Normality conditions in the Sylow $\boldsymbol{p}$-subgroup of $\boldsymbol{\mathrm{Sym}(p^n)}$ and its associated Lie algebra
Published in Journal of Algebra, Volume 689, 1 March 2026, Pages 747-763 • View Publication • BIB
In this work, we give a description of the structure of the normal subgroups of a Sylow $p$-subgroup $W_n$ of $\mathrm{Sym}(p^n)$, showing that they contain a term from the lower central series with bounded index. To this end, we explicitly determine the terms of the upper and the lower central series of $W_n$. We provide a similar description of these series in the Lie algebra associated to $W_n$, giving a new proof of the equality of their terms in both the group and the algebra contexts. Finally, we calculate the growth of the normalizer chain starting from an elementary abelian regular subgroup of $W_n$.
Paper BOAT
We derive a formula for computing the size of lower Bruhat intervals for elements in the dominant cone of an affine Weyl group of type $A$. This enumeration problem is reduced to counting lattice points in certain polyhedra. Our main tool is a decomposition -- or tiling -- of each interval into smaller, combinatorially tractable pieces, which we call paper boats. We also conjecture a generalization of this formula to all affine Weyl groups, restricted to elements in the lowest two-sided Kazhdan-Lusztig cell, which contains almost all of the elements.

Trisimplicial vertices in (fork, odd parachute)-free graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
An {\em odd hole} in a graph is an induced subgraph which is a cycle of odd length at least five. An {\em odd parachute} is a graph obtained from an odd hole $H$ by adding a new edge $uv$ such that $x$ is adjacent to $u$ but not to $v$ for each $x\in V(H)$. A graph $G$ is perfectly divisible if for each induced subgraph $H$ of $G$, $V(H)$ can be partitioned into $A$ and $B$ such that $H[A]$ is perfect and $ω(H[B])<ω(H)$. A vertex of a graph is {\em trisimplicial} if its neighbourhood is the union of three cliques. In this paper, we prove that $χ(G)\leq \binom{ω(G)+1}{2}$ if $G$ is a (fork, odd parachute)-free graph by showing that $G$ contains a trisimplicial vertex when $G$ is nonperfectly divisible. This generalizes some results of Karthick, Kaufmann and Sivaraman [{\em Electron. J. Combin.} \textbf{29} (2022) \#P3.19], and Wu and Xu [{\em Discrete Math.} \textbf{347} (2024) 114121]. As a corollary, every nonperfectly divisible claw-free graph contains a trisimplicial vertex.

Balanced colorings of Erdős-Rényi hypergraphs
An $r$-uniform hypergraph $H = (V, E)$ is $r$-partite if there exists a partition of the vertex set into $r$ parts such that each edge contains exactly one vertex from each part. We say an independent set in such a hypergraph is balanced if it contains an equal number of vertices from each partition. The balanced chromatic number of $H$ is the minimum value $q$ such that $H$ admits a proper $q$-coloring where each color class is a balanced independent set. In this note, we determine the asymptotic behavior of the balanced chromatic number for sparse $r$-uniform $r$-partite Erdős--Rényi hypergraphs. A key step in our proof is to show that any balanced colorable hypergraph of average degree $d$ admits a proper balanced coloring with $r(r-1)d + 1$ colors. This extends a result of Feige and Kogan on bipartite graphs to this more general setting.

Number of independent transversals in multipartite graphs
An independent transversal in a multipartite graph is an independent set that intersects each part in exactly one vertex. We show that for every even integer $r\ge 2$, there exist $c_r>0$ and $n_0$ such that every $r$-partite graph with parts of size $n\ge n_0$ and maximum degree at most $rn/(2r-2)-t$, where $t=o(n)$, contains at least $c_r t n^{r-1}$ independent transversals. This is best possible up to the value of $c_r$. Our result confirms a conjecture of Haxell and Szabó from 2006 and partially answers a question raised by Erdős in 1972 and studied by Bollobás, Erdős and Szemerédi in 1975. We also show that, given any integer $s\ge 2$ and even integer $r\ge 2$, there exist $c_{r,s}>0$ and $n_0$ such that every $r$-partite graph with parts of size $n\ge n_0$ and maximum degree at most $rn/(2r-2)- c_{r, s} n^{1-1/s}$ contains an independent set with exactly $s$ vertices in each part. This is best possible up to the value of $c_{r, s}$ if a widely believed conjecture for the Zarankiewicz number holds. Our result partially answers a question raised by Di Braccio and Illingworth recently.

