A Quadratic Vertex Kernel and a Subexponential Algorithm for Subset-FAST
In the Subset Feedback Arc Set in Tournaments, Subset-FAST problem we are given as input a tournament $T$ with a vertex set $V(T)$ and an arc set $A(T)$, along with a terminal set $S \subseteq V(T)$, and an integer $ k$. The objective is to determine whether there exists a set $ F \subseteq A(T) $ with $|F| \leq k$ such that the resulting graph $T-F $ contains no cycle that includes any vertex of $S$. When $S=V(T)$ this is the classic Feedback Arc Set in Tournaments (FAST) problem. We obtain the first polynomial kernel for this problem parameterized by the solution size. More precisely, we obtain an algorithm that, given an input instance $(T, S, k)$, produces an equivalent instance $(T',S',k')$ with $k'\leq k$ and $V(T')=O(k^2)$. It was known that FAST admits a simple quadratic vertex kernel and a non-trivial linear vertex kernel. However, no such kernel was previously known for Subset-FAST. Our kernel employs variants of the most well-known reduction rules for FAST and introduces two new reduction rules to identify irrelevant vertices. As a result of our kernelization, we also obtain the first sub-exponential time FPT algorithm for Subset-FAST.

On generalized Tur{á}n problems with bounded matching number and circumference
Let \( \mathcal{F} \) be a family of graphs. The generalized Turán number \( \operatorname{ex}(n, K_r, \mathcal{F}) \) is the maximum number of $K_r$ in an \( n \)-vertex graph that does not contain any member of \( \mathcal{F} \) as a subgraph. Recently, Alon and Frankl initiated the study of Turán problems with bounded matching number. In this paper, we determine the generalized Turán number of \( C_{\geq k} \) with bounded matching number.

The threshold for loose Hamilton cycles in random hypergraph
We show that w.h.p.\ the random $r$-uniform hypergraph $H_{n,m}$ contains a loose Hamilton cycle, provided $r\geq 3$ and $m\geq \frac{(1+ε)n\log n}{r}$, where $ε$ is an arbitrary positive constant. This is asymptotically best possible, as if $m\leq \frac{(1-ε)n\log n}{r}$ then w.h.p.\ $H_{n,m}$ contains isolated vertices.
Characterizing the positive inertia index of connected signed graphs in terms of girth
Let $G^σ=(G,σ)$ be a connected signed graph and $A(G^σ)$ be its adjacency matrix. The positive inertia index of $G^σ$, denoted by $p^{+}(G^σ)$, is defined as the number of positive eigenvalues of $A(G^σ)$. Assume that $G^σ$ contains at least one cycle, and let $g_{r}$ be its girth. In this paper, we prove $p^{+}(G^σ) \geq \lceil \frac {g_{r}}{2} \rceil-1$ for a signed graph $G^σ$. The extremal signed graphs corresponding to $p^{+}(G^σ) = \lceil \frac {g_{r}}{2} \rceil-1$ and $p^{+}(G^σ) =\lceil \frac {g_{r}}{2} \rceil$ are characterized, respectively. The results presented in this article extend the recent work on ordinary graphs by Duan and Yang (Linear Algebra Appl., 2024) to the context of signed graphs.
Turán problems for suspension of a balanced tree
Published • View Publication • BIB
The Turán number $\ex(n,H)$ is the maximum number of edges that an $n$-vertex $H$-free graph can have. The suspension $\widehat{H}$ is obtained from $H$ by adding a new vertex which is adjacent to all vertices of $H$ and a tree is balanced if the sizes of its two color classes differ at most $1$. In this paper, we obtain a sharp bound of $\ex(n,\widehat{T})$ when $n\ge 4(4k)^6$ based on the Erdős-Sós conjecture. We also show the bound is sharp for infinitely many $n$ and characterize all extremal graphs. In particular, if $T$ satisfies some conditions such as $T$ contains a matching covering all vertices in one color class, then the bound is sharp for all $n$. This is a new class of graphs whose decomposition family does not contain a linear forest but we still can determine its Turán number.

