Improved bounds on the set A(A+1)

For a subset A of a field F, write A(A + 1) for the set {a(b + 1):a,b\in A}. We establish new estimates on the size of A(A+1) in the case where F is either a finite field of prime order, or the real line.
In the finite field case we show that A(A+1) is of cardinality at least C|A|^{57/56-o(1)} for some absolute constant C, so long as |A| < p^{1/2}. In the real case we show that the cardinality is at least C|A|^{24/19-o(1)}. These improve on the previously best-known exponents of 106/105-o(1) and 5/4 respectively.
Relations Between Graphs
Given two graphs G and H, we ask under which conditions there is a relation R that generates the edges of H given the structure of graph G. This construction can be seen as a form of multihomomorphism. It generalizes surjective homomorphisms of graphs and naturally leads to notions of R-retractions, R-cores, and R-cocores of graphs. Both R-cores and R-cocores of graphs are unique up to isomorphism and can be computed in polynomial time.

We characterize f-vectors of sufficiently large three-dimensional flag Gorenstein* complexes, essentially confirming a conjecture of Gal [Discrete Comput. Geom., 34 (2), 269--284, 2005]. In particular, this characterizes f-vectors of large flag triangulations of the 3-sphere. Actually, our main result is more general and describes the structure of closed flag 3-manifolds which have many edges.
Looking at the 1-skeleta of these manifolds we reduce the problem to a certain question in extremal graph theory. We then resolve this question by employing the Supersaturation Theorem of Erdos and Simonovits.
A phase transition in energy-filtered RNA secondary structures

In this paper we study the effect of energy parameters on minimum free energy (mfe) RNA secondary structures. Employing a simplified combinatorial energy model, that is only dependent on the diagram representation and that is not sequence specific, we prove the following dichotomy result. Mfe structures derived via the Turner energy parameters contain only finitely many complex irreducible substructures and just minor parameter changes produce a class of mfe-structures that contain a large number of small irreducibles. We localize the exact point where the distribution of irreducibles experiences this phase transition from a discrete limit to a central limit distribution and subsequently put our result into the context of quantifying the effect of sparsification of the folding of these respective mfe-structures. We show that the sparsification of realistic mfe-structures leads to a constant time and space reduction and that the sparsifcation of the folding of structures with modified parameters leads to a linear time and space reduction. We furthermore identify the limit distribution at the phase transition as a Rayleigh distribution.
Edge Ideals of Weighted Graphs

We study weighted graphs and their "edge ideals" which are ideals in polynomial rings that are defined in terms of the graphs. We provide combinatorial descriptions of m-irreducible decompositions for the edge ideal of a weighted graph in terms of the combinatorics of "weighted vertex covers". We use these, for instance, to say when these ideals are m-unmixed. We explicitly describe which weighted cycles, suspensions, and trees are unmixed and which ones are Cohen-Macaulay, and we prove that all weighted complete graphs are Cohen-Macaulay.

We are interested in overgroups of the automorphism group of the Rado graph. One class of such overgroups is completely understood; this is the class of reducts. In this article we tie recent work on various other natural overgroups, in particular establishing group connections between them and the reducts.
A Partially Ordered Structure and a Generalization of the Canonical Partition for General Graphs with Perfect Matchings

This paper is concerned with structures of general graphs with perfect matchings. We first reveal a partially ordered structure among factor-components of general graphs with perfect matchings. Our second result is a generalization of Kotzig's canonical partition to a decomposition of general graphs with perfect matchings. It contains a short proof for the theorem of the canonical partition. These results give decompositions which are canonical, that is, unique to given graphs. We also show that there are correlations between these two and that these can be computed in polynomial time.

Lovász gave a short proof of Brooks' theorem by coloring greedily in a good order. We give a different short proof by reducing to the cubic case. Then we show how to extend the result to (online) list coloring via the Kernel Lemma.
On the 1-2-3-conjecture

A k-edge-weighting of a graph G is a function w: E(G)->{1,2,...,k}. An edge-weighting naturally induces a vertex coloring c, where for every vertex v in V(G), c(v) is sum of weights of the edges that are adjacent to vertex v. If the induced coloring c is a proper vertex coloring, then w is called a vertex-coloring k-edge weighting (VCk-EW). Karonski et al. (J. Combin. Theory Ser. B 91 (2004) 151-157) conjectured that every graph admits a VC3-EW. This conjecture is known as 1-2-3-conjecture. In this paper, frst, we study the vertex-coloring edge-weighting of the cartesian product of graphs. Among some results, we prove that the 1-2-3-conjecture holds for some infinite classes of graphs. Moreover, we explore some properties of a graph to admit a VC2-EW

Let Q be a finite quiver without oriented cycles, and let k be an algebraically closed field. The main result in this paper is that there is a natural bijection between the elements in the associated Coxeter group W_Q and the cofinite additive quotient-closed subcategories of the category of finite dimensional right modules over kQ. We prove this correspondence by linking these subcategories to certain ideals in the preprojective algebra associated to Q, which are also indexed by elements of W_Q.
Non-D-finite excursions in the quarter plane

