The diameter of caterpillar associahedra
The caterpillar associahedron $\mathcal{A}(G)$ is a polytope arising from the rotation graph of search trees on a caterpillar tree $G$, generalizing the rotation graph of binary search trees (BSTs) and thus the conventional associahedron. We show that the diameter of $\mathcal{A}(G)$ is $Θ(n + m \cdot (H+1))$, where $n$ is the number of vertices, $m$ is the number of leaves, and $H$ is the entropy of the leaf distribution of $G$.
Our proofs reveal a strong connection between caterpillar associahedra and searching in BSTs. We prove the lower bound using Wilber's first lower bound for dynamic BSTs, and the upper bound by reducing the problem to searching in static BSTs.

For each poset $P$, we construct a polytope $A(P)$ called the $P$-associahedron. Similarly to the case of graph associahedra, the faces of $A(P)$ correspond to certain nested collections of subsets of $P$. The Stasheff associahedron is a compactification of the configuration space of $n$ points on a line, and we recover $A(P)$ as an analogous compactification of the space of order-preserving maps $P\to\mathbb{R}$. Motivated by the study of totally nonnegative critical varieties in the Grassmannian, we introduce affine poset cyclohedra and realize these polytopes as compactifications of configuration spaces of $n$ points on a circle. For particular choices of (affine) posets, we obtain associahedra, cyclohedra, permutohedra, and type B permutohedra as special cases.

Kupavskii, Volostnov, and Yarovikov have recently shown that any set of $n$ points in general position in the plane has at least as many (partial) triangulations as the convex $n$-gon. We generalize this in two directions: we show that regular triangulations are enough, and we extend the result to all regular subdivisions, graded by the dimension of their corresponding face in the secondary polytope.

We give the facet description of the deformation cones of graph associahedra and nestohedra, generalizing the classical parametrization of the family of deformed permutahedra by the cone of submodular functions. When the underlying building set is made of intervals, this leads in particular to the construction of kinematic nestohedra generalizing the kinematic associahedra that recently appeared in the theory of scattering amplitudes.

Taking a representation-theoretic viewpoint, we construct a continuous associahedron motivated by the realization of the generalized associahedron in the physical setting. We show that our associahedron shares important properties with the generalized associahedron of type A. Our continuous associahedron is convex and manifests a cluster theory: the points which correspond to the clusters are on its boundary, and the edges that correspond to mutations are given by intersections of hyperplanes. This requires development of several methods that are continuous analogues of discrete methods. We conclude the paper by showing that there is a sequence of embeddings of type A generalized associahedra into our continuous associahedron.

We calculate the cluster modular groups of affine and doubly extended typecluster algebras in a uniform way by introducing a new family of quivers. We use this uniformdescription to construct a natural finite quotient of the cluster complex of each affine anddoubly extended cluster algebra. Using this construction, we introduce the notion of affineand doubly extended generalized associahedra, and count their facets.

Graph associahedra are generalized permutohedra arising as special cases of nestohedra and hypergraphic polytopes. The graph associahedron of a graph $G$ encodes the combinatorics of search trees on $G$, defined recursively by a root $r$ together with search trees on each of the connected components of $G-r$. In particular, the skeleton of the graph associahedron is the rotation graph of those search trees. We investigate the diameter of graph associahedra as a function of some graph parameters. We give a tight bound of $Θ(m)$ on the diameter of trivially perfect graph associahedra on $m$ edges. We consider the maximum diameter of associahedra of graphs on $n$ vertices and of given tree-depth, treewidth, or pathwidth, and give lower and upper bounds as a function of these parameters. We also prove that the maximum diameter of associahedra of graphs of pathwidth two is $Θ(n\log n)$. Finally, we give the exact diameter of the associahedra of complete split and of unbalanced complete bipartite graphs.
Combinatorial generation via permutation languages. IV. Elimination trees