Minimum degree conditions for Hamilton $l$-cycles in $ k $-uniform hypergraphs
Published in The Electronic Journal of Combinatorics. Volume 32, Issue 1, 2025. Article number P1.35 • View Publication • BIB
We show that for $ η>0 $ and sufficiently large $ n $, every 5-graph on $ n $ vertices with $δ_{2}(H)\ge (91/216+η)\binom{n}{3}$ contains a Hamilton 2-cycle. This minimum 2-degree condition is asymptotically best possible. Moreover, we give some related results on Hamilton $ \ell $-cycles with $ d $-degree for $\ell\le d \le k-1$ and $1\le \ell < k/2$.

Tight upper bounds on the hop domination number of triangle-free graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
For a graph $G$, a subset $S$ of $V(G)$ is a {\it hop dominating set} of $G$ if every vertex not in $S$ has a $2$-step neighbor in $S$. The {\it hop domination number}, $γ_h(G)$, of $G$ is the minimum cardinality of a hop dominating set of $G$. In this paper, we show that for a connected triangle-free graph $G$ with $n\ge 15$ vertices, if $δ(G)\ge 2$, then $γ_h(G)\le \frac{2n}{5}$, and the bound is tight. We also give some tight upper bounds on $γ_h(G)$ for {triangle-free} graphs $G$ that contain a Hamiltonian path or a Hamiltonian cycle.

Existence of Deadlock-Free Routing for Arbitrary Networks
Given a network of routing nodes, represented as a directed graph, we prove the following necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of deadlock-free message routing: The directed graph must contain two edge-disjoint directed trees rooted at the same node, one tree directed into the root node and the other directed away from the root node. While the sufficiency of this condition is known, its necessity, to the best of our knowledge, has not been previously recognized or proven. Although not directly applicable to the construction of deadlock-free routing schemes, this result provides a fundamental insight into the nature of deadlock-free networks and may lead to the development of improved tools for designing and verifying such schemes.
Saturation of 0-1 Matrices
A 0-1 matrix $M$ contains a 0-1 matrix $P$ if $M$ has a submatrix $P'$ which can be turned into $P$ by changing some of the ones to zeroes. Matrix $M$ is $P$-saturated if $M$ does not contain $P$, but any matrix $M'$ derived from $M$ by changing a zero to a one must contain $P$. The saturation function $sat(n,P)$ is defined as the minimum number of ones of an $n \times n$ $P$-saturated 0-1 matrix. Fulek and Keszegh showed that each pattern $P$ has $sat(n,P) = O(1)$ or $sat(n,P) = Θ(n)$. This leads to the natural problem of classifying forbidden 0-1 matrices according to whether they have linear or bounded saturation functions. Some progress has been made on this problem: multiple infinite families of matrices with bounded saturation function and other families with linear saturation function have been identified. We answer this question for all patterns with at most four ones, as well as several specific patterns with more ones, including multiple new infinite families. We also consider the effects of certain matrix operations, including the Kronecker product and insertion of empty rows and columns. Additionally, we consider the simpler case of fixing one dimension, extending results of (Fulek and Keszegh, 2021) and (Berendsohn, 2021). We also generalize some results to $d$-dimensional saturation.

On graphs without cycles of length 1 modulo 3
Burr and Erdős conjectured in 1976 that for every two integers $k>\ell\geqslant 0$ satisfying that $k\mathbb{Z}+\ell$ contains an even integer, an $n$-vertex graph containing no cycles of length $\ell$ modulo $k$ can contain at most a linear number of edges on $n$. Bollobás confirmed this conjecture in 1977 and then Erdős proposed the problem of determining the exact value of the maximum number of edges in such a graph. For the above $k$ and $\ell$, define $c_{\ell,k}$ to be the least constant such that every $n$-vertex graph with at least $c_{\ell,k}\cdot n$ edges contains a cycle of length $\ell$ modulo $k$. The precise (or asymptotic) values of $c_{\ell,k}$ are known for very few pairs $\ell$ and $k$. In this paper, we precisely determine the maximum number of edges in a graph containing no cycles of length 1 modulo 3. In particular, we show that every $n$-vertex graph with at least $\frac{5}{3}(n-1)$ edges contains a cycle of length 1 modulo 3, unless $9|(n-1)$ and each block of the graph is a Petersen graph. As a corollary, we obtain that $c_{1,3}=\frac{5}{3}$. This is the last remaining class modulo $k$ for $1\leqslant k\leqslant 4$.

