Three-color Ramsey number of an odd cycle versus bipartite graphs with small bandwidth
Published • View PublicationBIB
A graph $\mathcal{H}=(W,E_\mathcal{H})$ is said to have {\em bandwidth} at most $b$ if there exists a labeling of $W$ as $w_1,w_2,\dots,w_n$ such that $|i-j|\leq b$ for every edge $w_iw_j\in E_\mathcal{H}$. We say that $\mathcal{H}$ is a {\em balanced $(β,Δ)$-graph} if it is a bipartite graph with bandwidth at most $β|W|$ and maximum degree at most $Δ$, and it also has a proper 2-coloring $χ:W\rightarrow[2]$ such that $||χ^{-1}(1)|-|χ^{-1}(2)||\leqβ|χ^{-1}(2)|$. In this paper, we prove that for every $γ>0$ and every natural number $Δ$, there exists a constant $β>0$ such that for every balanced $(β,Δ)$-graph $\mathcal{H}$ on $n$ vertices we have $$R(\mathcal{H}, \mathcal{H}, C_n) \leq (3+γ)n$$ for all sufficiently large odd $n$. The upper bound is sharp for several classes of graphs. Let $θ_{n,t}$ be the graph consisting of $t$ internally disjoint paths of length $n$ all sharing the same endpoints. As a corollary, for each fixed $t\geq 1$, $R(θ_{n, t},θ_{n, t}, C_{nt+λ})=(3t+o(1))n,$ where $λ=0$ if $nt$ is odd and $λ=1$ if $nt$ is even. In particular, we have $R(C_{2n},C_{2n}, C_{2n+1})=(6+o(1))n$, which is a special case of a result of Figaj and Łuczak (2018).

On Color Isomorphic Pairs in Proper Edge Colourings of Complete Graphs
Following the recent paper which initiated the study of colour isomorphism problems for complete graphs, we obtain upper bounds for $f_2(n,H)$ for a family of graphs $H$ obtained as the $K_0$-th rooted power of a balanced rooted tree for some sufficiently large $K_0$. The proof uses the random polynomial method of Bukh. We also obtain matching lower bounds for $1$-subdivisions of the complete bipartite graph.

A note on large induced subgraphs with prescribed residues in bipartite graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
It was proved by Scott that for every $k\ge2$, there exists a constant $c(k)>0$ such that for every bipartite $n$-vertex graph $G$ without isolated vertices, there exists an induced subgraph $H$ of order at least $c(k)n$ such that $\textrm{deg}_H(v) \equiv 1\pmod{k}$ for each $v \in H$. Scott conjectured that $c(k) = Ω(1/k)$, which would be tight up to the multiplicative constant. We confirm this conjecture.
Preference Swaps for the Stable Matching Problem
Published • View PublicationBIB
An instance $I$ of the Stable Matching Problem (SMP) is given by a bipartite graph with a preference list of neighbors for every vertex. A swap in $I$ is the exchange of two consecutive vertices in a preference list. A swap can be viewed as a smallest perturbation of $I$. Boehmer et al. (2021) designed a polynomial-time algorithm to find the minimum number of swaps required to turn a given maximal matching into a stable matching. We generalize this result to the many-to-many version of SMP. We do so first by introducing a new representation of SMP as an extended bipartite graph and subsequently by reducing the problem to submodular minimization. It is a natural problem to establish the computational complexity of deciding whether at most $k$ swaps are enough to turn $I$ into an instance where one of the maximum matchings is stable. Using a hardness result of Gupta et al. (2020), we prove that this problem is NP-hard and, moreover, this problem parameterised by $k$ is W[1]-hard. We also obtain a lower bound on the running time for solving the problem using the Exponential Time Hypothesis.

Some exact results of the generalized Turán numbers for paths
Published • View PublicationBIB
For graphs $H$ and $F$ with chromatic number $χ(F)=k$, we call $H$ strictly $F$-Turán-good (or $(H, F)$ strictly Turán-good) if the Turán graph $T_{k-1}(n)$ is the unique $F$-free graph on $n$ vertices containing the largest number of copies of $H$ when $n$ is large enough. Let $F$ be a graph with chromatic number $χ(F)\geq 3$ and a color-critical edge and let $P_\ell$ be a path with $\ell$ vertices. Gerbner and Palmer (2020, arXiv:2006.03756) showed that $(P_3, F)$ is strictly Turán good if $χ(H)\ge 4$ and they conjectured that (a) this result is true when $χ(F)=3$, and, moreover, (b) $(P_\ell, K_k)$ is Turán-good for every pair of integers $\ell$ and $k$. In the present paper, we show that $(H, F)$ is strictly Turán-good when $H$ is a bipartite graph with matching number $ν(H)=\lfloor \frac{|V(H)|}{2}\rfloor$ and $χ(F)= 3$, as a corollary, this result confirms the conjecture (a); we also prove that $(P_\ell, F)$ is strictly Turán-good for $2\le\ell\leq 6$ and $χ(F)\ge 4$, this also confirms the conjecture (b) for $2\le\ell\leq 6$ and $k\ge 4$.

