Coloring Delaunay-Edges and their Generalizations
Published • View Publication • BIB
We consider geometric hypergraphs whose vertex set is a finite set of points (e.g., in the plane), and whose hyperedges are the intersections of this set with a family of geometric regions (e.g., axis-parallel rectangles). A typical coloring problem for such geometric hypergraphs asks, given an integer $k$, for the existence of an integer $m=m(k)$, such that every set of points can be $k$-colored such that every hyperedge of size at least $m$ contains points of different (or all $k$) colors. We generalize this notion by introducing coloring of \emph{$t$-subsets} of points such that every hyperedge that contains enough points contains $t$-subsets of different (or all) colors. In particular, we consider all $t$-subsets and $t$-subsets that are themselves hyperedges. The latter, with $t=2$, is equivalent to coloring the edges of the so-called \emph{Delaunay-graph}. In this paper we study colorings of Delaunay-edges with respect to halfplanes, pseudo-disks, axis-parallel and bottomless rectangles, and also discuss colorings of $t$-subsets of geometric and abstract hypergraphs, and connections between the standard coloring of vertices and coloring of $t$-subsets of vertices.

Aligned plane drawings of the generalized Delaunay-graphs for pseudo-disks
Published in Journal of Computational Geometry 11(1) (2020), 354-370 • Search Publication
We study general Delaunay-graphs, which are natural generalizations of Delaunay triangulations to arbitrary families, in particular to pseudo-disks. We prove that for any finite pseudo-disk family and point set, there is a plane drawing of their Delaunay-graph such that every edge lies inside every pseudo-disk that contains its endpoints.

An asymmetric container lemma and the structure of graphs with no induced $4$-cycle
Published • View Publication • BIB
The method of hypergraph containers, introduced recently by Balogh, Morris, and Samotij, and independently by Saxton and Thomason, has proved to be an extremely useful tool in the study of various monotone graph properties. In particular, a fairly straightforward application of this technique allows one to locate, for each non-bipartite graph $H$, the threshold at which the distribution of edges in a typical $H$-free graph with a given number of edges undergoes a transition from 'random-like' to 'structured'. On the other hand, for non-monotone hereditary graph properties the standard version of this method does not allow one to establish even the existence of such a threshold. In this paper we introduce a refinement of the container method that takes into account the asymmetry between edges and non-edges in a sparse member of a hereditary graph property. As an application, we determine the approximate structure of a typical graph with $n$ vertices, $m$ edges, and no induced copy of the $4$-cycle, for each function $m = m(n)$ satisfying $n^{4/3} (\log n)^4 \leqslant m \ll n^2$. We show that almost all such graphs $G$ have the following property: the vertex set of $G$ can be partitioned into an 'almost-independent' set (a set with $o(m)$ edges) and an 'almost-clique' (a set inducing a subgraph with density $1-o(1)$). The lower bound on $m$ is optimal up to a polylogarithmic factor, as standard arguments show that if $n \ll m \ll n^{4/3}$, then almost all such graphs are 'random-like'. As a further consequence, we deduce that the random graph $G(n,p)$ conditioned to contain no induced $4$-cycles undergoes phase transitions at $p = n^{-2/3 + o(1)}$ and $p = n^{-1/3 + o(1)}$.

On a Ramsey-Turán variant of the Hajnal-Szemerédi theorem
Published • View Publication • BIB
A seminal result of Hajnal and Szemerédi states that if a graph $G$ with $n$ vertices has minimum degree $δ(G) \ge (r-1)n/r$ for some integer $r \ge 2$, then $G$ contains a $K_r$-factor, assuming $r$ divides $n$. Extremal examples which show optimality of the bound on $δ(G)$ are very structured and, in particular, contain large independent sets. In analogy to the Ramsey-Turán theory, Balogh, Molla, and Sharifzadeh initiated the study of how the absence of such large independent sets influences sufficient minimum degree. We show the following two related results: $\bullet$ For any $r > \ell \ge 2$, if $G$ is a graph satisfying $δ(G) \ge (r - \ell)n/(r - \ell + 1) +Ω(n)$ and $α_\ell(G)=o(n)$, that is, a largest $K_\ell$-free induced subgraph has at most $o(n)$ vertices, then $G$ contains a $K_r$-factor. This is optimal for $\ell = r - 1$ and extends a result of Balogh, Molla, and Sharifzadeh who considered the case $r = 3$. $\bullet$ If a graph $G$ satisfies $δ(G) =Ω(n)$ and $α_r^*(G) =o(n)$, that is, every induced $K_r$-free $r$-partite subgraph of $G$ has at least one vertex class of size $o(n)$, then it contains a $K_r$-factor. A similar statement is proven for a general graph $H$.