An elimination tree for a connected graph $G$ is a rooted tree on the vertices of $G$ obtained by choosing a root $x$ and recursing on the connected components of $G-x$ to produce the subtrees of $x$. Elimination trees appear in many guises in computer science and discrete mathematics, and they encode many interesting combinatorial objects, such as bitstrings, permutations and binary trees. We apply the recent Hartung-Hoang-Mütze-Williams combinatorial generation framework to elimination trees, and prove that all elimination trees for a chordal graph $G$ can be generated by tree rotations using a simple greedy algorithm. This yields a short proof for the existence of Hamilton paths on graph associahedra of chordal graphs. Graph associahedra are a general class of high-dimensional polytopes introduced by Carr, Devadoss, and Postnikov, whose vertices correspond to elimination trees and whose edges correspond to tree rotations. As special cases of our results, we recover several classical Gray codes for bitstrings, permutations and binary trees, and we obtain a new Gray code for partial permutations. Our algorithm for generating all elimination trees for a chordal graph $G$ can be implemented in time $\mathcal{O}(σ)$ on average per generated elimination tree, where $σ=σ(G)$ denotes the maximum number of edges of an induced star in $G$. If $G$ is a tree, we improve this to a loopless algorithm running in time $\mathcal{O}(1)$ per generated elimination tree. We also prove that our algorithm produces a Hamilton cycle on the graph associahedron of $G$, rather than just Hamilton path, if the graph $G$ is chordal and 2-connected. Moreover, our algorithm characterizes chordality, i.e., it computes a Hamilton path on the graph associahedron of $G$ if and only if $G$ is chordal.
Planarity in Generalized Scattering Amplitudes: PK Polytope, Generalized Root Systems and Worldsheet Associahedra
In this paper we study the role of planarity in generalized scattering amplitudes, through several closely interacting structures in combinatorics, algebraic and tropical geometry.
The generalized biadjoint scalar amplitude, introduced recently by Cachazo-Early-Guevara-Mizera (CEGM), is a rational function of homogeneous degree $-(k-1)(n-k-1)$ in $\binom{n}{k}-n$ independent variables; its poles can be constructed directly from the rays of the positive tropical Grassmannian.
We introduce for each pair of integers $(k,n)$ with $2\le k\le n-2$ a system of generalized positive roots which arises as a specialization of the planar basis of kinematic invariants. We prove that the higher root polytope $\mathcal{R}^{(k)}_{n-k}$ has volume the k-dimensional Catalan number $C^{(k)}_{n-k}$, via a flag unimodular triangulation into simplices, in bijection with noncrossing collections of $k$-element subsets. We also give a bijection between certain positroidal subdivisions, called tripods, of the hypersimplex $Δ_{3,n}$ and noncrossing pairs of 3-element subsets that are not weakly separated.
We show that the facets of the Planar Kinematics (PK) polytope, introduced recently by Cachazo and the author, are exactly the $\binom{n}{k}-n$ generalized positive roots. We show that the PK specialization of the generalized biadjoint amplitude evaluates to $C^{(k)}_{n-k}$.
Looking forward, we give defining equations and conjecture explicit solutions using $(\mathbb{CP}^{n-k-1})^{\times (k-1)}$ via a notion of compatibility degree for noncrossing collections, for a two parameter family of generalized worldsheet associahedra $\mathcal{W}^+_{k,n}$. These specialize when $k=2$ to a certain dihedrally invariant partial compactification of the configuration space $M_{0,n}$ of $n$ distinct points in $\mathbb{CP}^{1}$. Many detailed examples are given throughout to motivate future work.

For any northeast path $ν$, we define two bivariate polynomials associated with the $ν$-associahedron: the $F$- and the $H$-triangle. We prove combinatorially that we can obtain one from the other by an invertible transformation of variables. These polynomials generalize the classical $F$- and $H$-triangles of F.~Chapoton in type $A$. Our proof is completely new and has the advantage of providing a combinatorial explanation of the relation between the $F$- and $H$-triangle.

