A determinantal approximation is obtained for the permanent of a doubly stochastic matrix. For moderate-deviation matrix sequences, the asymptotic relative error is of order $O(n^{-1})$.
Improved Lower Bounds on the Compatibility of Multi-State Characters

We study a long standing conjecture on the necessary and sufficient conditions for the compatibility of multi-state characters: There exists a function $f(r)$ such that, for any set $C$ of $r$-state characters, $C$ is compatible if and only if every subset of $f(r)$ characters of $C$ is compatible. We show that for every $r \ge 2$, there exists an incompatible set $C$ of $\lfloor\frac{r}{2}\rfloor\cdot\lceil\frac{r}{2}\rceil + 1$ $r$-state characters such that every proper subset of $C$ is compatible. Thus, $f(r) \ge \lfloor\frac{r}{2}\rfloor\cdot\lceil\frac{r}{2}\rceil + 1$ for every $r \ge 2$. This improves the previous lower bound of $f(r) \ge r$ given by Meacham (1983), and generalizes the construction showing that $f(4) \ge 5$ given by Habib and To (2011). We prove our result via a result on quartet compatibility that may be of independent interest: For every integer $n \ge 4$, there exists an incompatible set $Q$ of $\lfloor\frac{n-2}{2}\rfloor\cdot\lceil\frac{n-2}{2}\rceil + 1$ quartets over $n$ labels such that every proper subset of $Q$ is compatible. We contrast this with a result on the compatibility of triplets: For every $n \ge 3$, if $R$ is an incompatible set of more than $n-1$ triplets over $n$ labels, then some proper subset of $R$ is incompatible. We show this upper bound is tight by exhibiting, for every $n \ge 3$, a set of $n-1$ triplets over $n$ taxa such that $R$ is incompatible, but every proper subset of $R$ is compatible.
q-Chebyshev polynomials
In this overview paper a direct approach to q-Chebyshev polynomials and their elementary properties is given. Special emphasis is placed on analogies with the classical case. There are also some connections with q-tangent and q-Genocchi numbers.

We study the following problem: given a real number k and integer d, what is the smallest epsilon such that any fractional (k+epsilon)-precoloring of vertices at pairwise distances at least d of a fractionally k-colorable graph can be extended to a fractional (k+epsilon)-coloring of the whole graph? The exact values of epsilon were known for k=2 and k\ge3 and any d. We determine the exact values of epsilon for k \in (2,3) if d=4, and k \in [2.5,3) if d=6, and give upper bounds for k \in (2,3) if d=5,7, and k \in (2,2.5) if d=6. Surprisingly, epsilon viewed as a function of k is discontinuous for all those values of d.
The Tutte Polynomial of a Morphism of Matroids 6. A Multi-Faceted Counting Formula for Hyperplane Regions and Acyclic Orientations
We show that the 4-variable generating function of certain orientation related parameters of an ordered oriented matroid is the evaluation at (x + u, y+v) of its Tutte polynomial. This evaluation contains as special cases the counting of regions in hyperplane arrangements and of acyclic orientations in graphs. Several new 2-variable expansions of the Tutte polynomial of an oriented matroid follow as corollaries.
This result hold more generally for oriented matroid perspectives, with specific special cases the counting of bounded regions in hyperplane arrangements or of bipolar acyclic orientations in graphs.
In corollary, we obtain expressions for the partial derivatives of the Tutte polynomial as generating functions of the same orientation parameters.

A conjecture of Erdős, Gyárfás, and Pyber says that in any edge-colouring of a complete graph with r colours, it is possible to cover all the vertices with r vertex-disjoint monochromatic cycles. So far, this conjecture has been proven only for r = 2. In this paper we show that in fact this conjecture is false for all r > 2. In contrast to this, we show that in any edge-colouring of a complete graph with three colours, it is possible to cover all the vertices with three vertex-disjoint monochromatic paths, proving a particular case of a conjecture due to Gyárfás. As an intermediate result we show that in any edge-colouring of the complete graph with the colours red and blue, it is possible to cover all the vertices with a red path, and a disjoint blue balanced complete bipartite graph.

Let $γ(C_m\Box C_n)$ be the domination number of the Cartesian product of directed cycles $C_m$ and $C_n$ for $m,n\geq2$. Shaheen [] and Liu and al.[ ], [ ] determined the value of $γ(C_m\Box C_n)$ when $m \leq 6$ and when both $m$ and $n$ $\equiv 0$ $(mod\: 3)$. In this article we give, in general, the value of $γ(C_m\Box C_n)$ when $m\equiv 2$ $(mod\: 3)$ and improve the known lower bound for most of the remaining cases. We also disprove the conjectured formula for the case $m$ $\equiv 0$ $(mod\: 3)$ appearing in \cite{}

We consider rotations on the torus $\mathbb{T}^2$, and we classify them with respect to the complexity functions. In dimension one, a minimal rotation can be coded by a sturmian word. A sturmian word has complexity $n+1$ by the Morse-Hedlund theorem. Here we make a generalization in dimension two.