Strong Pseudo Transitivity and Intersection Graphs
A directed graph $G=(V,E)$ is {\it strongly pseudo transitive} if there is a partition $\{A,E-A\}$ of $E$ so that graphs $G_1=(V,A)$ and $G_2=(V,E-A)$ are transitive, and additionally, if $ab\in A$ and $bc\in E $ implies that $ac\in E$. A strongly pseudo transitive graph $G=(V,E)$ is strongly pseudo transitive of the first type, if $ab\in A$ and $bc\in E$ implies $ac\in A$. An undirected graph is co-strongly pseudo transitive (co-strongly pseudo transitive of the first type) if its complement has an orientation which is strongly pseudo transitive (co-strongly pseudo transitive of the first type). Our purpose is show that the results in computational geometry \cite{CFP, Lu} and intersection graph theory \cite{Ga2, ES} can be unified and extended, using the notion of strong pseudo transitivity. As a consequence the general algorithmic framework in \cite{Sh} is applicable to solve the maximum independent set in $O(n^3)$ time in a variety of problems, thereby, avoiding case by case lengthily arguments for each problem. We show that the intersection graphs of axis parallel rectangles intersecting a diagonal line from bottom, and half segments are co-strongly pseudo transitive. In addition, we show that the class of the interval filament graphs is co-strongly transitive of the first type, and hence the class of polygon circle graphs which is contained in the class of interval filament graphs (but contains the classes of chordal graphs, circular arc, circle, and outer planar graphs), and the class of incomparability graphs are strongly transitive of the first type. For class of chordal graphs we give two different proofs, using two different characterizations, verifying that they are co-strongly transitive of the first type. We present some containment results.
Short rainbow cycles in graphs and matroids
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $G$ be a simple $n$-vertex graph and $c$ be a colouring of $E(G)$ with $n$ colours, where each colour class has size at least $2$. We prove that $(G,c)$ contains a rainbow cycle of length at most $\lceil \frac{n}{2} \rceil$, which is best possible. Our result settles a special case of a strengthening of the Caccetta-Häggkvist conjecture, due to Aharoni. We also show that the matroid generalization of our main result also holds for cographic matroids, but fails for binary matroids.

On Minrank and Forbidden Subgraphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
The minrank over a field $\mathbb{F}$ of a graph $G$ on the vertex set $\{1,2,\ldots,n\}$ is the minimum possible rank of a matrix $M \in \mathbb{F}^{n \times n}$ such that $M_{i,i} \neq 0$ for every $i$, and $M_{i,j}=0$ for every distinct non-adjacent vertices $i$ and $j$ in $G$. For an integer $n$, a graph $H$, and a field $\mathbb{F}$, let $g(n,H,\mathbb{F})$ denote the maximum possible minrank over $\mathbb{F}$ of an $n$-vertex graph whose complement contains no copy of $H$. In this paper we study this quantity for various graphs $H$ and fields $\mathbb{F}$. For finite fields, we prove by a probabilistic argument a general lower bound on $g(n,H,\mathbb{F})$, which yields a nearly tight bound of $Ω(\sqrt{n}/\log n)$ for the triangle $H=K_3$. For the real field, we prove by an explicit construction that for every non-bipartite graph $H$, $g(n,H,\mathbb{R}) \geq n^δ$ for some $δ= δ(H)>0$. As a by-product of this construction, we disprove a conjecture of Codenotti, Pudlák, and Resta. The results are motivated by questions in information theory, circuit complexity, and geometry.

Near-perfect clique-factors in sparse pseudorandom graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
We prove that, for any $t\ge 3$, there exists a constant $c=c(t)>0$ such that any $d$-regular $n$-vertex graph with the second largest eigenvalue in absolute value~$λ$ satisfying $λ\le c d^{t-1}/n^{t-2}$ contains vertex-disjoint copies of $K_t$ covering all but at most $n^{1-1/(8t^4)}$ vertices. This provides further support for the conjecture of Krivelevich, Sudakov and Szábo [\emph{Triangle factors in sparse pseudo-random graphs}, Combinatorica \textbf{24} (2004), pp.~403--426] that $(n,d,λ)$-graphs with $n\in 3\mathbb{N}$ and $λ\leq cd^{2}/n$ for a suitably small absolute constant~$c>0$ contain triangle-factors.

A four vertex theorem for frieze patterns?
Published • View Publication • BIB
Given two Coxeter's frieze patterns with the same width and consisting of positive numbers, choose a row and consider the periodic sequence of the differences of the respective entries of the two friezes. We ask for which rows this sequence must change sign at least four times over the period. We prove that this is the case for the first and for the second non-trivial rows, and that this is true, for all rows, for an infinitesimal version of the question. The article also contains expository material on the four vertex theorem and on Coxeter's frieze patterns.

