Maximum Number of Almost Similar Triangles in the Plane
Published • View PublicationBIB
A triangle $T'$ is $\varepsilon$-similar to another triangle $T$ if their angles pairwise differ by at most $\varepsilon$. Given a triangle $T$, $\varepsilon>0$ and $n\in\mathbb{N}$, Bárány and Füredi asked to determine the maximum number of triangles $h(n,T,\varepsilon)$ being $\varepsilon$-similar to $T$ in a planar point set of size $n$. We show that for almost all triangles $T$ there exists $\varepsilon=\varepsilon(T)>0$ such that $h(n,T,\varepsilon)=n^3/24 (1+o(1))$. Exploring connections to hypergraph Turán problems, we use flag algebras and stability techniques for the proof.

On the number of sum-free triplets of sets
Published • View PublicationBIB
We count the ordered sum-free triplets of subsets in the group $\mathbb{Z}/p\mathbb{Z}$, i.e., the triplets $(A,B,C)$ of sets $A,B,C \subset \mathbb{Z}/p\mathbb{Z}$ for which the equation $a+b=c$ has no solution with $a\in A$, $b \in B$ and $c \in C$. Our main theorem improves on a recent result by Semchankau, Shabanov, and Shkredov using a different and simpler method. Our proof relates previous results on the number of independent sets of regular graphs by Kahn, Perarnau and Perkins, and Csikvári to produce explicit estimates on smaller order terms. We also obtain estimates for the number of sum-free triplets of subsets in a general abelian group.

Maximum determinant and permanent of sparse 0-1 matrices
Published • View PublicationBIB
We prove that the maximum determinant of an $n \times n $ matrix, with entries in $\{0,1\}$ and at most $n+k$ non-zero entries, is at most $2^{k/3}$, which is best possible when $k$ is a multiple of 3. This result solves a conjecture of Bruhn and Rautenbach. We also obtain an upper bound on the number of perfect matchings in $C_4$-free bipartite graphs based on the number of edges, which, in the sparse case, improves on the classical Bregman's inequality for permanents. This bound is tight, as equality is achieved by the graph formed by vertex disjoint union of 6-vertex cycles.

Generalized rainbow Turán numbers of odd cycles
Published • View PublicationBIB
Given graphs $F$ and $H$, the generalized rainbow Turán number $\text{ex}(n,F,\text{rainbow-}H)$ is the maximum number of copies of $F$ in an $n$-vertex graph with a proper edge-coloring that contains no rainbow copy of $H$. B. Janzer determined the order of magnitude of $\text{ex}(n,C_s,\text{rainbow-}C_t)$ for all $s\geq 4$ and $t\geq 3$, and a recent result of O. Janzer implied that $\text{ex}(n,C_3,\text{rainbow-}C_{2k})=O(n^{1+1/k})$. We prove the corresponding upper bound for the remaining cases, showing that $\text{ex}(n,C_3,\text{rainbow-}C_{2k+1})=O(n^{1+1/k})$. This matches the known lower bound for $k$ even and is conjectured to be tight for $k$ odd.

Ramsey upper density of infinite graph factors
Published • View PublicationBIB
The study of upper density problems on Ramsey theory was initiated by Erdős and Galvin in 1993. In this paper we are concerned with the following problem: given a fixed finite graph $F$, what is the largest value of $λ$ such that every 2-edge-coloring of the complete graph on $\mathbb{N}$ contains a monochromatic infinite $F$-factor whose vertex set has upper density at least $λ$? Here we prove a new lower bound for this problem. For some choices of $F$, including cliques and odd cycles, this new bound is sharp, as it matches an older upper bound. For the particular case where $F$ is a triangle, we also give an explicit lower bound of $1-\frac{1}{\sqrt{7}}=0.62203\dots$, improving the previous best bound of 3/5.

Chain method for panchromatic colorings of hypergraphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
We deal with an extremal problem concerning panchromatic colorings of hypergraphs. A vertex $r$-coloring of a hypergraph $H$ is \emph{panchromatic} if every edge meets every color. We prove that for every $3<r\leq\sqrt[3]{n/(100\ln n)}$, every $n$-uniform hypergraph $H$ with $|E(H)|\leq \frac{1}{20r^2}\left(\frac{n}{\ln n}\right)^{\frac {r-1}{r}}\left(\frac{r}{r-1}\right)^{n-1}$ has a panchromatic coloring with $r$ colors.

