Dimensions of the irreducible representations of the symmetric and alternating group
Published • View PublicationBIB
We establish the existence of an irreducible representation of $A_n$ whose dimension does not occur as the dimension of an irreducible representation of $S_n$, and vice versa. This proves a conjecture by Tong-Viet. The main ingredient in the proof is a result on large prime factors in short intervals.

Product mixing in the alternating group
Published • View PublicationBIB
We prove the following one-sided product-mixing theorem for the alternating group: Given subsets $X,Y,Z \subset A_n$ of densities $α,β,γ$ satisfying $\min(αβ,αγ,βγ)\gg n^{-1}(\log n)^7$, there are at least $ (1+o(1))αβγ|A_n|^2$ solutions to $xy=z$ with $x\in X, y\in Y, z\in Z$. One consequence is that the largest product-free subset of $A_n$ has density at most $n^{-1/2}(\log n)^{7/2}$, which is best possible up to logarithms and improves the best previous bound of $n^{-1/3}$ due to Gowers. The main tools are a Fourier-analytic reduction noted by Ellis and Green to a problem just about the standard representation, a Brascamp--Lieb-type inequality for the symmetric group due to Carlen, Lieb, and Loss, and a concentration of measure result for rearrangements of inner products.

Graph Isomorphism in Quasipolynomial Time
Published • View PublicationBIB
We show that the Graph Isomorphism (GI) problem and the related problems of String Isomorphism (under group action) (SI) and Coset Intersection (CI) can be solved in quasipolynomial ($\exp((\log n)^{O(1)})$) time. The best previous bound for GI was $\exp(O(\sqrt{n\log n}))$, where $n$ is the number of vertices (Luks, 1983); for the other two problems, the bound was similar, $\exp(\tilde{O}(\sqrt{n}))$, where $n$ is the size of the permutation domain (Babai, 1983). The algorithm builds on Luks's SI framework and attacks the barrier configurations for Luks's algorithm by group theoretic "local certificates" and combinatorial canonical partitioning techniques. We show that in a well-defined sense, Johnson graphs are the only obstructions to effective canonical partitioning. Luks's barrier situation is characterized by a homomorphism φ that maps a given permutation group $G$ onto $S_k$ or $A_k$, the symmetric or alternating group of degree $k$, where $k$ is not too small. We say that an element $x$ in the permutation domain on which $G$ acts is affected by φ if the φ-image of the stabilizer of $x$ does not contain $A_k$. The affected/unaffected dichotomy underlies the core "local certificates" routine and is the central divide-and-conquer tool of the algorithm.
Abelian covers of alternating groups

Let $G=A_n$, a finite alternating group. We study the commuting graph of $G$ and establish, for all possible values of $n$ barring $13, 14, 17$ and $19$, whether or not the independence number is equal to the clique-covering number.

Impartial avoidance and achievement games for generating symmetric and alternating groups
Published in Int. Electron. J. Algebra 20, 70-85, 2016 • View PublicationBIB
We study two impartial games introduced by Anderson and Harary. Both games are played by two players who alternately select previously-unselected elements of a finite group. The first player who builds a generating set from the jointly-selected elements wins the first game. The first player who cannot select an element without building a generating set loses the second game. We determine the nim-numbers, and therefore the outcomes, of these games for symmetric and alternating groups.

Relationship between Conditional Diagnosability and 2-extra Connectivity of Symmetric Graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
The conditional diagnosability and the 2-extra connectivity are two important parameters to measure ability of diagnosing faulty processors and fault-tolerance in a multiprocessor system. The conditional diagnosability $t_c(G)$ of $G$ is the maximum number $t$ for which $G$ is conditionally $t$-diagnosable under the comparison model, while the 2-extra connectivity $κ_2(G)$ of a graph $G$ is the minimum number $k$ for which there is a vertex-cut $F$ with $|F|=k$ such that every component of $G-F$ has at least $3$ vertices. A quite natural problem is what is the relationship between the maximum and the minimum problem? This paper partially answer this problem by proving $t_c(G)=κ_2(G)$ for a regular graph $G$ with some acceptable conditions. As applications, the conditional diagnosability and the 2-extra connectivity are determined for some well-known classes of vertex-transitive graphs, including, star graphs, $(n,k)$-star graphs, alternating group networks, $(n,k)$-arrangement graphs, alternating group graphs, Cayley graphs obtained from transposition generating trees, bubble-sort graphs, $k$-ary $n$-cube networks and dual-cubes. Furthermore, many known results about these networks are obtained directly.