(3a:a)-list-colorability of embedded graphs of girth at least five
A graph G is list (b:a)-colorable if for every assignment of lists of size b to vertices of G, there exists a choice of an a-element subset of the list at each vertex such that the subsets chosen at adjacent vertices are disjoint. We prove that for every positive integer a, the family of minimal obstructions of girth at least five to list (3a:a)-colorability is strongly hyperbolic, in the sense of the hyperbolicity theory developed by Postle and Thomas. This has a number of consequences, e.g., that if a graph of girth at least five and Euler genus g is not list (3a:a)-colorable, then G contains a subgraph with O(g) vertices which is not list (3a:a) colorable.

On the sizes of $(k,l)$-edge-maximal $r$-uniform hypergraphs
Let $H=(V,E)$ be a hypergraph, where $V$ is a set of vertices and $E$ is a set of non-empty subsets of $V$ called edges. If all edges of $H$ have the same cardinality $r$, then $H$ is a $r$-uniform hypergraph; if $E$ consists of all $r$-subsets of $V$, then $H$ is a complete $r$-uniform hypergraph, denoted by $K_n^r$, where $n=|V|$. A $r$-uniform hypergraph $H=(V,E)$ is $(k,l)$-edge-maximal if every subhypergraph $H'$ of $H$ with $|V(H')|\geq l$ has edge-connectivity at most $k$, but for any edge $e\in E(K_n^r)\setminus E(H)$, $H+e$ contains at least one subhypergraph $H''$ with $|V(H'')|\geq l$ and edge-connectivity at least $k+1$. In this paper, we obtain the lower bounds and the upper bounds of the sizes of $(k,l)$-edge-maximal hypergraphs. Furthermore, we show that these bounds are best possible. Thus prior results in [Y.Z. Tian, L.Q. Xu, H.-J. Lai, J.X. Meng, On the sizes of $k$-edge-maximal $r$-uniform hypergraphs, arXiv:1802.08843v3] are extended.

On the number of symbols that forces a transversal

Akbari and Alipour conjectured that any Latin array of order $n$ with at least $n^2/2$ symbols contains a transversal. We confirm this conjecture for large $n$, and moreover, we show that $n^{399/200}$ symbols suffice.
Power domination polynomials of graphs
A power dominating set of a graph is a set of vertices that observes every vertex in the graph by combining classical domination with an iterative propagation process arising from electrical circuit theory. In this paper, we study the power domination polynomial of a graph $G$ of order $n$, defined as $\mathcal{P}(G;x)=\sum_{i=1}^n p(G;i) x^i$, where $p(G;i)$ is the number of power dominating sets of $G$ of size $i$. We relate the power domination polynomial to other graph polynomials, present structural and extremal results about its roots and coefficients, and identify some graph parameters it contains. We also derive decomposition formulas for the power domination polynomial, compute it explicitly for several families of graphs, and explore graphs which can be uniquely identified by their power domination polynomials.

On the non-existence of linear perfect Lee codes: The Zhang-Ge condition and a new polynomial criterion
Published • View Publication • BIB
The Golomb-Welch conjecture (1968) states that there are no $e$-perfect Lee codes in $\mathbb{Z}^n$ for $n\geq 3$ and $e\geq 2$. This conjecture remains open even for linear codes. A recent result of Zhang and Ge establishes the non-existence of linear $e$-perfect Lee codes in $\mathbb{Z}^n$ for infinitely many dimensions $n$, for $e=3$ and $4$. In this paper we extend this result in two ways. First, using the non-existence criterion of Zhang and Ge together with a generalized version of Lucas' theorem we extend the above result for almost all $e$ (i.e. a subset of positive integers with density $1$). Namely, if $e$ contains a digit $1$ in its base-$3$ representation which is not in the unit place (e.g. $e=3,4$) there are no linear $e$-perfect Lee codes in $\mathbb{Z}^n$ for infinitely many dimensions $n$. Next, based on a family of polynomials (the $Q$-polynomials), we present a new criterion for the non-existence of certain lattice tilings. This criterion depends on a prime $p$ and a tile $B$. For $p=3$ and $B$ being a Lee ball we recover the criterion of Zhang and Ge.
Some Ordered Ramsey Numbers of Graphs on Four Vertices
An ordered graph $H$ on $n$ vertices is a graph whose vertices have been labeled bijectively with $\{1,...,n\}$. The ordered Ramsey number $r_<(H)$ is the minimum $n$ such that every two-coloring of the edges of the complete graph $K_n$ contains a monochromatic copy of $H$ such that the vertices in the copy appear in the same order as in $H$. Although some bounds on the ordered Ramsey numbers of certain infinite families of graphs are known, very little is known about the ordered Ramsey numbers of specific small graphs compared to how much we know about the usual Ramsey numbers for these graphs. In this paper we tackle the problem of proving non-trivial upper bounds on orderings of graphs on four vertices. We also extend one of our results to $n+1$ vertex graphs that consist of a complete graph on $n$ vertices with a pendant edge to vertex 1. Finally, we use a SAT solver to compute some numbers exactly.

