Automorphisms of the boundary complex of $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{0, n}(\mathbb{P}^r, d)$
We compute the automorphism group of the dual complex $\mathsf{T}_{d, n}$ of the boundary divisor in the Kontsevich moduli space $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{0, n}(\mathbb{P}^r, d)$. When $d \geq 2$, we find that $\mathrm{Aut}(\mathsf{T}_{d, n}) \cong \mathbb{S}_{n}$, while $\mathrm{Aut}(\mathsf{T}_{1, n}) \cong \mathbb{S}_{n + 1}$ for all $n \geq 4$. The complex $\mathsf{T}_{1, n}$ is also the dual complex of the boundary divisor in the Fulton--MacPherson compactification of the configuration space of $n$ points on $X$, if $X$ is any smooth, proper, and connected algebraic variety over $\mathbb{C}$. Following work of Massarenti, this implies that $\mathsf{T}_{1, n}$ admits automorphisms which in general do not extend to $X[n]$.
Cliques in graphs constructed from Strongly Orthogonal Subsets in exceptional root systems
Given a root system $R$, two roots are said to be \emph{strongly orthogonal} if neither their sum nor difference is a root. Gashi defined a family of graphs with vertices labelled by sums of $k$-element strongly orthogonal subsets of roots, and edges connect vertices whose difference is also a vertex. Gashi and the current authors established Erdős--Ko--Rado type results for graphs developed from Type $A$ root systems.
In this paper, we study graphs developed from the exceptional root systems $G_2$, $F_4$, $E_6$, $E_7$, and $E_8$. We compute graph-theoretic invariants including regularity, connectivity, and clique numbers, and analyze clique structures with respect to sunflower properties. The automorphism group contains the Weyl group; we use these symmetries to obtain complete counts of maximum cliques and maximum sunflowers. Unlike type $A$, where all maximal cliques are sunflowers for large rank, sunflower cliques comprise at most 11\% of maximum cliques in the simply-laced exceptional types $E_6$, $E_7$, and $E_8$.
Efficient total coloring of cubic maps of girth 4
Let $2\le k\in\mathbb{Z}$. A total coloring of a
$k$-regular simple graph via $k+1$ colors is an efficient total coloring if each color yields an efficient dominating set, where the 3-cube
efficient domination condition applies to the restriction of each color class to the vertex set. Focus was set upon graphs of girth $k+1$ with efficient total colorings of finite simple cubic graphs $Γ$ of girth 4 built up from the 3-cube and leading to a conjecture that all of those colorings were obtained by means of four basic operations. In the present work, a fifth basic operation is found necessary in terms of combinatorial cubic maps $M(Γ)$ of which the graphs $Γ$ are their 1-skeletons. This takes to conjecturing
that any simple cubic graph that is toroidally 3-edge-connected (defined in the work) and whose $\ell$-belts have $\ell\equiv 0$ mod 4 has an efficient total coloring.
A semicontinuous relaxation of Saito's criterion and freeness as angular minimization
We introduce a nonnegative functional on the space of line arrangements in $\mathbb{P}^2$ that vanishes precisely on free arrangements, obtained as a semicontinuous relaxation of Saito's criterion for freeness. Given an arrangement $\mathcal{A}$ of $n$ lines with candidate exponents $(d_1, d_2)$, we parameterize the spaces of logarithmic derivations of degrees $d_1$ and $d_2$ via the null spaces of the associated derivation matrices and express the Saito determinant as a bilinear map into the space of degree $n$ polynomials. The functional then admits a natural geometric interpretation: it measures the squared sine of the angle between the image of this bilinear map and the direction of the defining polynomial $Q(\mathcal{A})$ in coefficient space, and equals zero if and only if its image contains the line spanned by $Q(\mathcal{A})$. This provides a computable measure of how far a given arrangement is from admitting a free basis of logarithmic derivations of the expected degrees.
Using this functional as a reward signal, we develop a sequential construction procedure in which lines are added one at a time so as to minimize the angular distance to freeness, implemented via reinforcement learning with an adaptive curriculum over arrangement sizes and exponent types.