The bipartite Ramsey number $br(C_{2n}, C_{2m})$
Given bipartite graphs $H_1$, \dots , $H_k$, the bipartite Ramsey number $br(H_1,\dots, H_k)$ is the minimum integer $N$ such that any $k$-edge-coloring of complete bipartite graph $K_{N, N}$ contains a monochromatic $H_i$ in color $i$ for $1\le i\le k$. There are considerable results on asymptotic values of bipartite Ramsey numbers of cycles. For exact value, Zhang-Sun \cite{Zhangs} determined $br(C_4, C_{2n})$, Zhang-Sun-Wu \cite{Zhangsw} determined $br(C_6, C_{2n})$, and Gholami-Rowshan \cite{GR} determined $br(C_8, C_{2n})$. In this paper, we solve all remaining cases and give the exact values of $br(C_{2n}, C_{2m})$ for all $n\ge m\ge 5$, this answers a question concerned by Bucić-Letzter-Sudakov \cite{BLS}, Gholami-Rowshan \cite{GR}, Zhang-Sun \cite{Zhangs}, and Zhang-Sun-Wu \cite{Zhangsw}.

It is better to be semi-regular when you have a low degree
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study the algebraic connectivity for several classes of random semi-regular graphs. For large random semi-regular bipartite graphs, we explicitly compute both their algebraic connectivity and as well as the full spectrum distribution. For an integer $d\in\left[ 3,7\right] $, we find families of random semi-regular graphs that have higher algebraic connectivity than a random $d$-regular graphs with the same number of vertices and edges. On the other hand, we show that regular graphs beat semi-regular graphs when $d\geq8.$ More generally, we study random semi-regular graphs whose average degree is $d$, not necessary an integer. This provides a natural generalization of a $d$-regular graph in the case of a non-integer $d.$ We characterise their algebraic connectivity in terms of a root of a certain 6th-degree polynomial. Finally, we construct a small-world-type network of average degree 2.5 with a relatively high algebraic connectivity. We also propose some related open problems and conjectures.

Turán Number of Subdivisions of Multipartite Graphs
In this paper, we investigate the Turán exponent for $1$-subdivisions of graphs that are neither bipartite nor complete. Specifically, we establish an upper bound on the Turán number of the 1-subdivision of $K_{s,t}^+$, where $K_{s,t}^+$ is obtained by adding a single edge within the part of size $s$ of the complete bipartite graph $K_{s,t}$, with $4\leq s \leq t$. In addition, we derive an upper bound for the extremal number of a family of graphs formed by (possibly degenerate) 1-subdivisions of certain tripartite graphs.

Generalized Turán problems for double stars
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study the generalized Turán function $ex(n,H,F)$, when $H$ or $F$ is a double star $S_{a,b}$, which is a tree with a central edge $uv$, $a$ leaves connected to $u$ and $b$ leaves connected to $v$. We determine $ex(n,K_k,S_{a,b})$ and $ex(n,S_{a,b},F)$ for sufficiently large $n$, where $F$ is either a 3-chromatic graph with an edge whose deletion results in a bipartite graph, or the 2-fan, i.e. two triangles sharing a vertex. We also give bounds on $ex(n,S_{a,b},S_{c,d})$.
On the palindromic Hosoya polynomial of trees
Published • View PublicationBIB
A graph $G$ on $n$ vertices of diameter $D$ is called $H$-palindromic if $α(G,k) = α(G,D-k)$ for all $k=0, 1, \dots, \left \lfloor{\frac{D}{2}}\right \rfloor$, where $α(G,k)$ is the number of unordered pairs of vertices at distance $k$. Quantities $α(G,k)$ form coefficients of the Hosoya polynomial. In 1999, Caporossi, Dobrynin, Gutman and Hansen showed that there are exactly five $H$-palindromic trees of even diameter and conjectured that there are no such trees of odd diameter. We prove this conjecture for bipartite graphs. An infinite family of $H$-palindromic trees of diameter $6$ is also constructed.

