Distinguishing number of Urysohn metric spaces
Published • View PublicationBIB
The distinguishing number of a structure is the smallest size of a partition of its elements so that only the trivial automorphism of the structure preserves each cell of the partition. We show that for any countable subset of the positive real numbers, the corresponding countable homogeneous Urysohn metric space, when it exists, has distinguishing number 2 or the distinguishing number is infinite. While it is known that a sufficiently large finite primitive structure has distinguishing number 2, unless its automorphism group is the full symmetric group or alternating group, the infinite case is open and these countable Urysohn metric spaces provide further confirmation toward the conjecture that all primitive homogeneous countably infinite structures have distinguishing number 2 or else the distinguishing number is infinite.

String C-group representations of alternating groups

We prove that for any integer $n\geq 12$, and for every $r$ in the interval $[3, \ldots, \lfloor (n-1)/2\rfloor]$, the group $A_n$ has a string C-group representation of rank $r$ therefore showing that the only alternating group whose set of ranks is not an interval is $A_{11}$.

The generalized connectivity of some regular graphs
The generalized $k$-connectivity $κ_{k}(G)$ of a graph $G$ is a parameter that can measure the reliability of a network $G$ to connect any $k$ vertices in $G$, which is proved to be NP-complete for a general graph $G$. Let $S\subseteq V(G)$ and $κ_{G}(S)$ denote the maximum number $r$ of edge-disjoint trees $T_{1}, T_{2}, \cdots, T_{r}$ in $G$ such that $V(T_{i})\bigcap V(T_{j})=S$ for any $i, j \in \{1, 2, \cdots, r\}$ and $i\neq j$. For an integer $k$ with $2\leq k\leq n$, the {\em generalized $k$-connectivity} of a graph $G$ is defined as $κ_{k}(G)= min\{κ_{G}(S)|S\subseteq V(G)$ and $|S|=k\}$. In this paper, we study the generalized $3$-connectivity of some general $m$-regular and $m$-connected graphs $G_{n}$ constructed recursively and obtain that $κ_{3}(G_{n})=m-1$, which attains the upper bound of $κ_{3}(G)$ [Discrete Mathematics 310 (2010) 2147-2163] given by Li {\em et al.} for $G=G_{n}$. As applications of the main result, the generalized $3$-connectivity of many famous networks such as the alternating group graph $AG_{n}$, the $k$-ary $n$-cube $Q_{n}^{k}$, the split-star network $S_{n}^{2}$ and the bubble-sort-star graph $BS_{n}$ etc. can be obtained directly.
The 4-Component Connectivity of Alternating Group Networks
Published in Theoretical Computer Science, Vol. 766, (2019) pp. 38-45 • View PublicationBIB
The $\ell$-component connectivity (or $\ell$-connectivity for short) of a graph $G$, denoted by $κ_\ell(G)$, is the minimum number of vertices whose removal from $G$ results in a disconnected graph with at least $\ell$ components or a graph with fewer than $\ell$ vertices. This generalization is a natural extension of the classical connectivity defined in term of minimum vertex-cut. As an application, the $\ell$-connectivity can be used to assess the vulnerability of a graph corresponding to the underlying topology of an interconnection network, and thus is an important issue for reliability and fault tolerance of the network. So far, only a little knowledge of results have been known on $\ell$-connectivity for particular classes of graphs and small $\ell$'s. In a previous work, we studied the $\ell$-connectivity on $n$-dimensional alternating group networks $AN_n$ and obtained the result $κ_3(AN_n)=2n-3$ for $n\geqslant 4$. In this sequel, we continue the work and show that $κ_4(AN_n)=3n-6$ for $n\geqslant 4$.

