On the spectral moment of graphs with given clique number
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $\mathscr{L}_{n,t}$ be the set of all $n$-vertex connected graphs with clique number $t$\,($2\leq t\leq n)$. For $n$-vertex connected graphs with given clique number, lexicographic ordering by spectral moments ($S$-order) is discussed in this paper. The first $\sum_{i=1}^{\lfloor\frac{n-t-1}{3}\rfloor}(n-t-3i)+1$ graphs with $3\le t\le n-4$, and the last few graphs, in the $S$-order, among $\mathscr{L}_{n,t}$ are characterized. In addition, all graphs in $\mathscr{L}_{n,n}\bigcup\mathscr{L}_{n,n-1}$ have an $S$-order; for the cases $t=n-2$ and $t=n-3$ the first three and the first seven graphs in the set $\mathscr{L}_{n,t}$ are characterized, respectively.

Sharp Bounds for the Signless Laplacian Spectral Radius in Terms of Clique Number
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we present a sharp upper and lower bounds for the signless Laplacian spectral radius of graphs in terms of clique number. Moreover, the extremal graphs which attain the upper and lower bounds are characterized. In addition, these results disprove the two conjectures on the signless Laplacian spectral radius in [P. Hansen and C. Lucas, Bounds and conjectures for the signless Laplacian index of graphs, Linear Algebra Appl., 432(2010) 3319-3336].
Triangle-free intersection graphs of line segments with large chromatic number
Published in J.Combin.Theory Ser.B 105 (2014) 6-10 • View PublicationBIB
In the 1970s, Erdos asked whether the chromatic number of intersection graphs of line segments in the plane is bounded by a function of their clique number. We show the answer is no. Specifically, for each positive integer $k$, we construct a triangle-free family of line segments in the plane with chromatic number greater than $k$. Our construction disproves a conjecture of Scott that graphs excluding induced subdivisions of any fixed graph have chromatic number bounded by a function of their clique number.

A note on "Folding wheels and fans."
In S.Gervacio, R.Guerrero and H.Rara, Folding wheels and fans, Graphs and Combinatorics 18 (2002) 731-737, the authors obtain formulas for the clique numbers onto which wheels and fans fold. We present an interpolation theorem which generalizes their theorems 4.2 and 5.2. We show that their formula for wheels is wrong. We show that for threshold graphs, the achromatic number and folding number coincides with the chromatic number.

On the critical ideals of graphs
Published in Linear Algebra and its Applications 439 (2013) 3870-3892 • View PublicationBIB
We introduce some determinantal ideals of the generalized Laplacian matrix associated to a digraph G, that we call critical ideals of G. Critical ideals generalize the critical group and the characteristic polynomials of the adjacency and Laplacian matrices of a digraph. The main results of this article are the determination of some minimal generator sets and the reduced Grobner basis for the critical ideals of the complete graphs, the cycles and the paths. Also, we establish a bound between the number of trivial critical ideals and the stability and clique numbers of a graph.

The Commuting Graph of the Symmetric Inverse Semigroup
The commuting graph of a finite non-commutative semigroup $S$, denoted $\cg(S)$, is a simple graph whose vertices are the non-central elements of $S$ and two distinct vertices $x,y$ are adjacent if $xy=yx$. Let $\mi(X)$ be the symmetric inverse semigroup of partial injective transformations on a finite set $X$. The semigroup $\mi(X)$ has the symmetric group $\sym(X)$ of permutations on $X$ as its group of units. In 1989, Burns and Goldsmith determined the clique number of the commuting graph of $\sym(X)$. In 2008, Iranmanesh and Jafarzadeh found an upper bound of the diameter of $\cg(\sym(X))$, and in 2011, Doluzan and Oblak claimed (but their proof has a GAP) that this upper bound is in fact the exact value. The goal of this paper is to begin the study of the commuting graph of the symmetric inverse semigroup $\mi(X)$. We calculate the clique number of $\cg(\mi(X))$, the diameters of the commuting graphs of the proper ideals of $\mi(X)$, and the diameter of $\cg(\mi(X))$ when $|X|$ is even or a power of an odd prime. We show that when $|X|$ is odd and divisible by at least two primes, then the diameter of $\cg(\mi(X))$ is either 4 or 5. In the process, we obtain several results about semigroups, such as a description of all commutative subsemigroups of $\mi(X)$ of maximum order, and analogous results for commutative inverse and commutative nilpotent subsemigroups of $\mi(X)$. The paper closes with a number of problems for experts in combinatorics and in group or semigroup theory.
Partitions of graphs into small and large sets