Cyclic subsets in regular Dirac graphs
In 1996, in his last paper, Erdős asked the following question that he formulated together with Faudree: is there a positive $c$ such that any $(n+1)$-regular graph $G$ on $2n$ vertices contains at least $c 2^{2n}$ distinct vertex-subsets $S$ that are cyclic, meaning that there is a cycle in $G$ using precisely the vertices in $S$. We answer this question in the affirmative in a strong form by proving the following exact result: if $n$ is sufficiently large and $G$ minimises the number of cyclic subsets then $G$ is obtained from the complete bipartite graph $K_{n-1,n+1}$ by adding a $2$-factor (a spanning collection of vertex-disjoint cycles) within the part of size $n+1$. In particular, for $n$ large, this implies that the optimal $c$ in the problem is precisely $1/2$.

On the lattice formulation of the union-closed sets conjecture
The union-closed sets conjecture, also known as Frankl's conjecture, is a well-studied problem with various formulations. In terms of lattices, the conjecture states that every finite lattice $L$ with more than one element contains a join-irreducible element that is less than or equal to at most half of the elements in $L$. In this work, we obtain several necessary conditions for any counterexample $\tilde{L}$ of minimum size.

Planar lattices and equilateral odd-gons
Published in Yokohama Math. J. 70 (2024) 235-242 • View Publication • BIB
For a planar integral lattice $L$, let $ν(L)$ denote the square-free part of the integer $D(L)^2$, where $D(L)$ stands for the area of a fundamental parallelogram of $L$. For each odd integer $n$ with $3 \leq n<29$, a planar lattice $L$ contains an equilateral $n$-gon if and only if $L$ is similar to an integral lattice $L'$ such that $ν(L')\equiv 3 \pmod 4$ and the largest prime factor $p$ of $ν(L')$ satisfies $p \leq n$. Moreover, such $L$ contains a convex equilateral $n$-gon, which answers a problem posed by Maehara.

Orientations of graphs omitting non-edge-critical directed graphs
In 1974, Erdős asked the following question: given a graph $G$ and a directed graph $\vec{H}$, how many ways are there to orient the edges of $G$ such that it does not contain $\vec{H}$ as a subgraph? We denote this value by $D(G, \vec{H})$. Further, we let $D(n, \vec{H})$ denote the maximum of $D(G, \vec{H})$ over all graphs $G$ on $n$ vertices. In 2006, Alon and Yuster gave an exact answer when $\vec{H}$ is a tournament. In 2023, Bucić, Janzer, and Sudakov gave asymptotic answers for all directed graphs $\vec{H}$, and in the same paper, they gave an exact answer when $\vec{H}$ is a directed cycle. In this paper, we give a better bound for some specific non-bipartite directed graphs. Further, we obtain exact values of $D(G, \vec{H})$ for some small non-edge-critical directed graphs $\vec{H}$. Finally, for these graphs, we classify all graphs $G$ that attain the bound $D(G, \vec{H}) = D(n, \vec{H})$.

