Cycle switching in Steiner triple systems of order 19
Published • View PublicationBIB
Cycle switching is a particular form of transformation applied to isomorphism classes of a Steiner triple system of a given order $v$ (an $STS(v)$), yielding another $STS(v)$. This relationship may be represented by an undirected graph. An $STS(v)$ admits cycles of lengths $4,6,\ldots,v-7$ and $v-3$. In the particular case of $v=19$, it is known that the full switching graph, allowing switching of cycles of any length, is connected. We show that if we restrict switching to only one of the possible cycle lengths, in all cases the switching graph is disconnected (even if we ignore those $STS(19)$s which have no cycle of the given length). Moreover, in a number of cases we find intriguing connected components in the switching graphs which exhibit unexpected symmetries. Our method utilises an algorithm for determining connected components in a very large implicitly defined graph which is more efficient than previous approaches, avoiding the necessity of computing canonical labellings for a large proportion of the systems.

The number of cliques in hypergraphs with forbidden subgraphs
Published in Discrete Mathematics 348 (2025), Paper No. 114415, 7pp • View PublicationBIB
We study the maximum number of $r$-vertex cliques in $(r-1)$-uniform hypergraphs not containing complete $r$-partite hypergraphs $K_r^{(r-1)}(a_1, \dots, a_r)$. By using the hypergraph removal lemma, we show that this maximum is $o( n^{r - 1/(a_1 \cdots a_{r-1})} )$. This immediately implies the corresponding results of Mubayi and Mukherjee and of Balogh, Jiang, and Luo for graphs. We also provide a lower bound by using hypergraph Turán numbers.
New lower bound on ball packing density in high-dimensional hyperbolic spaces
We present a new lower bound on the Bowen-Radin maximal density of radius-R ball packings in the m-dimensional hyperbolic space, improving on the basic covering bound by factor Ω(m(R+\ln m)) as m tends to infinity. This is done by applying the recent theorem of Campos, Jenssen, Michelen and Sahasrabudhe on independent sets in graphs with sparse neighbourhoods.

An almost complete $t$-intersection theorem for permutations
For any $ε>0$ and $n>(1+ε)t$, $n>n_0(ε)$ we determine the size of the largest $t$-intersecting family of permutations, as well as give a sharp stability result. This resolves a conjecture of Ellis, Friedgut and Pilpel (2011) and shows the validity of conjectures of Frankl and Deza (1977) and Cameron (1988) for $n>(1+ε)t$. We note that, for this range of parameters, the extremal examples are not necessarily trivial, and that our statement is analogous to the celebrated Ahlswede-Khachatrian theorem. The proof is based on the refinement of the method of spread approximations, recently introduced by Kupavskii and Zakharov (2022).
On the Gonality of Ferrers Rook Graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
A Ferrers rook graph is a graph whose vertices correspond to the dots in a Ferrers diagram, and where two vertices are adjacent if they are in the same row or the same column. We propose a conjectural formula for the gonality of Ferrers rook graphs, and prove this conjecture for a few infinite families of Ferrers diagrams. We also prove the conjecture for all Ferrers diagrams $F$ with $|F| \leq 8$.

Rowmotion on the chain of V's poset and whirling dynamics
Published • View PublicationBIB
Given a finite poset $P$, we study the _whirling_ action on vertex-labelings of $P$ with the elements $\{0,1,2,\dotsc ,k\}$. When such labelings are (weakly) order-reversing, we call them $k$-bounded $P$-partitions. We give a general equivariant bijection between $k$-bounded $P$-partitions and order ideals of the poset $P\times [k]$ which conveys whirling to the well-studied rowmotion operator. As an application, we derive periodicity and homomesy results for rowmotion acting on the chain of V's poset $V \times [k]$. We are able to generalize some of these results to the more complicated dynamics of rowmotion on $C_{n}\times [k]$, where $C_{n}$ is the claw poset with $n$ unrelated elements each covering $\widehat{0}$.

GPU-accelerated factorization sets in numerical semigroups via parallel bounded lexicographic streams
We describe a method for parallelizing the lexicographic enumeration algorithm for the factorization set of an element in a numerical semigroup via bounds. This enables the use of GPU and distributed computing methods. We provide a CUDA implementation with measured runtimes.
On the affine permutation group of certain decreasing Cartesian codes
Published • View PublicationBIB
A decreasing Cartesian code is defined by evaluating a monomial set closed under divisibility on a Cartesian set. Some well-known examples are the Reed-Solomon, Reed-Muller, and (some) toric codes. The affine permutations consist of the permutations of the code that depend on an affine transformation. In this work, we study the affine permutations of some decreasing Cartesian codes, including the case when the Cartesian set has copies of multiplicative or additive subgroups.