Almost Cohen-Macaulay bipartite graphs and connected in codimension two
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we study almost Cohen-Macaulay bipartite graphs. Furthermore, we prove that if $G$ is almost Cohen-Macaulay bipartite graph with at least one vertex of positive degree, then there is a vertex of $°(v) \leq 2$. In particular, if $G$ is an almost Cohen-Macaulay bipartite graph and $u$ is a vertex of degree one of $G$ and $v$ its adjacent vertex, then $G\setminus\{v\}$ is almost Cohen-Macaulay. Also, we show that an unmixed Ferrers graph is almost Cohen-Macaulay if and only if it is connected in codimension two. Moreover, we give some examples.
On Generalizations of Pairwise Compatibility Graphs
Published in Discrete Mathematics & Theoretical Computer Science, vol. 26:3, Graph Theory (October 6, 2024) dmtcs:12295 • View PublicationBIB
A graph $G$ is a pairwise compatibility graph (PCG) if there exists an edge-weighted tree and an interval $I$, such that each leaf of the tree is a vertex of the graph, and there is an edge $\{ x, y \}$ in $G$ if and only if the weight of the path in the tree connecting $x$ and $y$ lies within the interval $I$. Originating in phylogenetics, PCGs are closely connected to important graph classes like leaf-powers and multi-threshold graphs, widely applied in bioinformatics, especially in understanding evolutionary processes. In this paper we introduce two natural generalizations of the PCG class, namely $k$-OR-PCG and $k$-AND-PCG, which are the classes of graphs that can be expressed as union and intersection, respectively, of $k$ PCGs. These classes can be also described using the concepts of the covering number and the intersection dimension of a graph in relation to the PCG class. We investigate how the classes of OR-PCG and AND-PCG are related to PCGs, $k$-interval-PCGs and other graph classes known in the literature. In particular, we provide upper bounds on the minimum $k$ for which an arbitrary graph $G$ belongs to $k$-interval-PCGs, $k$-OR-PCG or $k$-AND-PCG classes. For particular graph classes we improve these general bounds. Moreover, we show that, for every integer $k$, there exists a bipartite graph that is not in the $k$-interval-PCGs class, proving that there is no finite $k$ for which the $k$-interval-PCG class contains all the graphs. This answers an open question of Ahmed and Rahman from 2017. Finally, using a Ramsey theory argument, we show that for any $k$, there exists graphs that are not in $k$-AND-PCG, and graphs that are not in $k$-OR-PCG.

Hecke triangle Groups and Dessin d'enfant
In this work we will construct bipartite graphs, famously known as Dessin d'enfant, corresponding to finite index subgroups of Hecke triangle groups $(2, q, \infty )$. Then using a results of \cite{ll} we shall show the correspondences among the special polygons, the bi-partite graph, and the tree diagram for a finite index subgroup of the Hecke triangle groups $(2, q, \infty )$.
Complexity of Paired Domination in AT-free and Planar Graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
For a graph $G=(V,E)$, a subset $D$ of vertex set $V$, is a dominating set of $G$ if every vertex not in $D$ is adjacent to atleast one vertex of $D$. A dominating set $D$ of a graph $G$ with no isolated vertices is called a paired dominating set (PD-set), if $G[D]$, the subgraph induced by $D$ in $G$ has a perfect matching. The Min-PD problem requires to compute a PD-set of minimum cardinality. The decision version of the Min-PD problem remains NP-complete even when $G$ belongs to restricted graph classes such as bipartite graphs, chordal graphs etc. On the positive side, the problem is efficiently solvable for many graph classes including intervals graphs, strongly chordal graphs, permutation graphs etc. In this paper, we study the complexity of the problem in AT-free graphs and planar graph. The class of AT-free graphs contains cocomparability graphs, permutation graphs, trapezoid graphs, and interval graphs as subclasses. We propose a polynomial-time algorithm to compute a minimum PD-set in AT-free graphs. In addition, we also present a linear-time $2$-approximation algorithm for the problem in AT-free graphs. Further, we prove that the decision version of the problem is NP-complete for planar graphs, which answers an open question asked by Lin et al. (in Theor. Comput. Sci., $591 (2015): 99-105$ and Algorithmica, $ 82 (2020) :2809-2840$).