Our results suggest that semicontinuous relaxation techniques, grounded in the geometry of polynomial coefficient spaces, offer a viable approach to the computational exploration of freeness in the theory of line arrangements.
Spectral Properties of Zero-Divisor Graphs of Truncated Polynomial Rings
Let $R$ be a commutative ring with identity and let $Z^{\ast}(R)$ denote the set of nonzero zero-divisors of $R$. The \emph{zero-divisor graph} $ \varGamma(R)$ is the simple graph with vertex set $V( \varGamma(R))=Z^{\ast}(R)$, where two distinct vertices$x,y\in Z^{\ast}(R)$ are adjacent if and only if $xy=0$ in $R$. In this paper we investigate the zero-divisor graph of the truncated polynomial ring $R=\mathbb{Z}_{p}[x]/\langle x^{c}\rangle,$ for $c\in\mathbb{N}.$ We determine the spectrum of the $A_α$-matrix associated with $ \varGamma(R)$, and, as special cases, explicitly obtain both the adjacency spectrum and the signless Laplacian spectrum of $ \varGamma(R)$. Furthermore, we prove that the Laplacian eigenvalues, as well as the distance eigenvalues, of these graphs are all integers.
Range of random $\mathbb Z$-homomorphisms on weak expanders
We prove that random $\mathbb{Z}$-homomorphisms on weakly expanding bipartite graphs exhibit a strong "flatness" phenomenon. Extending prior work of Peled, Samotij, and Yehudayoff for expanders, we first show that on any bipartite $(n, d, λ)$-graph with $λ\leq (1-δ)d$, a uniformly chosen $\mathbb{Z}$-homomorphism has a range at most $O(\log \log n)$ with high probability, which is tight up to a constant factor. This provides an affirmative answer to their question in the spectral setting. As a concrete application, we prove that a random $\mathbb{Z}$-homomorphism on the middle layers of the Hamming cube takes at most $5$ values with high probability. This shows that the $O(1)$-flatness for the full Hamming cube, proved by Kahn and Galvin, persists even when the rigid structural properties are relaxed.
Bounds on Decorated Sweep Covers in Tree Posets
We introduce decorated sweep covers as a colouring on maximal antichains in tree posets such that if two elements have the same colour they are siblings. DSCs appear in applications wherever maximal antichains require structural differentiation among parallel options that have a common ancestry, e.g., distributed systems, drone routing in logistics, and Monte Carlo Tree Search. We restrict our analysis to enumerating $k$-coloured DSCs in $n$-ary tree posets and prove i) their ordinary generating function in Theorem 1, ii) new Schur-convexity results for binomial coefficients in Theorem 2 and iii) bounds on the OGF coefficients which scale as $Θ(D_n^k k^β)$ in Theorem 3 where $D_n$ is the exponential growth constant for $n$ determined by the OGF and $β\geq n^2 - 1$.
On Matrices Whose Distinct Eigenvalues Are Fully Captured by Quotient Matrices
Let $M$ be the $n$-square matrix partitioned into $\ell^2$ blocks $b_{ij}$ according to some partition $P=\{C_{1},\dots,C_{\ell}\}$ of index set $\{1,\dots,n\}$. The quotient matrix $Q=(q_{ij})$ is a $k$-square matrix, with $\ell \leq k \leq n-1$, where $(ij)$-th entry is the average row sum (or column sum) of the corresponding block $b_{ij}$ in $M$. The partition $P$ is said to be \emph{equitable} if row sum of each block $b_{ij}$ is constant. In this case, the matrix $Q$ is referred to as the \emph{equitable quotient matrix} of $M$, and the spectrum of $Q$ is the subset of the spectrum of parent matrix $M$. We characterize some classes of matrices such that their equitable quotient matrix $Q$ contains all the distinct eigenvalues of $M$, thereby information can be obtained form the smallest matrix $Q$ without actually analyzing the parent matrix $M.$ We present necessary and the sufficient conditions for distinct eigenvalue of $M$ contained in the spectrum of of $Q$ in terms of eigenspaces. We end up article with some applications, where distinct eigenvalues of a parent matrix can be completely encoded by quotient matrix.