Asymptotics of bivariate algebraico-logarithmic generating functions
We derive asymptotic formulae for the coefficients of bivariate generating functions with algebraic and logarithmic factors. Logarithms appear when encoding cycles of combinatorial objects, and also implicitly when objects can be broken into indecomposable parts. Asymptotics are quickly computable and can verify combinatorial properties of sequences and assist in randomly generating objects. While multiple approaches for algebraic asymptotics have recently emerged, we find that the contour manipulation approach can be extended to these D-finite generating functions.

Generalized planar Turán numbers related to short cycles
Given two graphs $H$ and $F$, the generalized planar Turán number $\mathrm{ex}_\mathcal{P}(n,H,F)$ is the maximum number of copies of $H$ that an $n$-vertex $F$-free planar graph can have. We investigate this function when $H$ and $F$ are short cycles. Namely, for large $n$, we find the exact value of $\mathrm{ex}_\mathcal{P}(n, C_l,C_3)$, where $C_l$ is a cycle of length $l$, for $4\leq l\leq 6$, and determine the extremal graphs in each case. Also, considering the converse of these problems, we determine sharp upper bounds for $\mathrm{ex}_\mathcal{P}(n,C_3,C_l)$, for $4\leq l\leq 6$.

Hypergraphs accumulate

We show that for every integer $k\geq3$, the set of Turán densities of $k$-uniform hypergraphs has an accumulation point in $[0,1)$. In particular, $1/2$ is an accumulation point for the set of Turán densities of $3$-uniform hypergraphs.

Boundary minimal models and the Rogers-Ramanujan identities
Published • View PublicationBIB
We determine when the irreducible modules $L(c_{p, q}, h_{m, n})$ over the simple Virasoro vertex algebras $\operatorname{Vir}_{p, q}$, where $p, q \ge 2$ are relatively prime with $0 < m < p$ and $0 < n < q$, are classically free. It turns out this only happens with the boundary minimal models, i.e., with the irreducible modules over $\operatorname{Vir}_{2, 2s + 1}$ for $s \in \mathbb{Z}_+$. We thus obtain a complete description of the classical limits of these modules in terms of the jet algebra of the corresponding Zhu $C_2$-algebra. The Andrews-Gordon generalization of the Rogers-Ramanujan identities is used in the proof, and our results in turn provide a natural interpretation of these identities.
On the Sombor index of the total graph and the unit graph of commutative rings
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we investigate the Sombor index of the total graph and unit graph of $\mathbb{Z}_n$ which is denoted by $T_Γ(\mathbb{Z}_n)$ and $G(\mathbb{Z}_n)$ respectively for $n \in \{2k, p^α, pq, p^2q\}$ where $p$ and $q$ are distinct odd prime numbers such that $p < q$. Moreover, we compute the Sombor index of any finite local ring.
Improved bounds for polylogarithmic graph distances in scale-free percolation and related models
In this paper, we study graph distances in the geometric random graph models scale-free percolation SFP, geometric inhomogeneous random graphs GIRG, and hyperbolic random graphs HRG. Despite the wide success of the models, the parameter regime in which graph distances are polylogarithmic is poorly understood. We provide new and improved lower bounds. In a certain portion of the parameter regime, those match the known upper bounds. Compared to the best previous lower bounds by Hao and Heydenreich, our result has several advantages: it gives matching bounds for a larger range of parameters, thus settling the question for a larger portion of the parameter space. It strictly improves the lower bounds by Hao and Heydenreich for all parameters settings in which those bounds were not tight. It gives tail bounds on the probability of having short paths, which imply shape theorems for the $k$-neighbourhood of a vertex whenever our lower bounds are tight, and tight bounds for the size of this $k$-neighbourhood. And last but not least, our proof is much simpler and not much longer than two pages, and we demonstrate that it generalizes well by showing that the same technique also works for first passage percolation.