Let $G$ be a graph on $n$ vertices. We call a subset $A$ of the vertex set $V(G)$ \emph{$k$-small} if, for every vertex $v \in A$, $°(v) \le n - |A| + k$. A subset $B \subseteq V(G)$ is called \emph{$k$-large} if, for every vertex $u \in B$, $°(u) \ge |B| - k - 1$. Moreover, we denote by $\varphi_k(G)$ the minimum integer $t$ such that there is a partition of $V(G)$ into $t$ $k$-small sets, and by $Ω_k(G)$ the minimum integer $t$ such that there is a partition of $V(G)$ into $t$ $k$-large sets. In this paper, we will show tight connections between $k$-small sets, respectively $k$-large sets, and the $k$-independence number, the clique number and the chromatic number of a graph. We shall develop greedy algorithms to compute in linear time both $\varphi_k(G)$ and $Ω_k(G)$ and prove various sharp inequalities concerning these parameters, which we will use to obtain refinements of the Caro-Wei Theorem, the Turán Theorem and the Hansen-Zheng Theorem among other things.
On the strong metric dimension of corona product graphs and join graphs
Published in Discrete Applied Mathematics 161 (7-8) (2013) 1022-1027 • View PublicationBIB
Let $G$ be a connected graph. A vertex $w$ strongly resolves a pair $u$, $v$ of vertices of $G$ if there exists some shortest $u-w$ path containing $v$ or some shortest $v-w$ path containing $u$. A set $W$ of vertices is a strong resolving set for $G$ if every pair of vertices of $G$ is strongly resolved by some vertex of $W$. The smallest cardinality of a strong resolving set for $G$ is called the strong metric dimension of $G$. It is known that the problem of computing this invariant is NP-hard. It is therefore desirable to reduce the problem of computing the strong metric dimension of product graphs, to the problem of computing some parameter of the factor graphs. We show that the problem of finding the strong metric dimension of the corona product $G\odot H$, of two graphs $G$ and $H$, can be transformed to the problem of finding certain clique number of $H$. As a consequence of the study we show that if $H$ has diameter two, then the strong metric dimension of $G\odot H$ is obtained from the strong metric dimension of $H$ and, if $H$ is not connected or its diameter is greater than two, then the strong metric dimension of $G\odot H$ is obtained from the strong metric dimension of $K_1\odot H$, where $K_1$ denotes the trivial graph. The strong metric dimension of join graphs is also studied.
Distance graphs having large chromatic numbers and not containing cliques or cycles of given size

In this work, the classical Nelson -- Hadwiger problem is studied which lies on the edge of combinatorial geometry and graph theory. It concerns colorings of distance graphs in $ {\mathbb R}^n $, i.e., graphs such that their vertices are vectors and their edges are pairs of vectors at a distance from a given set of postive numbers apart. A series of new lower bounds are obtained for the chromatic numbers of such graphs with different restrictions on the clique numbers and the girths.