Vertex-Based Localization of Turán's Theorem
Let $G$ be a simple graph with $n$ vertices and $m$ edges. According to Turán's theorem, if $G$ is $K_{r+1}$-free, then $m \leq |E(T(n, r))|,$ where $T(n, r)$ denotes the Turán graph on $n$ vertices with a maximum clique of order $r$. A limitation of this statement is that it does not give an expression in terms of $n$ and $r$. A widely used version of Turán's theorem states that for an $n$-vertex $K_{r+1}$-free graph, $m \leq \left\lfloor \frac{n^2(r-1)}{2r} \right\rfloor.$ Though this bound is often more convenient, it is not the same as the original statement. In particular, the class of extremal graphs for this bound, say $\mathcal{S}$, is a proper subset of the set of Turán graphs. In this paper, we generalize this result as follows: For each $v \in V(G)$, let $c(v)$ be the order of the largest clique that contains $v$. We show that \[ m \leq \left\lfloor\frac{n}{2}\sum_{v\in V(G)}\frac{c(v)-1}{c(v)}\right\rfloor\] Furthermore, we characterize the class of extremal graphs that attain equality in this bound. Interestingly, this class contains two extra non-Turán graphs other than the graphs in $\mathcal{S}$.

The Generalized Double Pouring Problem: Analysis, Bounds and Algorithms
We consider a logical puzzle which we call double pouring problem, which was original defined for $k=3$ vessels. We generalize this definition to $k \ge 2 $ as follows. Each of the $k$ vessels contains an integer amount of water, called its value, where the values are $a_i$ for $i=1,2,\dots,k$ and the sum of values is $n$. A pouring step means pouring water from one vessel with value $a_i$ to another vessel with value $a_j$, where $ 1 \le i \not= j \le k $ and $a_i \le a_j $. After this pouring step the first vessel has value $2a_i$ and the second one value $a_j-a_i$. Now the pouring problem is to find as few pourings steps as possible to empty at least one vessel, or to show that such an emptying is not possible (which is possible only in the case $k=2$). For $k=2$ each pouring step is unique. We give a necessary and sufficient condition, when for a given $ (a_1,a_2)$ with $a_1+a_2=n$ the pouring problem is solvable. For $k=3$ we improve the upper bound of the pouring problem for some special cases. For $k \ge 4 $ we extend the known lower bound for $k=3$ and improve the known upper bound $\mathcal{O}((\log n)^2)$ for $k=3$ to $\mathcal{O}(\log n\log\log n)$. Finally, for $k \ge 3$, we investigate values and bounds for some functions related to the pouring problem.

Vertex-Based Localization of Erdős-Gallai Theorems for Paths and Cycles
For a simple graph $G$, let $n$ and $m$ denote the number of vertices and edges in $G$, respectively. The Erdős-Gallai theorem for paths states that in a simple $P_k$-free graph, $m \leq \frac{n(k-1)}{2}$, where $P_k$ denotes a path with length $k$ (that is, with $k$ edges). In this paper, we generalize this result as follows: For each $v \in V(G)$, let $p(v)$ be the length of the longest path that contains $v$. We show that \[m \leq \sum_{v \in V(G)} \frac{p(v)}{2}\] The Erdős-Gallai theorem for cycles states that in a simple graph $G$ with circumference (that is, the length of the longest cycle) at most $k$, we have $m \leq \frac{k(n-1)}{2}$. We strengthen this result as follows: For each $v \in V(G)$, let $c(v)$ be the length of the longest cycle that contains $v$, or $2$ if $v$ is not part of any cycle. We prove that \[m \leq \left( \sum_{v \in V(G)} \frac{c(v)}{2} \right) - \frac{c(u)}{2}\] where $c(u)$ denotes the circumference of $G$. \newline Furthermore, we characterize the class of extremal graphs that attain equality in these bounds.

Spanning clique subdivisions in pseudorandom graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper, we study the appearance of a spanning subdivision of a clique in graphs satisfying certain pseudorandom conditions. Specifically, we show the following three results. Firstly, that there are constants $C>0$ and $c\in (0,1]$ such that, whenever $d/λ\ge C$, every $(n,d,λ)$-graph contains a spanning subdivision of $K_t$ for all $2\le t \le \min\{cd,c\sqrt{\frac{n}{\log n}}\}$. Secondly, that there are constants $C>0$ and $c\in (0,1]$ such that, whenever $d/λ\ge C\log^3n$, every $(n,d,λ)$-graph contains a spanning nearly-balanced subdivision of $K_t$ for all $2\le t \le \min\{cd,c\sqrt{\frac{n}{\log^3n}}\}$. Finally, we show that for every $μ>0$, there are constants $c,\varepsilon\in (0,1]$ and $n_0\in \mathbb N$ such that, whenever $n\ge n_0$, every $n$-vertex graph with minimum degree at least $μn$ and no bipartite holes of size $\varepsilon n$ contains a spanning nearly-balanced subdivision of $K_t$ for all $2\le t \le c\sqrt{n}$.