Regular nilpotent partial Hessenberg varieties
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $G$ be a complex semisimple linear algebraic group. Fix a subset $Θ$ of simple roots. Given a lower ideal $I$ in positive roots, one can define the regular nilpotent Hessenberg variety $\mbox{Hess}(N,I)$ in the full flag variety $G/B$. For a $Θ$-ideal $I$ (which is a special lower ideal), we can define the regular nilpotent partial Hessenberg variety $\mbox{Hess}_Θ(N,I)$ in the partial flag variety $G/P$. In this manuscript we first provide a summand formula and a product formula for the Poincaré polynomial of regular nilpotent partial Hessenberg varieties. It is a well-known result from Bernstein-Gelfand-Gelfand that the cohomology ring of the partial flag variety $G/P$ is isomorphic to the invariants in the cohomology ring of the full flag variety $G/B$ under an action of the parabolic Weyl group $W_Θ$ generated by $Θ$. We generalize this result to regular nilpotent partial Hessenberg varieties. More concretely, we give an isomorphism between the cohomology ring of a regular nilpotent partial Hessenberg variety $\mbox{Hess}_Θ(N,I)$ and the $W_Θ$-invariant subring of the cohomology ring of the regular nilpotent Hessenberg variety $\mbox{Hess}(N,I)$. Furthermore, we provide a description of the cohomology ring for a regular nilpotent partial Hessenberg variety $\mbox{Hess}_Θ(N,I)$ in terms of the $W_Θ$-invariants in the logarithmic derivation module of the ideal arrangement $\mathcal{A}_I$, which is a generalization of the result by Abe-Masuda-Murai-Sato with the author.

Multidimensional Stronger Central Sets Theorem and its Polynomial Extension

We establish and fully characterize the multidimensional extension of the Stronger Central Sets Theorem. Additionally, we develop a polynomial generalization of this result. Our approach utilizes tools from the Algebra of the Stone-Čech compactification of discrete semigroups. Several applications of these results are also discussed.

On the distance problem over finite p-adic rings
In this paper, we study the distance problem in the setting of finite p-adic rings. In odd dimensions, our results are essentially sharp. In even dimensions, we clarify the conjecture and provide examples to support it. Surprisingly, compared to the finite field case, in this setting, we are able to provide a large family of sets such that the distance conjecture holds. By developing new restriction type estimates associated to circles and orbits, with a group theoretic argument, we will prove the $4/3$-parallel result in the two dimensions. This answers a question raised by Alex Iosevich. In a more general scenario, the existence/distribution of geometric/graph configurations will be also considered in this paper. Our results present improvements and extensions of recent results due to Ben Lichtin (2019, 2023). In comparison with Lichtin's method, our approach is much simpler and flexible, which is also one of the novelties in this paper.

The Rank-Ramsey Problem and the Log-Rank Conjecture
Published • View PublicationBIB
A graph is called Rank-Ramsey if (i) Its clique number is small, and (ii) The adjacency matrix of its complement has small rank. We initiate a systematic study of such graphs. Our main motivation is that their constructions, as well as proofs of their non-existence, are intimately related to the famous log-rank conjecture from the field of communication complexity. These investigations also open interesting new avenues in Ramsey theory. We construct two families of Rank-Ramsey graphs exhibiting polynomial separation between order and complement rank. Graphs in the first family have bounded clique number (as low as $41$). These are subgraphs of certain strong products, whose building blocks are derived from triangle-free strongly-regular graphs. Graphs in the second family are obtained by applying Boolean functions to Erdős-Rényi graphs. Their clique number is logarithmic, but their complement rank is far smaller than in the first family, about $\mathcal{O}(n^{2/3})$. A key component of this construction is our matrix-theoretic view of lifts. We also consider lower bounds on the Rank-Ramsey numbers, and determine them in the range where the complement rank is $5$ or less. We consider connections between said numbers and other graph parameters, and find that the two best known explicit constructions of triangle-free Ramsey graphs turn out to be far from Rank-Ramsey.
Critical probabilities for positively associated, finite-range dependent percolation models
On a locally finite, infinite tree $T$, let $p_c(T)$ denote the critical probability for Bernoulli percolation. We prove that every positively associated, finite-range dependent percolation model on $T$ with marginals $p > p_c(T)$ must percolate. Among finite-range dependent models on trees, positive association is thus a favourable property for percolation to occur. On general graphs of bounded degree, Liggett, Schonmann and Stacey (1997) proved that finite-range dependent percolation models with sufficiently large marginals stochastically dominate product measures. Under the additional assumption of positive association, we prove that stochastic domination actually holds for arbitrary marginals. Our result thereby generalises Proposition 3.4 in Liggett, Schonmann and Stacey (1997) which was restricted to the special case $G = \mathbb{Z}$. Studying the class of 1-independent percolation models has proven useful in bounding critical probabilities of various percolation models via renormalization. In many cases, the renormalized model is not only 1-independent but also positively associated. This motivates us to introduce the smallest parameter $p_a^+(G)$ such that every positively associated, 1-independent bond percolation model on a graph $G$ with marginals $p > p_a^+(G)$ percolates. We obtain quantitative upper and lower bounds on $p_a^+(\mathbb{Z}^2)$ and on $p_a^+(\mathbb{Z}^n)$ as $n\to \infty$, and also study the case of oriented bond percolation. In proving these results, we revisit several techniques originally developed for Bernoulli percolation, which become applicable thanks to a simple but seemingly new way of combining positive association with finite-range dependence.