Falconer lattice sets and the Erdos similarity problem
We show that a family of extremely thin sets satisfy the Erdős similarity conjecture. These examples lie outside the range covered by recent work of Shmerkin and Yavicoli \cite{ShmerkinYavicoli2025}. As we shall see, they have small logarithmic dimension. They do not contain affine copies of slowly decaying sequences, so the result does not follow from earlier work of Falconer and Eigen \cite{Falconer1984,Eigen}. On the other hand, they do contain sequences of rapid decay, for which the conjecture is still open in general. Our argument is based on Falconer lattice sets and a theorem of Bourgain \cite{Bourgain2003}.
The Quantum Walk Characteristic Polynomial Distinguishes All Strongly Regular Graphs of Prime Orde
Let $G$ be a strongly regular graph of prime order $p$ with connection degree $k \geq 6$. We prove that the \emph{quantum walk characteristic polynomial} $χ_q(G,λ) \coloneqq \det(λI - U_G)$, where $U_G$ is the coined quantum walk operator on $G$, completely determines $G$ up to isomorphism within the class of strongly regular graphs of the same order.
The proof proceeds in three steps. First, we show that $U_G$ block-diagonalizes under the discrete Fourier transform over $\Z_p$, yielding $p$ blocks $U_G^{(j)}$ of size $k \times k$. Second, we prove an explicit formula \[
χ_q\!\bigl(U_G^{(j)}, λ\bigr) =
(λ-1)^{(k-2)/2}(λ+1)^{(k-2)/2}
\!\left(λ^2 - \tfrac{2\widehat{A}_G(j)}{k}\,λ+ 1\right), \] from which the Fourier coefficient $\widehat{A}_G(j)$ is recovered as the unique real part of an eigenvalue of $U_G^{(j)}$ distinct from $\pm 1$. Third, the inverse discrete Fourier transform recovers the connection set $S$ of $G$, and Turner's theorem (1967) identifies $G$ up to isomorphism. As a consequence, graph isomorphism is decidable in polynomial time within this class using the quantum walk spectrum, without resorting to the general quasi-polynomial algorithm of Babai (2016).
A $\mathbb{Z}_2$-Topological Framework for Sign-rank Lower Bounds
We develop a topological framework for proving lower bounds on sign-rank via $\mathbb{Z}_2$-equivariant topology, and use it to resolve the sign-rank of the Gap Hamming Distance problem up to lower-order terms.
For every (partial) sign matrix $A$, we associate a free $\mathbb{Z}_2$-simplicial complex $S(A)$ and show that sign-rank of $A$ is characterized by the linear analog of $\mathbb{Z}_2$-index of $S(A)$. As a consequence, the classical $\mathbb{Z}_2$-index of $S(A)$ lower bounds the sign-rank of $A$, which reduces sign-rank lower bounds to topological obstructions. This reduction allows us to use various tools from $\mathbb{Z}_2$-equivariant topology, particularly in regimes where classical lower-bound techniques break down.
As the main application, we consider the Gap Hamming Distance function $\mathrm{GHD}_k^n$ (defined for $k < n/2$), which distinguishes pairs of strings in $\{0,1\}^n$ with Hamming distance at most $k$ from pairs with distance at least $n-k$. We prove an essentially tight lower bound and show that for any $k$, \[ \text{sign-rank}(\mathrm{GHD}_k^n) = (1-o_k(1)) 2k. \]
where the $o_k(1)$ term is $O\left(\sqrt{\frac{\log k}{k}}\right)$. This improves on the previous lower bound of Hatami, Hosseini, and Meng (STOC 2023) who proved that sign-rank of $\mathrm{GHD}_k^n$ is at least $Ω(k/\log(n/k))$.
A key technical ingredient is a new analysis of the $\mathbb{Z}_2$-coindex (which lower bounds $\mathbb{Z}_2$-index) of the Vietoris-Rips complex of the hypercube in the sparse regime which yields an essentially tight lower bound. Previously, no results were known in the sparse regime.
