On the number of permutations with bounded run lengths
In this work we obtain recurrent formulae for the number of permutations with either increasing or monotonic (i.e., both increasing and decreasing) runs of bounded length. Our formulae allow one to efficiently compute the number of such permutations. In particular, we use the formulae to find and correct a few miscalculations in the classic 1966 book by David, Kendall, and Barton. We further use our formulae to derive differential equations for the corresponding exponential generating functions. In the case of increasing runs, we solve these equations and obtain closed-form expressions for the generating functions.

The maximal energy of classes of integral circulant graphs
Published in Discrete Applied Mathematics, Vol. 160 (2012), pp. 2015-2029 • View Publication • BIB
The energy of a graph is the sum of the moduli of the eigenvalues of its adjacency matrix. We study the energy of integral circulant graphs, also called gcd graphs, which can be characterized by their vertex count $n$ and a set $\cal D$ of divisors of $n$ in such a way that they have vertex set $\mathbb{Z}_n$ and edge set ${{a,b}: a,b\in\mathbb{Z}_n, \gcd(a-b,n)\in {\cal D}}$. For a fixed prime power $n=p^s$ and a fixed divisor set size $|{\cal D}| =r$, we analyze the maximal energy among all matching integral circulant graphs. Let $p^{a_1} < p^{a_2} < ... < p^{a_r}$ be the elements of ${\cal D}$. It turns out that the differences $d_i=a_{i+1}-a_{i}$ between the exponents of an energy maximal divisor set must satisfy certain balance conditions: (i) either all $d_i$ equal $q:=\frac{s-1}{r-1}$, or at most the two differences $[q]$ and $[q+1]$ may occur; %(for a certain $d$ depending on $r$ and $s$) (ii) there are rules governing the sequence $d_1,...,d_{r-1}$ of consecutive differences. For particular choices of $s$ and $r$ these conditions already guarantee maximal energy and its value can be computed explicitly.

A note on the multiplicative structure of an additively shifted product set, AA+1
Published • View Publication • BIB
We consider the multiplicative structure of sets of the form AA+1, where where A is a large, finite set of real numbers. In particular, we show that the additively shifted product set, AA+1 must have a large part outside of any generalized geometric progression of comparable length. We prove an analogous result in finite fields as well.

Lower Bound For The Rank Of 2-Dimensional Generic Rigidity Matroid For Regular Graphs Of Degree Four And Five
In this note we prove a lower bound for the rank of 2-dimensional generic rigidity matroid for regular graphs of degree four and five. Also, we give examples to show the order of the bound we give is sharp.

On Murty-Simon Conjecture
A graph is diameter two edge-critical if its diameter is two and the deletion of any edge increases the diameter. Murty and Simon conjectured that the number of edges in a diameter two edge-critical graph on $n$ vertices is at most $\lfloor \frac{n^{2}}{4} \rfloor$ and the extremal graph is the complete bipartite graph $K_{\lfloor \frac{n}{2} \rfloor, \lceil \frac{n}{2} \rceil}$. In the series papers [8-10], the Murty-Simon Conjecture stated by Haynes et al is not the original conjecture, indeed, it is only for the diameter two edge-critical graphs of even order. Haynes et al proved the conjecture for the graphs whose complements have diameter three but only with even vertices. In this paper, we prove the Murty-Simon Conjecture for the graphs whose complements have diameter three, not only with even vertices but also odd ones.

Improper choosability and Property B
Published in J. Graph Theory 73 (2013), 342-353 • View Publication • BIB
A fundamental connection between list vertex colourings of graphs and Property B (also known as hypergraph 2-colourability) was already known to Erdős, Rubin and Taylor. In this article, we draw similar connections for improper list colourings. This extends results of Kostochka, Alon, and Král' and Sgall for, respectively, multipartite graphs, graphs of large minimum degree, and list assignments with bounded list union.