Remarks on singular Cayley graphs and vanishing elements of simple groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $Γ$ be a finite graph and let $A(Γ)$ be its adjacency matrix. Then $Γ$ is {\it singular} if $A(Γ)$ is singular. The singularity of graphs is of certain interest in graph theory and algebraic combinatorics. Here we investigate this problem for Cayley graphs ${\rm Cay}(G,H)$ when $G$ is a finite group and when the connecting set $H$ is a union of conjugacy classes of $G.$ In this situation the singularity problem reduces to finding an irreducible character $χ$ of $G$ for which $\sum_{h\in H}\,χ(h)=0.$ At this stage we focus on the case when $H$ is a single conjugacy class $h^G$ of $G.$ Here the above equality is equivalent to $χ(h)=0$. Much is known in this situation, with essential information coming from the block theory of representations of finite groups. An element $h\in G$ is called vanishing if $χ(h)=0$ for some irreducible character $χ$ of $G.$ We study vanishing elements mainly in finite simple groups and in alternating groups in particular. We suggest some approaches for constructing singular Cayley graphs.

A Poset Structure on the Alternating Group Generated by 3-Cycles
Published in Algebraic Combinatorics 2 (2019), 1285-1310 • View PublicationBIB
We investigate the poset structure on the alternating group that arises when the latter is generated by 3-cycles. We study intervals in this poset and give several enumerative results, as well as a complete description of the orbits of the Hurwitz action on maximal chains. Our motivating example is the well-studied absolute order arising when the symmetric group is generated by transpositions, i.e. 2-cycles, and we compare our results to this case along the way. In particular, noncrossing partitions arise naturally in both settings.

Lifting a prescribed group of automorphisms of graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we are interested in lifting a prescribed group of automorphisms of a finite graph via regular covering projections. Here we describe with an example the problems we address and refer to the introductory section for the correct statements of our results. Let $P$ be the Petersen graph, say, and let $\wp:\tilde{P}\to P$ be a regular covering projection. With the current covering machinery, it is straightforward to find $\wp$ with the property that every subgroup of $\Aut(P)$ lifts via $\wp$. However, for constructing peculiar examples and in applications, this is usually not enough. Sometimes it is important, given a subgroup $G$ of $\Aut(P)$, to find $\wp$ along which $G$ lifts but no further automorphism of $P$ does. For instance, in this concrete example, it is interesting to find a covering of the Petersen graph lifting the alternating group $A_5$ but not the whole symmetric group $S_5$. (Recall that $\Aut(P)\cong S_5$.) Some other time it is important, given a subgroup $G$ of $\Aut(P)$, to find $\wp$ with the property that $\Aut(\tilde{P})$ is the lift of $G$. Typically, it is desirable to find $\wp$ satisfying both conditions. In a very broad sense, this might remind wallpaper patterns on surfaces: the group of symmetries of the dodecahedron is $S_5$, and there is a nice colouring of the dodecahedron (found also by Escher) whose group of symmetries is just $A_5$. In this paper, we address this problem in full generality.

The second largest eigenvalues of some Cayley graphs on alternating groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $A_n$ denote the alternating group of degree $n$ with $n\geq 3$. The alternating group graph $AG_n$, extended alternating group graph $EAG_n$ and complete alternating group graph $CAG_n$ are the Cayley graphs $\mathrm{Cay}(A_n,T_1)$, $\mathrm{Cay}(A_n,T_2)$ and $\mathrm{Cay}(A_n,T_3)$, respectively, where $T_1=\{(1,2,i),(1,i,2)\mid 3\leq i\leq n\}$, $T_2=\{(1,i,j),(1,j,i)\mid 2\leq i<j\leq n\}$ and $T_3=\{(i,j,k),(i,k,j)\mid 1\leq i<j<k\leq n\}$. In this paper, we determine the second largest eigenvalues of $AG_n$, $EAG_n$ and $CAG_n$.

Compositions of Functions and Permutations Specified by Minimal Reaction Systems
Published • View PublicationBIB
This paper studies mathematical properties of reaction systems that was introduced by Enrenfeucht and Rozenberg as computational models inspired by biochemical reaction in the living cells. In particular, we continue the study on the generative power of functions specified by minimal reaction systems under composition initiated by Salomaa. Allowing degenerate reaction systems, functions specified by minimal reaction systems over a quarternary alphabet that are permutations generate the alternating group on the power set of the background set.

