Stanley character polynomials
Published in The mathematical legacy of Richard P. Stanley, 323-334, Amer. Math. Soc., Providence, RI, 2016 • View PublicationBIB
Stanley considered suitably normalized characters of the symmetric groups on Young diagrams having a special geometric form, namely multirectangular Young diagrams. He proved that the character is a polynomial in the lengths of the sides of the rectangles forming the Young diagram and he conjectured an explicit form of this polynomial. This Stanley character polynomial and this way of parametrizing the set of Young diagrams turned out to be a powerful tool for several problems of the dual combinatorics of the characters of the symmetric groups and asymptotic representation theory, in particular to Kerov polynomials.

Robinson-Schensted-Knuth algorithm, jeu de taquin and Kerov-Vershik measures on infinite tableaux
Published in SIAM J. Discrete Math. 28 (2014), no. 2, 598-630 • View PublicationBIB
We investigate Robinson-Schensted-Knuth algorithm (RSK) and Schützenberger's jeu de taquin in the infinite setup. We show that the recording tableau in RSK defines an isomorphism of the following two dynamical systems: (i) a sequence of i.i.d. random letters equipped with Bernoulli shift, and (ii) a random infinite Young tableau (with the distribution given by Vershik-Kerov measure, corresponding to some Thoma character of the infinite symmetric group) equipped with jeu de taquin transformation. As a special case we recover the results on non-colliding random walks and multidimensional Pitman transform.

Limit shapes of bumping routes in the Robinson-Schensted correspondence
Published in Random Struct. Alg., 48 (2016), no. 1, 171-182 • View PublicationBIB
We prove a limit shape theorem describing the asymptotic shape of bumping routes when the Robinson-Schensted algorithm is applied to a finite sequence of independent, identically distributed random variables with the uniform distribution $U[0,1]$ on the unit interval, followed by an insertion of a deterministic number $α$. The bumping route converges after scaling, in the limit as the length of the sequence tends to infinity, to an explicit, deterministic curve depending only on $α$. This extends our previous result on the asymptotic determinism of Robinson-Schensted insertion, and answers a question posed by Moore in 2006.

Jack polynomials and orientability generating series of maps
Published in Sém. Lothar. Combin., 70:Art. B70j, 50 pp., 2014 (electronic) • Search Publication
We study Jack characters, which are the coefficients of the power-sum expansion of Jack symmetric functions with a suitable normalization. These quantities have been introduced by Lassalle who formulated some challenging conjectures about them. We conjecture existence of a weight on non-oriented maps (i.e., graphs drawn on non-oriented surfaces) which allows to express any given Jack character as a weighted sum of some simple functions indexed by maps. We provide a candidate for this weight which gives a positive answer to our conjecture in some, but unfortunately not all, cases. In particular, it gives a positive answer for Jack characters specialized on Young diagrams of rectangular shape. This candidate weight attempts to measure, in a sense, the non-orientability of a given map.

Dimensions of components of tensor products of the linear groups representations with applications to Beurling-Fourier algebras
Published in Studia Math. 220 (2014), no. 3, 221-241 • View PublicationBIB
We give universal upper bounds on the relative dimensions of isotypic components of a tensor product of the linear group GL(n) representations and universal upper bounds on the relative dimensions of irreducible components of a tensor product of the special linear group SL(n) representations. This problem is motivated by harmonic analysis problems, and we give some applications of this result in the theory of Beurling-Fourier algebras.

Combinatorics of asymptotic representation theory
Published in European Congress of Mathematics, Kraków, 2--7 July, 2012, pp: 531-545, European Mathematical Society Publishing House • View PublicationBIB
The representation theory of the symmetric groups S_n is intimately related to combinatorics: combinatorial objects such as Young tableaux and combinatorial algorithms such as Murnaghan-Nakayama rule. In the limit as n tends to infinity, the structure of these combinatorial objects and algorithms becomes complicated and it is hard to extract from them some meaningful answers to asymptotic questions. In order to overcome these difficulties, a kind of dual combinatorics of the representation theory of the symmetric groups was initiated in 1990s. We will concentrate on one of its highlights: Kerov polynomials which express characters in terms of, so called, free cumulants.