Independent transversal blow-up of graphs
In an $r$-partite graph, an independent transversal of size $s$ (ITS) consists of $s$ vertices from each part forming an independent set. Motivated by a question from Bollobás, Erdős, and Szemerédi (1975), Di Braccio and Illingworth (2024) inquired about the minimum degree needed to ensure an $n \times \cdots \times n$ $r$-partite graph contains $K_r(s)$, a complete $r$-partite graph with $s$ vertices in each part. We reformulate this as finding the smallest $n$ such that any $n \times \cdots \times n$ $r$-partite graph with maximum degree $Δ$ has an ITS. For any $\varepsilon>0$, we prove the existence of a $γ>0$ ensuring that if $G$ is a multipartite graph partitioned as $(V_1, V_2, \ldots, V_r)$, where the average degree of each part $V_i$ is at most $D$, the maximum degree of any vertex to any part $V_i$ is at most $γD$, and the size of each part $V_i$ is at least $(s + \varepsilon)D$, then $G$ possesses an ITS. The constraint $(s + \varepsilon)D$ on the part size is tight. This extends results of Loh and Sudakov (2007), Glock and Sudakov (2022), and Kang and Kelly (2022). We also show that any $n \times \cdots \times n$ $r$-partite graph with minimum degree at least $\left(r-1-\frac{1}{2s^2}\right)n$ contains $K_r(s)$ and provide a relative Turán-type result. Additionally, this paper explores counting ITSs in multipartite graphs.

A Polynomial Ramsey Statement for Bounded VC-dimension
Published • View Publication • BIB
A theorem by Ding, Oporowski, Oxley, and Vertigan states that every sufficiently large bipartite graph without twins contains a matching, co-matching, or half-graph of any given size as an induced subgraph. We prove that this Ramsey statement has polynomial dependency assuming bounded VC-dimension of the initial graph, using the recent verification of the Erdős-Hajnal property for graphs of bounded VC-dimension. Since the theorem of Ding et al. plays a role in (finite) model theory, which studies even more restricted structures, we also comment on further refinements of the theorem within this context.

Planar graphs without 4-, 7-, 9-cycles and 5-cycles normally adjacent to 3-cycles
Published in Discrete Applied Mathematics, 358 (2024) 158--166 • View Publication • BIB
A graph is \emph{$(\mathcal{I}, \mathcal{F})$-partitionable} if its vertex set can be partitioned into two parts such that one part $\mathcal{I}$ is an independent set, and the other $\mathcal{F}$ induces a forest. A graph is \emph{$k$-degenerate} if every subgraph $H$ contains a vertex of degree at most $k$ in $H$. Bernshteyn and Lee defined a generalization of $k$-degenerate graphs, which is called \emph{weakly $k$-degenerate}. In this paper, we show that planar graphs without $4$-, $7$-, $9$-cycles, and $5$-cycles normally adjacent to $3$-cycles are both $(\mathcal{I}, \mathcal{F})$-partitionable and weakly $2$-degenerate.

Decomposition of toroidal graphs without some subgraphs
Published in Bulletin of the Malaysian Mathematical Sciences Society, 47 (2024) article number 39 • View Publication • BIB
We consider a family of toroidal graphs, denoted by $\mathcal{T}_{i, j}$, which contain neither $i$-cycles nor $j$-cycles. A graph $G$ is $(d, h)$-decomposable if it contains a subgraph $H$ with $Δ(H) \leq h$ such that $G - E(H)$ is a $d$-degenerate graph. For each pair $(i, j) \in \{(3, 4), (3, 6), (4, 6), (4, 7)\}$, Lu and Li proved that every graph in $\mathcal{T}_{i, j}$ is $(2, 1)$-decomposable. In this short note, we present a unified approach to prove that a common superclass of $\mathcal{T}_{i, j}$ is also $(2, 1)$-decomposable.

Eigenvalue conditions implying edge-disjoint spanning trees and a forest with constraints
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $G$ be a nontrivial graph with minimum degree $δ$ and $k$ an integer with $k\ge 2$. In the literature, there are eigenvalue conditions that imply $G$ contains $k$ edge-disjoint spanning trees. We give eigenvalue conditions that imply $G$ contains $k$ edge-disjoint spanning trees and another forest $F$ with $|E(F)|>\frac{δ-1}δ(|V(G)|-1)$, and if $F$ is not a spanning tree, then $F$ has a component with at least $δ$ edges.