Infinitely many nonsolvable groups whose Cayley graphs are hamiltonian
Published • View PublicationBIB
This note shows there are infinitely many finite groups G, such that every connected Cayley graph on G has a hamiltonian cycle, and G is not solvable. Specifically, for every prime p that is congruent to 1, modulo 30, we show there is a hamiltonian cycle in every connected Cayley graph on the direct product of the cyclic group of order p with the alternating group A_5 on five letters.

Congruences for spin characters of the double covers of the symmetric and alternating groups
Published in Advances in Applied Mathematics 80 (2016), 114-130 • View PublicationBIB
Let $p$ be an odd prime. The bar partitions with sign and $p$-bar-core partitions with sign respectively label the spin characters and $p$-defect zero spin characters of the double cover of the symmetric group, and by restriction, those of the alternating group. The generating functions for these objects have been determined by J. Olsson. We study these functions from an arithmetic perspective, using classical analytic tools and elementary generating function manipulation to obtain many Ramanujan-like congruences.

Sign conjugacy classes of the alternating groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
A conjugacy class $C$ of a finite group $G$ is a sign conjugacy class if every irreducible character of $G$ takes value 0, 1 or -1 on $C$. In this paper we classify the sign conjugacy classes of alternating groups.

On a surface formed by randomly gluing together polygonal discs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Starting with a collection of $n$ oriented polygonal discs, with an even number $N$ of sides in total, we generate a random oriented surface by randomly matching the sides of discs and properly gluing them together. Encoding the surface in a random permutation $γ$ of $[N]$, we use the Fourier transform on $S_N$ to show that $γ$ is asymptotic to the permutation distributed uniformly on the alternating group $A_N$ ($A_N^c$ resp.) if $N-n$ and $N/2$ are of the same (opposite resp.) parity. We use this to prove a local central limit theorem for the number of vertices on the surface, whence for its Euler characteristic $χ$. We also show that with high probability the random surface consists of a single component, and thus has a well-defined genus $g=1-χ/2$, which is asymptotic to a Gaussian random variable, with mean $(N/2-n-\log N)/2$ and variance $(\log N)/2$.
Divisibility graph for symmetric and alternating groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $X$ be a non-empty set of positive integers and $X^*=X\setminus \{1\}$. The divisibility graph $D(X)$ has $X^*$ as the vertex set and there is an edge connecting $a$ and $b$ with $a, b\in X^*$ whenever $a$ divides $b$ or $b$ divides $a$. Let $X=cs~{G}$ be the set of conjugacy class sizes of a group $G$. In this case, we denote $D(cs~{G})$ by $D(G)$. In this paper we will find the number of connected components of $D(G)$ where $G$ is the symmetric group $S_n$ or is the alternating group $A_n$.

On the group of alternating colored permutations
Published • View PublicationBIB
The group of alternating colored permutations is the natural analogue of the classical alternating group, inside the wreath product $\mathbb{Z}_r \wr S_n$. We present a 'Coxeter-like' presentation for this group and compute the length function with respect to that presentation. Then, we present this group as a covering of $\mathbb{Z}_{\frac{r}{2}} \wr S_n$ and use this point of view to give another expression for the length function. We also use this covering to lift several known parameters of $\mathbb{Z}_{\frac{r}{2}} \wr S_n$ to the group of alternating colored permutations.

