufficient conditions for this construction to produce vertex decomposable simplicial complexes. We apply this work to strengthen and give new proofs about sequentially Cohen-Macaulay edge ideals of graphs.

Every 4-regular graph is acyclically edge-6-colorable
An acyclic edge coloring of a graph $G$ is a proper edge coloring such that no bichromatic cycles are produced. The acyclic chromatic index $a'(G)$ of $G$ is the smallest integer $k$ such that $G$ has an acyclic edge coloring using $k$ colors. Fiam${\rm \check{c}}$ik (1978) and later Alon, Sudakov and Zaks (2001) conjectured that $a'(G)\le Δ+ 2$ for any simple graph $G$ with maximum degree $Δ$. Basavaraju and Chandran (2009) showed that every graph $G$ with $Δ=4$, which is not 4-regular, satisfies the conjecture. In this paper, we settle the 4-regular case, i.e., we show that every 4-regular graph $G$ has $a'(G)\le 6$.

On the spectral moment of graphs with $k$ cut edges
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $A(G)$ be the adjacency matrix of a graph $G$ with $λ_{1}(G)$, $λ_{2}(G)$, ..., $λ_{n}(G)$ being its eigenvalues in non-increasing order. Call the number $S_k(G):=\sum_{i=1}^{n}λ_{i}^k(G) (k=0,1,...,n-1)$ the $k$th spectral moment of $G$. Let $S(G)=(S_0(G),S_1(G),...,S_{n-1}(G))$ be the sequence of spectral moments of $G$. For two graphs $G_1$ and $G_2$, we have $G_1\prec_sG_2$ if $S_i(G_1)=S_i(G_2) (i=0,1,...,k-1)$ and $S_k(G_1)<S_k(G_2)$ for some $k\in {1,2,...,n-1}$. Denote by $\mathscr{G}_n^k$ the set of connected $n$-vertex graphs with $k$ cut edges. In this paper, we determine the first, the second, the last and the second last graphs, in an $S$-order, among $\mathscr{G}_n^k$, respectively.

The Golod property for products and high symbolic powers of monomial ideals
Published • View Publication • BIB
We show that for any two proper monomial ideals I and J in the polynomial ring S = k[x_1, ..., x_n] the ring S/IJ is Golod. We also show that if I is squarefree then for large enough k the quotient S/I^{(k)} of S by the kth symbolic power of I is Golod. As an application we prove that the multiplication on the cohomology algebra of some classes of moment-angle complexes is trivial.

Symmetric Chain Decompositions of Quotients of Chain Products by Wreath Products
Published • View Publication • BIB
Subgroups of the symmetric group $S_n$ act on powers of chains $C^n$ by permuting coordinates, and induce automorphisms of the ordered sets $C^n$. The quotients defined are candidates for symmetric chain decompositions. We establish this for some families of groups in order to enlarge the collection of subgroups $G$ of the symmetric group $S_n$ for which the quotient $B_n/G$ obtained from the $G$-orbits on the Boolean lattice $B_n$ is a symmetric chain order. The methods are also used to provide an elementary proof that quotients of powers of SCOs by cyclic groups are SCOs.

On partial barycentric subdivision
Published • View Publication • BIB
The lth partial barycentric subdivision is defined for a (d-1)-dimensional simplicial complex Δand studied along with its combinatorial, geometric and algebraic aspects. We analyze the behavior of the f- and h-vector under the lth partial barycentric subdivision extending previous work of Brenti and Welker on the standard barycentric subdivision -- the case l = 1. We discuss and provide properties of the transformation matrices sending the f- and h-vector of Δto the f- and h-vector of its lth partial barycentric subdivision. We conclude with open problems.

Schur polynomials and Weighted Grassmannians
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper, we introduce a family of symmetric polynomials by specializing the factorial Schur polynomials. These polynomials represent the weighted Schubert classes of the cohomology of the weighted Grassmannian introduced by Corti-Reid, and we regard these polynomials as analogue of the Schur polynomials. We show that those twisted Schur polynomials are the characters of certain representations. Thus we give an interpretation of the Schubert structure constants of the weighted Grassmannians as the (rational) multiplicities of tensor products of the representations. Furthermore, we derive two types of determinantal formulas for the weighted Schubert classes, in terms of special weighted Schubert classes, and also in terms of Chern classes of tautological orbi-bundles.

Positivity and Transportation
We prove in this paper that the weighted volume of the set of integral transportation matrices between two integral histograms r and c of equal sum is a positive definite kernel of r and c when the set of considered weights forms a positive definite matrix. The computation of this quantity, despite being the subject of a significant research effort in algebraic statistics, remains an intractable challenge for histograms of even modest dimensions. We propose an alternative kernel which, rather than considering all matrices of the transportation polytope, only focuses on a sub-sample of its vertices known as its Northwestern corner solutions. The resulting kernel is positive definite and can be computed with a number of operations O(R^2d) that grows linearly in the complexity of the dimension d, where R^2, the total amount of sampled vertices, is a parameter that controls the complexity of the kernel.