Triangle-factors in pseudorandom graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
We show that if the second eigenvalue $λ$ of a $d$-regular graph $G$ on $n \in 3 \mathbb{Z}$ vertices is at most $\varepsilon d^2/(n \log n)$, for a small constant $\varepsilon > 0$, then $G$ contains a triangle-factor. The bound on $λ$ is at most an $O(\log n)$ factor away from the best possible one: Krivelevich, Sudakov and Szabó, extending a construction of Alon, showed that for every function $d = d(n)$ such that $Ω(n^{2/3}) \le d \le n$ and infinitely many $n \in \mathbb{N}$ there exists a $d$-regular triangle-free graph $G$ with $Θ(n)$ vertices and $λ= Ω(d^2 / n)$.

On crossing families of complete geometric graphs
Published in Acta Mathematica Hungarica-2019 • View Publication • BIB
A crossing family is a collection of pairwise crossing segments, this concept was introduced by Aronov et. al. (1994). They prove that any set of $n$ points (in general position) in the plain contains a crossing family of size $\sqrt{n/12}$. In this paper we present a generalization of the concept and give several results regarding this generalization.

Flow polynomials of a signed graph
Published • View Publication • BIB
In contrast to ordinary graphs, the number of the nowhere-zero group-flows in a signed graph may vary with different groups, even if the groups have the same order. In fact, for a signed graph $G$ and non-negative integer $d$, it was shown that there exists a polynomial $F_d(G,x)$ such that the number of the nowhere-zero $Γ$-flows in $G$ equals $F_d(G,x)$ evaluated at $k$ for every Abelian group $Γ$ of order $k$ with $ε(Γ)=d$, where $ε(Γ)$ is the largest integer $d$ for which $Γ$ has a subgroup isomorphic to $\mathbb{Z}^d_2$. We focus on the combinatorial structure of $Γ$-flows in a signed graph and the coefficients in $F_d(G,x)$. We first define the fundamental directed circuits for a signed graph $G$ and show that all $Γ$-flows (not necessarily nowhere-zero) in $G$ can be generated by these circuits. It turns out that all $Γ$-flows in $G$ can be evenly classified into $2^{ε(Γ)}$-classes specified by the elements of order 2 in $Γ$, each class of which consists of the same number of flows depending only on the order of the group. This gives an explanation for why the number of $Γ$-flows in a signed graph varies with different $ε(Γ)$, and also gives an answer to a problem posed by Beck and Zaslavsky. Secondly, using an extension of Whitney's broken circuit theory we give a combinatorial interpretation of the coefficients in $F_d(G,x)$ for $d=0$, in terms of the broken bonds. As an example, we give an analytic expression of $F_0(G,x)$ for a class of the signed graphs that contain no balanced circuit. Finally, we show that the sets of edges in a signed graph that contain no broken bond form a homogeneous simplicial complex.

Two Erdős--Hajnal-type Theorems in Hypergraphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
The Erdős--Hajnal Theorem asserts that non-universal graphs, that is, graphs that do not contain an induced copy of some fixed graph $H$, have homogeneous sets of size significantly larger than one can generally expect to find in a graph. We obtain two results of this flavor in the setting of $r$-uniform hypergraphs. A theorem of Rödl asserts that if an $n$-vertex graph is non-universal then it contains an almost homogeneous set (i.e one with edge density either very close to $0$ or $1$) of size $Ω(n)$. We prove that if a $3$-uniform hypergraph is non-universal then it contains an almost homogeneous set of size $Ω(\log n)$. An example of Rödl from 1986 shows that this bound is tight. Let $R_r(t)$ denote the size of the largest non-universal $r$-graph $G$ so that neither $G$ nor its complement contain a complete $r$-partite subgraph with parts of size $t$. We prove an Erdős--Hajnal-type stepping-up lemma, showing how to transform a lower bound for $R_{r}(t)$ into a lower bound for $R_{r+1}(t)$. As an application of this lemma, we improve a bound of Conlon--Fox--Sudakov by showing that $R_3(t) \geq t^{Ω(t)}$.