Semidefinite lower bounds for covering codes
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $K_q(n,r)$ denote the minimum size of a $q$-ary covering code of word length $n$ and covering radius $r$. In other words, $K_q(n,r)$ is the minimum size of a set of $q$-ary codewords of length $n$ such that the Hamming balls of radius $r$ around the codewords cover the Hamming space $\{0,\ldots,q-1\}^n$. The special case $K_3(n,1)$ is often referred to as the football pool problem, as it is equivalent to finding a set of forecasts on $n$ football matches that is guaranteed to contain a forecast with at most one wrong outcome. In this paper, we build and expand upon the work of Gijswijt (2005), who introduced a semidefinite programming lower bound on $K_q(n,r)$ via matrix cuts. We develop techniques that strengthen this bound, by introducing new semidefinite constraints inspired by Lasserre's hierarchy for 0-1 programs and symmetry reduction methods, and a more powerful objective function. The techniques lead to sharper lower bounds, setting new records across a broad range of values of $q$, $n$, and $r$.

ninfty: A software package for homotopical combinatorics
We introduce ninfty, a header-only C++ library distributed under an MIT Open Source License designed for the study of enumeration problems arising in homotopical combinatorics. The ninfty repository moreover contains a folder with data files for many common finite groups. This is in addition to Sage code which can be used to generate input data for further finite groups, and Sage code for generating input data for abstract lattices which may not arise at the subgroup lattice of a group.

Odd Cuts in Bipartite Grafts II: Structure and Universality of Decapital Distance Components
This paper is the second in a series of papers characterizing the maximum packing of \( T \)-cuts in bipartite grafts, following the first paper (N.~Kita, ``Tight cuts in bipartite grafts~I: Capital distance components,'' {arXiv:2202.00192v2}, 2022). Given a graft $(G, T)$, a minimum join $F$, and a specified vertex $r$ called the root, the distance components of $(G, T)$ are defined as subgraphs of $G$ determined by the distances induced by $F$. A distance component is called {\em capital} if it contains the root; otherwise, it is called {\em decapital}. In our first paper, we investigated the canonical structure of capital distance components in bipartite grafts, which can be described using the graft analogue of the Kotzig--Lovász decomposition. In this paper, we provide the counterpart structure for the decapital distance components. We also establish a necessary and sufficient condition for two vertices $r$ and $r'$ under which a decapital distance component with respect to root $r$ is also a decapital distance component with respect to root $r'$. As a consequence, we obtain that the total number of decapital distance components in a bipartite graft, taken over all choices of root, is equal to twice the number of edges in a minimum join of the graft.

Reconstructing graphs with subgraph compositions
Published • View Publication • BIB
We generalize the problem of reconstructing strings from their substring compositions first introduced by Acharya et al. in 2015 motivated by polymer-based advanced data storage systems utilizing mass spectrometry. Namely, we see strings as labeled path graphs, and as such try to reconstruct labeled graphs. For a given integer t, the subgraph compositions contain either vectors of labels for each connected subgraph of order t (t-multiset-compositions) or the sum of all labels of all connected subgraphs of order t (t-sum-composition). We ask whether, given a graph of which we know the structure and an oracle whom you can query for compositions, we can reconstruct the labeling of the graph. If it is possible, then the graph is reconstructable; otherwise, it is confusable, and two labeled graphs with the same compositions are called equicomposable. We prove that reconstructing through a brute-force algorithm is wildly inefficient, before giving methods for reconstructing several graph classes using as few compositions as possible. We also give negative results, finding the smallest confusable graphs and trees, as well as families with a large number of equicomposable non-isomorphic graphs. An interesting result occurs when twinning one leaf of a path: some paths are confusable, creating a twin out of a leaf sees the graph alternating between reconstructable and confusable depending on the parity of the path, and creating a false twin out of a leaf makes the graph reconstructable using only sum-compositions in all cases.
Two-block paths in oriented graphs of large semidegree
Published • View Publication • BIB
We study the existence of oriented paths with two blocks in oriented graphs under semidegree conditions. A block of an oriented path is a maximal directed subpath. Given positive integers $k$ and $\ell$ with $k/2\le \ell < k$, we establish a semidegree function that guarantees the containment of every oriented path with two blocks of sizes $\ell$ and $k-\ell$. As a corollary, we show that every oriented graph with all in- and out-degrees at least $3k/4$ contains every two-block path with $k$ arcs. Our results extend previous work on Stein's conjecture and related problems concerning oriented paths.

