Dirac's theorem for random graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
A classical theorem of Dirac from 1952 asserts that every graph on $n$ vertices with minimum degree at least $\lceil n/2 \rceil$ is Hamiltonian. In this paper we extend this result to random graphs. Motivated by the study of resilience of random graph properties we prove that if $p \gg \log n /n$, then a.a.s. every subgraph of $G(n,p)$ with minimum degree at least $(1/2+o(1))np$ is Hamiltonian. Our result improves on previously known bounds, and answers an open problem of Sudakov and Vu. Both, the range of edge probability $p$ and the value of the constant 1/2 are asymptotically best possible.

Generic rigidity of frameworks with orientation-preserving crystallographic symmetry
We extend our generic rigidity theory for periodic frameworks in the plane to frameworks with a broader class of crystallographic symmetry. Along the way we introduce a new class of combinatorial matroids and associated linear representation results that may be interesting in their own right. The same techniques immediately yield a Maxwell-Laman-type combinatorial characterization for frameworks embedded in 2-dimensional cones that arise as quotients of the plane by a finite order rotation.
Rainbow Matchings of size δ(G) in Properly Edge-colored Graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
A {\it rainbow matching} in an edge-colored graph is a matching in which all the edges have distinct colors. Wang asked if there is a function f(δ) such that a properly edge-colored graph G with minimum degree δand order at least f(δ) must have a rainbow matching of size δ. We answer this question in the affirmative; f(δ) = 6.5δsuffices. Furthermore, the proof provides a O(δ(G)|V(G)|^2)-time algorithm that generates such a matching.

Lattice Green's Functions of the Higher-Dimensional Face-Centered Cubic Lattices
Published in J. Phys. A: Math. Theor. 46 (2013) 125005 • View Publication • BIB
We study the face-centered cubic lattice (fcc) in up to six dimensions. In particular, we are concerned with lattice Green's functions (LGF) and return probabilities. Computer algebra techniques, such as the method of creative telescoping, are used for deriving an ODE for a given LGF. For the four- and five-dimensional fcc lattices, we give rigorous proofs of the ODEs that were conjectured by Guttmann and Broadhurst. Additionally, we find the ODE of the LGF of the six-dimensional fcc lattice, a result that was not believed to be achievable with current computer hardware.

A new short proof of the EKR theorem
Published • View Publication • BIB
A family F is intersecting if any two members have a nonempty intersection. Erdos, Ko, and Rado showed that |F|\leq {n-1\choose k-1} holds for an intersecting family of k-subsets of [n]:={1,2,3,...,n}, n\geq 2k. For n> 2k the only extremal family consists of all k-subsets containing a fixed element. Here a new proof is presented. It is even shorter than the classical proof of Katona using cyclic permutations, or the one found by Daykin applying the Kruskal-Katona theorem.

Galkin Quandles, Pointed Abelian Groups, and Sequence $A000712$
Published • View Publication • BIB
For each pointed abelian group $(A,c)$, there is an associated {\em Galkin quandle} $G(A,c)$ which is an algebraic structure defined on $\Bbb Z_3\times A$ that can be used to construct knot invariants. It is known that two finite Galkin quandles are isomorphic if and only if their associated pointed abelian groups are isomorphic. In this paper we classify all finite pointed abelian groups. We show that the number of nonisomorphic pointed abelian groups of order $q^n$ ($q$ prime) is $\sum_{0\le m\le n}p(m)p(n-m)$, where $p(m)$ is the number of partitions of integer $m$.

Staircase skew Schur functions are Schur P-positive
Published • View Publication • BIB
We prove Stanley's conjecture that, if delta_n is the staircase shape, then the skew Schur functions s_{delta_n / mu} are non-negative sums of Schur P-functions. We prove that the coefficients in this sum count certain fillings of shifted shapes. In particular, for the skew Schur function s_{delta_n / delta_{n-2}}, we discuss connections with Eulerian numbers and alternating permutations.