Overconstrained character sums over finite abelian groups and decompositions of generalized bent, plateaued and landscape functions
Generalized bent (gbent) functions from an $n$-variable Boolean space to $\mathbb{Z}_{2^k}$ are central in cryptography and sequence design. Instead of the usual binary decomposition, we introduce a $2^\ell$-adic representation, for $k=\ell r$, writing such functions as linear combinations of $r$ component functions valued in $\mathbb{Z}_{2^\ell}$. We prove a general result on overconstrained character sums over finite abelian groups: under a common-argument hypothesis, sequences with two-level Fourier magnitude spectra must be extremely sparse, with a conditional extension to multi-level spectra. As an application, we derive consequences for generalized plateaued functions under suitable assumptions. We then show that if $f:\mathbb{F}_2^n\to\mathbb{Z}_{2^k}$ is landscape, then under the $2^\ell$-adic decomposition every function in a certain affine space over $\mathbb{Z}_{2^\ell}$ is again landscape with the same Walsh magnitudes. This gives an unconditional necessity result, with no structural assumptions on $f$, together with a complete characterization using only a small subset of these maps. For generalized bent and generalized plateaued functions, sufficiency is also obtained from linear combinations of lower components under natural assumptions; a counterexample shows these assumptions are essential. Our method reduces verification for landscape functions from $2^{2^{k-1}}$ checks to fewer than $2^{k-\ell+1}+1$ conditions; for gbent functions this drops to a single basis function under the common-argument hypothesis, and for generalized plateaued functions, under additional assumptions, to $2^{k-\ell}$ checks. The $2^\ell$-adic framework also preserves key properties, including duality and differential uniformity.
On expectations and variances in the hard-core model
The hard-core model can be used to understand the numbers of independent sets in graphs in extremal graph theory. The occupancy fraction, defined as the logarithmic derivative of the independence polynomial of a graph, is a key quantity in hard-core model. Davies \textit{et al.} (2017) established an upper bound on the occupancy fraction for $d$-regular graphs, and Perarnau and Perkins (2018) derived a corresponding bound on it for graphs with given girth. Inspired by their work, we provide the tight upper and lower bounds on occupancy fraction in $n$-vertex graphs with independence number $α$, extending the classical results on bounds for independence polynomials. We also prove a relevant conjecture posed by Davies \textit{et al.} (2025) to this topic.
(Even hole, triangle)-free graphs revisited
We revisit a classical paper about (even hole, triangle)-free graphs [Conforti, Cornuéjols, Kapoor and Vu\v sković, Triangle-free graphs that are signable without even holes, Journal of Graph Theory, 34(3), 204--220, 2000]. In fact, the previous study describes a more general class, the so called triangle-free odd signable graphs, and we further generalise the class to the (theta, triangle, wac)-free graphs (not worth defining in an abstract).
We exhibit a stronger structure theorem, by precisely describing basic classes and separators. We prove that the separators preserve the treewidth and several properties. Some consequences are a recognition algorithm with running time $O(|V(G)|^4|E(G)|)$, a proof that the treewidth of graphs in the class is at most~4 (improving a previous bound of~5), and a simple criterion to decide if a graph in the class is planar.
Semicircle laws with combined variance for non-uniform Erdős-Rényi hypergraphs
We consider Erdős-Rényi-type random hypergraphs that are non-uniform, in the sense that hyperedges of different sizes may coexist, and inhomogeneous, in that connection probabilities may depend on the hyperedge size. All parameters are allowed to scale with the hypergraph size. We study the random adjacency matrix whose $(u,v)$-entry counts the number of hyperedges containing both vertices $u$ and $v$, and characterize its expected limiting spectral distribution in terms of the connection probabilities and the hyperedge sizes. We provide a Pastur-type condition, in the sense of Chatterjee (2005), under which the matrix can be Gaussianized, as well as a more restrictive but simpler sufficient condition in terms of the generalized average degree of the model. As a second main result, based on such a Gaussianization, we characterize the limiting spectral distributions under non-sparse conditions as semicircle laws with an explicit parametric variance. The latter can be expressed as a convex combination of the variances arising in the uniform cases, with coefficients determined by the trade-off between the different sources of inhomogeneity.