Parking Structures: Fuss Analogs
Published • View Publication • BIB
For any irreducible real reflection group $W$ with Coxeter number $h$, Armstrong, Reiner, and the author introduced a pair of $W \times \ZZ_h$-modules which deserve to be called {\sf $W$-parking spaces} which generalize the type A notion of parking functions and conjectured a relationship between them. In this paper we give a Fuss analog of their constructions. For a Fuss parameter $k \geq 1$, we define a pair of $W \times \ZZ_{kh}$-modules which deserve to be called {\sf $k$-$W$-parking spaces} and conjecture a relationship between them. We prove the weakest version of our conjectures for each of the infinite families ABCDI of finite reflection groups, together with proofs of stronger versions in special cases. Whenever our weakest conjecture holds for $W$, we have the following corollaries. First, there is a simple formula for the character of either $k$-$W$-parking space. Second, we recover a cyclic sieving result due to Krattenthaler and Müller which gives the cycle structure of a generalized rotation action on $k$-$W$-noncrossing partitions. Finally, when $W$ is crystallographic, the restriction of either $k$-$W$-parking space to $W$ isomorphic to the action of $W$ on the finite torus $Q / (kh+1)Q$, where $Q$ is the root lattice.

A generalization of Opsut's lower bounds for the competition number of a graph
Published in Graphs and Combinatorics 29 (2013) 1543-1547 • View Publication • BIB
The notion of a competition graph was introduced by J. E. Cohen in 1968. The competition graph C(D) of a digraph $D$ is a (simple undirected) graph which has the same vertex set as D and has an edge between two distinct vertices x and y if and only if there exists a vertex v in D such that (x,v) and (y,v) are arcs of D. For any graph G, G together with sufficiently many isolated vertices is the competition graph of some acyclic digraph. In 1978, F. S. Roberts defined the competition number k(G) of a graph G as the minimum number of such isolated vertices. In general, it is hard to compute the competition number k(G) for a graph G and it has been one of the important research problems in the study of competition graphs to characterize a graph by its competition number. In 1982, R. J. Opsut gave two lower bounds for the competition number of a graph. In this paper, we give a generalization of these two lower bounds for the competition number of a graph.

Two truncated identities of Gauss
Published in Journal of Combinatorial Theory, Series A 120 (2013) 700-707 • View Publication • BIB
Two new expansions for partial sums of Gauss' triangular and square numbers series are given. As a consequence, we derive a family of inequalities for the overpartition function $\bar{p}(n)$ and for the partition function $p_1(n)$ counting the partitions of $n$ with distinct odd parts. Some further inequalities for variations of partition function are proposed as conjectures.

Asymptotics of the Upper Matching Conjecture
Published • View Publication • BIB
We give upper bounds for the number $Φ_\ell(G)$ of matchings of size $\ell$ in (i) bipartite graphs $G=(X\cup Y, E)$ with specified degrees $d_x$ ($x\in X$), and (ii) general graphs $G=(V,E)$ with all degrees specified. In particular, for $d$-regular, $N$-vertex graphs, our bound is best possible up to an error factor of the form $\exp[o_d(1)N]$, where $o_d(1) \rightarrow 0$ as $d \rightarrow \infty$. This represents the best progress to date on the "Upper Matching Conjecture" of Friedland, Krop, Lundow and Markström. Some further possibilities are also suggested.

Limits of local-global convergent graph sequences
Published • View Publication • BIB
The colored neighborhood metric for sparse graphs was introduced by Bollobás and Riordan. The corresponding convergence notion refines a convergence notion introduced by Benjamini and Schramm. We prove that even in this refined sense, the limit of a convergent graph sequence (with uniformly bounded degree) can be represented by a graphing. We study various topics related to this convergence notion such as: Bernoulli graphings, factor of i.i.d. processes and hyperfiniteness.

Matchings in Random Biregular Bipartite Graphs
Published in Electron. J. Combin. 20 (1), 2013, P60 • View Publication • BIB
We study the existence of perfect matchings in suitably chosen induced subgraphs of random biregular bipartite graphs. We prove a result similar to a classical theorem of Erdos and Renyi about perfect matchings in random bipartite graphs. We also present an application to commutative graphs, a class of graphs that are featured in additive number theory.

Edge Decompositions of Hypercubes by Paths and by Cycles
Published • View Publication • BIB
If $H$ is (or is isomorphic to) a subgraph of $G$, $H$ is said to {\it divide} $G$ if there is an edge-decomposition of $G$ by copies of $E(H)$, the edge set of $H$. A more restrictive version of this is when there is a subgroup ${\cal H}$ of {\rm Aut} $(G)$, the automorphism group of $G$, such that the copies of $E(H)$ are the translates of $E(H)$ by the elements of ${\cal H}$. In a paper by the second author, this situation was described by saying that $H$, or more precisely $E(H)$, is a {\it fundamental} set for $G$. Many authors have studied the notion of divisibility for various graphs, and in particular for various subgraphs of hypercubes, such as paths, trees, and cycles. We continue such a study in this paper; both for divisibilty, and, when possible, for fundamental sets. The final section of the paper lists our main results.