An entropic partial order on a parabolic quotient of S6
Let m and n be any integers with n>m>=2. Using just the entropy function it is possible to define a partial order on S_mn (the symmetric group on mn letters) modulo a subgroup isomorphic to S_m x S_n. We explore this partial order in the case m=2, n=3, where thanks to the outer automorphism the quotient space is actually isomorphic to a parabolic quotient of S_6. Furthermore we show that in this case it has a fairly simple algebraic description in terms of elements of the group ring.

Unrolling residues to avoid progressions
Published • View Publication • BIB
We consider the problem of coloring $[n]={1,2,...,n}$ with $r$ colors to minimize the number of monochromatic $k$ term arithmetic progressions (or $k$-APs for short). We show how to extend colorings of $\mathbb{Z}_m$ which avoid nontrivial $k$-APs to colorings of $[n]$ by an unrolling process. In particular, by using residues to color $\mathbb{Z}_m$ we produce the best known colorings for minimizing the number of monochromatic $k$-APs for coloring with $r$ colors for several small values of $r$ and $k$.

Quillen model structures on the category of graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
We present different ways of endowing a particular category of graphs with Quillen model structures. We show, among other things, that the core of a graph can be seen as its homotopy type in an appropriate Quillen model structure, and that an infinity of Quillen model structures exist for our particular category of graphs.

A node-capacitated Okamura-Seymour theorem
Published • View Publication • BIB
The classical Okamura-Seymour theorem states that for an edge-capacitated, multi-commodity flow instance in which all terminals lie on a single face of a planar graph, there exists a feasible concurrent flow if and only if the cut conditions are satisfied. Simple examples show that a similar theorem is impossible in the node-capacitated setting. Nevertheless, we prove that an approximate flow/cut theorem does hold: For some universal c > 0, if the node cut conditions are satisfied, then one can simultaneously route a c-fraction of all the demands. This answers an open question of Chekuri and Kawarabayashi. More generally, we show that this holds in the setting of multi-commodity polymatroid networks introduced by Chekuri, et. al. Our approach employs a new type of random metric embedding in order to round the convex programs corresponding to these more general flow problems.

On the spectral moment of trees with given degree sequences
Let $A(G)$ be the adjacency matrix of graph $G$ with eigenvalues $λ_1(G), λ_2(G),..., λ_n(G)$ in non-increasing order. The number $S_k(G):=\sum_{i=1}^{n}λ_i^{k}(G)\, (k=0, 1,..., n-1)$ is called the $k$th spectral moment of $G$. Let $S(G) = (S_0(G), S_1(G),..., S_{n-1}(G))$ be the sequence of spectral moments of $G.$ For two graphs $G_1, G_2$, we have $G_1\prec_{s}G_2$ if for some $k \in \{1,2,3,...,n-1\}$, we have $S_i(G_1) = S_i(G_2)\, ,\, i = 0, 1,..., k-1$ and $S_k(G_1)<S_k(G_2).$ In this paper, the last $n$-vertex tree with a given degree sequence in an $S$-order is determined. Consequently, we also obtain the last trees in an $S$-order in the sets of all trees of order $n$ with the largest degree, the leaves number, the independence number and the matching number, respectively.

Contiguous relations of $_3φ_2$-series
According to Abel's lemma and the method of linear combinations, we establish numerous contiguous relations of $_3φ_2$-series, which can be regarded as q-analogues of the contiguous relations of $_3F_2$-series due to Krattenthaler and Rivoal [12] or Chu and Wang [4].

Nordhaus-Guddam Type Relations of Three Graph Coloring Parameters
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let G be a simple graph. A coloring of vertices of G is called (i) a 2-proper coloring if vertices at distance 2 receive distinct colors; (ii) an injective coloring if vertices possessing a common neighbor receive distinct colors; (iii) a square coloring if vertices at distance at most 2 receive distinct colors. In this paper, we study inequalities of Nordhaus-Guddam type for the 2-proper chromatic number, the injective chromatic number, and the square chromatic number.
Product Dimension of Forests and Bounded Treewidth Graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
The product dimension of a graph G is defined as the minimum natural number l such that G is an induced subgraph of a direct product of l complete graphs. In this paper we study the product dimension of forests, bounded treewidth graphs and k-degenerate graphs. We show that every forest on n vertices has a product dimension at most 1.441logn+3. This improves the best known upper bound of 3logn for the same due to Poljak and Pultr. The technique used in arriving at the above bound is extended and combined with a result on existence of orthogonal Latin squares to show that every graph on n vertices with a treewidth at most t has a product dimension at most (t+2)(logn+1). We also show that every k-degenerate graph on n vertices has a product dimension at most \ceil{8.317klogn}+1. This improves the upper bound of 32klogn for the same by Eaton and Rodl.

Some Results On Point Visibility Graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper, we present three necessary conditions for recognizing point visibility graphs. We show that this recognition problem lies in PSPACE. We state new properties of point visibility graphs along with some known properties that are important in understanding point visibility graphs. For planar point visibility graphs, we present a complete characterization which leads to a linear time recognition and reconstruction algorithm.