Jeu de taquin dynamics on infinite Young tableaux and second class particles
Published in Annals of Probability 2015, Vol. 43, 682-737 • View PublicationBIB
We study an infinite version of the "jeu de taquin" sliding game, which can be thought of as a natural measure-preserving transformation on the set of infinite Young tableaux equipped with the Plancherel probability measure. We use methods from representation theory to show that the Robinson-Schensted-Knuth ($\operatorname {RSK}$) algorithm gives an isomorphism between this measure-preserving dynamical system and the one-sided shift dynamics on a sequence of independent and identically distributed random variables distributed uniformly on the unit interval. We also show that the jeu de taquin paths induced by the transformation are asymptotically straight lines emanating from the origin in a random direction whose distribution is computed explicitly, and show that this result can be interpreted as a statement on the limiting speed of a second-class particle in the Plancherel-TASEP particle system (a variant of the Totally Asymmetric Simple Exclusion Process associated with Plancherel growth), in analogy with earlier results for second class particles in the ordinary TASEP.

Polynomial functions on Young diagrams arising from bipartite graphs
Published in Discrete Mathematics & Theoretical Computer Science Proc. AO, 2011, 257-268 • Search Publication
We study the class of functions on the set of (generalized) Young diagrams arising as the number of embeddings of bipartite graphs. We give a criterion for checking when such a function is a polynomial function on Young diagrams (in the sense of Kerov and Olshanski) in terms of combinatorial properties of the corresponding bipartite graphs. Our method involves development of a differential calculus of functions on the set of generalized Young diagrams.
Characters of symmetric groups in terms of free cumulants and Frobenius coordinates
Published in Discrete Mathematics and Theoretical Computer Science Proc. AK, 2009, 337-348 • Search Publication
Free cumulants are nice and useful functionals of the shape of a Young diagram, in particular they give the asymptotics of normalized characters of symmetric groups S(n) in the limit n\to\infty. We give an explicit combinatorial formula for normalized characters of the symmetric groups in terms of free cumulants. We also express characters in terms of Frobenius coordinates. Our formulas involve counting certain factorizations of a given permutation. The main tool are Stanley polynomials which give values of characters on multirectangular Young diagrams.

Zonal polynomials via Stanley's coordinates and free cumulants
Published in Journal of Algebra, Volume 334, Issue 1, 2011, Pages 338-373 • View PublicationBIB
We study zonal characters which are defined as suitably normalized coefficients in the expansion of zonal polynomials in terms of power-sum symmetric functions. We show that the zonal characters, just like the characters of the symmetric groups, admit a nice combinatorial description in terms of Stanley's multirectangular coordinates of Young diagrams. We also study the analogue of Kerov polynomials, namely we express the zonal characters as polynomials in free cumulants and we give an explicit combinatorial interpretation of their coefficients. In this way, we prove two recent conjectures of Lassalle for Jack polynomials in the special case of zonal polynomials.

Asymptotics of characters of symmetric groups: structure of Kerov character polynomials
Published in Journal of Combinatorial Theory, Series A, 119 (6), 2012, pp 1174-1193 • View PublicationBIB
We study asymptotics of characters of the symmetric groups on a fixed conjugacy class. It was proved by Kerov that such a character can be expressed as a polynomial in free cumulants of the Young diagram (certain functionals describing the shape of the Young diagram). We show that for each genus there exists a universal symmetric polynomial which gives the coefficients of the part of Kerov character polynomials with the prescribed homogeneous degree. The existence of such symmetric polynomials was conjectured by Lassalle.

Explicit combinatorial interpretation of Kerov character polynomials as numbers of permutation factorizations
Published in Adv. Math. 225 (2010), no. 1, 81-120 • View PublicationBIB
We find an explicit combinatorial interpretation of the coefficients of Kerov character polynomials which express the value of normalized irreducible characters of the symmetric groups S(n) in terms of free cumulants R_2,R_3,... of the corresponding Young diagram. Our interpretation is based on counting certain factorizations of a given permutation.

Generalized Cauchy identities, trees and multidimensional Brownian motions. Part II: Combinatorial differential calculus
We present an analogue of the differential calculus in which the role of polynomials is played by certain ordered sets and trees. Our combinatorial calculus has all nice features of the usual calculus and has an advantage that the elements of the considered ordered sets might carry some additional information. In this way an analytic proof of generalized Cauchy identities from the previous work of the second author can be directly reformulated in our new language of the combinatorial calculus; furthermore the additional information carried by vertices determines uniquely the bijections presented in Part I of this series.

Asymptotics of characters of symmetric groups related to Stanley character formula
Published in Ann. Math. 173 (2011), no. 2, 887-906 • View PublicationBIB
We prove an upper bound for characters of the symmetric groups. Namely, we show that there exists a constant a>0 with a property that for every Young diagram λwith n boxes, r(λ) rows and c(λ) columns |Tr ρ^λ(π) / Tr ρ^λ(e)| < [a max(r(λ)/n, c(λ)/n,|π|/n) ]^{|π|}, where |π| is the minimal number of factors needed to write π\in S_n as a product of transpositions. We also give uniform estimates for the error term in the Vershik-Kerov's and Biane's character formulas and give a new formula for free cumulants of the transition measure.