Non-Nudgable Subgroups of Permutations
Published • View PublicationBIB
Motivated by a problem from behavioral economics, we study subgroups of permutation groups that have a certain strong symmetry. Given a fixed permutation, consider the set of all permutations with disjoint inversion sets. The group is called non-nudgable, if the cardinality of this set always remains the same when replacing the initial permutation with its inverse. It is called nudgable otherwise. We show that all full permutation groups, standard dihedral groups, half of the alternating groups, and any abelian subgroup are non-nudgable. In the right probabilistic sense, it is thus quite likely that a randomly generated subgroup is non-nudgable. However, the other half of the alternating groups are nudgable. We also construct a smallest possible nudgable group, a 6-element subgroup of the permutation group on 4 elements.

Critical classes, Kronecker products of spin characters, and the Saxl conjecture
Published • View PublicationBIB
Highlighting the use of critical classes, we consider constituents in Kronecker products, in particular of spin characters of the double covers of the symmetric and alternating groups. We apply results from the spin case to find constituents in Kronecker products of characters of the symmetric groups. Via this tool, we make progress on the Saxl conjecture; this claims that for a triangular number $n$, the square of the irreducible character of the symmetric group $S_n$ labelled by the staircase contains all irreducible characters of $S_n$ as constituents. We find a large number of constituents in this square which were not detected by other methods. Moreover, the investigation of Kronecker products of spin characters inspires a spin variant of Saxl's conjecture.
Equal relation between the extra connectivity and pessimistic diagnosability for some regular graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Extra connectivity and the pessimistic diagnosis are two crucial subjects for a multiprocessor system's ability to tolerate and diagnose faulty processor. The pessimistic diagnosis strategy is a classic strategy based on the PMC model in which isolates all faulty vertices within a set containing at most one fault-free vertex. In this paper, the result that the pessimistic diagnosability $t_p(G)$ equals the extra connectivity $κ_{1}(G)$ of a regular graph $G$ under some conditions are shown. Furthermore, the following new results are gotten: the pessimistic diagnosability $t_p(S_n^2)=4n-9$ for split-star networks $S_n^2$, $t_p(Γ_n)=2n-4$ for Cayley graphs generated by transposition trees $Γ_n$, $t_p(Γ_{n}(Δ))=4n-11$ for Cayley graph generated by the $2$-tree $Γ_{n}(Δ)$, $t_{p}(BP_n)=2n-2$ for the burnt pancake networks $BP_n$. As corollaries, the known results about the extra connectivity and the pessimistic diagnosability of many famous networks including the alternating group graphs, the alternating group networks, BC networks, the $k$-ary $n$-cube networks etc. are obtained directly.

A study of the Structural Properties of finite $G$-graphs and their Characterisation
The $G$-graph $Γ(G,S)$ is a graph from the group $G$ generated by $S\subseteq G$, where the vertices are the right cosets of the cyclic subgroups $\langle s \rangle, s\in S$ with $k$-edges between two distinct cosets if there is an intersection of $k$ elements. In this thesis, after presenting some important properties of $G$-graphs, we show how the $G$-graph depends on the generating set of the group. We give the $G$-graphs of the symmetric group, alternating group and the semi-dihedral group with respect to various generating sets. We give a characterisation of finite $G$-graphs; in the general case and a bipartite case. Using these characterisations, we give several classes of graphs that are $G$-graphs. For instance, we consider the Turán graphs, the platonic graphs and biregular graphs such as the Levi graphs of geometric configurations. We emphasis the structural properties of $G$-graphs and their relations to the group $G$ and the generating set $S$. As preliminary results for further studies, we give the adjacency matrix and spectrum of various finite $G$-graphs. As an application, we compute the energy of these graphs. We also present some preliminary results on infinite $G$-graphs where we consider the $G$-graphs of the infinite group $SL_2(\mathbb{Z})$ and an infinite non-Abelian matrix group.