Six combinatorial clases of maximal convex tropical polyhedra
In this paper we bring together tropical linear algebra and convex 3-dimensional bodies. We show how certain convex 3-dimensional bodies having 20 vertices and 12 facets can be encoded in a $4\times 4$ integer zero-diagonal matrix $A$. A tropical tetrahedron is the set of points in $\R^3$ tropically spanned by four given tropically non-coplanar points. It is a near-miss Johnson solid. The coordinates of the points are arranged as the columns of a $4\times 4$ real matrix $A$ and the tetrahedron is denoted $\spann(A)$. We study tropical tetrahedra which are convex and maximal, computing the extremals of $\spann(A)$ and the length (tropical or Euclidean) of its edges. Then, we classify convex maximal tropical tetrahedra, combinatorially. There are six classes, up to symmetry and chirality. Only one class contains symmetric solids and only one contains chiral ones. In the way, we show that the combinatorial type of the regular dodecahedron does not occur here. We also prove that convex maximal tropical tetrahedra are not vertex-transitive, in general. We give families of examples, circulant matrices providing examples for two classes. A crucial role is played by the $2\times 2$ minors of $A$.

The distance-t chromatic index of graphs
Published in Combin. Probab. Comput. 23(1): 90-101, 2014 • View Publication • BIB
We consider two graph colouring problems in which edges at distance at most $t$ are given distinct colours, for some fixed positive integer $t$. We obtain two upper bounds for the distance-$t$ chromatic index, the least number of colours necessary for such a colouring. One is a bound of $(2-\eps)Δ^t$ for graphs of maximum degree at most $Δ$, where $\eps$ is some absolute positive constant independent of $t$. The other is a bound of $O(Δ^t/\log Δ)$ (as $Δ\to\infty$) for graphs of maximum degree at most $Δ$ and girth at least $2t+1$. The first bound is an analogue of Molloy and Reed's bound on the strong chromatic index. The second bound is tight up to a constant multiplicative factor, as certified by a class of graphs of girth at least $g$, for every fixed $g \ge 3$, of arbitrarily large maximum degree $Δ$, with distance-$t$ chromatic index at least $Ω(Δ^t/\log Δ)$.

Partitions and compositions over finite fields
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper we find exact formulas for the numbers of partitions and compositions of an element into $m$ parts over a finite field, i.e. we find the number of nonzero solutions of the equation $x_1+x_2+...+x_m=z$ over a finite field when the order does not matter and when it does, respectively. We also give an application of our results in the study of polynomials of prescribed ranges over finite fields.

New characterisations of the Nordstrom-Robinson codes
Published • View Publication • BIB
In his doctoral thesis, Snover proved that any binary $(m,256,δ)$ code is equivalent to the Nordstrom-Robinson code or the punctured Nordstrom-Robinson code for $(m,δ)=(16,6)$ or $(15,5)$ respectively. We prove that these codes are also characterised as \emph{completely regular} binary codes with $(m,δ)=(16,6)$ or $(15,5)$, and moreover, that they are \emph{completely transitive}. Also, it is known that completely transitive codes are necessarily completely regular, but whether the converse holds has up to now been an open question. We answer this by proving that certain completely regular codes are not completely transitive, namely, the (Punctured) Preparata codes other than the (Punctured) Nordstrom-Robinson code.

The time of bootstrap percolation for dense initial sets
In r-neighbour bootstrap percolation on the vertex set of a graph G, vertices are initially infected independently with some probability p. At each time step, the infected set expands by infecting all uninfected vertices that have at least r infected neighbours. We study the distribution of the time t at which all vertices become infected. Given t = t(n) = o(log n/log log n), we prove a sharp threshold result for the probability that percolation occurs by time t in d-neighbour bootstrap percolation on the d-dimensional discrete torus T_n^d. Moreover, we show that for certain ranges of p = p(n), the time at which percolation occurs is concentrated either on a single value or on two consecutive values. We also prove corresponding results for the modified d-neighbour rule.