Upper bound on the characters of the symmetric groups for balanced Young diagrams and a generalized Frobenius formula
Published in Advances in Mathematics 218 (2008) 673-695 • View PublicationBIB
We study asymptotics of an irreducible representation of the symmetric group S_n corresponding to a balanced Young diagram λ(a Young diagram with at most C\sqrt{n} rows and columns for some fixed constant C) in the limit as n tends to infinity. We show that there exists a constant D (which depends only on C) with a property that |χ^λ(π)| = | Tr ρ^λ(π)/Tr ρ^λ(e) | < [ D max(1,|π|^2/n) / \sqrt{n}} ]^{|π|}, where |π| denotes the length of a permutation (the minimal number of factors necessary to write πas a product of transpositions). Our main tool is an analogue of Frobenius character formula which holds true not only for cycles but for arbitrary permutations.

Permutations without long decreasing subsequences and random matrices
Published in Electron. J. Combin. 14(1), 2007, Research Paper 11 • Search Publication
We study the shape of the Young diagram λassociated via the Robinson-Schensted-Knuth algorithm to a random permutation in S_n such that the length of the longest decreasing subsequence is not bigger than a fixed number d; in other words we study the restriction of the Plancherel measure to Young diagrams with at most d rows. We prove that in the limit n\to\infty the rows of λbehave like the eigenvalues of a certain random matrix (traceless Gaussian Unitary Ensemble) with d rows and columns. In particular, the length of the longest increasing subsequence of such a random permutation behaves asymptotically like the largest eigenvalue of the corresponding random matrix.

Gaussian fluctuations of characters of symmetric groups and of Young diagrams
Published in Probab. Theory Related Fields 136 (2006), no. 2, 263-297 • View PublicationBIB
We study asymptotics of reducible representations of the symmetric groups S_q for large q. We decompose such a representation as a sum of irreducible components (or, alternatively, Young diagrams) and we ask what is the character of a randomly chosen component (or, what is the shape of a randomly chosen Young diagram). Our main result is that for a large class of representations the fluctuations of characters (and fluctuations of the shape of the Young diagrams) are asymptotically Gaussian; in this way we generalize Kerov's central limit theorem. The considered class consists of representations for which the characters almost factorize and this class includes, for example, left-regular representation (Plancherel measure), tensor representations. This class is also closed under induction, restriction, outer product and tensor product of representations. Our main tool in the proof is the method of genus expansion, well known from the random matrix theory.

In this series of articles we study connections between combinatorics of multidimensional generalizations of Cauchy identity and continuous objects such as multidimensional Brownian motions and Brownian bridges. In Part I of the series we present a bijective proof of multidimensional generalizations of the Cauchy identity. Our bijection uses oriented planar trees equipped with some linear orders.

Asymptotics of characters of symmetric groups, genus expansion and free probability
Published in Discrete Math., 306 (7):624-665, 2006 • View PublicationBIB
The convolution of indicators of two conjugacy classes on the symmetric group S_q is usually a complicated linear combination of indicators of many conjugacy classes. Similarly, a product of the moments of the Jucys--Murphy element involves many conjugacy classes with complicated coefficients. In this article we consider a combinatorial setup which allows us to manipulate such products easily: to each conjugacy class we associate a two-dimensional surface and the asymptotic properties of the conjugacy class depend only on the genus of the resulting surface. This construction closely resembles the genus expansion from the random matrix theory. As the main application we study irreducible representations of symmetric groups S_q for large q. We find the asymptotic behavior of characters when the corresponding Young diagram rescaled by a factor q^{-1/2} converge to a prescribed shape. The character formula (known as the Kerov polynomial) can be viewed as a power series, the terms of which correspond to two-dimensional surfaces with prescribed genus and we compute explicitly the first two terms, thus we prove a conjecture of Biane.

Free probability and representations of large symmetric groups
We study the asymptotic behavior of the free cumulants (in the sense of free probability theory of Voiculescu) of Jucys--Murphy elements--or equivalently--of the transition measure associated with a Young diagram. We express these cumulants in terms of normalized characters of the appropriate representation of the symmetric group S_q. Our analysis considers the case when the Young diagrams rescaled by q^{-1/2} converge towards some prescribed shape. We find explicitly the second order asymptotic expansion and outline the algorithm which allows to find the asymptotic expansion of any order. As a corollary we obtain the second order asymptotic expansion of characters evaluated on cycles in terms of free cumulants, i.e. we find explicitly terms in Kerov polynomials with the appropriate degree.