Quantum gravity and inventory accumulation
Published • View Publication • BIB
We begin by studying inventory accumulation at a LIFO (last-in-first-out) retailer with two products. In the simplest version, the following occur with equal probability at each time step: first product ordered, first product produced, second product ordered, second product produced. The inventory thus evolves as a simple random walk on Z^2. In more interesting versions, a p fraction of customers orders the "freshest available" product regardless of type. We show that the corresponding random walks scale to Brownian motions with diffusion matrices depending on p. We then turn our attention to the critical Fortuin-Kastelyn random planar map model, which gives, for each q>0, a probability measure on random (discretized) two-dimensional surfaces decorated by loops, related to the q-state Potts model. A longstanding open problem is to show that as the discretization gets finer, the surfaces converge in law to a limiting (loop-decorated) random surface. The limit is expected to be a Liouville quantum gravity surface decorated by a conformal loop ensemble, with parameters depending on q. Thanks to a bijection between decorated planar maps and inventory trajectories (closely related to bijections of Bernardi and Mullin), our results about the latter imply convergence of the former in a particular topology. A phase transition occurs at p = 1/2, q=4.

Strongly symmetric smooth toric varieties
Published in Kyoto J. Math. 52, no. 3 (2012), 597-620 • View Publication • BIB
We investigate toric varieties defined by arrangements of hyperplanes and call them strongly symmetric. The smoothness of such a toric variety translates to the fact that the arrangement is crystallographic. As a result, we obtain a complete classification of this class of toric varieties. Further, we show that these varieties are projective and describe associated toric arrangements in these varieties.
Congruences arising from Apéry-type series for zeta values
Published in Adv. in Appl. Math. 49 (2012), no. 3-5, 218-238 • View Publication • BIB
Recently, R. Tauraso established finite $p$-analogues of famous Apéry series for $ζ(2)$ and $ζ(3).$ In this paper, we present several congruences for finite central binomial sums arising from the truncation of Apéry-type series for $ζ(4)$ and $ζ(5).$ We also prove a $p$-analogue of Zeilberger's series for $ζ(2)$ confirming a conjecture of Z. Triangulations of Cayley and Tutte polytopes
Published • View Publication • BIB
Cayley polytopes were defined recently as convex hulls of Cayley compositions introduced by Cayley in 1857. In this paper we resolve Braun's conjecture, which expresses the volume of Cayley polytopes in terms of the number of connected graphs. We extend this result to two one-variable deformations of Cayley polytopes (which we call t-Cayley and t-Gayley polytopes), and to the most general two-variable deformations, which we call Tutte polytopes. The volume of the latter is given via an evaluation of the Tutte polynomial of the complete graph. Our approach is based on an explicit triangulation of the Cayley and Tutte polytope. We prove that simplices in the triangulations correspond to labeled trees. The heart of the proof is a direct bijection based on the neighbors-first search graph traversal algorithm.

Conditions to Extend Partial Latin Rectangles
In 1974 Allan Cruse provided necessary and sufficient conditions to extend an $r\times s$ partial latin rectangle consisting of $t$ distinct symbols to a latin square of order $n$. Here we provide some generalizations and consequences of this result. Our results are obtained via an alternative proof of Cruse's theorem.

A question of Sárkozy and Sós on representation functions] {A question of Sárkozy and Sós on representation functions
For $m\geq 1$, let $0<b_0<b_1<...<b_m$ and $\ e_0,e_1,...,e_m>0$ be fixed positive integers. Assume there exists a prime $p$ and an integer $t>0$ such that $p^t\mid b_0$, but $p^t\nmid b_{i}\ {\rm for}\ 1\leq i\leq m$. Then, we prove that there is no infinite subset $\mathcal A$ of positive integers, such that the number of solutions of the following equation $$n=b_0(a_{0,1}+...+a_{0,e_0})+...+b_m(a_{m,1}+...+a_{m,r_m}),\ a_{i,j}\in \mathcal A$$ is constant for $n$ large enough. This result generalizes the recent result of Cilleruelo and Rué for bilinear case, and answers a question posed by Sárkozy and Sós.