A class of graphs G is chi-bounded if the chromatic number of the graphs in G is bounded by some function of their clique number. We show that the class of intersection graphs of simple x-monotone curves in the plane intersecting a vertical line is chi-bounded. As a corollary we show that the class of intersection graphs of rays in the plane is chi-bounded, and the class of intersection graphs of unit segments in the plane is chi-bounded

Maximum-Size Independent Sets and Automorphism Groups of Tensor Powers of the Even Derangement Graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $A_n$ be the alternating group of even permutations of $X:=\{1,2,...,n\}$ and ${\mathcal E}_n$ the set of even derangements on $X.$ Denote by $A\T_n^q$ the tensor product of $q$ copies of $A\T_n,$ where the Cayley graph $A\T_n:=\T(A_n,{\mathcal E}_n)$ is called the even derangement graph. In this paper, we intensively investigate the properties of $A\T_n^q$ including connectedness, diameter, independence number, clique number, chromatic number and the maximum-size independent sets of $A\T_n^q.$ By using the result on the maximum-size independent sets $A\T_n^q$, we completely determine the full automorphism groups of $A\T_n^q.$

Expanders Are Universal for the Class of All Spanning Trees
Published • View PublicationBIB
Given a class of graphs F, we say that a graph G is universal for F, or F-universal, if every H in F is contained in G as a subgraph. The construction of sparse universal graphs for various families F has received a considerable amount of attention. One is particularly interested in tight F-universal graphs, i.e., graphs whose number of vertices is equal to the largest number of vertices in a graph from F. Arguably, the most studied case is that when F is some class of trees. Given integers n and Δ, we denote by T(n,Δ) the class of all n-vertex trees with maximum degree at most Δ. In this work, we show that every n-vertex graph satisfying certain natural expansion properties is T(n,Δ)-universal or, in other words, contains every spanning tree of maximum degree at most Δ. Our methods also apply to the case when Δis some function of n. The result has a few very interesting implications. Most importantly, we obtain that the random graph G(n,p) is asymptotically almost surely (a.a.s.) universal for the class of all bounded degree spanning (i.e., n-vertex) trees provided that p \geq c n^{-1/3} \log^2n where c > 0 is a constant. Moreover, a corresponding result holds for the random regular graph of degree pn. In fact, we show that if Δsatisfies \log n \leq Δ\leq n^{1/3}, then the random graph G(n,p) with p \geq c Δn^{-1/3} \log n and the random r-regular n-vertex graph with r \geq cΔn^{2/3} \log n are a.a.s. T(n,Δ)-universal. Another interesting consequence is the existence of locally sparse n-vertex T(n,Δ)-universal graphs. For constant Δ, we show that one can (randomly) construct n-vertex T(n,Δ)-universal graphs with clique number at most five. Finally, we show robustness of random graphs with respect to being universal for T(n,Δ) in the context of the Maker-Breaker tree-universality game.
The chromatic gap and its extremes
Published • View PublicationBIB
The {\em chromatic gap} is the difference between the chromatic number and the clique number of a graph. Here we investigate $\gap(n)$, the maximum chromatic gap over graphs on $n$ vertices. Can the extremal graphs be explored? While computational problems related to the chromatic gap are hopeless, an interplay between Ramsey theory and matching theory leads to a simple and (almost) exact formula for $\gap(n)$ in terms of Ramsey numbers.

On the Unit Graph of a Noncommutative Ring
Published in Algebra Colloquium Vol. 22, No. spec01, pp. 817-822 (2015) • View PublicationBIB
Let $R$ be a ring (not necessary commutative) with non-zero identity. The unit graph of $R$, denoted by $G(R)$, is a graph with elements of $R$ as its vertices and two distinct vertices $a$ and $b$ are adjacent if and only if $a+b$ is a unit element of $R$. It was proved that if $R$ is a commutative ring and $\fm$ is a maximal ideal of $R$ such that $|R/\fm|=2$, then $G(R)$ is a complete bipartite graph if and only if $(R, \fm)$ is a local ring. In this paper we generalize this result by showing that if $R$ is a ring (not necessary commutative), then $G(R)$ is a complete $r$-partite graph if and only if $(R, \fm)$ is a local ring and $r=|R/m|=2^n$, for some $n \in \N$ or $R$ is a finite field. Among other results we show that if $R$ is a left Artinian ring, $2 \in U(R)$ and the clique number of $G(R)$ is finite, then $R$ is a finite ring.