Highest rank of a polytope for $A_n$

Automorphism group of the complete alternating group graph
Published in Applied Mathematics and Computation, 2017, 314: 58-64 • View PublicationBIB
Let $S_n$ and $A_n$ denote the symmetric group and alternating group of degree $n$ with $n\geq 3$, respectively. Let $S$ be the set of all $3$-cycles in $S_n$. The \emph{complete alternating group graph}, denoted by $CAG_n$, is defined as the Cayley graph $\mathrm{Cay}(A_n,S)$ on $A_n$ with respect to $S$. In this paper, we show that $CAG_n$ ($n\geq 4$) is not a normal Cayley graph. Furthermore, the automorphism group of $CAG_n$ for $n\geq 5$ is obtained, which equals to $\mathrm{Aut}(CAG_n)=(R(A_n)\rtimes \mathrm{Inn}(S_n))\rtimes \mathbb{Z}_2\cong (A_n\rtimes S_n)\rtimes \mathbb{Z}_2$, where $R(A_n)$ is the right regular representation of $A_n$, $\mathrm{Inn}(S_n)$ is the inner automorphism group of $S_n$, and $\mathbb{Z}_2=\langle h\rangle$, where $h$ is the map $α\mapstoα^{-1}$ ($\forall α\in A_n$).

Dimensions of irreducible modules for partition algebras and tensor power multiplicities for symmetric and alternating groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
The partition algebra $\mathsf{P}_k(n)$ and the symmetric group $\mathsf{S}_n$ are in Schur-Weyl duality on the $k$-fold tensor power $\mathsf{M}_n^{\otimes k}$ of the permutation module $\mathsf{M}_n$ of $\mathsf{S}_n$, so there is a surjection $\mathsf{P}_k(n) \to \mathsf{Z}_k(n) := \mathsf{End}_{\mathsf{S}_n}(\mathsf{M}_n^{\otimes k}),$ which is an isomorphism when $n \ge 2k$. We prove a dimension formula for the irreducible modules of the centralizer algebra $\mathsf{Z}_k(n)$ in terms of Stirling numbers of the second kind. Via Schur-Weyl duality, these dimensions equal the multiplicities of the irreducible $\mathsf{S}_n$-modules in $\mathsf{M}_n^{\otimes k}$. Our dimension expressions hold for any $n \geq 1$ and $k\ge0$. Our methods are based on an analog of Frobenius reciprocity that we show holds for the centralizer algebras of arbitrary finite groups and their subgroups acting on a finite-dimensional module. This enables us to generalize the above result to various analogs of the partition algebra including the centralizer algebra for the alternating group acting on $\mathsf{M}_n^{\otimes k}$ and the quasi-partition algebra corresponding to tensor powers of the reflection representation of $\mathsf{S}_n$.

An easy upper bound for Ramsey numbers
It is observed that the conjugacy growth series of the infinite finitary symmetric group with respect to the generating set of transpositions is the generating series of the partition function. Other conjugacy growth series are computed, for other generating sets, for restricted permutational wreath products of finite groups by the finitary symmetric group, and for alternating groups. Similar methods are used to compute usual growth polynomials and conjugacy growth polynomials for finite symmetric groups and alternating groups, with respect to various generating sets of transpositions. Computations suggest a class of finite graphs, that we call partition-complete, which generalizes the class of semi-hamiltonian graphs, and which is of independent interest. Numerical evidences indicate that the coefficients of a series related to the finitary alternating group seem to satisfy congruence relations reminiscent of Ramanujan's congruences for the partition function.

Perfect snake-in-the-box codes for rank modulation
Published • View PublicationBIB
For odd n, the alternating group on n elements is generated by the permutations that jump an element from any odd position to position 1. We prove Hamiltonicity of the associated directed Cayley graph for all odd n not equal to 5. (A result of Rankin implies that the graph is not Hamiltonian for n=5.) This solves a problem arising in rank modulation schemes for flash memory. Our result disproves a conjecture of Horovitz and Etzion, and proves another conjecture of Yehezkeally and Schwartz.