Tilings in vertex ordered graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Over recent years there has been much interest in both Turán and Ramsey properties of vertex ordered graphs. In this paper we initiate the study of embedding spanning structures into vertex ordered graphs. In particular, we introduce a general framework for approaching the problem of determining the minimum degree threshold for forcing a perfect $H$-tiling in an ordered graph. In the (unordered) graph setting, this problem was resolved by Kühn and Osthus [The minimum degree threshold for perfect graph packings, Combinatorica, 2009]. We use our general framework to resolve the perfect $H$-tiling problem for all ordered graphs $H$ of interval chromatic number $2$. Already in this restricted setting the class of extremal examples is richer than in the unordered graph problem. In the process of proving our results, novel approaches to both the regularity and absorbing methods are developed.
A Strengthening of the Erdős-Szekeres Theorem
Published • View PublicationBIB
The Erdős-Szekeres Theorem stated in terms of graphs says that any red-blue coloring of the edges of the ordered complete graph $K_{rs+1}$ contains a red copy of the monotone increasing path with $r$ edges or a blue copy of the monotone increasing path with $s$ edges. Although $rs + 1$ is the minimum number of vertices needed for this result, not all edges of $K_{rs+1}$ are necessary. We characterize the subgraphs of $K_{rs+1}$ with this coloring property as follows: they are exactly the subgraphs that contain all the edges of a graph we call the circus tent graph $CT(r,s)$. Additionally, we use similar proof techniques to improve upon some of the bounds on the online ordered size Ramsey number of a path given by Pérez-Giménez, Pralat, and West.

Maximum size intersecting families of bounded minimum positive co-degree
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $\mathcal{H}$ be an $r$-uniform hypergraph. The \emph{minimum positive co-degree} of $\mathcal{H}$, denoted by $δ_{r-1}^+(\mathcal{H})$, is the minimum $k$ such that if $S$ is an $(r-1)$-set contained in a hyperedge of $\mathcal{H}$, then $S$ is contained in at least $k$ hyperedges of $\mathcal{H}$. For $r\geq k$ fixed and $n$ sufficiently large, we determine the maximum possible size of an intersecting $r$-uniform $n$-vertex hypergraph with minimum positive co-degree $δ_{r-1}^+(\mathcal{H}) \geq k$ and characterize the unique hypergraph attaining this maximum. This generalizes the Erd\H os-Ko-Rado theorem which corresponds to the case $k=1$. Our proof is based on the delta-system method.

Independent sets in the middle two layers of Boolean lattice
Published • View PublicationBIB
For an odd integer $n=2d-1$, let $\mathcal{B}(n, d)$ be the subgraph of the hypercube $Q_n$ induced by the two largest layers. In this paper, we describe the typical structure of independent sets in $\mathcal{B}(n, d)$ and give precise asymptotics on the number of them. The proofs use Sapozhenko's graph container method and a recently developed method of Jenssen and Perkins, which combines Sapozhenko's graph container lemma with the cluster expansion for polymer models from statistical physics.

On stability of the Erdős-Rademacher Problem
Published • View PublicationBIB
Mantel's theorem states that every $n$-vertex graph with $\lfloor \frac{n^2}{4} \rfloor +t$ edges, where $t>0$, contains a triangle. The problem of determining the minimum number of triangles in such a graph is usually referred to as the Erdős-Rademacher problem. Lovász and Simonovits proved that there are at least $t\lfloor n/2 \rfloor$ triangles in each of those graphs. Katona and Xiao considered the same problem under the additional condition that there are no $s-1$ vertices covering all triangles. They settled the case $t=1$ and $s=2$. Solving their conjecture, we determine the minimum number of triangles for every fixed pair of $s$ and $t$, when $n$ is sufficiently large. Additionally, solving another conjecture of Katona and Xiao, we extend the theory for considering cliques instead of triangles.
A discrepancy version of the Hajnal-Szemerédi theorem
Published • View PublicationBIB
A perfect $K_r$-tiling in a graph $G$ is a collection of vertex-disjoint copies of the clique $K_r$ in $G$ covering every vertex of $G$. The famous Hajnal--Szemerédi theorem determines the minimum degree threshold for forcing a perfect $K_r$-tiling in a graph $G$. The notion of discrepancy appears in many branches of mathematics. In the graph setting, one assigns the edges of a graph $G$ labels from $\{-1,1\}$, and one seeks substructures $F$ of $G$ that have `high' discrepancy (i.e. the sum of the labels of the edges in $F$ is far from $0$). In this paper we determine the minimum degree threshold for a graph to contain a perfect $K_r$-tiling of high discrepancy.
On the discrepancies of graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
In the literature, the notion of discrepancy is used in several contexts, even in the theory of graphs. Here, for a graph $G$, $\{-1, 1\}$ labels are assigned to the edges, and we consider a family $\mathcal{S}_G$ of (spanning) subgraphs of certain types, among others spanning trees, Hamiltonian cycles. As usual, we seek for bounds on the sum of the labels that hold for all elements of $\mathcal{S}_G$, for every labeling.
Counting independent sets in regular hypergraphs