King Chasing Problem in Chinese Chess is NP-hard
We prove that king chasing problem in Chinese Chess is NP-hard when generalized to $n\times n$ boards. `King chasing' is a frequently-used strategy in Chinese Chess, which means that the player has to continuously check the opponent in every move until finally checkmating the opponent's king. The problem is to determine which player has a winning strategy in generalized Chinese Chess, under the constraints of king chasing. Obviously, it is a sub-problem of generalized Chinese Chess problem. We prove that king chasing problem in Chinese Chess is NP-hard by reducing from the classic NP-complete problem 3-SAT.
An Erdős-Ko-Rado result for some principal series representations
Let $V$ be an irreducible principal series representation of $\mathrm{GL}_2(q)$ satisfying certain conditions. Two subsets $S_1, S_2 \subseteq \mathrm{GL}_2(q)$ are called cross-$t$-intersecting if $\dim\{v \in V: g_1v = g_2v\} \geqslant t$ for any $(g_1, g_2) \in S_1 \times S_2$. In this paper, we determine $\max(|S_1|\cdot|S_2|)$ where $S_1, S_2 \subseteq \mathrm{GL}_2(q)$ are cross-$1$-intersecting. Our proofs are based on eigenvalue techniques and the representation theory of $\mathrm{GL}_2(q)$.
Tree-independence number and forbidden induced subgraphs: excluding a $6$-vertex path and a $(2,t)$-biclique
We show that for every positive integer ${t \geq 2}$ there exists an integer $s$ such that every graph that contains no induced subgraph isomorphic to either the $6$-vertex path or the $(2,t)$-biclique, the complete bipartite graph $K_{2,t}$, has tree-independence number at most $s$. This result makes partial progress on a conjecture of Dallard, Krnc, Kwon, Milanič, Munaro, Štorgel, and Wiederrecht.
On the existence of linear rank-metric intersecting codes
Intersecting codes are a classical object in coding theory whose rank-metric analogue has recently been introduced. Although the definition formally parallels the Hamming-metric case, the structure and parameter constraints of rank-metric intersecting codes exhibit substantially different behavior. It was previously shown that a nondegenerate $[n,k,d]_{q^m/q}$ rank-metric intersecting code must satisfy $2k-1 \le n \le 2m-3$, and the tightness of the upper bound was left open. Using the geometric interpretation of rank-metric codes via $q$-systems, we prove that the dual subspace associated with a rank-metric intersecting code must satisfy strong evasiveness properties. This connection allows us to derive new restrictions on the parameters of such codes and to show that the bound $n=2m-3$ can be attained only when $k=3$ and $m\ge 6$. More generally, we show that $n \leq 2m-\lfloor(k+4)/2\rfloor$. Moreover, we obtain a geometric characterization of these extremal codes in terms of scattered $\mathbb{F}_q$-subspaces of $\mathbb{F}_{q^m}^3$. As a consequence, the existence problem for $[2m-3,3,d]_{q^m/q}$ rank-metric intersecting codes is reduced to the existence of scattered subspaces of dimension $m+3$. Using known constructions of maximum scattered subspaces, we derive existence results when $m$ is even. Finally, we prove that $[6,3,3]_{q^5/q}$ rank-metric intersecting codes do not exist for any prime power $q$, thus resolving an open problem posed by Bartoli et al. in 2025.
On Ramsey number of $K_{2,n}$ versus even cycles
For graphs $G$ and $H$, the Ramsey number $R(G,H)$ is the smallest integer $N$ such that every graph $Γ$ on $N$ vertices contains $G$ or its complement $\overlineΓ$ contains $H$ as a subgraph. In graph Ramsey theory, the star-cycle Ramsey number is well-studied throughout the years. Whereas the Ramsey number of $K_{2,n}$ versus cycle is challenging to determine due to increased structural complexity. In this article, we have obtained an exact value of the Ramsey number $R(K_{2,n}, C_{m})$ for even $m\in [n, 2n-4008]$ and $n\geq 4516$. In particular, we show that $$R(K_{1,n}, C_{m})= R(K_{2,n}, C_{m})$$ for all even $m\in [n, 2n-4008]$ and $n\geq 4516$. This leads to an interesting question: For fixed $t$, does there exist $n_0(t)\in \mathbb{N}$ such that $R(K_{1,n}, C_m)=R(K_{t,n}, C_m)$ for all $n \geq n_0(t)$ and for a given range of even $m$?