Steiner triple systems with high discrepancy
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper, we initiate the study of discrepancy questions for combinatorial designs. Specifically, we show that, for every fixed $r\ge 3$ and $n\equiv 1,3 \pmod{6}$, any $r$-colouring of the triples on $[n]$ admits a Steiner triple system of order $n$ with discrepancy $Ω(n^2)$. This is not true for $r=2$, but we are able to asymptotically characterise all $2$-colourings which do not contain a Steiner triple system with high discrepancy. The key step in our proofs is a characterization of 3-uniform hypergraphs avoiding a certain natural type of induced subgraphs, contributing to the structural theory of hypergraphs.

Recent Progress in Ramsey Theory
Published • View Publication • BIB
The classical Ramsey numbers $r(s,t)$ denote the minimum $n$ such that every red-blue coloring of the edges of the complete graph $K_n$ contains either a red clique of order $s$ or a blue clique of order $t$. These quantities are the centerpiece of graph Ramsey Theory, and have been studied for almost a century. The Erdős-Szekeres Theorem (1935) shows that for each $s \geq 2$, $r(s,t) = O(t^{s - 1})$ as $t \rightarrow \infty$. We introduce a new approach using pseudorandom graphs which shows $r(4,t) = Ω(t^3/(\log t)^4)$ as $t \rightarrow \infty$, answering an old conjecture of Erdős, and we illustrate how to apply this approach to many other Ramsey and related combinatorial problems.

Unavoidable induced subgraphs of large and infinite $2$-edge-connected graphs
In 1930, Ramsey proved that every large graph contains either a large clique or a large edgeless graph as an induced subgraph. It is well known that every large connected graph contains a long path, a large clique, or a large star as an induced subgraph. Recently Allred, Ding, and Oporowski presented the unavoidable large induced subgraphs for large $2$-connected graphs and for infinite $2$-connected graphs. In this paper we establish the $2$-edge-connected analogues of these results. As consequences we obtain results on unavoidable large subgraphs, topological minors, minors, induced topological minors, induced minors, and Eulerian subgraphs in large and infinite $2$-edge-connected graphs. When appropriate we extend our results to multigraphs.

Orthogonalisability of joins of graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
A graph is said to be orthogonalisable if the set of real symmetric matrices whose off-diagonal pattern is prescribed by its edges contains an orthogonal matrix. We determine some necessary and some sufficient conditions on the sizes of the connected components of two graphs for their join to be orthogonalisable. In some cases, those conditions coincide, and we present several families of joins of graphs that are orthogonalisable.

Disperse Hypergraphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
For $\ell \geq 3$, an $\ell$-uniform hypergraph is disperse if the number of edges induced by any set of $\ell+1$ vertices is 0, 1, $\ell$ or $\ell+1$. We show that every disperse $\ell$-uniform hypergraph on $n$ vertices contains a clique or independent set of size $n^{Ω_{\ell}(1)}$, answering a question of the first author and Tomon. To this end, we prove several structural properties of disperse hypergraphs.

The maximum spectral radius of $θ_{2,2,3}$-free graphs with given size
Published • View Publication • BIB
A theta graph $θ_{r,p,q}$ is the graph obtained by connecting two distinct vertices with three internally disjoint paths of length $r,p,q$, where $q\geq p\geq r\geq1$ and $p\geq2$. A graph is $θ_{r,p,q}$-free if it does not contain $θ_{r,p,q}$ as a subgraph. The maximum spectral radius of $θ_{1,p,q}$-free graphs with given size has been determined for any $q\geq p\geq2$. Zhai, Lin and Shu [Spectral extrema of graphs with fixed size: cycles and complete bipartite graphs, European J. Combin. 95 (2021) 103322] characterized the extremal graph with the maximum spectral radius of $θ_{2,2,2}$-free graphs having $m$ edges. In this paper, we consider the maximum spectral radius of $θ_{2,2,3}$-free graphs with size $m$ and characterize the extremal graph.