Amongst $d$-regular $r$-uniform hypergraphs on $n$ vertices, which ones have the largest number of independent sets? While the analogous problem for graphs (originally raised by Granville) is now well-understood, it is not even clear what the correct general conjecture ought to be; our goal here is propose such a generalisation. Lending credence to our conjecture, we verify it within the class of `quasi-bipartite' hypergraphs (a generalisation of bipartite graphs that seems natural in this context) by adopting the entropic approach of Kahn.
The domination number of the graph defined by two levels of the $n$-cube, II
Published • View PublicationBIB
Consider all $k$-element subsets and $\ell$-element subsets $(k>\ell )$ of an $n$-element set as vertices of a bipartite graph. Two vertices are adjacent if the corresponding $\ell$-element set is a subset of the corresponding $k$-element set. Let $G_{k,\ell}$ denote this graph. The domination number of $G_{k,1}$ was exactly determined by Badakhshian, Katona and Tuza. A conjecture was also stated there on the asymptotic value ($n$ tending to infinity) of the domination number of $G_{k,2}$. Here we prove the conjecture, determining the asymptotic value of the domination number $γ(G_{k,2})={k+3\over 2(k-1)(k+1)}n^2+o(n^2)$.

An efficient container lemma
Published in Discrete Analysis 2020:17 • Search Publication
We prove a new, efficient version of the hypergraph container theorems that is suited for hypergraphs with large uniformities. The main novelty is a refined approach to constructing containers that employs simple ideas from high-dimensional convex geometry. The existence of smaller families of containers for independent sets in such hypergraphs, which is guaranteed by the new theorem, allows us to improve upon the best currently known bounds for several problems in extremal graph theory, discrete geometry, and Ramsey theory.
Making $K_{r+1}$-Free Graphs $r$-partite
Published • View PublicationBIB
The Erdős-Simonovits stability theorem states that for all ε>0 there exists α>0 such that if G is a K_{r+1}-free graph on n vertices with e(G) > ex(n,K_{r+1}) - αn^2, then one can remove εn^2 edges from G to obtain an r-partite graph. Füredi gave a short proof that one can choose α=ε. We give a bound for the relationship of αand \varepsilon which is asymptotically sharp as ε\to 0.

An analogue of the Erdős-Gallai theorem for random graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Recently, variants of many classical extremal theorems have been proved in the random environment. We, complementing existing results, extend the Erdős-Gallai Theorem in random graphs. In particular, we determine, up to a constant factor, the maximum number of edges in a $P_n$-free subgraph of $G(N,p)$, practically for all values of $N,n$ and $p$. Our work is also motivated by the recent progress on the size-Ramsey number of paths.
The maximum length of $K_r$-Bootstrap Percolation
Published • View PublicationBIB
Graph-bootstrap percolation, also known as weak saturation, was introduced by Bollobás in 1968. In this process, we start with initial "infected" set of edges $E_0$, and we infect new edges according to a predetermined rule. Given a graph $H$ and a set of previously infected edges $E_t\subseteq E(K_n)$, we infect a non-infected edge $e$ if it completes a new copy of $H$ in $G=([n],E_t\cup e)$. A question raised by Bollobás asks for the maximum time the process can run before it stabilizes. Bollobás, Przykucki, Riordan, and Sahasrabudhe considered this problem for the most natural case where $H=K_r$. They answered the question for $r\leq 4$ and gave a non-trivial lower bound for every $r\geq 5$. They also conjectured that the maximal running time is $o(n^2)$ for every integer $r$. In this paper we disprove their conjecture for every $r\geq 6$ and we give a better lower bound for the case $r=5$; in the proof we use the Behrend construction.
Monochromatic paths and cycles in $2$-edge-colored graphs with large minimum degree
Published • View PublicationBIB
A graph $G$ arrows a graph $H$ if in every $2$-edge-coloring of $G$ there exists a monochromatic copy of $H$. Schelp had the idea that if the complete graph $K_n$ arrows a small graph $H$, then every "dense" subgraph of $K_n$ also arrows $H$, and he outlined some problems in this direction. Our main result is in this spirit. We prove that for every sufficiently large $n$, if $n = 3t+r$ where $r \in \{0,1,2\}$ and $G$ is an $n$-vertex graph with $δ(G) \ge (3n-1)/4$, then for every $2$-edge-coloring of $G$, either there are cycles of every length $\{3, 4, 5, \dots, 2t+r\}$ of the same color, or there are cycles of every even length $\{4, 6, 8, \dots, 2t+2\}$ of the same color. Our result is tight in the sense that no longer cycles (of length $>2t+r$) can be guaranteed and the minimum degree condition cannot be reduced. It also implies the conjecture of Schelp that for every sufficiently large $n$, every $(3t-1)$-vertex graph $G$ with minimum degree larger than $3|V(G)|/4$ arrows the path $P_{2n}$ with $2n$ vertices. Moreover, it implies for sufficiently large $n$ the conjecture by Benevides, Łuczak, Scott, Skokan and White that for $n=3t+r$ where $r \in \{0,1,2\}$ and every $n$-vertex graph $G$ with $δ(G) \ge 3n/4$, in each $2$-edge-coloring of $G$ there exists a monochromatic cycle of length at least $2t+r$.