A Schwartz-Zippel Type Estimate for Homogenous Finite Field Polynomials
In this paper, we obtain a Schwartz-Zippel type estimate for homogenous finite field polynomials. Specifically, we use a probabilistic recursion technique to find upper and lower bounds for the number of zeros of a homogenous polynomial and illustrate our result with two examples involving perfect matching in bipartite graphs and common zeros in a collection of polynomials, respectively.
On distance Laplacian energy in terms of graph invariants
Published • View PublicationBIB
For a simple connected graph $G$ of order $n$ having distance Laplacian eigenvalues $ ρ^{L}_{1}\geq ρ^{L}_{2}\geq \cdots \geq ρ^{L}_{n}$, the distance Laplacian energy $DLE(G)$ is defined as $DLE(G)=\sum_{i=1}^{n}\left|ρ^{L}_i-\frac{2 W(G)}{n}\right|$, where $W(G)$ is the Wiener index of $G$. We obtain a relationship between the Laplacian energy and distance Laplacian energy for graphs with diameter 2. We obtain lower bounds for the distance Laplacian energy $DLE(G)$ in terms of the order $n$, the Wiener index $W(G)$, independence number, vertex connectivity number and other given parameters. We characterize the extremal graphs attaining these bounds. We show that the complete bipartite graph has the minimum distance Laplacian energy among all connected bipartite graphs and complete split graph has the minimum distance Laplacian energy among all connected graphs with given independence number. Further, we obtain the distance Laplacian spectrum of the join of a graph with the union of two other graphs. We show that the graph $K_{k}\bigtriangledown(K_{t}\cup K_{n-k-t}), 1\leq t \leq \lfloor\frac{n-k}{2}\rfloor $, has the minimum distance Laplacian energy among all connected graphs with vertex connectivity $k$. We conclude this paper with a discussion on trace norm of a matrix and the importance of our results in the theory of trace norm of the matrix $D^L(G)-\frac{2W(G)}{n}I_n$.

Counterexamples of the Bhattacharya-Friedland-Peled conjecture
Published • View PublicationBIB
The Brauldi-Hoffman conjecture, proved by Rowlinson in 1988, characterized the graph with maximal spectral radius among all simple graphs with prescribed number of edges. In 2008, Bhattacharya, Friedland, and Peled proposed an analog, which will be called the BFP conjecture in the following, of the Brauldi-Hoffman conjecture for the bipartite graphs with fixed numbers of edges in the graph and vertices in the bipartition. The BFP conjecture was proved to be correct if the number of edges is large enough by several authors. However, in this paper we provide some counterexamples of the BFP conjecture.

Strong Edge-Coloring of Cubic Bipartite Graphs: A Counterexample
Published in Discrete Applied Math. Volume 321, 15 November 2022, pp. 258-260 • View PublicationBIB
A strong edge-coloring $\varphi$ of a graph $G$ assigns colors to edges of $G$ such that $\varphi(e_1)\ne \varphi(e_2)$ whenever $e_1$ and $e_2$ are at distance no more than 1. It is equivalent to a proper vertex coloring of the square of the line graph of $G$. In 1990 Faudree, Schelp, Gyárfás, and Tuza conjectured that if $G$ is a bipartite graph with maximum degree 3 and sufficiently large girth, then $G$ has a strong edge-coloring with at most 5 colors. In 2021 this conjecture was disproved by Lužar, Mačajová, Škoviera, and Soták. Here we give an alternative construction to disprove the conjecture.

Classifying grounded intersection graphs via ordered forbidden patterns
It was noted already in the 90s that many classic graph classes, such as interval, chordal, and bipartite graphs, can be characterized by the existence of an ordering of the vertices avoiding some ordered subgraphs, called patterns. Very recently, all the classes corresponding to patterns on three vertices (including the ones mentioned above) have been listed, and proved to be efficiently recognizable. In contrast, very little is known about patterns on four vertices. One of the few graph classes characterized by a pattern on four vertices is the class of intersection graphs of rectangles that are said to be grounded on a line. This class appears naturally in the study of intersection graphs, and similar grounded classes have recently attracted a lot of attention. This paper contains three parts. First, we make a survey of grounded intersection graph classes, summarizing all the known inclusions between these various classes. Second, we show that the correspondence between a pattern on four vertices and grounded rectangle graphs is not an isolated phenomenon. We establish several other pattern characterizations for geometric classes, and show that the hierarchy of grounded intersection graph classes is tightly interleaved with the classes defined patterns on four vertices. We claim that forbidden patterns are a useful tool to classify grounded intersection graphs. Finally, we give an overview of the complexity of the recognition of classes defined by forbidden patterns on four vertices and list several interesting open problems.

Facets of the Total Matching Polytope for bipartite graphs
The Total Matching Polytope generalizes the Stable Set Polytope and the Matching Polytope. In this paper, we give the perfect formulation for Trees and we derive two new families of valid inequalities, the balanced biclique inequalities which are always facet-defining and the non-balanced lifted biclique inequalities obtained by a lifting procedure, which are facet-defining for bipartite graphs. Finally, we give a complete description for Complete Bipartite Graphs.