Double transitivity of Galois Groups in Schubert Calculus of Grassmannians
Published • View PublicationBIB
We investigate double transitivity of Galois groups in the classical Schubert calculus on Grassmannians. We show that all Schubert problems on Grassmannians of 2- and 3-planes have doubly transitive Galois groups, as do all Schubert problems involving only special Schubert conditions. We use these results to give a new proof that Schubert problems on Grassmannians of 2-planes have Galois groups that contain the alternating group. We also investigate the Galois group of every Schubert problem on Gr(4,8), finding that each Galois group either contains the alternating group or is an imprimitive permutation group and therefore fails to be doubly transitive. These imprimitive examples show that our results are the best possible general results on double transitivity of Schubert problems.

Standard and Weierstrass spin groups on hyperelliptic Riemann surfaces
We show that at any standard or Weierstrass point P on a hyperelliptic Riemann surface S equipped with a nonsingular even spin structure, we may attach a spin group G(P) in a natural way. All such spin groups are isomorphic to each other and to the alternating group A(g)<S(g). Moreover, for any two vertices of the same spin graph we construct a natural, unique isomorphism between the corresponding, mutually conjugate spin groups.
The automorphism group of a self-dual [72,36,16] code does not contain S_3, A_4, or D_8
Published • View PublicationBIB
A computer calculation with Magma shows that there is no extremal self-dual binary code C of length 72, whose automorphism group contains the symmetric group of degree 3, the alternating group of degree 4 or the dihedral group of order 8. Combining this with the known results in the literature one obtains that Aut(C) has order at most 5 or isomorphic to the elementary abelian group of order 8.

A new proof for the Erdős-Ko-Rado Theorem for the alternating group
Published • View PublicationBIB
A subset $S$ of the alternating group on $n$ points is {\it intersecting} if for any pair of permutations $π,σ$ in $S$, there is an element $i\in \{1,\dots,n\}$ such that $π(i)=σ(i)$. We prove that if $S$ is intersecting, then $|S|\leq \frac{(n-1)!}{2}$. Also, we prove that if $n \geq 5$, then the only sets $S$ that meet this bound are the cosets of the stabilizer of a point of $\{1,\dots,n\}$.
Algebraic properties of generalized Rijndael-like ciphers
Published • View PublicationBIB
We provide conditions under which the set of Rijndael functions considered as permutations of the state space and based on operations of the finite field $\GF (p^k)$ ($p\geq 2$ a prime number) is not closed under functional composition. These conditions justify using a sequential multiple encryption to strengthen the AES (Rijndael block cipher with specific block sizes) in case AES became practically insecure. In Sparr and Wernsdorf (2008), R. Sparr and R. Wernsdorf provided conditions under which the group generated by the Rijndael-like round functions based on operations of the finite field $\GF (2^k)$ is equal to the alternating group on the state space. In this paper we provide conditions under which the group generated by the Rijndael-like round functions based on operations of the finite field $\GF (p^k)$ ($p\geq 2$) is equal to the symmetric group or the alternating group on the state space.
On the Automorphism Group of a Binary Self-dual [120, 60, 24] Code
Published in Applicable Algebra in Engineering, Communication and Computing (2013) • View PublicationBIB
We prove that an automorphism of order 3 of a putative binary self-dual [120, 60, 24] code C has no fixed points. Moreover, the order of the automorphism group of C divides 2^a.3.5.7.19.23.29 where a is a nonegative integer. Automorphisms of odd composite order r may occur only for r=15, 57 or r=115 with corresponding cycle structures 15-(0,0,8;0), 57-(2,0,2;0) or 115-(1,0,1;0), respectively. In case that all involutions act fixed point freely we have |Aut(C)|<=920, and Aut(C) is solvable if it contains an element of prime order p>=7. Moreover, the alternating group A_5 is the only non-abelian composition factor which may occur.
Galois groups of Schubert problems of lines are at least alternating
Published • View PublicationBIB
We show that the Galois group of any Schubert problem involving lines in projective space contains the alternating group. This constitutes the largest family of enumerative problems whose Galois groups have been largely determined. Using a criterion of Vakil and a special position argument due to Schubert, our result follows from a particular inequality among Kostka numbers of two-rowed tableaux. In most cases, a combinatorial injection proves the inequality. For the remaining cases, we use the Weyl integral formula to obtain an integral formula for these Kostka numbers. This rewrites the inequality as an integral, which we estimate to establish the inequality.