Elaborating on works by Abouzaid and Mescher, we prove that for a Morse function on a smooth compact manifold, its Morse cochain complex can be endowed with an $ΩB As$-algebra structure by counting moduli spaces of perturbed Morse gradient trees. This rich structure descends to its already known $A_\infty$-algebra structure. We then introduce the notion of $ΩB As$-morphism between two $ΩB As$-algebras and prove that given two Morse functions, one can construct an $ΩB As$-morphism between their associated $ΩB As$-algebras by counting moduli spaces of two-colored perturbed Morse gradient trees. This morphism induces a standard $A_\infty$-morphism between the induced $A_\infty$-algebras. We work with integer coefficients, and provide to this extent a detailed account on the sign conventions for $A_\infty$ (resp. $ΩB As$)-algebras and $A_\infty$ (resp. $ΩB As$)-morphisms, using polytopes (resp. moduli spaces) which explicitly realize the dg-operadic objects encoding them. Our proofs also involve showing at the level of polytopes that an $ΩB As$-morphism between $ΩB As$-algebras naturally induces an $A_\infty$-morphism between $A_\infty$-algebras. This paper comes in particular with a short survey on operads, $A_\infty$-algebras and $A_\infty$-morphisms, the associahedra and the multiplihedra. All the details on transversality, gluing maps, signs and orientations for the moduli spaces defining the algebraic structures on the Morse cochains are thorougly carried out. It moreover lays the basis for a second article in which we solve the problem of finding a satisfactory homotopic notion of higher morphisms between $A_\infty$-algebras and between $ΩB As$-algebras, and show how this higher algebra of $A_\infty$ and $ΩB As$-algebras naturally arises in the context of Morse theory.
Cellular chains on freehedra and operadic pairs
The paper is devoted to explaining the operadic meaning of freehedra, a family of polytopes originally defined to study free loop spaces. We introduce the notion of operadic pairs and algebras over them. Cellular chains on Stasheff associahedra and Stasheff multiplihedra assemble into a two-colored operadic pair that governs $A_\infty$-algebras and $A_\infty$-modules over them, with maps that are $A_\infty$ in both colors. An important quotient of this operadic pair is given by cellular chains on cubes and freehedra.

Given a graph G, the graph associahedron is a simple convex polytope whose face poset is based on the connected subgraphs of G. With the additional assignment of a color palette, we define the colorful graph associahedron, show it to be a collection of simple abstract polytopes, and explore its properties.
Associahedra, cyclohedra and inversion of power series
We introduce the Hopf monoid of sets of cycles and paths, which contains the Faà di Bruno Hopf monoid as a submonoid. We give cancellation-free and grouping-free formulas for its antipode, one in terms of tubings and one in terms of \emph{pointed} noncrossing partitions. We provide an explicit description of the group of characters of this Hopf monoid in terms of pairs of power series. Using graph associahedra, we relate paths and cycles to associahedra and cyclohedra, respectively. We give formulas for inversion in the group of characters in terms of the faces of these polytopes.
Polypositroids

We initiate the study of a class of polytopes, which we coin polypositroids, defined to be those polytopes that are simultaneously generalized permutohedra (or polymatroids) and alcoved polytopes. Whereas positroids are the matroids arising from the totally nonnegative Grassmannian, polypositroids are "positive" polymatroids. We parametrize polypositroids using Coxeter necklaces and balanced graphs, and describe the cone of polypositroids by extremal rays and facet inequalities. We introduce a notion of (W,c)-polypositroid for a finite Weyl group W and a choice of Coxeter element c. We connect the theory of (W,c)-polypositroids to cluster algebras of finite type and to generalized associahedra. We discuss membranes, which are certain triangulated 2-dimensional surfaces inside polypositroids. Membranes extend the notion of plabic graphs from positroids to polypositroids.
Hochschild lattices and shuffle lattices