Large cliques in graphs with high chromatic number
We study graphs whose chromatic number is close to the order of the graph (the number of vertices). Both when the chromatic number is a constant multiple of the order and when the difference of the chromatic number and the order is a small fixed number, large cliques are forced. We study the latter situation, and we give quantitative results how large the clique number of these graphs have to be. Some related questions are discussed and conjectures are posed. Please note that the results of this article were significantly generalized. Therefore this paper will never be published in a journal. See instead arXiv:1103.3917 [math.CO] for the more general results.

Classes of graphs with small rank decompositions are chi-bounded
A class of graphs G is chi-bounded if the chromatic number of graphs in G is bounded by a function of the clique number. We show that if a class G is chi-bounded,then every class of graphs admitting a decomposition along cuts of small rank to graphs from G is chi-bounded. As a corollary, we obtain that every class of graphs with bounded rank-width (or equivalently, clique-width) is chi-bounded.

Nice labeling problem for event structures: a counterexample
Published in SIAM J. Comput. 41 (2012), 715-727 • View PublicationBIB
In this note, we present a counterexample to a conjecture of Rozoy and Thiagarajan from 1991 (called also the nice labeling problem) asserting that any (coherent) event structure with finite degree admits a labeling with a finite number of labels, or equivalently, that there exists a function $f: \mathbb{N} \mapsto \mathbb{N}$ such that an event structure with degree $\le n$ admits a labeling with at most $f(n)$ labels. Our counterexample is based on the Burling's construction from 1965 of 3-dimensional box hypergraphs with clique number 2 and arbitrarily large chromatic numbers and the bijection between domains of event structures and median graphs established by Barthélemy and Constantin in 1993.

On the extremal properties of the average eccentricity
The eccentricity of a vertex is the maximum distance from it to another vertex and the average eccentricity $ecc (G)$ of a graph $G$ is the mean value of eccentricities of all vertices of $G$. The average eccentricity is deeply connected with a topological descriptor called the eccentric connectivity index, defined as a sum of products of vertex degrees and eccentricities. In this paper we analyze extremal properties of the average eccentricity, introducing two graph transformations that increase or decrease $ecc (G)$. Furthermore, we resolve four conjectures, obtained by the system AutoGraphiX, about the average eccentricity and other graph parameters (the clique number, the Randi\' c index and the independence number), refute one AutoGraphiX conjecture about the average eccentricity and the minimum vertex degree and correct one AutoGraphiX conjecture about the domination number.

Kochen-Specker Sets and the Rank-1 Quantum Chromatic Number
Published in IEEE Transactions on Information Theory, vol. 58, no. 4, April 2012 • View PublicationBIB
The quantum chromatic number of a graph $G$ is sandwiched between its chromatic number and its clique number, which are well known NP-hard quantities. We restrict our attention to the rank-1 quantum chromatic number $χ_q^{(1)}(G)$, which upper bounds the quantum chromatic number, but is defined under stronger constraints. We study its relation with the chromatic number $χ(G)$ and the minimum dimension of orthogonal representations $ξ(G)$. It is known that $ξ(G) \leq χ_q^{(1)}(G) \leq χ(G)$. We answer three open questions about these relations: we give a necessary and sufficient condition to have $ξ(G) = χ_q^{(1)}(G)$, we exhibit a class of graphs such that $ξ(G) < χ_q^{(1)}(G)$, and we give a necessary and sufficient condition to have $χ_q^{(1)}(G) < χ(G)$. Our main tools are Kochen-Specker sets, collections of vectors with a traditionally important role in the study of noncontextuality of physical theories, and more recently in the quantification of quantum zero-error capacities. Finally, as a corollary of our results and a result by Avis, Hasegawa, Kikuchi, and Sasaki on the quantum chromatic number, we give a family of Kochen-Specker sets of growing dimension.