Jack vertex operators and realization of Jack functions
Published in J. Algebr. Comb. 39 (2014), 53--74 • View Publication • BIB
We give an iterative method to realize general Jack functions from Jack functions of rectangular shapes. We first show some cases of Stanley's conjecture on positivity of the Littlewood-Richardson coefficients, and then use this method to give a new realization of Jack functions. We also show in general that vectors of products of Jack vertex operators form a basis of symmetric functions. In particular this gives a new proof of linear independence for the rectangular and marked rectangular Jack vertex operators. Thirdly a generalized Frobenius formula for Jack functions was given and was used to give new evaluation of Dyson integrals and even powers of Vandermonde determinant.

A lexicographic shellability characterization of geometric lattices
Published • View Publication • BIB
Geometric lattices are characterized in this paper as those finite, atomic lattices such that every atom ordering induces a lexicographic shelling given by an edge labeling known as a minimal labeling. Equivalently, geometric lattices are shown to be exactly those finite lattices such that every ordering on the join-irreducibles induces a lexicographic shelling. This new characterization fits into a similar paradigm as McNamara's characterization of supersolvable lattices as those lattices admitting a different type of lexicographic shelling, namely one in which each maximal chain is labeled with a permutation of {1,...,n}.

Degree-equipartite graphs
Published in Discrete Math., 311 (2011) 888--891 • View Publication • BIB
A graph $G$ of order $2n$ is called degree-equipartite if for every $n$-element set $A\subseteq V(G)$, the degree sequences of the induced subgraphs $G[A]$ and $G[V(G)\setminus A]$ are the same. In this paper, we characterize all degree-equipartite graphs. This answers Problem 1 in the paper by Grünbaum et al [B. Grünbaum, T. Kaiser, D. Král, and M. Rosenfeld, Equipartite graphs, {\it Israel J. Math.} {\bf 168} (2008), 431-444].

Multivariate Bernoulli and Euler polynomials via Lévy processes
Published • View Publication • BIB
By a symbolic method, we introduce multivariate Bernoulli and Euler polynomials as powers of polynomials whose coefficients involve multivariate Lévy processes. Many properties of these polynomials are stated straightforwardly thanks to this representation, which could be easily implemented in any symbolic manipulation system. A very simple relation between these two families of multivariate polynomials is provided.
Colouring Edges with many Colours in Cycles
The arboricity of a graph G is the minimum number of colours needed to colour the edges of G so that every cycle gets at least two colours. Given a positive integer p, we define the generalized p-arboricity Arb_p(G) of a graph G as the minimum number of colours needed to colour the edges of a multigraph G in such a way that every cycle C gets at least min(|C|; p + 1) colours. In the particular case where G has girth at least p + 1, Arb_p(G) is the minimum size of a partition of the edge set of G such that the union of any p parts induce a forest. If we require further that the edge colouring be proper, i.e., adjacent edges receive distinct colours, then the minimum number of colours needed is the generalized p-acyclic edge chromatic number of G. In this paper, we relate the generalized p-acyclic edge chromatic numbers and the generalized p-arboricities of a graph G to the density of the multigraphs having a shallow subdivision as a subgraph of G.

Rectangularity
We introduce a condition on arrays in some way maximally distinct from Latin square condition, as well as some other conditions on algebras, graphs and $0,1$-matrices. We show that these are essentially the same structures, generalising a similar collection of models presented by Knuth in 1970. We find ways in which these structures can be made more specific, relating to existing investigations, then show that they are also extremely general; the groupoids satisfy no nontrivial equations. Some construction methods are presented and some conjectures made as to how certain structures are preserved by these constructions. Finally we investigate to what degree partial arrays satisfying our conditions and partial Latin squares overlap.