In his study of a Hochschild complex arising in connection with the free loop fibration, S. Saneblidze defined the freehedron, a certain polytope constructed via a truncation process from the hypercube. It was recently conjectured by F. Chapoton and proven by C. Combe that a certain orientation of the $1$-skeleton of the freehedron carries a lattice structure. The resulting lattice was dubbed the Hochschild lattice and is congruence uniform and extremal. These properties allow for the definition of three associated structures: the Galois graph, the canonical join complex and the core label order. In this article, we study and characterize these structures. We exhibit an isomorphism from the core label order of the Hochschild lattice to a particular shuffle lattice of C. Greene. We also uncover an enumerative connection between the core label order of the Hochschild lattice, a certain order extension of its poset of irreducibles and the freehedron. These connections nicely parallel the situation surrounding the better-known Tamari lattices, noncrossing partition lattices and associahedra.

We continue the study of open associahedra associated with bi-color scattering amplitudes initiated in arXiv:1912.08307. We focus on the facet geometries of the open associahedra, uncovering many new phenomena such as fiber-product geometries. We then provide novel recursion procedures for calculating the canonical form of open associahedra, generalizing recursion relations for bounded polytopes to unbounded polytopes.
Schroder combinatorics and $ν$-associahedra
We study $ν$-Schröder paths, which are Schröder paths which stay weakly above a given lattice path $ν$. Some classical bijective and enumerative results are extended to the $ν$-setting, including the relationship between small and large Schröder paths. We introduce two posets of $ν$-Schröder objects, namely $ν$-Schröder paths and trees, and show that they are isomorphic to the face poset of the $ν$-associahedron $A_ν$ introduced by Ceballos, Padrol and Sarmiento. A consequence of our results is that the $i$-dimensional faces of $A_ν$ are indexed by $ν$-Schröder paths with $i$ diagonal steps, and we obtain a closed-form expression for these Schröder numbers in the special case when $ν$ is a `rational' lattice path. Using our new description of the face poset of $A_ν$, we apply discrete Morse theory to show that $A_ν$ is contractible. This yields one of two proofs presented for the fact that the Euler characteristic of $A_ν$ is one. A second proof of this is obtained via a formula for the $ν$-Narayana polynomial in terms of $ν$-Schröder numbers.

We give an explicit subword complex description of the generators of the type cone of the g-vector fan of a finite type cluster algebra with acyclic initial seed. This yields in particular a description of the Newton polytopes of the F-polynomials in terms of subword complexes as conjectured by S. Brodsky and the third author. We then show that the cluster complex is combinatorially isomorphic to the totally positive part of the tropicalization of the cluster variety as conjectured by D. Speyer and L. Williams.

Stringy canonical forms are a class of integrals that provide $α'$-deformations of the canonical form of any polytopes. For generalized associahedra of finite-type cluster algebra, there exist completely rigid stringy integrals, whose configuration spaces are the so-called binary geometries, and for classical types are associated with (generalized) scattering of particles and strings. In this paper we propose a large class of rigid stringy canonical forms for another class of polytopes, generalized permutohedra, which also include associahedra and cyclohedra as special cases (type $A_n$ and $B_n$ generalized associahedra). Remarkably, we find that the configuration spaces of such integrals are also binary geometries, which were suspected to exist for generalized associahedra only. For any generalized permutohedron that can be written as Minkowski sum of coordinate simplices, we show that its rigid stringy integral factorizes into products of lower integrals for massless poles at finite $α'$, and the configuration space is binary although the $u$ equations take a more general form than those "perfect" ones for cluster cases. Moreover, we provide an infinite class of examples obtained by degenerations of type $A_n$ and $B_n$ integrals, which have perfect $u$ equations as well. Our results provide yet another family of generalizations of the usual string integral and moduli space, whose physical interpretations remain to be explored.