The number of excursions (finite paths starting and ending at the origin) having a given number of steps and obeying various geometric constraints is a classical topic of combinatorics and probability theory. We prove that the sequence $(e^{\mathfrak{S}}_n)_{n\geq 0}$ of numbers of excursions in the quarter plane corresponding to a nonsingular step set $\mathfrak{S} \subseteq \{0,\pm 1 \}^2$ with infinite group does not satisfy any nontrivial linear recurrence with polynomial coefficients. Accordingly, in those cases, the trivariate generating function of the numbers of walks with given length and prescribed ending point is not D-finite. Moreover, we display the asymptotics of $e^{\mathfrak{S}}_n$.
Planar Difference Functions

In 1980 Alltop produced a family of cubic phase sequences that nearly meet the Welch bound for maximum non-peak correlation magnitude. This family of sequences were shown by Wooters and Fields to be useful for quantum state tomography. Alltop's construction used a function that is not planar, but whose difference function is planar. In this paper we show that Alltop type functions cannot exist in fields of characteristic 3 and that for a known class of planar functions, $x^3$ is the only Alltop type function.
Some Combinatorial Operators in Language Theory
Multitildes are regular operators that were introduced by Caron et al. in order to increase the number of Glushkov automata. In this paper, we study the family of the multitilde operators from an algebraic point of view using the notion of operad. This leads to a combinatorial description of already known results as well as new results on compositions, actions and enumerations.
The entropy of random-free graphons and properties

Every graphon defines a random graph on any given number $n$ of vertices. It was known that the graphon is random-free if and only if the entropy of this random graph is subquadratic. We prove that for random-free graphons, this entropy can grow as fast as any subquadratic function. However, if the graphon belongs to the closure of a random-free graph property, then the entropy is $O(n \log n)$. We also give a simple construction of a non-stepfunction random-free graphon for which this entropy is linear, refuting a conjecture of Janson.
On the evolution of random graphs on spaces of negative curvature
In this work, we study a family of random geometric graphs on hyperbolic spaces. In this setting, N points are chosen randomly on a hyperbolic space and any two of them are joined by an edge with probability that depends on their hyperbolic distance, independently of every other pair. In particular, when the positions of the points have been fixed, the distribution over the set of graphs on these points is the Boltzmann distribution, where the Hamiltonian is given by the sum of weighted indicator functions for each pair of points, with the weight being proportional to a real parameter β>0 (interpreted as the inverse temperature) as well as to the hyperbolic distance between the corresponding points. This class of random graphs was introduced by Krioukov et al. We provide a rigorous analysis of aspects of this model and its dependence on the parameter β, verifying some of their observations. We show that a phase transition occurs around β=1. More specifically, we show that when β> 1 the degree of a typical vertex is bounded in probability (in fact it follows a distribution which for large values exhibits a power-law tail whose exponent depends only on the curvature of the space), whereas for β<1 the degree is a random variable whose expected value grows polynomially in N. When β= 1, we establish logarithmic growth.
For the case β> 1, we establish a connection with a class of inhomogeneous random graphs known as the Chung-Lu model. Assume that we use the Poincaré disc representation of a hyperbolic space. If we condition on the distance of each one of the points from the origin, then the probability that two given points are adjacent is expressed through the kernel of this inhomogeneous random graph.

We give an easy diagrammatical description of the parabolic Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials for the Weyl group $W_n$ of type $D_n$ with parabolic subgroup of type $A_n$ and consequently an explicit counting formula for the dimension of the morphism spaces between indecomposable projective objects in the corresponding category $Ø_0^\p$. As a byproduct we categorify irreducible $W_n$-modules corresponding to pairs of one-line partitions. Finally we indicate the motivation for introducing the combinatorics by connections to Springer theory, the category of perverse sheaves on isotropic Grassmannians and to Brauer algebras which will be treated in \cite{ES}.
Combinatorics of generalized Bethe equations

A generalization of the Bethe ansatz equations is studied, where a scalar two-particle S-matrix has several zeroes and poles in the complex plane, as opposed to the ordinary single pole/zero case. For the repulsive case (no complex roots), the main result is the enumeration of all distinct solutions to the Bethe equations in terms of the Fuss-Catalan numbers. Two new combinatorial interpretations of the Fuss-Catalan and related numbers are obtained. On the one hand, they count regular orbits of the permutation group in certain factor modules over Z^M, and on the other hand, they count integer points in certain M-dimensional polytopes.
Generalized preferential attachment: tunable power-law degree distribution and clustering coefficient

We propose a wide class of preferential attachment models of random graphs, generalizing previous approaches. Graphs described by these models obey the power-law degree distribution, with the exponent that can be controlled in the models. Moreover, clustering coefficient of these graphs can also be controlled. We propose a concrete flexible model from our class and provide an efficient algorithm for generating graphs in this model. All our theoretical results are demonstrated in practice on examples of graphs obtained using this algorithm. Moreover, observations of generated graphs lead to future questions and hypotheses not yet justified by theory.
Quasirandom permutations are characterized by 4-point densities
For permutations P and T of lengths |P|\le|T|, let t(P,T) be the probability that the restriction of T to a random |P|-point set is (order) isomorphic to P. We show that every sequence \{T_j\} of permutations such that |T_j|\to\infty and t(P,T_j)\to 1/4! for every 4-point permutation P is quasirandom (that is, t(P,T_j)\to 1/|P|! for every P). This answers a question posed by Graham.