We prove that every connected graph with $s$ vertices of degree~1 and 3 and $t$ vertices of degree at least~4 has a spanning tree with at least ${1\over 3}t +{1\over 4}s+{3\over 2}$ leaves. We present infinite series of graphs showing that our bound is tight.

Let $S$ be a set of transpositions that generates the symmetric group $S_n$, where $n \ge 3$. The transposition graph $T(S)$ is defined to be the graph with vertex set $\{1,\ldots,n\}$ and with vertices $i$ and $j$ being adjacent in $T(S)$ whenever $(i,j) \in S$. We prove that if the girth of the transposition graph $T(S)$ is at least 5, then the automorphism group of the Cayley graph $\Cay(S_n,S)$ is the semidirect product $R(S_n) \rtimes \Aut(S_n,S)$, where $\Aut(S_n,S)$ is the set of automorphisms of $S_n$ that fixes $S$. This strengthens a result of Feng on transposition graphs that are trees. We also prove that if the transposition graph $T(S)$ is a 4-cycle, then the set of automorphisms of the Cayley graph $\Cay(S_4,S)$ that fixes a vertex and each of its neighbors is isomorphic to the Klein 4-group and hence is nontrivial. We thus identify the existence of 4-cycles in the transposition graph as being an important factor in causing a potentially larger automorphism group of the Cayley graph.
Pavages additifs
The following article is one of introduction to additive frieze patterns, linking the subject to multiplicative frieze patterns. We also add two new theorems about additive frieze patterns (see theorem 2 and 5) and a conjecture about infinite multiplicative frieze patterns. (the parper is in french)
A simple formula for the series of constellations and quasi-constellations with boundaries

We obtain a very simple formula for the generating function of bipartite (resp. quasi-bipartite) planar maps with boundaries (holes) of prescribed lengths, which generalizes certain expressions obtained by Eynard in a book to appear. The formula is derived from a bijection due to Bouttier, Di Francesco and Guitter combined with a process (reminiscent of a construction of Pitman) of aggregating connected components of a forest into a single tree. The formula naturally extends to $p$-constellations and quasi-$p$-constellations with boundaries (the case $p=2$ corresponding to bipartite maps).

We show that in an ordered matroid the partial derivative \partial^{p+q}t/\partialx^p\partialyq of the Tutte polynomial is p!q! times the generating function of activities of subsets with corank p and nullity q. More generally, this property holds for the 3-variable Tutte polynomial of a matroid perspective.

On the number of distinct values of a class of functions with finite domain

By relating the number of images of a function with finite domain to a certain parameter, we obtain both an upper and lower bound for the image set. Even though the arguments are elementary, the bounds are, in some sense, best possible. The upper bound is also connected to triangular numbers, and a slight improvement to this bound could be obtained by resolving a problem on them. In the final section, we consider implications of our bounds in various settings, including finite fields, coding theory and additive combinatorics. In particular, we obtain the first non-trivial upper bound for the image set of a planar function over a finite field; this bound is better than the bound implied by the Dembowski-Ostrom conjecture.
On the number of classes of triangles determined by $N$ points in $\R^2$
Let $P$ be a set of $N$ points in the Euclidean plane, where a positive proportion of points lies off a single straight line. This note points out two facts concerning the number of equivalence classes of triangles that $P$ determines, namely that (i) $P$ determines $Ω(N^2)$ different equivalence classes of congruent triangles, and (ii) $P$ determines $Ω(\frac{N^2}{\log N})$ different equivalence classes of similar triangles. The first fact follows from the recent theorem by Guth-Katz on point-line incidences in $\R^3$. The second one, perhaps not so well known, is due to Solymosi and Tardos.

Given five positive integers $v, m,k,λ$ and $t$ where $v \geq k \geq t$ and $v \geq m \geq t,$ a $t$-$(v,k,m,λ)$ general covering design is a pair $(X,\mathcal{B})$ where $X$ is a set of $v$ elements (called points) and $\mathcal{B}$ a multiset of $k$-subsets of $X$ (called blocks) such that every $m$-subset of $X$ intersects (is covered by) at least $λ$ members of $\mathcal{B}$ in at least $t$ points. In this article we present new constructions for general covering designs and we generalize some others. By means of these constructions we will be able to obtain some new upper bounds on the minimum size of such designs.

The Hobby-Rice Theorem states that, given $n$ functions $f_j$ on ${\mathbb{R}}^N$, there exists a multiplier $h$ such that the integrals of $f_jh$ are all simultaneously zero. This multiplier takes values~$\pm1$ and is discontinuous. We show how to find a multiplier $h=e^{ig}$ that is infinitely differentiable, takes values on the unit circle, and is such that the integrals of $f_jh$ are all zero. We also show the existence of $n$ infinitely differentiable, real functions $g_j$ such that the $n$ functions $f_j e^{ig_j}$ are pairwise orthogonal.
